Episode 046: March 29, 2025 Rob Carlos is a self-taught fantasy artist who has made a name for himself with murals, video games, celebrity portraits, custom dragon paintings, and general hustling and passion following. He is also a great friend to many artists in the Pacific Northwest, including me. Together we will discuss his unusual career path and what qualifies as “making it” in the art world. About Rob: In 2007, Rob started showing his work at Norwescon, and other conventions across the country, and Helsinki and Dublin Worldcons. For years, Rob primarily illustrated for independent creators, like SJ Tucker and Alexander James Adams. He has been invited to be the AGOH at Radcon, Dragonflight, Miscon, GFGR, Orycon, Norwescon, and Philcon. Rob stays busy doing both self-directed and commercial projects and murals. He is currently the artist for the Twitch stream “Legacy of Fools”, a live actual-play D&D game, and the Art Director and primary illustrator for Beach House RPGs, which released “Start Here: The Introductory RPG” in 2024. About Brittany: Brittany Torres is an award winning fantasy artist with a unique style of digital painting that focuses on luminous, fantastical female portraits. She braved the college towns of MA to emerge armed with a Bachelor's of Liberal Arts from Mount Holyoke College and a deeper appreciation for female representation. With a background in publishing, graphic design, along with website and social media marketing business, Brittany has always found ways to stay creative. She currently shows her artwork at fantasy and sci-fi conventions, both internationally (Glasgow Worldcon 2024) and locally, such as her home show Norwescon in Seattle where, among others, has been awarded the People's Choice Best in Show Award in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Dr. Harrison is known widely in the planetary science and research industry as Tanya of Mars. Why?  Tanya is the founder of Professional Martian LLC, a company focused on science and sci-fi consulting, communications, and outreach in ways to break space out of the echo chamber to reach broader audiences. Currently, she is the Manager of Science Programs at Planet Federal in Washington DC, the government-focused arm of Planet Labs. In this role, she helps scientists understand the utility of—and how to access, process, and use—Planet's incredible daily imaging of the entire landmass of the Earth and its coral reefs. Tanya was the Director of Research for Arizona State University's Space Technology and Science ("NewSpace") Initiative where she worked on commercial-academic space partnerships and martian geomorphology research. She was the Science Team Collaborator on the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity and the upcoming Mars 2020 sample caching rover. Tanya received her Ph.D. in Geology with a specialization in Planetary Science and Exploration from the University of Western Ontario's Centre for Planetary Science and Space Exploration (CPSX). From 2008 until 2012, was on the science operations team for NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) Context Camera (CTX) and Mars Color Imager (MARCI) at Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS). In Tanya’s own words: For CTX, I chose what the camera takes pictures of in a given week and then analyze those images from a geologist’s standpoint. For MARCI, I wrote weather reports for the general public, as well as a few times for the Spirit and Opportunity rover teams to alert them of any impending storms that could threaten the rovers. I was also a science team collaborator for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover Mast Cameras (Mastcam), Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI), and Mars Descent Imager (MARDI). While this work was exciting, I made the decision after 4 years to return to graduate school and get my Ph.D. My undergraduate degree is in astronomy and physics from the University of Washington, and I did my graduate work in geology (well, “Earth and Environmental Sciences”) at Wesleyan University. Areas of interest include martian geomorphology and terrestrial analogues, spectroscopy, and glaciology. My work in astronomy has involved cooling mechanisms of interstellar dust clouds, diffuse interstellar bands, the metallicity of the old, metal-rich cluster NGC 6791, and the metallicity and lithium abundances of the recurrent novae T Coronae Borealis and RS Ophiuchi. I have also been active in education and public outreach, getting involved with organizations such as The Planetary Society, Expanding Your Horizons, Girl Scouts, Norwescon, The Mars Society, and The National Space Society. In my spare time, I am a professional photographer and the owner/photographer behind Station Toronto. Where to find Tanya: http://tanyaofmars.com/ and tanya@tanyaofmars.com

At the halfway mark, discussion goes to suspended reality and the appreciation of production value of videos online. They talk about childhood scavenging for adult magazines and after a quick drink break, Rusty dives into his 17 year comedy career and his last show at The Airport Lounge in Tacoma. He then discusses how he got into comedy. 47:24 – Rusty talks about the ups and downs of performing then they discuss comedy in Tacoma and how it's changed over the years from a violent place to live to a place with good food and entertainment. There is also a small debate over whether the Tacoma park is known as ‘Wright' or ‘Wrights' Park, which a Google search sided with those that pronounced it as ‘Wright' Park. The show comes to an end with chat about ‘Gorilla' Comedy where comedians hijack karaoke by paying the karaoke DJ $5 for a song and then try see how long they can drag out the performance before the DJ shuts them down. Rusty tells the team where they can find him online and the guys give a shout out to Wizards Keep Games (https://www.wizardskeepgames.com/) in Renton. Thanks Rusty for joining the guys on their returning show!!! Special Guest: Rusty.

Marguerite Reed‘s Archangel (Arche Press, 2015) introduces a hero not often found at the center of science fiction: a mother, who takes cuddling responsibilities as seriously as she does the fate of her planet. Of course, Vashti Loren plays many roles besides Mom. She’s also a hunter, a scientist, a tour guide and the widow of a revered early settler. But Reed spotlights her relationship with her toddler, offering a protagonist who’s not only good with a gun but manages to get her kid to daycare on time. “So many protagonists, whether in science fiction or fantasy or adventure fiction or film are disconnected or separate or isolated from family ties, and I wanted to see if I could write something where people did have family ties, where they were connected, as we so often are in the real world,” Reed says. When Loren discovers that a genetically-enhanced and potentially dangerous human soldier has been illegally smuggled onto the planet, she must decide whether he is friend or foe. The former means she can enlist his aid to protect her world, a lush colony faced with the threat of massive – and potentially destructive – immigration; the latter means she must kill him. Ultimately, like a number of books nominated for this year’s Philip K. Dick Award, Reed takes readers on an adventure that explores what it means to be human. Archangel was one of six books nominated for this year’s Philip K. Dick Award. It received a special citation on March 25 at Norwescon. The winner of this year’s award is Apex by Ramez Nam; I hope to have Nam as a guest on the podcast in the coming weeks. Rob Wolf is the author of The Alternate Universe and The Escape. He worked for many years as a journalist, writing on a wide range of topics from science to justice reform, and now serves as director of communications for a think tank in New York City. Keffy Kehrli joins me to talk about his new LGBTQ SF/F fiction podcast, GlitterShip, which is Kickstarting now! After you've finished backing the GlitterShip Kickstarter, you can find Keffy online at his website and on Twitter as @keffy. He's also going to be at Norwescon from the 2nd-5th of April, and he has a story forthcoming in Uncanny. Yay!I also wanted to congratulate all the Lambda Literary Award finalists. Great list, this year, and you can find all the details on the Lambda site. And finally, there are still a few days left to back Brimstone Rhine, the music project C.S.E. Cooney is doing. That campaign is just a few hundred dollars shy of having a music video to go along with the two EPs.
