On Thanksgiving Day 1934, police in Tulsa, Oklahoma found the dead body of John Gorrell Jr., a Kansas City dental student, slumped behind the wheel of his car, which had come to a stop at a downtown intersection. Gorrell had been shot in the head twice with his own gun and his wallet and other valuables were missing, leading police to conclude he had been killed in a botched robbery. Just one day later, the residents of Tulsa were shocked to learn that Gorrell hadn't been killed by a robbery, but by his friend Phil Kennamer, and his motive wasn't robbery.At the peak of the Great Depression, newspaper reports of violent crime were nothing new. In this case, however, the victim was the son of a prominent local physician and his killer the son of a well-known US District Court judge. The privileged backgrounds of the victim and killer were enough to captivate the residents of Tulsa, but as the strange details of the story slowly emerged in the days that followed, the case quickly grew from local sensation to national fascination. One notable field is preventive medicine, and within it, we find something called lifestyle medicine. But what sets lifestyle medicine apart? What makes it special in promoting health? Let's break down the uniqueness of lifestyle medicine and understand how it stands out among various medical approaches. In today's episode, I sit down with Dr. Beth Frates, the President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Beth Frates, MD is a trained physiatrist and a health and wellness coach, with expertise in Lifestyle Medicine. She is an award-winning teacher at Harvard Medical School, where she is an assistant clinical professor. Dr. Frates is one of the first Fellows of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and a pioneer in lifestyle medicine. She developed and taught a college Lifestyle Medicine curriculum at the Harvard Extension School in 2014 and it is still one of the most well-received courses offered at the school. She was voted president of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine in August 2020. Dr. Frates serves as President from November 2022- November 2024. She authored a Lifestyle Medicine syllabus, which can be downloaded through the ACLM website, to serve as a template for other instructors and professors. More recently, her book titled “The Lifestyle Medicine Handbook: An Introduction to the Power of Healthy Habits” was included in a list of the 100 Best Medicine Books of All Time by BookAuthority. Dr. Amy Comander is a breast oncologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. She is Director of Breast Oncology and Cancer Survivorship at the Mass General Cancer Center in Waltham and at Newton Wellesley Hospital, and Medical Director of the Mass General Cancer Center in Waltham. Dr. Comander is Director of Lifestyle Medicine at the Mass General Cancer Center, which is the first cancer center to have a dedicated lifestyle medicine program. As an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, she enjoys teaching medical students and residents about oncology, as well as lifestyle medicine.Given her strong interest in cancer survivorship and lifestyle medicine, Dr. Comander is dedicated to improving the quality of life, well-being, and outcome of individuals with cancer through important lifestyle interventions, including exercise, diet, and mind/body interventions. She promotes healthy lifestyles for both her active treatment patients as well as those in the survivorship phase of care. She practices what she preaches, having run marathons, including ten consecutive Boston Marathons so far, with the goal to improve the lives of those with a diagnosis of cancer.In collaboration with Dr. Beth Frates, she has launched “PAVING the Path to Wellness,” a 12-week lifestyle medicine-based survivorship program for women with breast cancer. Along with Dr. Frates and Dr. Michelle Tollefson, she has published the “PAVING the Path to Wellness” workbook. Dr. Comander is currently proud to serve as the first oncologist on the Board of Directors of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. She is also on the Board of the Ellie Fund, a non-profit that provides services and support to women diagnosed with breast cancer in Massachusetts. She is a medical advisor to the non-profit organization, SurvivingBreastCancer.org. She has served as a medical advisor to Oneinforty, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating people of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage about the one-in-forty chance of having inherited a BRCA mutation. In this episode Morehead State University Baseball Coach Mik Aoki shares his experiences in transformational coaching, building culture and how to give those you lead the best chance for success as people, students and players. With a pedigree encompassing more than 450 collegiate wins and more than 50 draft picks by Major League organizations, Mik Aoki is now in his third year as head baseball coach at Morehead State. Aoki (A-Oh-key) led the baseball program at Notre Dame for nine seasons after serving as the head coach at Boston College for four campaigns.  He also held the head coaching spot at Columbia. Forty of his players over his time as a head coach have been named all-conference. Aoki piloted the Irish to 248 wins while seeing 26 of his student-athletes drafted into MLB organizations, including a first-round pick. Four of his players went on to stints with Major League teams, including current Notre Dame alums Caven Biggio (Toronto) and Trey Mancini (Baltimore). In addition to on-field success, Aoki's Notre Dame clubs raised more than $75,000 for charity from 2014-19, including awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease). In 2018 and 2019, the baseball team won “The Trophy” at ND for the team most committed to community service. In 2018, his team alone logged more than 1,000 hours of community service. His teams also consistently turned in 3.0 or better team grade point averages. Aoki has been a strong advocate for the Pete Frates #3 Fund since the diagnosis of his former outfielder, Pete Frates, with ALS in 2012. Frates was a freshman at Boston College during Aoki's first season as BC and served as team captain on the 2007 Eagles squad which was Aoki's first as head coach. Since Frates' diagnosis and ultimate death from ALS, Aoki has helped raise thousands for the foundation to help offset his medical costs and fund research for a cure to ALS. ALS is going to take my son away. I have grieved and my family has grieved every day for seven and a half years. We know what the outcome is, but you cannot speak about this journey without acknowledging the gifts we have also been given. -Nancy Frates You've heard of The Ice Bucket Challenge, right? This is the story of how it came about. On March 13, 2012 Nancy Frates accompanied her son Pete to a doctor's appointment. Only 27 years old, he had been a superb, lifelong athlete. In fact, Pete had played professional baseball in Europe following his graduation from Boston College. Now living in Boston and making his way in the insurance industry, Pete had been hit in the wrist by a fastball in a summer league and thought he had a pinched nerve. When the doctor said tests confirmed he had ALS, Petes' mother Nancy admits: “I didn't know what ALS was. I just knew it was bad.” Also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, after the famous New York Yankees baseball player who died of the disease in 1941, ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. There is no treatment and no cure for ALS and the average patient lives 2-5 years after diagnosis. During that time, muscles are rendered useless and ALS is 100% fatal. No one would have blamed Nancy Frates if she shut herself in a dark room and cried for days, weeks, or even months, but that is not what Peter wanted. Instead, he gathered his family and his friends and formed team Frate Train. Using the power of social media, Pete showed the world what ALS was doing to him and was determined to raise awareness and money for research. Pete is the inspiration for The Ice Bucket Challenge, a worldwide fundraising phenomenon that raised 220 million dollars for the ALS Foundation and its global partners. Married and the father of a 5 year old daughter named Lucy, Pete Frates is still alive, experiencing daily moments of joy his daughter and loved ones bring him. His mother remains steadfast in her love for her son and her passion to find a cure she knows will not come in time for him. “My husband and I cry, but we also cry tears of joy because look at what this child of ours has done. Look at the people he has inspired.
