There's a new Lord of the Rings film, it's anime, I really enjoyed it. Australia's own Miranda Otto returns as Eowyn to narrate this Middle Earth adventure and we had a conversation I hope you enjoy as much as I did. Miranda is part of a creative family I adore, dad Barry Otto an Australian icon and in particular actor, writer, director Gracie Otto. Besides LOTR, I've enjoyed Miranda in;Talk to Me (2022) Cashmere Mafia (2008) Dead Letter Office (1998) The Portable Door (2023) Doin' Time for Patsy Cline (1997)
In this episode I'm joined by The Demon Disorder director, writer, producer and special effects artist, Steve Boyle. The Demon Disorder follows brothers Jake (played by Dirk Hunter) and Graham (played by Christian Willis). When their youngest brother is believed to be demonically possessed, the estranged brothers reunite to confront a dreadful family secret. Charles Cottier, John Noble and Tobie Webster co-star. In my opinion, The Demon Disorder features some of the best practical effects you'll see in a modern horror film. Working with some of the biggest names in film and television, Steve Boyle has built a reputation for world-class standards in Special FX Production within the industry. With over 30 years experience in Special FX, Steve's credits as a designer include; Fear Below, The Portable Door, Love and Monsters, Daybreakers, BAIT 3D, Mental, Predestination and Jungle to name a few. In this interview, Steve gives us a great insight into the making of The Demon Disorder while sharing stories from his long career in the industry including his friendship and creative partnership with Michael and Peter Spierig, his time working on Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, and his upcoming work on Kiah Roache Turner's highly anticipated shark horror, Beast of War. Anyway… Enjoy.

At long last, a movie that seeks to answer the age-old question, “what if doors were towels?” Listen in with Leigh, Brendan, and Chris as we go down under to knock on 2023's comic fantasy The Portable Door, an Australian adaptation of the first book in a long-running British series about what if magicians used their magical powers for mundane purposes / profit (we guess???). On the bright side, it offers Christoph Waltz and Sam Neill going full ham and cheese as two corporate wizards. On the dark side, boy do we have some story and tone issues to dig into here (along with some very frustrating goblin prosthetics from The Jim Henson Company). On the drink side, we have an effervescent spring-inspired cocktail to make everything better! How many more sides could you want??? Continue reading →

It's an all-British affair on the Empire Podcast this week, as we finally get a chance to bring you the interview Chris Hewitt did with Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre director/star combo, Guy Ritchie and The 'Jason Statham' Stath over a year ago, before the film's release was delayed. Now it's out on Prime Video, here's the perfect chance to hear the duo talk about working together over the years, and Ritchie's unique approach to choreographing action sequences. Then, in an interview that hasn't been locked away in a vault for over a year, Chris sits down with Nicholas Hoult, returning to the pod after a four year break (damn you, Covid!) to talk about playing the title role in Renfield, fizzy water, his approach to choosing roles, and whether or not he has a Draclier in him. Ooer missus and no mistake. Then, in an epic pod either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, Ben Travis, and James Dyer to talk about (some of) the greatest arrest scenes in movies (yes, we know we haven't been exhaustive. Yes, we know The Usual Suspects is missing, for one), review Renfield, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, One Fine Morning and The Portable Door and, in an expanded news section, talk at length about Star Wars Celebration and all the news that emerged from that, the just-announced Harry Potter TV show, the new Indiana Jones trailer, some MCU casting news and much, much more. So line up a cool refreshing glass of the Devil's Pee and have at it. Enjoy!

We also take a peek inside The Portable Door from MGM+ with a spoiler free review. There were a TON of trailers to drop this week so we'll dive into titles like Blue Beetle, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Barbie, The Diplomat and The Lazarus Project. The Portable Door is a fantasy thriller about a young man who joins a very strange office. It stars Sam Neill, Christoph Waltz and Rachel House.
Simon Morris asks why the film reviewer of the New York Times has quit after 23 years, and compares the movies of today with those of 1999. He also looks at two would-be franchises, and a film that's released, as are so many today, on a streaming service - in this case Prime Video. The Forgiven is set at a party in Morocco, thrown by more idle rich. Starring Ralph Fiennes (The English patient), Jessica Chastain (The eyes of Tammy Faye) and Matt Smith (Dr Who), it's directed by John Michael McDonagh (The Guard).
