Mike Trasatti spent 10 years in the automotive dealer software business before he found an auto dealer in Iowa who had built is own complete software system. They partnered up in 2008, and Mike became the first CEO of the spinout software company, DealerBuilt. DealerBuilt grew slowly as a bootstrapped startup in a market full of large incumbent competitors. They had a better approach to managing multiple dealers in a group with their dealer management system (DMS). DealerBuilt is powerful software that manages the entire financial operations of an auto dealer in the US. They grew steadily to 450 dealer customers and 100 employees in 10 years before deciding to partner with ParkerGale, a private equity investor, to help them with their next growth stage in 2019. Mike continued as CEO until 2023, navigating through the COVID years and acquiring several “tuck-in” products to extend the DealerBuilt solution. Mike is now an independent advisor to DealerBuilt and other organizations. Quote from Mike Trasatti, former CEO of DealerBuilt “You're constantly challenged in the entrepreneurial world. Do you really know what you're doing? Self-doubt can be tremendously harmful to CEOs. I don't think you can get into this business without a strong image of yourself and real confidence. “But you have to balance confidence with humility because you'll make mistakes. You're going to have setbacks every week, and some very big ones, too. You can't lose enthusiasm: You need enough confidence that you're on the right path and that will carry you more than anything else. Those who don't lose enthusiasm win. “When you have both confidence and humility, you won't be afraid to be around people who are better than you. And you'll feel comfortable in that space, leading smart people who are championing your journey. They will look at you and think, I want to be there with you to champion this for you. That's success as a leader.” Links Mike Trasatti on LinkedIn DealerBuilt on LinkedIn DealerBuilt website ParkerGale website – private equity investor in DealerBuilt The Practical Founders Podcast Tune into the Practical Founders Podcast for weekly in-depth interviews with founders who have built valuable software companies without big funding. Jimmy is joined by Katrina Calihan, Executive Coach and Co-Founder of Wind + Sail Leadership Partners, to discuss and demystify executive coaching. Jimmy and Katrina have been working together since 2019 when they launched L6, the leadership development program that has now become a staple inside ParkerGale and our portfolio businesses. On today's show, they discuss the landscape of executive coaching and why the impact of an executive coach can be so profound by “bringing you into the room” to a coaching engagement. They also give tips for finding the right coach if you are currently on the market. Katrina even gets Jimmy to talk a little about his own experience with his coach. This episode is especially for the skeptics. For you all, executive coaching may very well be one of the biggest investments in yourself or in the leaders around you that you aren't making. Listen to find out why.
ParkerGale's Partner, Devin Mathews, joins host Sean Mooney to discuss the value of culture, the importance of mental health, the economy's impact on fundraising, tips to weather the economic storm, the benefits of being yourself and more. To learn more, visit: https://bit.ly/3CfZxmZ
Jimmy is joined by David Cohen, Human Capital Partner at Kelso and Company. David has been working in the Human Capital / Private Equity space for over a decade and has helped shape the discipline across the PE industry. They break down the various ways that human capital can impact a portfolio business, including alignment to strategy, leadership effectiveness, talent acquisition, and org design. If there's a word that defines today's episode, it's alignment. It is at the center of how both Kelso and ParkerGale think about the human capital practice. To be successful, leadership need to get dozens, hundreds, or thousands of people organized around a common purpose and strategy. If you can't do that, not much else matters.
On this week's episode of M&A Masters, I'm revisiting my conversation with Ryan Milligan, Partner at ParkerGale. I am rewinding this episode for two reasons. The first is that the ParkerGale Capital podcast, The Private Equity Funcast opened the entire private equity world to me over five years ago. The second reason is in our conversation. Ryan and I dove deep into how ParkerGale uses a tool to actively measure culture to create improvements and make companies better places to work. As you probably know, culture is the biggest buzzword of the last few years. According to Caroline Castrillon, a contributor to Forbes, 2022 is the year of workplace culture—so this episode is worth another listen. Ryan says, “Culture is kind of a stew that's created from a whole list of things… the combination of communication… consistency and then listening to your organization.”Listen to learn: The unique way ParkerGale approaches deals, and how they are using transparency to circumvent surprises Which aspects of company culture are the most measurable, maintainable, and ripe for improvement How they use reps and warranties as a release valve for seller pressure The explosion of software and technology in a post pandemic era What the ideal ParkerGale target company looks like And more
Sometimes the recipe for a good discussion is to simply pick an important topic, invite two smart people who disagree with each other, and then sit back and listen. Today Paul Stansik, Operating Partner at ParkerGale, is joined by Cory Bray (MD at ClozeLoop) and Nelson Gilliat (Author of Death of the SDR: And the Birth of Buyer Centric Revenue) to talk about how to get prospecting and growth right. In the course of a rousing hourlong debate, Paul, Cory, and Nelson cover the spectrum of opinions on “how to prospect well”, the evolving role of the BDR/SDR, and where sales and marketing teams should focus to maximize their chances for success.

In this episode, we cover what NPS is, the benchmarks for a good NPS score, and most importantly, why we think it's important from both the portfolio company and private equity firm perspective. We discuss how ParkerGale uses NPS throughout the lifecycle of an investment, from due diligence, during our hold period, and prior to the sale of a company. We also share some of the key takeaways that our portfolio companies have learned when it comes to implementing a program, whether it's learning how to close the loop on the customer feedback or how it can help prioritize decision making across all functional areas.
On this week's episode of M&A Masters, we are joined by Ryan Milligan, Partner of ParkerGale. Guided by their principle – “products that matter, cultures that last” – ParkerGale is a small private equity firm that focuses on profitable, lower middle market technology companies and the convergence of private equity and software. “Let's just be transparent, and let's just give everyone the answers to the test,” Ryan says of the empathy he has learned in the market - take the competitive advantage off the table and make it about the people. We chat with Ryan about his journey to building a successful company and culture in ParkerGale, as well as: The excitement of working in the lower middle market The importance and art of measuring culture How a “Chief Worry Officer” can fit into risk decisions and dynamics Buyer diligence and reps and warranties The future of software post-pandemic And more Listen now...

As leaders we must understand both the Maker’s Schedule and the Manager’s schedule. A small interruption has the potential to completely derail progress of a development team, impacting clients and your business. Most leaders have never been trained to run a meeting or to understand the impact of what seems to be a small interruption. Yet, leaders are asked to run meetings every day. In the previous episode on the debate of the Manager’s Schedule vs the Maker’s Schedule Jim Milbery of ParkerGale and Alan Williamson of MacLaurin Group have friendly banter with Kelley Powell. They strongly suggest meetings are not the problem, rather it’s the leadership and how a meeting is run. Who are we kidding? They are quite blunt about it all. Cameron Herold, author of ‘Meetings Suck’, has written a book on the subject and joins the debate to teach leaders how to use focused, time effective meetings to grow your business. Cameron goes in depth about the importance of training your leaders and employees how to run a meeting, the types of meetings you should have, who should attend, and when to have them. Cameron has written a wonderful immediately actionable handbook for leaders to help turn something that most loath into one of the most valuable elements to a business. Hear Cameron, Jim, Alan, and Kelley as their friendly banter continues on a topic every employee should be better trained and informed on for both introverts and extroverts alike. When done right, effective meetings make us all and our companies better.
