The Dick Barbour Interview. Buckle up people and enjoy a thrilling ride with a man who bought a used Porsche Speedster at 16, won his first-ever race in it, built a parts-selling mega business, and then became a Porsche-Audi dealer. Those endeavors simply funded his bigger goal to be a top-level race driver and team owner, where he scored wins in every endurance race in the world that matters. Phew! Then he takes 20 years off and does it again. His proudest achievement after a Hall of Fame career? He'll share it during the interview. We also visit the surprising new Consumer Reports ‘reliability' lists. BMW at the Top? Whoa! But it's true. Foiling ferry to become the world's fastest electric passenger ship Ministers face calls to build battery ‘gigafactories’   Show #1036   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 29th March. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   PORSCHE CHOOSES NOT TO USE VW GROUP'S UPCOMING EV PLATFORM "A few weeks ago, we reported that Volkswagen Group has plans to switch to a single electric car platform. The group announced that all brands under its umbrella would eventually move from the current [MEB] architecture to the upcoming SSP platform. However, we did report that it would be used "for most cars from most brands in the future."" says InsideEVs: "Now, we understand that Porsche reportedly isn't interested in following suit. Instead, the luxury German automaker plans to use the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform that it spent years developing alongside partner brand Audi. Porsche will first use the PPE architecture for its upcoming all-electric Macan SUV, which it says will come to market in the second half of 2022. Audi's Q6 e-tron SUV, which is based on the electric Macan, will also use the PPE platform."   https://insideevs.com/news/496723/porsche-wont-use-vw-group-upcoming-ev-platform/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQS SPIED WITH LESS CAMO As the world premiere of the Mercedes-Benz EQS is getting closer, more and more prototypes of the car are seen with less and less camouflage. Here we can see the new video from walkoARTvideos, which shows us a white unit with camouflage only on the front and rear part. Mercedes-Benz intends to make the EQS the most aerodynamic car ever produced in series, with Cd as low as 0.20. The door handles hide inside the doors and we can also note a large panoramic glass roof." reports Motor1.com "Mercedes-Benz has no choice but to maximise the specs to compete with the Tesla (refreshed Model X), upcoming Rivian R1S and Lucid "Gravity.""   https://uk.motor1.com/news/497374/mercedes-eqs-less-camo-video/   IONIQ 5 PRODUCTION DELAYED BY ELECTRIC MOTOR SHORTAGE "Hyundai Motor’s electric vehicle (EV) drive is facing an unexpected bump in the road as it has been forced to slash production of its ambitious Ioniq 5 SUV due to a shortage of components. Hyundai Motor had planned to make 10,000 Ioniq 5s in April at its Ulsan factory, but has now slashed that goal to 2,600 units as Hyundai Mobis, an auto parts affiliate of Hyundai Motor, failed to manufacture enough electric motors for the model." says Korea Joongang DAily: "Hyundai Motor’s Ioniq 5, the first EV model to be manufactured on the carmaker’s dedicated modular platform E-GMP, was a hit as soon as its specs were disclosed last month.  In Korea, more than 35,000 reservations have been placed for the model. The 3,000 units earmarked for preorders in Europe sold out as soon as reservation opened. Hyundai Motor plans to sell 70,000 Ioniq 5s this year globally and 100,000 from next year."   https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2021/03/29/business/industry/ioniq5-egmp-hyundai-motor/20210329172800371.html   WITH ID.4, VOLKSWAGEN HAS ELECTRIC SUV THAT WHISPERS, NOT SHOUTS "The first electric SUV from VW will hit the market this spring with futuristic good looks, high-tech driving features, and 250 miles of battery range. While it will never be mistaken for a six-figure electric supercar, with its spacious, airy cabin and satisfactory performance, the ID.4 holds its own." asys Bloomberg: "The 1st Edition model I drove added unique badging, black mirror caps, and a tow hitch capable of pulling 2,200 pounds. It looks different enough on the road to make close observers take a second look—they can tell this is no Tiguan—but it blends in sufficiently to avert embarrassing commotions at the grocery store or while waiting in line to get vaccine.. I do think, by the way,  that consumers mulling the realties of owning an electric vehicle need some reassurance regarding range anxiety—still the biggest reason they won’t take the plunge.  The ID.4 does have nearly 250 miles of charge, even under aggressive highway driving, and it charges to 80% on a 125-kW DC fast charger in just 38 minutes."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-29/vw-id4-review-family-friendly-electric-suv-that-whispers-not-shouts.   UBER OFFERS GREEN OPTION FOR LONDON "Uber says it will let London customers request a fully electric car so they can "play their part in cleaning up urban transport". The ride-hailing app said its Uber Green option in central London will mean passenger fares will match those made in petrol, diesel and hybrid Uber vehicles, while drivers will be charged a reduced service fee." according to Sky News: "Journeys must begin within London's Zone 1 area but destinations are unrestricted. The company began adding a 15p per mile clean air fee in London in January 2019 to help drivers with the cost of switching to greener cars. This has raised £125m and the number of fully electric Uber cars in the capital has increased from 100 to 1,600. But this still leaves only a small percentage of the firm's 45,000 London vehicles that are eligible for the Uber Green scheme."   https://news.sky.com/story/uber-offers-green-option-for-london-customers-who-want-electric-cars-12259806   BP PULSE TO EXPAND ITS UK NETWORK WITH NEW ULTRA-FAST CHARGING HUBS bp pulse, formerly known as BP Chargemaster, plans to significantly expand its ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure across the UK, with a series of new charging hubs developed in partnership with The EV Network (EVN).   The UK-based EV charging company plans to double the number of EV charge points in its UK network to 16,000 by 2030, with a particular emphasis on ultra-fast chargers. The total amount of charging on the bp pulse network is set to grow 30-fold by 2030.   COULD THIS BE AN ELECTRIC BMW 2 SERIES TEST MULE? "We know that BMW is currently in development of many new electric vehicles but, after that, the details of what the brand is working on are a bit fuzzy. Originally, BMW claimed it was working on a modular architecture that was flexible for both internal combustion and electrification. However, now it’s apparently working on a bespoke EV architecture." says BMW Blog; "In these photos, you can see what is clearly a BMW 2 Series but one that’s a bit different from a standard car. For starters, it seems to be some sort of high-performance variant. It has louvers on its hood and massive carbon ceramic brakes. The car seems to have started off life as a BMW M2 but that doesn’t seem to be what it’s becoming. Out back, you can see that it lacks exhaust pipes altogether, instead having just a smooth piece of black plastic where the exhausts used to be"   https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/03/24/electric-2-series-test-mule/   FOILING FERRY TO BECOME THE WORLD'S FASTEST ELECTRIC PASSENGER SHIP "Swedish boat-builder Candela is looking to make some waves in the local water transportation scene with a fancy new foiling ferry it claims will be world-beating in a number of ways. The P-30 is designed to become the fastest all-electric passenger ship ever made, all while cleaning up the waterways and surrounding air by eventually displacing the diesel ferries currently servicing the city of Stockholm." says New Atlas: "The P-30 will measure 40 ft (12 m) long, have enough space for 30 passengers and will be powered by a pair of 60 kW electric pod drives. These will propel the vessel to a top speed of 30 knots and a service speed of 20-25 knots, while the onboard 180-kWh lithium battery will offer a range of more than 60 nautical miles."   https://newatlas.com/marine/foiling-ferry-p-130-candela-worlds-fastest-electric/   MINISTERS FACE CALLS TO BUILD BATTERY ‘GIGAFACTORIES’ "Ministers must give the green light to several more “gigafactories” making batteries for electric cars or risk losing out on thousands of jobs,  Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Ed Miliband will say in a speech on Thursday." says iNews: "Work has begun on a single gigafactory in Northumberland. Experts believe many more will be needed to fuel a mass switchover to electric cars, vans and buses without increasing the West’s dependence on imported batteries from countries such as China."   https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/ministers-face-calls-to-build-battery-gigafactories-across-uk-to-power-new-generation-of-electric-cars-928646   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What incentive would make the most difference to you buying an EV?   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PREMIUM PARTNER)     DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Craig McClellan of The McClellan Law Firm ( https://www.mcclellanlaw.com/  )   Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review     Case Details:   Three-time Outstanding Trial Lawyer Award recipient Craig McClellan reveals how he held a manufacturer liable for making a vehicle that is “too dangerous for the average consumer without warnings and instruction.” Air Force veteran Donald Fresh was killed after his coworker failed to maintain control of her Porsche Turbo 930, which was designed to operate more like a race car and did not respond well to deceleration or braking while executing a turn. The brake bent under the force of her foot due to a laceration defect, causing the brake pedal to clamp down on the accelerator. A San Diego jury returned a verdict of $2,500,000 and assigned 100% of the blame for Donald's death on Porsche for not posting warnings about the car's foreseeable risk of hazard to users and negligence in addressing the car's defective brakes and handling.     Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents     Guest Bio:   Craig McClellan     Craig McClellan has obtained more than 130 verdicts and settlements in excess of one million dollars, and is a three-time recipient of the "Outstanding Trial Lawyer Award" from the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego for cases in which million and multi-million dollar verdicts were obtained. Key Talking Points Outstanding does not equate to being an ‘A’ tech. An A Tech, B Tech or C Tech can all be outstanding. To be excellent and outstanding technicians need balance in their life. Be grounded with personal time. They lead in the shop and help develop the culture of growth, a learning environment and take on work others may not want, but also how to take a certain path to a solution. Will help younger technicians grow in their career. They will show and share their knowledge. Outstanding technicians want to work at outstanding shops. Passion is required. A burn or fire in your belly to show up every day to do your best. Being self-critical. Pride in your work to be able to fix a problem no one else can. Having pride in your workmanship. Prideful techs will verify their solution. Pride requires humility. Growth in maturity is a large factor in these outstanding qualities. Precision in work quality is an important quality to strive for. Being accurate and right. A great fix and a greasy floor or fingerprints on the vehicle will not bring the customer back. This allows the entire team to understand the value of training. It doesn’t end at 5 PM. There is an additional investment and the shop owner must invest. Owners must lead the way by attending business management/CEO training. If owners ask their technicians/diagnosticians to stay current so should the CEO. Lead by example. Technicians must be involved in their training. Shared costs can be in order as you start to build your learning culture. If they show that they are getting value and using their new education the owner can take more costs off the technician as they show that they are willing to invest in their necessary education. Training helps build a total career professional. Understand the personal motivation of your technicians and
