O que inspirou o nosso debate foi o filme finlandês Folhas de Outono, do diretor e roteirista Aki Kaurismaki. O longa foi vencedor do Prêmio do Juri no Festival de Cannes e é um nome forte para concorrer ao Oscar de Melhor Filme Internacional. E não é para menos, afinal estamos diante de uma comédia romântica singela, inusitada e bastante carismática. O filme conta sobre o encontro de duas almas solitárias, que tentam se aproximar apesar das dificuldades. O roteiro pode soar simples, mas rendeu uma bela castionada. Vem com a gente!

After the mine he works at shuts down for good, he ventures to Helsinki to find work. Once there he meets a girl and some bad luck. Told with dark humor and irony, Ariel is a great movie from an original voice of cinema.

Anoche el jurado que entregará la Palma de Oro examinó dos cintas: la comedia finlandesa “Las Hojas Muertas” y “Club Cero”, un drama sobre el radicalismo dietético. El finlandés Aki Kaurismaki es candidato por quinta vez a la Palma de Oro, con Las hojas muertas, la historia de dos solitarios, en busca del amor en Helsinki. Como la mayoría de los personajes de Kaurismaki, los protagonistas de esta cinta pertenecen a la clase obrera. Están inmersos en una vida rutinaria y sosa; un día se encuentran por casualidad en un bar de karaoke de la capital, e intentan convencerse de que podrían haber encontrado, al fin, el amor. Esta semana hemos decidido que queríamos hablar de buen cine, y por eso aprovechando que tenemos anunciados los directores que competirán en la próxima edición del festival de Cannes hemos decidido escoger a 3 de ellos para acercarnos más a sus filmografías Vamos a arrancar en con la figura de un director inglés: Ken LOACH y su visión de la guerra civil española en “Tierra y Libertad” de 1995, en nuestro repaso nos acercamos a la figura de Hirozaku Koreeda con su obra de 1998 titulada Wandafuru raifu, o en su versión internacional “After Life” y terminamos el repaso de vuelta en Estados Unidos con la película ya considerada de culto de Todd Haynes titulada “Velvet Goldmine” Todo ello, como siempre, sin spoilers. La septuagésimo sexta edición del festival internacional de Cannes se celebrará del 16 al 27 de Mayo en la ciudad francesa. Pero ya se han dado a conocer los nombres que conformarán las distintas secciones. Centrándonos en la sección oficial, que abrirá “Jeanne Du Barry” de la directora y actriz francesa Maiwenn, para el que no la ubique, es la directora de Polisse, ADN y Mi amor. Con Polisse y Mi amor ya estuvo en Cannes, la primera ganó el premio del jurado en 2011 y la segunda el premio a la mejor actriz para Emmanuelle Bercot. Vamos con las mujeres que competirán por la palma de Oro: Jessica HAUSNER, una larga conocida del festival presenta Club Hero tras haber competido tres veces en la sección paralela “Un Certain Regard” y otra en la oficial, en 2019 con Little Joe. Su obra más famosa quizás, Lourdes, compitió en Venecia. AFTER LIFE En After Life el purgatorio es un lugar extraño, la gente al morir debe habitar un lugar abandonado y con la ayuda de unos guías examinar sus recuerdos con el propósito de buscar el momento más feliz de su existencia. Ese recuerdo será recreado en una película y será el único que se lleven con ellos al resto de la eternidad olvidando todo lo demás. El japonés Hirozaku Koreeda escribe y dirige esta cinta que ganó el premio Fipresci en San Sebastian antes de competir en 6 ocasiones, este año será la séptima, por la palma de Oro que consiguió en 2018 con Shoplifters. Rocío te llevarás tú esta película contigo a la eternidad. VELVET GOLDMINE Nos situamos en Londres durante los años 70. Brian Slade decide romper con todo lo anterior y el movimiento hippie para crear todo un concepto: El Glam Rock. Años después el periodista británico Arthur Stuart investiga la carrera de la superestrella, entrevistando a los principales agentes en su historia para averiguar dónde se encuentra ahora y la influencia que cada uno tuvieron en ella. Todd HAynes compitió en Cannes en 1998 con esta cinta, que ganó un reconocimiento por su contribución artística aunque cedió la palma de oro al griego Theodorus Angelopoulous con “La Eternidad y un día” en una edición en la que curiosamente Ken Loach competía con “Mi nombre es Joe”, Roberto Benigni con “La vida es bella” y Terry Gillian con “Miedo y asco en Las Vegas”.

Does Kris and Anton dive deep into Aki Kaurismaki's film Ariel, and look at the society impacts of people in desperate situations

Welcome back to Intermission, a spin-off podcast from The Film Stage Show. Led by yours truly, Michael Snydel, I invite a guest to discuss an arthouse, foreign, or experimental film of their choice. For the twelfth episode, I talked to prolific Chicago critic Ben Sachs, an associate editor at Cine-File, about Martín Rejtman's 2014 Argentine comedy Two Shots Fired (available along with the rest of Rejman's fiction work on MUBI). A wryly absurd, deceptively simple portrait of weathering middle class discontentment, Rejtman's film traces the undulations of a family and their friends/acquaintances after a 16-year-old boy attempts suicide. He presents that event as little more than a darkly comedic non-sequitur (When asked why he did it, the boy says: “It was an impulse; it was very hot.”), a corollary into a series of vignettes about disconnection and spiritual fatigue. His sparely evocative sensibility can occasionally recall filmmakers like Jim Jarmusch and Aki Kaurismaki, but it's more productive to contextualize him with his regional contemporaries and descendants. Releasing his first feature in 1992, Rejtman is viewed as one of the key figures of the New Argentine Cinema with filmmakers like Lucrecia Martel, Lisandro Alonso, and Pablo Trapero. Those filmmakers aren't necessarily united by approach––a portion of this episode specifically compares Martel and Rejtman's disparate approaches to class in The Headless Woman and Two Shots Fired––but Rejtman's digressive narrative style and lightly ironic touch feels distinctly Argentine. Our conversation begins with a discussion about the film's beguiling tone before segueing into theories about the film as a metaphor for the internet, Rejtman's precision in portraying an almost nostalgic middle class, and Sachs' own nearly life-long admiration for Southern Cone comedy, and especially Argentine humor. With Francine Stock Francine talks to director David Michod about War Machine, his big budget satire on the U.S. military starring Brad Pitt, which is having its premiere on-line. He tells Francine why he really doesn't mind that it's only playing in a handful of cinemas. The debate about big screen versus small screen raged this year at the Cannes film festival when the logo of an on-line film and TV company was booed at a premiere. Film buyer Clare Binns and critic Tim Robey tell Francine if they joined in the booing. Rungano Nyoni was born in Zambia and raised in Wales. Her debut feature, I Am Not A Witch, premiered at Cannes, and she reveals what it was like to get the red carpet treatment. Heavy drinking, existential malaise and deadpan humour characterise the films of director Aki Kaurismaki. Critic Larushka Ivan-Zadeh tells us five things we should know about the Finnish auteur.

"What shall we do now?"  "Let's get married and have a child."  "I already have a child."  "That's good.  We'll spare some time."  ""Are you always so self-confident?"  "This is the first time." You've probably never heard of Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismaki, but if you enjoy the dry, black humor of directors like David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino, you're in for a treat. Kaurismaki made films about the struggle of blue collar workers, usually in industrial cities like Helsinki and La Havre.  Ariel is his second in his "proletariat trilogy", preceded by Shadows in Paradise (1986) and followed by The Match Factory Girl (1990).  All three films are available in a set on DVD from the Criterion Collection.
