Writer, Director, Stuntman. Nobody’s doing it like Nash Edgerton. He kicked of his feature directing career with the dark Aussie noir THE SQUARE (a film Alexei actually jigged school to go see in cinemas) and he also directed all 3 seasons of what might very well be the very best Australian television series MR INBETWEEN. Tune in as Joe Lipsett (Horror Queers, Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr) collaborates with Arthur for a breakdown of The Gift, the 2015 stalker thriller that takes an interestingly slow-burn and grounded approach to its own subgenre. The topics that get coverage include the movie's knack for subtle foreshadowing, the fleshed-out performances from the leading trio (including Rebecca Hall, who deserves so much more love from us as a society), and the pitfalls of politeness. Written and directed by Joel Edgerton, The Gift stars Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, Joel Edgerton, Allison Tolman, Tim Griffin, Busy Philipps, David Denman, Nash Edgerton, Katie Aselton, and P.J. In this highly-requested feature-length episode, dear friends and past guests Jed Ayres, Rob Belushi, and Blake Howard join me to explore the critically acclaimed, award-winning FX Australia series Mr. Inbetween, which ran for three seasons from 2018-2021. Created and written by the show's charismatic lead Scott Ryan, the show finds the actor starring as muscle, debt-collector, hitman, and Underworld-Jack-of-All-Trades for-Hire Ray Shoesmith, whom Ryan's fans will recall was the same character he portrayed in his 2005 Australian independent feature film The Magician.Beginning like a traditional episode of Watch With Jen where we serve up a roughly forty-minute analytical overview and appreciation of the growing word-of-mouth cult favorite series, from there we move into an extended conversation the four of us were fortunate enough to recently have with the funny, disarming, and kind Scott Ryan.Covering everything from how much he hates "raw" sandwiches to his love of writing believable dialogue that isn't solely dependent on moving the plot forward, Ryan discusses the pros and cons of TV vs. film, celebrates his gifted co-stars, along with series director Nash Edgerton, and lets us in on what he's hoping to do next. A spoiler-filled installment that's best appreciated after you've seen Mr. Inbetween, we hope you'll enjoy it, and recommend both Ryan's series and this podcast to others to help spread the word.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveLogo: KateGabrielle.comOriginally Posted on Patreon (2/27/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/72500093
Nash Edgerton has worked as a stuntman on films including The Matrix trilogy, The Thin Red Line and as doubling for Ewan McGregor in two of the Star Wars prequels. He directed all episodes of black comedy-drama Mr InBetween and two feature films: 2008's The Square and Gringo in 2018, which starred Charlize Theron, David Oyelowo and his younger brother Joel Edgerton. He's made music videos for Bob Dylan, Brandon Flowers and Empire of the Sun. His latest work, Shark, will be part of the Show Me Shorts Festival which kicks off next week around the country in cinemas and online. It's part of a trilogy, along with Spider and Bear....and could be described as extremely black comedy.

Career Q&A with Joel Edgerton. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Joel Edgerton currently stars as John Connolly in BLACK MASS alongside Johnny Depp. He was honored for his performance as Tom Buchanan in “The Great Gatsby,” Baz Luhrmann's 2013 screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel. Edgerton won Australian Film Institute (AFI) and Film Critics Circle of Australia (FCCA) Awards and was nominated for an Australian Film Critics Association Award, all in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Edgerton more recently directed, wrote, produced and starred in the psychological thriller “The Gift,” also starring Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall. The independent film delivered tremendously, with a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score and an opening weekend of $12 million. He also starred opposite Christian Bale in Ridley Scott's biblical epic “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” Edgerton's upcoming credits include starring roles in Jeff Nichols' sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” and Gavin O'Connor's Western “Jane Got a Gun,” with Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor. He is currently reunited with Nichols on the fact-based drama “Loving,” about the couple whose challenge to Virginia's interracial marriage ban led to a landmark Supreme Court case. In 2012, Edgerton gained international attention with his role in Kathryn Bigelow's award winning true-life drama “Zero Dark Thirty.” That same year, he starred opposite Jennifer Garner in Peter Hedges' “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” and in “Wish You Were Here,” winning an FCCA Award for Best Actor. His other recent film credits include the drama “Felony,” which he also wrote and produced and which premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival; Gavin O'Connor's drama “Warrior,” with Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte; the horror thriller “The Thing,” the prequel to John Carpenter's cult classic; and David Michôd's “Animal Kingdom,” for which he won AFI and FCCA Awards for Best Supporting Actor. Edgerton had earlier starred in such films as “The Square,” directed by his brother Nash Edgerton; the Australian feature “Acolytes”; “Whisper,” with Josh Holloway”; the crime thriller “Smokin' Aces”; the drag comedy “Kinky Boots”; and George Lucas's blockbusters “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” and “Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” playing the young Owen Lars, who would become Uncle Owen to Luke Skywalker. He also lent his voice to Zack Snyder's animated feature “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole” and the Oscar nominated animated short “The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello,” performing the title role. Born in New South Wales, Australia, Edgerton attended the Nepean Drama School in western Sydney. He went on to appear in various stage productions, most notably with the Sydney Theatre Company in “Blackrock,” “Third World Blues” and “Love for Love”; and the Bell Shakespeare, where he appeared in “Henry IV.” In 2009, he returned to the stage to star as Stanley Kowalski, alongside Cate Blanchett's Blanche DuBois, in the Sydney Theatre Company's acclaimed production of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The pair also performed the play to sold-out audiences at the Kennedy Center in November of that year, followed by a run at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in December. On Australian television, he is known for playing the role of Will in the long-running series “The Secret Life of Us,” for which he was nominated for an AFI Award.

Please consider donating to research for a cure to this fatal disease. https://fightmnd.org.au/donate/ is a GLOBAL body dedicated to finding a cure for MND aka ALS aka Lou Gehrig's disease. The word 'rare' comes to mind here. You can put all of the following in that categor;. Scott Ryan, Nash Edgerton, Mr Inbetween Ray Shoesmith ... and it is impossible not to also include actor Nic Cassim's performance as Ray's brother Bruce who in the series is afflicted with Motor Neurone Disease. This same disease is know some places in the world as 'ALS' and in the US particularly as 'Lou Gehrig's Disease. We dive into Nic's incredible performance, his process and the time he played a clown in kids hospitals .. no for real ! And we of course discuss all things Mr Inbetween Finally although Nic's performance is fiction, sadly this horrible disease is not. Average life expectancy from diagnosis is barely 2 years. It is 100% fatal and there are ZERO medication or treatments to prolong life. PLEASE consider donating to https://fightmnd.org.au/donate/ which was founded by Aussie Rules legend Neale Daniher, himself a sufferer of MND. Scott Ryan confirmed to me that Neale was the inspiration to write Bruces character with MND. We are sure you will enjoy this interview ... and coming right up are Damon Herriman (Freddy) and Mr Inbetween himself ... creator, writer, actor, Scott Ryan.
As one of the principal filmmakers behind the collective Blue-Tongue Films, Nash Edgerton is one of the great heroes of modern Australian film & tv so of course, we had to get him in for the Australian Psycho miniseries. Todays episode is a BONUS mid week special to coincide with the launch of Mr Inbetween series 3. Which premieres on May 26th at 8:30 on Foxtel. The final series of one Australia's most original characters - Ray Shoesmith. He is a hit man but the twist really lies in the characters likability. I saw the characters first incarnation as a short film called The Magician at the St Kilda Film Festival in 2004. Which was nearly 20 years ago. The story resonated with Nash Edgerton who is one of Australia's best storytellers. Nash believed in this story from the ground floor and since then - we have seen a feature film and then this widely successful current FX series which is in its third - but sadly final series. The show is quite violent but the heart and soul in this story is like nothing you have ever seen before. I have Scott Ryan, writer, creator and star of the Mr Inbetween. We discuss the origins of Mr In-between, violence in cinema, why the show is coming to an end and he reveals if he is sad about the final chapter of this iconic character. I absolutely loved this chat and I hope you do too.

Edu has shot movies and commercials around the world with very unique directors, developing a beautiful eye, an honest smile and a very personal style. Born in Barcelona in 1981, Edu Grau studied filmmaking in ESCAC (Spain) and the NFTS (UK) specializing early as a Director of Photography. At 23, when he was not ready for that, and after the Sundance winning short "LA RUTA NATURAL", Edu shot his first feature, Albert Serra's "HONOR DE CAVALLERIA", which premiered at Cannes'06 and 40 other festivals. Then he paired up with Tom Ford for his debut feature in Hollywood, "A SINGLE MAN", that was acclaimed as one of the most cinematically beautiful films of 2009 and got Colin Firth a Bafta and an Oscar Nom. Vice magazine included it in the ¨30 most beautiful movies of all time¨. In 2009, Edu filmed "BURIED" with Rodrigo Cortés, and starring Ryan Reynolds. The film won Edu the Bronze Frog for Best Cinematography at Camerimage'10 and a Goya nomination. "FINISTERRAE" won the main award in Rotterdam'11, while his return to the Uk was with Nick Murphy's "THE AWAKENING", with Rebecca Hall and Dominic West. Shortly after came a special movie by his talented old friend Marçal Forés,"ANIMALS", pretty much in the vein of the shorts that they used to do together. Edu was then given the opportunity to work with Lady Gaga at the peak of her career, "BORN THIS WAY" was the result. In 2012, Edu premiered in Toronto Dante Ariola's "ARTHUR NEWMAN" with Emily Blunt and Colin Firth. "A SINGLE SHOT" with Sam Rockwell and Bill H Macy was just before "SUITE FRANÇAISE" by Saul Dibb, with Michelle WiIliams, Kristin Scott Thomas, Mathias Schoenaerts and Sam Riley. "SUFFRAGETTE", directed by Sarah Gavron and with Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep was Edu's next step modernizing a period film. "THE GIFT" by Joel Edgerton and starring Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall was one of the surprise film of 2015. "TRESPASS AGAINST US" by Adam Smith featuring Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson was a gypsie chase movie. His new 25M budget movie, "GRINGO" by Nash Edgerton with Charlize Theron, David Oyelowo and Joel Edgerton is a dark action comedy. In 2017, he shot "QUIÉN TE CANTARÁ" directed by the cult auteur Carlos Vermut. He was nominated for a Goya, a Gaudí and a CEC for Best Cinematography. Later on, Edu reteamed with the one and only Joel Edgerton to do "BOY ERASED" with Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Xavier Dolan and Flea. The movie got two Golden Globes nominations. Edu recently shot Gavin O'Connor's latest movie at Warner Bros "THE WAY BACK" starring Ben Affleck. The movie will be released March 6th 2020. After an amazing run with some top commercial directors, Edu has just wrapped Rebecca Hall's debut feature "PASSING", with Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negra, Andre Holland, Alex Skarsgard and Bill Camp. It is Edu's first film in glorious B&W and 4:3. The movie will be released in the festival and awards season of 2020. Meet Edu Grau.

Now, finally, Ryan is back, and so is Ray, with Mr Inbetween, a six-part comedy-drama that has won a lot of fans, earned a swag of AACTA award nominations, and has just been given the greenlight for a second season by American cable network FX.
