I was truly fortunate to sit with women as they spoke so profoundly from their hearts about their faith-in-action toward the Parliament's themes of:  a call to conscience, the support of the human rights and dignity of women, and the care of the next generations of children (which, of course includes care of our earth). Daniel Lubetzky is the founder and executive chairman of Kind, the multi-billion-dollar food company that's become a household name. The Kind brand is known as a healthier snack food with a social cause. In this episode, Jeremy and Talia dive into Daniel's entrepreneurial journey, the lessons other founders can gain from his experience, and how he built a food empire with a mission. How failures of his previous venture (PeaceWorks) led to successes at Kind: “PeaceWorks was a decade, which you could say was the lost decade, but it was a decade of lessons. So many mistakes that I made were two steps forward, two steps back,” Daniel reflects. “I held onto those lessons, some of them very painful. Right now, I can wax poetically about it, but I literally cried in my basement or in my studio apartment many times when I felt that I just had a huge defeat, but eventually, I had the idea for Kind about 10 years later, and I absolutely attribute a lot of the successes of Kind to the early failures of PeaceWorks. A lot of the mistakes that I made in the early years helped me make sure I didn't make them again with Kind.” Fundraising for a consumer packaged goods company: “By the time we did our first private equity investment, we kind of skipped the Series A,” Daniel said. “We got the friends and family angel investment, and then we didn't have an investment until Kind had already $30 to $50 million under its belt, and it was like a very, very exciting company for a lot of investors. All the private equity firms were lining up that they wanted to invest in Kind. So the total that we ever invested in Kind, in the company, in the life of our company was $5.2 million. The $100,000 from my friends, and the $5.1 million from my investor BMG. Ever since then, whenever we brought in investors it's more to sell our shares to them, but Kind has never needed it.” The value of immigration in America: “I would not be alive today were it not because of not just the immigration policies, but the courage of Americans who rescued a continent. My father was liberated by American soldiers, and I immigrated to the United States as a 15-and-a-half, 16-year-old kid. So were it not for that, I would have not been able to provide thousands of jobs to Americans, and my story repeats itself across the board to the point that the number's stunning of the number of Fortune 500 founders or CEOs that are immigrants or children of immigrants is enormous. [As immigrants], we are an important addition to the makeup of society because we see things. We don't take democracy for granted. We don't take freedom for granted. We don't take rule of law for granted, so those of us who came from countries that had much less perfect democracies, that had no rule of law, really, really appreciate and cherish, and will do everything we can to defend those values. I do think that for all us Americans it's really important to not take these things for granted.” To learn more about the show go to bvp.com/atlas/this-is-series-a

KIND Snacks today is a business valued in the billions of dollars, but this wasn't Daniel Lubetzky's first food company. That would be PeaceWorks – a venture with the lofty goal of bringing Jews and Arabs together through mutually beneficial trade. What they have in common is a strong sense of mission. KIND bars come in mostly clear packaging, intentionally showing buyers exactly what's inside. Lubetzky started out selling $100 worth of bars at a time – he says he now sells more than 1 billion in a year – and he believes in making a simple, straightforward promise about the ingredients inside. In our conversation for the Fortt Knox 1-on-1 this week, I talked to Lubetzky about how his family's legacy as Holocaust survivors informs the way he thinks about entrepreneurship and mission. He also talks about mistakes he made along the way. Also in this week's episode: It’s upon us: the holiday season. I don’t know about you, but I got an email come-on from Amazon about early Black Friday deals the day after Halloween. Talk about scary.   So: If you’re an entrepreneur, how do you break through the noise this holiday season? If you’re a shopper, how will you get the best deals?   Joining me to untangle this retail riddle I’ve got a great panel of experts:   Adam Glassman is creative director at O Magazine, and has been preparing for this season for more than six months. Stephen Sadove is former chairman and CEO of Saks, and an adviser to Mastercard. James 3:18 NLT 'And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.' My work as a mediator was carried out through Peaceworks, which as the name suggests, offered support to individuals and groups seeking to resolve conflict. Most of us prefer to live at peace with our family, neighbours and work colleagues, as opposed to conflict. As I have sat with conflicted individuals, the level of stress they speak of is off the scale and something that threatens their health. Jesus reminds us that the peacemakers are indeed blessed for they are the children of God, a term each one of us, if we know him, can apply to ourselves. However, am I a peacemaker? Certainly I sign up to be. Yet, my life is more often a churning sea of anxiety stirred by resentment, fear, frustration and anger. My emotions, albeit hidden deep within, must express themselves in the life I choose to lead. As I have deliberately withdrawn from a lot of activity and focused upon prayer, many of the emotions that drove me are not easily tamed. Where once I might blame my circumstances as a carer dealing with a highly stressful set of circumstances, what is my excuse today? Somehow I am dislocated from the source of my peace, Jesus, its Prince. Was it not Jesus who breathed peace into and upon his disciples before his ascension? Why is it, then, as an experienced, faithful and committed disciple I so easily lose my peace with the newsreader’s narrative or my interaction with fellow image-bearers of Christ? I am responsible to nurture that seed of peace sown within. I shall not do this as long as I maintain a programme of self-promotion, in which I place myself centre stage. It is only as I die to self, as mortality falls into the soil of life, that the seed of peace stands a chance of becoming fruitful and germinating. Dying is not merely the final act of my mortality, it is a deliberate choice motivated by the degree to which I desire to draw close to God. QUESTION: Do you ever catch yourself criticising others, avoiding people, struggling to empathise or find compassion? PRAYER: Lord, may your peace rest on all those who are filled with stress, worry and anxiety today.
