There was one common thread among the hundreds of tributes paid to Ross Stitt after his recent retirement. Unequivocally, friends and fellow horsemen agreed that the 83 year old had been an ornament to his profession as a man and a professional horse trainer. I'd like to add my sentiments by plucking from the archives an interview we recorded with Ross almost six years ago. He was in reminiscent mood on the day, and took us on a nostalgic journey through his life with horses. Ross began by reflecting on childhood days on the family dairy farm in the Manning Valley. He was milking the cows from age 9 before going to school. He says showjumping was his first equine passion, and it appears he was pretty adept at the sport. Ross recalls that his first thoroughbred idol was the legendary broodmare Dark Jewel. He formed the attachment simply because he had a show jumper called “Jewel” at the time. It's not widely known that Ross Stitt could easily have pursued a career in harness racing. His earliest tutor was trots trainer Ned Coleman. He says he was very close to acquiring his licence to drive in races. Ross says he was 24 years old when he bought his first galloper Bold Pirate from an Inglis Mixed Sale. He initially gave the maiden performer to a local trainer, but later took over the training himself. He remembers ex Sydney gallopers Gold Optic and Royal Kirk as the horses to get him up and running on north coast tracks. The retired trainer rates Critic's Pride as his first headline horse. That's no surprise when you consider Critic's Pride won a whopping 29 races for his up and coming trainer. Ross Stitt had the amazing ability to keep horses up for lengthy periods and to keep them winning. Half brothers Our Ambition and Gilded Blue are two prime examples. They won 48 races between them. He acknowledges the support of owner Ron Shaw, a former accountant who settled in nearby Old Bar following his retirement. He and Ross enjoyed a great association. Ross talks about his infatuation with Sir Dapper, a brilliant racehorse who later became a successful sire. The trainer won multiple races in the late 90's and early 2000's with Dapper Spirit, Just Dapper and Chilli Dapper. He pays a heartfelt tribute to former record breaking jockey Robert Thompson who retired just under three years after our podcast was recorded. Thompson rode more winners for the Stitt stable than any other rider. Ross looks back on his pleasing record in NSW Country Cups. Surprisingly it took him 35 years to win a Kempsey Cup. The veteran trainer was fairly emphatic in declaring Precise Timing to be the best horse he ever trained. An inveterate trier, Precise Timing won a total of 18 races including the 2006 Launceston Cup. Ross explains what prompted him to venture all the way to Tasmania. He delights in telling the story of Heavenly Glow, the $10,000 Gold Coast purchase destined to win two Gr 1 races. When he realised the filly was good enough to run at the elite level, Ross had no hesitation in sending her to a Sydney trainer. Ross tells the story of Youthful Jack, the unfashionably bred gelding who would win 18 races and $1.15 million in prize money. He placed him with other trainers at varying stages with great results- Rex Lipp at Toowoomba, Allan Denham in Sydney and Adam Trinder in Tasmania. Ross himself won 7 races with Youthful Jack including the Grafton Ramornie Hcp. The recently retired trainer pays tribute to some of the talented riders with whom he was associated over the years. This podcast has been in the archives for quite some time but remains relevant by way of our tribute to a country training marvel.

In a recent episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," guest Bob Motta, a defense attorney and host of the podcast "Defense Diaries," discussed the ongoing legal proceedings involving Sergeant Lank and his relationship with Chris Albert. The defense aimed to portray this relationship as giving Albert preferential treatment during an incident unrelated to the case in question. Motta analyzed the cross-examination where Sergeant Lank recounted a 2002 altercation involving Albert. Despite attempts to illustrate a close and potentially compromising friendship between Lank and Albert, Motta expressed skepticism about the defense's effectiveness, noting the age of the incident and questioning its relevance to the case. Key Points of the Conversation 1. **Sergeant Lank's Testimony:** Lank described a past incident where he helped Chris Albert during an altercation, asserting that his actions were part of his duties as an officer, not due to a personal relationship. 2. **Defense Strategy:** The defense tried to demonstrate that Lank provided special treatment to Albert because of their long-standing friendship, suggesting a potential bias in his professional conduct. 3. **Questioning the Relevance:** Motta questioned the relevance of bringing up a two-decade-old incident in the current case, suggesting it might not resonate with or be clear to the jury. 4. **Impression of Bias:** The defense aimed to show that local law enforcement, including Lank, might be biased in favor of the Albert family, potentially affecting the integrity of the case. 5. **Public Perception and Juror Interpretation:** Motta discussed how the jury might perceive Lank's involvement, whether they see it as an officer performing his duty or as a friend intervening in a fight, and how this perception could influence their view of the case's fairness. #BobMotta #TonyBrueski #HiddenKillers #ChrisAlbert #SergeantLank #DefenseDiaries #LegalAnalysis Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? On June 28th, 1972, in the case of Furman v. Georgia, the United States Supreme Court declared all existing death penalty laws in the country to be invalid. The decision was reached with a 5-4 vote, with each justice in the majority providing a separate opinion. The Court ruled that the death penalty, as applied at the time, violated the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. The decision led to a de facto moratorium on capital punishment throughout the United States until the case of Gregg v. Georgia in 1976, which allowed for the reinstatement of the death penalty. Furman v. Georgia also resulted in the invalidation of the death penalty for rape in the consolidated cases of Jackson v. Georgia and Branch v. Texas. The Court had intended to include another case, Aikens v. California, but it was dismissed as moot due to a separate ruling in California that deemed the death penalty unconstitutional under the state's constitution. In Furman, the justices in the majority expressed concerns about the arbitrary and discriminatory application of the death penalty, with Justices Stewart, White, and Douglas highlighting the racial bias in its imposition. Justices Brennan and Marshall went further, arguing that the death penalty itself was inherently cruel and unusual punishment and incompatible with evolving societal standards of decency. Marshall also raised concerns about the possibility of wrongful executions due to errors and perjury. The Florida Board of Bar Examiners has announced that it will not use the new version of the bar exam, known as the NextGen Bar Exam, when it is introduced in July 2026. Instead, Florida will continue to use its current bar exam format in 2026 and make a decision later on whether to adopt the NextGen exam after that. The board stated that incoming law students should be aware of the test they will be taking when they graduate in 2026, and this decision will also help law schools in planning their curriculum. The National Conference of Bar Examiners, which is developing the NextGen Bar Exam, agrees that clarity for examinees is important and respects Florida's decision. Florida is the fourth-largest jurisdiction for the bar exam in the United States and the first to publicly announce its position on the format of the July 2026 test. Other states, including California, have also expressed skepticism about the new bar exam and are considering alternative options. The NextGen Bar Exam aims to create a more integrated exam that focuses on legal skills rather than memorization of laws.Florida says no to new bar exam, for now | ReutersAMC Entertainment Holdings and retail investors known for their involvement in meme stocks will face off in a two-day court hearing in Delaware over a stock conversion plan. The court will consider approving a class action settlement worth an estimated $129 million, which would resolve allegations that AMC rigged a shareholder vote against common stockholders. The conversion plan would dilute common stock ownership but help the company pay down its debt. AMC has warned of its precarious financial situation and the potential for bankruptcy without the ability to raise capital, pending the resolution of the litigation. The settlement has faced objections from over 2,800 individuals seeking to opt out and sue separately, dismissing AMC's financial predictions as fear tactics. The investors leading the lawsuit argue that the settlement compensates common stockholders without jeopardizing AMC's future, and they urge the judge to reject the objections. AMC operates over 900 theaters globally and has expressed optimism about future box office sales.AMC, 'meme' investors to face off in court over stock conversion | ReutersCryptocurrency exchange FTX has filed a lawsuit against its former top lawyer, Daniel Friedberg, accusing him of aiding fraud committed by company founder Sam Bankman-Fried and suppressing reports of wrongdoing within the company. The complaint, filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, alleges that Friedberg acted as a "fixer" for FTX executives, enabling the misappropriation of customer funds. FTX claims that Friedberg settled employee complaints by paying inflated amounts and even hired law firms that represented whistleblowers to work for FTX. The lawsuit accuses Friedberg of legal malpractice and breaching his fiduciary duty, seeking the return of millions of dollars' worth of cryptocurrency and other compensation. FTX filed for bankruptcy in 2022, and Bankman-Fried has been criminally charged with misusing customer funds. Friedberg has reportedly cooperated with U.S. investigations into the FTX collapse.FTX accuses ex-lawyer of aiding Bankman-Fried's fraud, silencing whistleblowers | ReutersLittler Mendelson, a prominent law firm specializing in labor and employment matters, has been profiting from Starbucks' efforts to combat a unionizing campaign in its coffee shops across the United States. Littler has assigned over 110 attorneys, including more than 50 partners, to represent Starbucks in union-related cases since late 2021. While the exact amount Starbucks is paying Littler remains undisclosed, the significant number of outside lawyers reflects the substantial legal work generated by the company's anti-union drive. Starbucks, with its substantial revenue of over $32 billion in fiscal year 2022, has allocated significant resources to fight the union and defend against allegations of labor law violations. The majority of legal proceedings involve the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), where Starbucks Workers United has won the majority of elections but has yet to reach a collective bargaining agreement with the company. Starbucks has been hit with numerous unfair labor practice charges, and administrative law judges have ruled against the company in most cases. Starbucks has accused the NLRB of bias and collusion with the union. Littler, with its extensive network of offices nationwide, has become Starbucks' go-to law firm for NLRB-related work. The firm's attorneys from various offices have been involved in union-related cases across the country. Littler has built a reputation for advising companies on labor matters and is known for its aggressive approach to defending employers. The firm's expertise aligns with Starbucks' anti-union campaign, which has involved extensive litigation and resistance to union organizing.Littler Cashes in on Starbucks' Sprawling Anti-Union CampaignOpenAI LP, a leading generative artificial intelligence company, is facing a consumer class action lawsuit alleging that it engages in web scraping practices that misappropriate personal data on an extensive scale. The lawsuit claims that OpenAI's popular AI programs, ChatGPT and DALL-E, are trained using "stolen private information" obtained from hundreds of millions of internet users, including children, without proper authorization. The complaint asserts that OpenAI unlawfully accesses personal information from user interactions with its products and through integrations with platforms like Snapchat, Spotify, Stripe, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, enabling the collection of image, location, music preference, financial, and private conversation data. OpenAI is accused of conducting a secretive and massive web scraping operation, violating terms of service agreements, as well as state and federal privacy and property laws. The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, a federal anti-hacking law, is cited in the lawsuit. The complaint includes 16 plaintiffs who used various internet services, including ChatGPT, and believe their personal information was stolen by OpenAI. Microsoft Corp., which is investing in OpenAI, is also named as a defendant in the case. Melbourne hard rock outfit High As Hell have certainly done it hard as hell in their brief existence. After releasing their debut album Razorblade Dream during the bleak COVID years and not being able to fully tour or promote their music, High As Hell have wasted little time in rectifying that situation with a string of high energy gigs up and down the East Coast of Australia.Along the way the band have gathered a continually growing legion of fans who gravitate towards their stoner meets metal edged sound and now plan to give their debut release the respect it deserves by releasing it again, but this time on vinyl. To celebrate, High As Hell plan to commandeer The Old Bar in Melbourne on November 25 and are bringing with them their good mates from Duneeater, The Balls and Flying Dutchman to wreak havok. To tell us more HEAVY tracked down vocalist/guitarist Fazz Hellman to find out more information."In my eyes this one's gonna be one for the ages," he enthused. "It's a fully stacked line-up - and I know people say this shit all the time - but the bands are all of my favourite local bands. It's gonna be a very cool night."As mentioned the initial release of Razorblade Dream co-incided with lockdowns and the uncertainty of COVID, so having the chance to re-release the album on vinyl is of special significance to High As Hell."It's gotta be done," Fazz laughed. "People still love having that hard copy of music. There's still a lot of old school crew out there, and even the younger crew as well. It's just good to have artwork and something in your hands. We will have the full merch stand including vinyl going on the night. That's become a huge thing for us since having Youngy on board. He's mad about his merch and he does it well, so that's definitely one thing that we've learnt from him."In the full interview Fazz talks more about the launch party on November 25, the decision to release the album during COVID, the difficulties caused by that, the initial reception to Razorblade Dream, what High As Hell base their sound on, new music and the direction it is going, writing music during COVID without the luxury of being able to road test the songs live, the diversity in their music that enables them to play live with bands from King Parrot to Odius to Massic, their upcoming trip to Tasmania with King Parrot and more.

There's some really joyous stuff in this and there's also whatever the hell Chris was on about when discussing the latest from The Used. Four awesome 2020 songs discussed, an internet drop out, and a potential permanent rift in the collaboration that may never heal. But it probably will. Because we love doing this and hope you do too. Honestly, we're still vibing on Sauti Sol ft. Soweto Gospel Choir's song from last week, so get on that if you need to lift your mood. Or let us know anything you're digging - find @dugbyus on whatever social media you like.

One of the best parts of living in a city is having access to endless array of bars and restaurants, and the food and drinks are just the beginning of what draws us out. Aesthetics play a huge role in the experience we have when we go out, and design can make or break a successful bar, restaurant or lounge. How do we create spaces that feel authentic instead of clichéd? How do we entice social media buzz with design, and navigate the fickle world of design trends? Seattle restaurateur and designer Linda Derschang joins us to answer these questions and more.

Musicians, memoirs and maps: a bookish Curtin-side chat with Sarah Taylor and Sam Whiting. In this episode of This Must be The Place Elizabeth is joined by Sam Whiting, a PhD candidate and lecturer in popular culture in the school of Media and Communications at RMIT; and by Dr Sarah Taylor (Elizabeth’s sister), who recently completed a PhD on the historical geography of live music in Sydney and Melbourne and who is now a data scientist, also at RMIT. Sam’s PhD explores small live music venues: how they work as concentrations of cultural & social capital, and as places where acts get their first break. His study sites are The Old Bar and The Tote, in Melbourne’s inner north. Sarah’s PhD compared spatial patterns of live music in two cities over three decades, during which Sydney’s live music scene declined, and Melbourne’s grew, albeit both in spatially uneven ways. Sam and Sarah spoke with musicians about how they got started with gigs, and their experiences in different venues and cities. Inspired by Elizabeth recently reading autobiographies by Phil Collins and Johnny Marr, they discuss the ways musicians live and remember their lives in the context of spaces and places.

CW for the circle - mentions of suicide, sobriety, killing children women and unborn babies, mentions of animal cruelty Amber will be in the “Queer Here!” exhibition on tuesday (TODAY) the 17th at the Old Bar with our friend Rachel Morely amongst others https://www.facebook.com/events/149567465890521/ In this ep we talk Q&A, why we aren’t vegan & why we like DIY as an ethos Some reading I did re: Veganism http://veganfeministnetwork.com/is-veganism-ableist-a-disabled-vegan-perspective/ https://qz.com/749443/being-vegan-isnt-as-environmentally-friendly-as-you-think/?utm_source=parNYTS http://content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2110890-2,00.html If you dont listen to the ep we arent eschewing veganism because we hate vegans, we think being vegan is a admirable goal and we’d both like to move toward it in the future, but for health reasons it’s very difficult for us to be vegan/vegetarian right now, and for some people its not achievable
This is a very special episode for us as it features songs from Jess Locke, High Tension, Smith Street Band, during the legendary ‘Gig of The Century’ fundraising show for the #keepcommunityradio movement that took place at Crowbar in Brisbane on the 5th of June, 2016. a very big thank you for everybody who got involved in this show. The bands who dedicated their time, the venue who dedicated their business, and the patrons who donated their money. As you may be aware, The Federal Budget contains cuts of $1.4 million p.a., funding that currently keeps community radio stations like this one, broadcasting on digital radio in 5 capital cities. The good guys at The Smith Street Band helped organise this fundraising event and implemented a ‘pay what you feel’ payment model at the door, with all proceeds going to community radio. They managed to raise $3,500 on the day, and more importantly highlighted an important issue in our industry. The Smith Street Band: In only 5 years of existence The Smith Street Band have made a tremendous impact on the Australian music scene by revitalising the long forgotten genre that is a staple of our cultural identity; Pub Rock. Their raw punk rock sound with intelligent lyricism delivered in vocalist Wil Wagner's instantly recognisable, prominent and sharp Australian tone have made The Smith Street Band our new Pub Rock icons. High Tension: Coming from Collingwood in Victoria, High Tension are a brutal four piece that have been hitting it hard since their beginning in 2012. Fronted by the outright terrifying Jakarta born Karina Utomo, High tension will leave you in a dizzying state of disaster which is amplified ten fold during their live performances. Sounding like they’ve taken an influence from every possible style of heavy music and fused it together to make High Tension stand out in their own. They’ve released two albums so far through the Cooking Vinyl label, 2013’s ‘Death Beat’ and 2015’s ‘Bully’, both of which have received critical acclaim including ARIA award nominations, flawless reviews from music publications, and even the tick of approval from master of hardcore himself, Henry Rollins. The powerful thud behind the drum kit, with pounding fuzzed out bass lines, sharp erratic guitar, and the unpredictable howls, screams and slurs on the vocals make High Tension a band worth checking out. Jess Locke Band: Starting off as a solo project in 2009 and consisting of only her voice and acoustic guitar, Jess Locke recorded her first album ‘In the Bedroom’ literally in her bedroom, true DIY style. Over the years since, she has released another four DIY acoustic albums as well as a live album from The Old Bar in Melbourne. But in 2014 Jess decided to switch up her playing styles and bring in a few other elements like drums, percussion, bass, ukulele and even some good ol electric guitar. The lo-fi sounds of her DIY recordings, simple and effective melodies and blissful delivery of her sad girl lyricism create a powerful sound of her own that makes for very comfortable listening. Her latest track ‘Paper Planes’ was released at the start of June and is the first taste of her next album due for recording later in the year. All sets were Recorded at Crowbar on the 5th of June, 2016 by Branko Cosic. All sets mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 3rd July 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
Prior to 2010, if you mentioned Bar X to a Salt Lake City resident, a very particular image came to mind: a dive bar, cheap beer, no women allowed (until 1986, that is). It wouldn't necessarily be considered a downtown hot spot that locals and visitors flocked to. But when Bar X went up for sale, a very ambitious group had a vision for what Downtown Salt Lake City could be and knew that a revamped Bar X was the starting point. This new group of owners, with Richard Noel and Duncan Burrell at the forefront, were inspired by the craft beer and cocktail communities growing in New York City and Los Angeles and wanted to bring the Portland feel to the growing Salt Lake City community. This marriage of ideas led to Bar X opening as one of the first handcrafted cocktail bars in Salt Lake City. Immediately locals flocked to the new bar, and word spread quickly. With a staff full of cocktail connoisseurs and creative energy that flows throughout the entire space, Bar X threw down the gauntlet for all future development downtown. After an incredibly successful launch and initial few years, Richard and Duncan's love for craft brewing developed into Beer Bar, a beer-centric bar that offers the widest beer selection in the state, perfectly paired with a sausage menu that is locally made and bursting with flavor. With very distinct vibes and different offerings, Bar X and Beer Bar work in tandem to provide a variety of experiences all within close proximity.Six years later, Bar X and it's attached sister, Beer Bar, have introduced a new vibe and quality of nightlife that was a first in Salt Lake City. With hand-crafted cocktails made of high-quality ingredients and fresh-squeezed juice, these two downtown staples jumpstarted a revitalization for the cocktail and beer scene in Salt Lake City. Join us as we sit down with Richard Noel, Duncan Burrell, and Jeff Barnard as they tell us the fascinating story behind these two popular destinations, and how their vision and passion led to the creation of these unique bars. —This episode of The Utah Foodie was hosted by Chase Murdock and produced by Ryan Samanka. War Pigs: Describing their music in terms of epic space and divine cut throat blues sounds fairly audacious, but instrumental drone two piece Warpigs are not too far off the money. Made up of drummer Brian O’Dwyer and Andrew ‘Poly’ Polydourou, they’re an experimental group not afraid to indulge in a bit of ambient noise. The feature set we have for you today is a journey into the maw of carthathis and comes the band’s performance at The Old Bar in Melbourne around about March 2013. We also managed to catch up with Brian from the band to have a bit of a chat about how important live performance is to a band like Warpigs. Recorded and mixed by Brian O’Dwyer with some additional mixing from Dusty Anastassiou Recorded at the Old Bar, Melbourne, 2013. Adalita: I really don’t need to waste your time spruiking the credentials of Adalita Srsen. The charismatic singer of Geelong’s legendary Magic Dirt released a fine debut solo record way back in 2011. Our friends at BeauFM were present to record part of her set at BigSound 2011 and Live Delay is pleased to give some digital radio love to some of Adalita’s sublime live performance. Recorded and mixed by Matt Denver of D4 Studios at BigSound 2011 Produced by John Robinson for BeauFM. Airing details: First aired via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 5 July 2013. Production and engineering: Darragh Murray Thanks: Brian O’Dwyer, Dusty Anastassiou, John Robinson, Matt Denver, Beau FM
