Glioblastoma has a long-term survival rate under 1% at ten years. After decades of research focusing primarily on mutation-targeted therapies, median survival has improved by only a few months. Dr. Tomás Duraj believes there's a better path forward.Dr. Duraj is a physician-scientist at Boston College working on the metabolic vulnerabilities of cancer. In this Metabolic Health Summit presentation, he outlines a clinical framework for studying ketogenic metabolic therapy — one built on biomarker-driven protocols, not dietary guesswork. The core argument: cancer cells depend on specific metabolic pathways for survival. Block those pathways while providing alternative fuels to healthy cells, and you create a therapeutic window that most tumors can't escape. Why cancer cells metabolically resemble organisms from 2 billion years agoThe limits of the somatic mutation theory and why most targeted gene therapies have underdeliveredSubstrate level phosphorylation vs. oxidative phosphorylation — and why the distinction mattersThe Glucose-Ketone Index as a measurable, actionable biomarkerThe press-pulse strategy: sustained metabolic pressure paired with targeted interventionsHow to protect healthy tissue before targeting tumor metabolismRepurposed pharmacological approaches and the need for publicly funded clinical trialsThe case for small, non-randomized pilot studies with highly motivated patientsMetabolic therapy represents the future of medicine: a coherent clinical strategy grounded in decades of research and increasingly recognized by physicians and scientists across disciplines. For practitioners seeking complementary approaches that extend the reach of oncological therapeutics, this presentation lays out a practical roadmap for integrating emerging insights with standard care.✅Genova Connect – Get 15% off any test kit with code METABOLICLINK here.✅ iRestore - Get a huge discount on the iRestore Illumina Face Mask when you use the code METABOLICLINK here.✅Piquelife.com - Get the Pu'er Bundle for 20% off here.In every episode of The Metabolic Link, we'll uncover the very latest research on metabolic health and therapy. What if the food you eat could change the way you breathe at night? In this episode, recorded live at The Metabolic Health Summit, Dr. Jonathan Jun reveals how metabolism and sleep-disordered breathing are deeply connected, and why shifting from carbs to fat might improve more than just your waistline.Dr. Jonathan Jun, a leading researcher on obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), walks us through the groundbreaking KETOHS trial, where a ketogenic diet was tested for its effects on carbon dioxide retention, sleep apnea severity, and metabolic health. The findings suggest ketosis may do more than promote weight loss - it could directly enhance respiratory efficiency and sleep quality in patients with OHS and OSA.From a long-forgotten 1976 fasting study to modern clinical data, this lecture reframes the connection between diet, breathing, and metabolism, revealing how nutritional ketosis might transform respiratory and metabolic medicine.Questions Answered in This Episode:Why does fuel choice (carbs vs. fat) matter for breathing in people with sleep-disordered breathing? What exactly happens in obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), and why is it more dangerous than OSA alone? Why did a 1976 starvation ketosis study inspire modern trials on ketogenic diets for OSA/OHS?How was the KETOHS trial designed to isolate the effects of ketosis itself (not just weight loss)? Can a ketogenic diet improve sleep apnea severity even without CPAP therapy? Is the improvement in CO₂ clearance explained only by weight loss, or something else? What metabolic changes accompany ketogenic therapy in this context? This episode will change the way you see the link between diet and breathing, and may open new doors for treating some of the toughest sleep and metabolic disorders.Special thanks to the sponsors of this episode:✅Genova Connect – Get 15% off any test kit with code METABOLICLINK here. ✅ ZocDoc - Find and instantly book a top-rated doctor here.✅ Fatty15 – Get 15% off a 90-day Starter Kit with code METABOLICLINK here.In every episode of The Metabolic Link, we'll uncover the very latest research on metabolic health and therapy. With a focus on periodic fasting interventions, Dr. Longo highlights the role of FMD in activating stem cells, enhancing cellular repair mechanisms, and even reversing metabolic dysfunctions like insulin resistance and type 1 diabetes.Dr. Longo's work is paving the way for more accessible, non-invasive therapies for chronic conditions, with far-reaching implications for aging, cancer prevention, and metabolic health. If you're an academic, medical professional, or researcher, you won't want to miss this in-depth discussion on how FMD could shape the future of medicine.Valter Longo, PhD, is the Edna Jones Professor in Gerontology, the Director of the USC Longevity Institute and group leader at the IFOM cancer research institute in Milan, Italy. His laboratories study the fundamental mechanisms of aging in yeast, rodents and humans by using genetics and biochemistry techniques. The focus is on the nutrient-response signal transduction pathways that regulate disease and longevity. This work led to the discovery of the effects of periodic fasting and fasting mimicking diets on multi-system stem cell activation and regeneration in mice, and to clinical trials on a range of age-related diseases.Special thanks to the sponsors of this episode: Genova Connect: Receive 15% off any of their tests with code metaboliclink at https://gdx.net/themetaboliclinkAG1: This November, AG1 is offering a free gift with your first subscription plus a Welcome Kit at https://DrinkAG1.com/METABOLICLINK—while supplies last!Ned: Get 15% off Ned products with code METABOLICLINK at https://helloned.com/metaboliclinkLearn more about Dr. Valter Longo here.In every episode of The Metabolic Link, we'll uncover the very latest research on metabolic health and therapy. What started as a personal journey with metabolic health turned into a captivating exploration of the lipid energy model and lean mass hyper responders. Dr. Norwitz shares the dramatic results of his unorthodox study, where a diet consisting primarily of Oreos led to a jaw-dropping 70% reduction in LDL cholesterol. We discuss the implications of his findings, the challenges he's faced in the scientific community, and the importance of asking uncomfortable questions in pursuit of knowledge. This episode is an opportunity to watch an engaging lecture filled with scientific awe, unexpected results, and a call to action for more open-minded discussions in metabolic health!Dr. Nick Norwitz has a mission to “Make Metabolic Health Mainstream.” He graduated Valedictorian from Dartmouth College in 2018, majoring in Cell Biology and Biochemistry. He then completed his PhD in Metabolism at the University of Oxford in 2021, before attending Harvard Medical School to complete his MD. Dr. Norwitz enthusiasm for the field of Metabolism derives from a personal struggle with severe Inflammatory Bowel Disease that left him physically emaciated, mentally depleted, and emotionally fragmented. In desperation, he found that a ketogenic diet put his disease into remission where conventional approaches had failed.Special thanks to the sponsor of this episode: Genova Connect, powered by Genova Diagnostics offers easy access to advanced lab tests. Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 656 How is slow metabolism related to a lack of purpose and not genetics? Ben Azadi, Metabolic Health Expert and Founder of Keto Kamp, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 656, to talk about the key factors that helped him lose weight, how you create a prison inside your head, why the environment you're in has the power to change your life, and what most people get wrong about slow metabolism. "93% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy because they're not living a life on purpose with their purpose. When you're clear on that and you start to change your thoughts and become aware of what's going on in your environment, everything else clicks." - Ben Azadi
The ketogenic diet has surged in popularity over the last few years. According to data from the Food Information Council, 23 million Americans chose to follow a ketogenic diet in 2022, which is more than double the number from just 4 years prior (10 million in 2018). With this surge in popularity, however, comes a surge in criticism along with the adulteration of the original therapeutic principles that inevitably accompany a diet's commercialization. It's time to clear through the confusion and get to what the research is showing us. In this episode of the RWS Clinician's Corner we are joined by one of the world's topmost experts in the ketogenic diet: Dr. Dominic D'Agostino. In this interview, we do a deep dive into what every nutrition professional needs to know about the ketogenic diet: When this diet is best used clinically; when it's contraindicated; and how to structure it for best results. What the latest research is telling us about the therapeutic application of this protocol - from metabolic health to neurological considerations and cancer Exogenous ketones: when and how to use them. This switch, evolved in nature to help animals prepare for times of scarcity, is now being inadvertently activated in humans by our modern high-carbohydrate, high-sugar diets.Through detailed scientific explanation and insightful case studies, Dr. Johnson illuminates how fructose's unique metabolic effects - including its ability to lower ATP levels, induce leptin resistance, and promote fat storage - are the driving forces behind the rise of metabolic syndrome and its associated conditions.Equally important, Dr. Johnson offers practical dietary recommendations and strategies to help individuals navigate this complex landscape, emphasizing the importance of reducing sugar, refined carbs, and processed foods, while embracing a low-carb, nutrient-dense approach. This eye-opening episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand the root causes of the metabolic health crisis and learn evidence-based solutions to reclaim their wellbeing.Special thanks to our sponsors:Genova Connect, powered by Genova Diagnostics, offers easy access to advanced lab tests, covering key health areas like metabolic health, nutrition, gut health, immune function, and hormones. In this episode of The Metabolic Link, Victoria Field, Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, and Dr. Angela Poff dive into a fascinating new paper that compares the metabolic and immune impacts of ketogenic and vegan diets in humans. The study, titled “Differential Peripheral Immune Signatures Elicited by Vegan Versus Ketogenic Diets in Humans” takes a deep dive into the multi-omic effects of these two very different dietary approaches. The researchers found that just two weeks on a ketogenic diet significantly enhanced markers of adaptive immunity, while the vegan diet was associated with increased innate immune function. The hosts unpack these findings, discussing the potential mechanisms behind the divergent immune signatures, the limitations of the short-term study design, and the need for further research. They also highlight the importance of carefully standardizing the macronutrient and micronutrient compositions of the dietary interventions to isolate the key drivers of the observed changes.Overall, this episode provides a thought-provoking look at the profound impacts that diet can have on the functioning of our immune system, setting the stage for future studies exploring the therapeutic potential of nutritional approaches. This episode is sponsored by Genova Diagnostics. Brain health impacts every single area of our lives, including our quality of life as we age. Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease are becoming increasingly more common, but this growing epidemic is not a normal or inevitable part of aging. Genetic predisposition only drives around 5% of cases, so the power is in our hands to implement healthy habits and prevention strategies to ward off neurodegeneration. Today's guest, Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, is an expert in neuroscience and neuropharmacology. He is a tenured associate professor at the University of South Florida, a research scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, and the creator of the website, Keto Nutrition. Dom's impressive resume also includes working as a research investigator on NASA's Extreme Environment Mission Operation. In his research lab, the main focus is studying the neuroprotective effects of the ketogenic diet, and that's what you're going to learn about today. You're going to learn about the connection between brain health and metabolic health. We're diving into fascinating topics, including how the brain changes as we age, specific biomarkers to measure your overall health, and how indicators like sleep and gut health can impact your brain. Dom is truly a wealth of knowledge, and I hope this episode empowers you to take control of your brain health so you can live your best life as you age. In this episode you'll discover: What the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is. The percentage of Alzheimer's disease diagnoses that are genetically driven. How metabolic health is tied to age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Specific biomarkers you should be monitoring for brain health. The connection between Alzheimer's disease and glucose metabolism in the brain. How elevating ketones improves brain blood flow. What therapeutic ketosis is. How the brain's ability to process different energy sources changes as we age. What we know about the metabolic components of Alzheimer's disease. Different ways to achieve therapeutic ketosis. The connection between neuroinflammation and sleep quality. How zonulin can lead to leaky gut. Similarities between leaky gut and junctions in the blood-brain barrier. The link between gut health and the immune system. What metabolic psychiatry is. The benefits of using a continuous glucose monitor. How consuming liquid sugar impacts the gut and metabolism. The intestinal barrier serves as a gatekeeper to the human body. The loss of the health and integrity of this barrier influences multiple aspects of human health – including cardiometabolic function, neurological health, behavior, and more – in surprising and unexpected ways. One of these ways involves lipopolysaccharide, or LPS, a bacterial product that arises in the intestine, and its interaction with far distal tissues and organs via the induction of immune mediators. Dr. Rhonda Patrick was the keynote speaker for the Metabolic Health Summit, held May 5 – 8, 2022, in Santa Barbara, California. Her presentation described the role that intestinal permeability and bacterial products play in aging, inflammation, and chronic disease.
