Minister Kieran McAnulty has sparked concerns following his recent comments about Affordable Water Reforms. The Local Government Minister said on TVNZ's Q&A that the local representative groups comprised of council representatives and mana whenua didn't reflect a "one-person, one vote" model. He says that because the proportion of mana whenua in the groups is higher than the proportion in New Zealand's population. Auckland University Education Professor Elizabeth Rata says democracy rests on the idea that rights belong to the individual as a citizen because representatives in Parliament are accountable to citizens. "It's not just simply the idea of a model of democracy, one person, one vote. No, it goes really deep into the very heart of accountability of politicians to us, the people." Episode 1609: The Coffee Machine That Can Pay for a University Education by Mr. Money Mustache Mr. Money Mustache is a thirty-something retiree who now writes about how we can all live a frugal, yet awesome, life of leisure. He and his wife studied engineering and computer science in Canada, then worked in standard tech-industry cubicle jobs in various locations throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. Then they retired from real work way back in 2005 in order to start a family. This was achieved not through luck or amazing skill, but simply by living a lifestyle about 50% less expensive than most of their peers and investing the surplus in very boring conservative Vanguard index funds and a rental house or two. Afghanistan's Taliban rulers banned university education for females nationwide, as the hard-line Islamists continue to crush women's right to education and freedom. The Taliban have ratcheted up restrictions on all aspects of women's lives, ignoring international outrage. The spokesman for the ministry, Ziaullah Hashimi, who tweeted the letter, confirmed the order. State Department spokesman Ned Price in Washington says the Taliban should expect that this decision, which is in contravention to the commitments they have made repeatedly and publicly to their own people, will carry concrete costs for them. The ban on higher education comes less than three months after thousands of girls and women sat university entrance exams across the country, with many aspiring to choose teaching and medicine as future careers.

Growing up during turbulent times in South Korea, Dr. Paul Kim learned early on that you can't fight violence with another violence. Instead, he believed in the importance of education. That way, we can promote peace, harmony, and true democracy. In this episode, Dr. Kim joins Anne Pratt to share with us the importance of education for every child. He tells us about his journey of moving to the United States, overcoming language barriers, discovering the true meaning of education, and understanding the value of inquiry-based learning. He also dives deep into the challenges leaders in the U.S. and the world face today, highlighting issues on education and the Four C's Plus Two pillars of competence-building in education and training. Dr. Kim then shares his insights on what the educational sector needs to do to help shape, mold, and develop the leaders of the future. Education is a human right. Jenny identifies as Gender Fluid & Gynesexual, this is the main topic in the curious world of gender identity spectrums with Tiffany! Tiffany and Jenny met through Pride house in Shinjuku, which is a LGBTQ+ community that provides both physical and mental relaxation to be able to express one's Gender & Sexual identity without judgement. We learn from Jenny's introduction that her gender identity depends on the situation and day. The conversation dives into Jennys experience in Japan, what she loves about the country, the cultural differences, dating experiences and the challenges they face as a foreigner and with their Gender identity. Jenny expresses how they are not ashamed of how they represent themselves in the world. Jenny mentions that being LGBTQ+ isn't defined by a person's fashion, and want to be treated like everyone else without the extra steps. Jenny was born in the City of Indianapolis in 1989, and lived in the small city of Muncie. Jenny double majored in Environmental Science and Japanese, and minored in Astronomy. They undertook a one-year study abroad program at Tokyo Gakugei University. Jenny has a Master's degree in geology (specifically planetary science) and a graduate certification in University Education and Teaching. "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change your country, to change the world.” Nelson Mandela Are we preparing our children for the future of work, where they compete for jobs in the clouds and must march in step with rapidly changing technology?  Does school inspire and motivate them, and create a lifetime appetite for learning and improving. Who is the main beneficiary of our educational dollars?  Are we pouring too much money into the bureaucracy, and not enough into the classrooms?  Do the taxpayers and parents hold the keys to change or the unions? Does the role of the teacher, and how we teach have to change? I don't have the answers, but my guest does. Dwayne Matthews is a renaissance thinker, innovation evangelist, and bold education strategist. Dwayne has addressed the United Nations, Conference Board, the Prime Minister of Canada, School Boards, and Parents with his brilliant ideas and powerful plans for revamping education. He shares them here alongside a life story that gave him his insights and his passion. You will learn why Dwayne believes in asynchronous learning and more personalized education. The need to rapidly adopt new technologies, to transform the role of the teacher from educator to facilitator. Dwayne asks important questions. Will someone be better served with a Google Certificate or a University Education? Is Micro-Learning better than a master' Degree? Dwayne Matthews even has an idea on how to win over bureaucrats' and unions' resistance to change by rapid testing new models and winning over parents. As Dwayne explains: "When four-year-olds can navigate a technology device faster than adults, the role of the educator has to change."  As a bonus, Christina Cleveland, Senior Director, Learning & Performance, Strategy, and Innovation at RBC, joins CTM to talk about how progressive organizations are revamping how they engage and train, based on new technologies, microlearning, work-life balance and the future of work. If you are an average student... average... say with what would be a C or C- in GCSE subjects like maths and English - should you be denied a university education? I would say hellllll no... of course not - but it seems the UK Government has other ideas on this. I am coming in hot, frustrated and soooo exhausted with Government initiatives which feel like they limit the potential of our young people. This episode is based on leaked and early reports in relation to the Augar Review of Post-18 Education and Funding. When tuning into this episode it is important to know that:1. I have not read the whole report or all of the recommendations forthcoming from the Government (they had not yet been released at the time of recording) 2. I am basing the information I have shared on a variety of normally dependable sources - including The Guardian and The BBC3. I am open to having my opinion swayed and changed if the wider reading helps me understand the perspective being presented 4. After more than a decade of working in education (in the state, university and independent sector) and even prior to that with educational charities - I feel sufficiently informed to share this reaction to what has been reported on these topics so far. I don't believe it should be down to governments to decide who is worthy to attend university and to decide what subjects lead to employability as the UK is a country in which all talents are needed from our STEM minds to our creative ones and everything in between. So... listen along. Share in the rage presented... or disagree entirely. I am so ready and open to hear what you think. In this episode of the podcast, we are joined by three doctoral candidates from Yale University: Alexander Batson, Matthew Denney, and (returning guest) Justin R. Hawkins. Together, we discuss a variety of things related to university education, such as how (Christian) students today may go about discerning their college futures both practically and spiritually; the distinction between secular and Christian universities (please see note below); the importance of community/accountability throughout; education not merely for economic ends but also for the end of growing in one's own humanity; the significance of the liberal arts; and the theological significance of grace within a meritocratic context. Note: Nearly halfway through, Justin introduces into the conversation Bible colleges, which needs to be distinguished from Christian colleges. Christian colleges are liberal arts schools that typically provide a wide variety of learning (i.e. STEM and the humanities) through a Christian framework, whereas Bible colleges are specifically geared towards theological and ministerial training.
