I don't mind losing. In fact, when I play with my weekly game group, I usually lose. There are very few board games that I am confident that I will win or at least have a good chance of winning. However, there is something interesting I noticed recently. Irrespective of whether you're a sore loser or gracious winner, I think it is true that gameplay experience changes depending on the skill level of the other players. Playing the same game with people who are as good at a game as you just feels different to playing it with people who are better than you or worse than you. In this article, I want to investigate this a bit further. Our favourite Serge Laget game is Senji. "Senji" is a contraction of "Sengoku Jidai," or Warring States Period, which refers to over a century of near total civil war in Japan that started in 1467. Scholars differ as to when it ended, but mostly we can agree that it started when I traded Huey my grandpa in exchange for boats and then he shipped ol' gramps to Louis' estate. I found this out the hard way when my armies marched on Château Louis to be met with my ex-grandpa. I was a bit miffed, but I was able to use Huey's boat to steal his best stuff, so I guess I got over it. Besides, Dewey gave me Huey's son in exchange for some weapons.01:19 AYURIS: The Red Cathedral (Israel Cendrero & Sheila Santos, Devir Games, 2020)Games Played Last Week:02:35 -Autobahn (Fabio Lopiano and Nestore Mangone, Alley Cat Games, 2022)08:57 -Soda Smugglers (Reiner Knizia, Bitewing Games, 2022)11:11 -Woodcraft (Ross Arnold and Vladimír Suchý, Delicious Games, 2022)12:37 -Chinatown (Karsten Hartwig, Z-Man, 1999)15:21 -Atiwa (Uwe Rosenberg, Lookout Games, 2022)20:39 -Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy (Touko Tahkokallio, Lautapelit.fl, 2020)23:15 -Karate Tomate (Reiner Knizia, AMIGO, 2018)23:31 -Monikers (Alex Hague and Justin Vickers, CMYK, 2015)25:45 -Herd Mentality (Rich Coombs and Dan Penn, Big Potato, 2020)26:50 -Senji (Bruno Cathala & Serge Laget, Asmodee, 2008)News (and why it doesn't matter):27:00 Pearl Games closed by Asmodee, but Sébastien Dujardin might resurrect it28:37 SVWAG Videos! Continuing my series of articles about teaching games, in this article I want to talk about what responsibilities the teacher has. It's not always obvious, but when you teach a game, you're not done after explaining the rules to the group. You have to continue to keep an eye on things, to make sure everyone plays correctly. You also have to be ready to answer questions during the game. That's a lot of responsibility to shoulder. Melanie Tait joins host Savva Savas as they discuss life, creativity, and her complicated relationship with food. A feast of talent, Melanie is an award-winning journalist, author, radio broadcaster and playwright, and “one rip-snorter of a story teller”. She shares her journey from growing up in rural NSW in the shadow of “The Big Potato”, her life in London, travels in Portugal and her love of nostalgia. Through her poignant reflections, Melanie lends empowerment to those who may feel “different” and she does so with an abundance of wit and wisdom. As a playwright and broadcaster, Melanie knows the ups and downs of the entertainment industry. This is why she is a keen supporter of Actors Benevolent Fund which lends much-needed support to all those employed in the arts who have fallen on hard times through career lows.

I think a lot of people in the board game hobby play together for fun and for the social aspect. Sure, many of us want to win the game. We don't play to lose. However, I think only very few people are hugely competitive. Playing board games is more of a hobby. In this article, I look at different ways of improving your game and what it might take to become better at winning. Hey Partysans! In this episode Bruce is joined by Rocki, Mike, Bryan and Marty to talk about the new hot beverage the kids are all talking about....Flamin Hot Dew. A brand crossover that exists within the same wing of PepsiCo and could only have been made to make a quick buck, and not as a long term beverage. Get yours while supplies last. We also talk about the Big Potato party game Color Brain. WE talk about it as both a zoom game, and our opinion of what we think it might play like in more normal circumstances. Thanks for listening!
I love playing board or card games with my wife. Spending a little, or a lot of time together focused on the same activity is a wonderful way to connect. It started as a date night, but now we might play a quick 5-10 minute game or two over lunch or we play a longer game. Co-operative games tend to be our favourite. Working together to solve the puzzle that the game presents is a lot of fun. That's why we also love solving the Sunday crossword puzzle together. There are very few two-player competitive games that we enjoy and in this article, I want to explain why. Mickey returns with the hot takes you know and love. He joins Yoel and Alexa to discuss Jonathan Haidt's recent Atlantic article, "Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid." Haidt claims the answer is social media, but the cohosts aren't fully convinced. To shed a bit more light on the matter, they turn to an article by Amy Orben and Andrew Przybylski which provides a rigorous analysis of the relationship between social media use and well-being. In the end, Mickey admits to being a hypocrite, and Alexa makes a plug for Big Potato.
The dam has burst, and the flow of large player-count games rushes without signs of abating. We are willing to be sufficiently foolhardy to gather in larger groups, so the demand for 6+ player games has skyrocketed; and with it, the chance to return to old favourites. The following article was written by Laurie Trueblood of Adventures of Authenticity. As a kid, family game night was a staple and we had that one closet that always seemed to overflow with board games. As I got older, I added tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and video games. And while gaming has always been a part of my lifestyle, I never really saw it as beneficial beyond just something to do for fun. But according to scientific research, tabletop gaming is actually quite good for you. Allen, Ski, and Brent recap and review Season 5, Episode 1, “Sick and Tired, Part 1." What is wrong with Dorothy? Can a specialist from The Big Potato figure it out or will he just make matters worse? Can Blanche's novel make her the next great Southern author? How many days can Sophia go without a successful bathroom visit?!? Listen now to find out!
00:00 - Nap strats and sleep hacks. 06:48 - With Unpacking from Witch Beam Games there's, well, a lot to unpack. What's truly brilliant here is the way the storytelling fully integrates with the gameplay, without feeling clunky, and explores a life experience in a delicate way, without being cloying. 21:06 - Above? Below? Why not have both? Ryan Laukat and Red Raven Games have made a truly lovely and pleasantly light Euro game with Above and Below, merging worker placement with a choose-your-own-adventure-like narrative element. 34:28 - We're big fans of the work of Big Potato Games and Snakesss is no exception. Phil Walker-Harding's latest is a blend of social deduction and trivia and it works brilliantly - just ask the Mongoose of Truth. 43:54 - We also got a chance to play Big Potato TV, which is currently in beta. It's great value, even in its work-in-progress state, and an easy way to get more games on the go during family gatherings, even for those people that might typically shy away from them. 46:38 - We've been exploring classic movies and rediscovering the joy of just browsing through the Radio Times for cool stuff to watch that you might not normally think of. Plus a chat about how one director aims to help save the cinema experience. All that, and the number one rule, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). A cheeky l'il Spotify Playlist is over on Spotify (obviously), which gathers together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about. Links to where you can find us - StayingInPodcast.com Note: sometimes we'll have been sent a review copy of the thing we're talking about on the podcast. It doesn't skew how we think about that thing, and we don't receive compensation for anything we discuss, but we thought you might like to know this is the case.
Ryan got the Rona. Ryan and myself share our experiences of catching the virus and the perspective it's given them. Chris Gilbert is live in Tokyo to talk about a massive shortage of potatoes in Japan! We look at other weird shortages in Japan, a drunk Irishman breaking into Romania's parliament building, Hypnosis on the big screen, and more! Greg fish is back with a topic that nearly breaks our brains! He dives into how researchers tried to make the world's most resilient creatures a part of a computer. Greg shows flaws in the research and the manipulations to make the story blow up online. HEY, DO YOU LIKE PODCASTS? In today's episode, within the next few days 100 per cent of Covid-19 cases on the island are expected to be due to the Omicron variant, health minister Michalis Hadjipantelas said on Sunday. Elsewhere, a total of 640 children received the vaccine as one centre at the State Fair in Nicosia was open only to them in the weekend. Finally, investigations are ongoing after the Big Potato erected at the entrance to the village of Xylophagou was chopped down at the start of the new year. All this and more in the Cyprus Beat briefing brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.
