Today's teacher is renowned historian Patrick Griffin. Patrick is the former chair of the Department of History at the University of Notre Dame. In 2021, he was named the Harold Vivian Harmsworth Visiting Professor of American History at the University of Oxford, perhaps the highest honor an American historian can receive. He joined us to explore “The Lessons of History” by Will and Ariel Durant, a book that has been repeatedly recommended to us over the years by some of the world's most compelling investors, leaders, thinkers, and builders. To quote the late great Charlie Munger, who was also a student of Durant, “There is no better teacher than history in determining the future.” This 100-page book is a masterful distillation of Durant's 11-volume 10,000-plus page magnum opus, “The Story of Civilization.” Whether you're looking to develop better pattern recognition in your work, or perhaps more existentially how to begin to even think about how and what to paint on this precious canvas that we call a human life. We hope you enjoy this class on “The Lessons of History” with the esteemed Patrick Griffin. Marian Tupy, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, discusses his book "Super Abundance" with Gene Tunny. Tupy argues that resources are becoming more abundant relative to global population, a concept he calls "super abundance." He explains that human ingenuity has led to cheaper commodities over time. Tupy refutes Malthusian predictions of resource scarcity, citing examples like the Haber-Bosch process for synthetic fertilizer. He also addresses environmental concerns, emphasizing that economic growth and technological advancements can mitigate issues like ocean and air pollution and resource depletion. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for Gene, please email him at contact@economicsexplored.com or send a voice message via https://www.speakpipe.com/economicsexplored. The biblical figure Tubalcain, a skilled metalworker mentioned in the Book of Genesis, holds symbolic and philosophical significance for the Masonic tradition. Freemasons view him as an embodiment of the pursuit of knowledge, human ingenuity, and the value of skill in service of humanity, with his mastery over metals representing the power of progress. The metals he worked with, bronze and iron, symbolize the combining of elements to create something stronger and the dual nature of human power to create and destroy. In Masonic tradition, Tubalcain represents the "master craftsman" who has honed skills to the highest level, not just technically but morally and spiritually, raising questions of how to responsibly wield skill and power.Show Notes:Read original article on SubstackWatch on YoutubeFollow the Daily Masonic Progress Podcast on SpotifySubscribe to the Daily Masonic Progress Podcast on Apple PodcastsRead and subscribe to Daily Masonic Progress on SubstackWatch and Subscribe Youtube

In this episode, host Vivek Ramaswamy discusses the importance of GDP growth and innovation in America with Marian Tupy, co-author of the book "Superabundance." They explore the counterintuitive relationship between population growth and economic growth, emphasizing the role of human ingenuity and innovation. The conversation touches on the negative effects of overregulation on innovation and the potential of nuclear energy to drive growth if the government loosened its grip on the market. They also delve into the parallels between environmentalism and religion and the importance of economic growth and innovation in addressing environmental issues. It's been another crazy week of financial news, but how do all these trends add up? This week, Danny Crichton and Josh Wolfe talk about South Korea's burgeoning desire for nuclear weapons, some themes from the latest Lux quarterly letter and how a 1980s experimental film inspired its theme of “entropic apex,” how Gen Z and others will respond to actions by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates and corporations to raise prices, some commentary on Twitter and Elon Musk and finally, a debate on whether Malthus was right on the future course of humanity.
Autism is a word that many people fear, but much of that fear is driven by the fact that the United States has classified autism as a disorder. What if we started to think of the autistic brain as just different, not disordered? What if we thought of the autistic brain as an asset, not a liability? We want to try and change the way you think about autism.

Their statistics tell them all these things will happen, and the end of the world is not. Some of them use it as a graft. The user is a way to get more money out of people. I mean, because people will use all sorts of tactics to try and get more money out of people, you know they don't necessarily need to be truthful. Maybe they believe in themselves. We need to do something to make some cash, so we'll use this as an excuse to raise funds. Whenever they do, these doom and gloom studies is what they do is they take it's it's a standard futures trick it's not a few streets technique you take something that's happening today, and you extrapolated, so you say you know this is the number this is the amount of grain. Being born in the year so if the man agrees if the metaphor that we create a year stays more or less straight like the the the the inclined curve is lower than the number of people who are born every year then all my god at some point the world will start there will start that's it you know that that it see how simple this is it's obvious isn't it we're never going to make enough food for enough people. But what is that person forgetting? What are they forgetting when they look at those numbers they are ignoring human ingenuity human inventiveness see this is the thing that I think a lot of these doom and gloom folks don't understand is that we are problem-solving creatures that are what human beings are, and we when we are given a. And this is why these doom and gloom folks the big can't see beyond the extrapolations they have today. They have to understand that at some point in the future. I think they said something like the world could not possibly handle 4000000000 people 5000000000 people 6000000000 people some billing people 8000000000 people as we grow and grow and grow and grow we can still handle those people because of technology advances have been able to feed those people so the more people we, the more people we create some more food we can create for those people. I mean, look at the problem with global warming. Let's say you're one of those folks who believe in global warming. You believe that the biggest problem is meat consumption that it's all these cows farting everywhere they're creating all this methane in the atmosphere, which is the biggest problem. We need to reduce meat consumption, so if we don't reduce meat consumption, it is the end of the world in 12 years or something like that. What happens? We create our meat; we start eating less meat, create plant-based alternatives to the meat or genetically cloned meat. We figured out how to make a burger; I mean, it's a $300000 burger. Still, it's a real burger cloned from meat. It's not growing. Extend the planet's life if you believe that that's what's causing the biggest problems, so you see, we have our best minds working on this. The human race is working on all of these intractable issues, and so far, we've been able to figure some of them out. Now there's some we haven't figured out yet, but we're progressing, and that's why when you hear about doom and gloom and all these horrible things happening, you have to factor in human inventiveness. If you factor in human inventiveness, you can see yourself wait a minute. Maybe some of these things will not occur because we'll be able to figure out how to get around human beings. Intelligent human beings will be able to figure it out. That is what we are we're problem-solving animals in. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thinkfuture/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thinkfuture/support

A ticking bomb, an empty room with a hanger from the dry-cleaners, a radiator, two in captivity with their hands tied behind their backs, and that's it. With less than 60 seconds left on the clock, only MacGyver can stay focused and optimistic, get himself untied, get his companion freed and flip the trick back on the assailant at the speed of lightening. Amol Rajan explores different ways of thinking, and how far humans can be seen as unique for their ability to invent. In The Pattern Seekers, Simon Baron-Cohen shows how humans have evolved remarkable ingenuity in every area of their lives – from the arts to the sciences – by using complex systemizing mechanisms. He says this ability to formulate if-and-then processes has driven progress for more than 70,000 years. He goes on to argue that the areas of the brain important for systemizing overlap with those for autism. As the Director of the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University, Baron-Cohen wants to challenge people to think differently about an often misunderstood condition. The archaeologist Rebecca Wragg Skyes is also seeking to challenge people’s perceptions. In Kindred: Neanderthal Life, Love, Death and Art, she builds a picture of an ancient ancestor who was far from being a brutish thug. She depicts the Neanderthals as curious and clever connoisseurs of their world: technologically inventive and artistically inclined. Humans may have been the survivors but Wragg Sykes argues that we are not necessarily uniquely special - we share many traits and DNA with our Neanderthal relatives. Susan Carvahlo started her career as an archaeologist with a fascination for human evolution, but her interest in uncovering knowledge of our ancestors led her to become one of the main founders of the field of Primate Archaeology. For decades she has been studying stone-tool use by wild chimpanzees in West Africa. Alongside another project in the Rift Valley, she’s looking to use the knowledge gained from non-human primates to expand understanding of human origins and behaviour. Producer: Katy Hickman

Sermon Summary 2 Corinthians 5:6–7 (ESV) 6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. Pastor Chris shared a message that has been in his spirit, and on his heart, for about 8 months – By Faith. We are to live “by faith” according to God’s Word. Our sight is limited to contained reality. When we exert human effort to accomplish works for ourselves, even for the church or the kingdom, we become exhausted with anxiousness, striving, and worry. Our Lord and Father invites us to trust Him to shed stress, worry and fatigue of doing and thinking of all the possible outcomes ourselves. Rather, we are to point our feet in the direction of faith (not feelings) and begin taking a step. Faithfulness will challenge us to give up control, comfort, and self-reliance. These are smokescreens of the enemy. Chris emphatically challenged us to surrender our own ideas, initiatives, and imperatives and anticipate that God will replace them with His. Corrie Ten Boom, a survivor of the Holocaust describes faith as an acrostic: Fantastic Adventure In Trusting Him Consider these two lists which sum up the tension that exists in us when we should trust God, yet rely on ourselves: Seven Weaknesses of Walking by Sight 1. Human Sufficiency 2. Human Resources 3. Human Wisdom 4. Human Ingenuity 5. Human Calculation 6. Human Strength 7. Human Comfort Seven Strengths of Walking by Faith 1. Christ's Suffienciency 2. Christ's Resources 3. Christ's Wisdom 4. Christ's Power 5. Christ's Direction 6. Christ's Enablement 7. Christ's Stretch Three Aspects of Biblical Faith 1. Faith Pleases God ” 1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. 4 By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. 5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.” 1 John 2:16 (ESV) 2. We are Saved by Faith to Walk in Faith “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8–9 (ESV) “The righteous shall live by his faith.” Habakkuk 2:4 (ESV) “The righteous shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17 (ESV) God is saying, “Believe me!” Walk without the end in mind, but expect the miracle of God to provide. He loves it when we say, “I don’t know how this will happen, but I’m going to trust you!” It doesn’t seem to make sense, but I know that God is good and gives good gifts to His children. 3. Faith is to be Exercised Regularly “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil 1:6) “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise” (Proverbs 13:20) “8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. Hebrews 11:8–9 (ESV) 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.” Hebrews 11:11 (ESV) “17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.” Hebrews 11:17, 19 (ESV) God wants us to join Him in the adventure! Discussion Questions 1. How do you think we can build churches to endure in an increasing godless world? 2. In what ways are believers tempted to walk by sight? 3. Share a time when you were prompted by the Spirit to walk in faith. What was your answer? What was His response? 4. What are some faith accounts in the Bible that have motivated you to “walk by faith?” Application Questions 1. What is a need or godly desire that you have that could only be accomplished by stepping out in faith? 2. Seek the Lord in prayer for a faith-step you will take this week. Once you have the answer, share with someone what it is and commit to sharing the results!
