GORUCK co-founder and CEO Jason McCarthy says his path from leaving the Special Forces to building a $100 million company is a “cautionary tale”.  He even wrote a book titled “How Not to Start a Backpack Company.” Jason served with the Green Berets and his wife Emily was a CIA Case Officer deployed to West Africa. Jason put together a “go-ruck” for Emily to carry in her vehicle and home.  This planted the seeds for GORUCK, but it was a long journey fraught with many ups and downs. “You go from having a super high speed job to doing nothing that is cool anymore. Reconciling that can be a difficult thing to do.” Jason's marriage was falling apart and he found himself sleeping on a friend's couch.  His Green Beret training taught him that doing something is better than doing nothing. So Jason loaded some of his backpacks and drove the contiguous 48 states with his dog Java, pitching his product to potential retailers. No one bought any. A transformational moment for GORUCK came when Jason and a team joined a rucking competition to “field test” their gear & take some photos.  He saw how many people were enjoying the activity. GORUCK would expand from a gear company to a people first company. They have now hosted over 7,000 rucking events with 150,000 participants all across the country. They range from simple team events to the brutal GORUCK Selection Course featured in the documentary “The Standard”. GORUCK also supports various Veteran & First Responder charities including The Green Beret Foundation. P.S – The story has a happy ending. Jason and Emily are back together and their "back of a napkin" idea is hugely successful. TAKEAWAY: “Failure is central to the human experience. I failed so many times in the Q-Course and in the early days of GORUCK. It's all about what you do when you fail.”

America's Memory

The United States Army keeps the selection process for Delta Force a highly-guarded secret. Former Delta operator Pat Savidge has said that “It's not always the best guy that makes it. It's the right guy. That’s the key." Most all special operation units have minimum standards for an invite to a selection course. Once there, applicants are tested daily, and many quit as the training tempo increases. Tons of video from the Navy SEALSs BUD/S crucible exists but few are aware of the multi-course process to become an Air Force Combat Controller. Those trainees know the standard. However, Delta Force selection see many pass the course but don’t select them. Some have Adonis-like bodies and a Harvard intellect. Yet, they don’t make it. William “Chief” Carlson checked off all the qualities one would think are necessary in a Delta operator. He passed the course. Yet, Delta didn’t select him the first time. By his second go-round, they deemed him “the right guy.” Carlson grew up in the northern California area to a family steeped in Native American history with an older brother and older sister. As members of the Blackfeet, his father and grandmother taught him the Plains Algonquian language. His mischievous nature never worried his mother since he stayed out of major trouble, but his father, a former marine, made life difficult for him. A tough father and tough neighborhood gave him the grit he’d need later in life. He excelled at art and spent hours drawing but also found time for sports and enjoyed football the most. Although he didn’t have the best grades, he managed to make his way through. Over time he developed a love for reading, in particular, biographies and military history. He considered college and visited the University of California at San Diego in 1979 but surprised his mother that he had joined the army infantry. He became Airborne qualified, earned a Ranger tab, and served with the 75th Ranger Regiment. Carlson left the army after four years but reenlisted in 1985. Before long, he entered the Q-Course for the U.S. Army Special Forces and earn the right to wear the Green Beret. He not only passed but also achieved one of the toughest accomplishments in the army by becoming Combat Diver qualified where many struggle with the physics and physiology in the classroom. Nothing seemed to dissuade the tough Blackfeet soldier. The list of friends he made along the way remains long and distinguished by others that sewed a Ranger tab on their sleeve or wore a Green Beret. They all called him “Chief,” aside from the military discipline that required those under him to call him Staff Sergeant Carlson, for example. Others might have tried to call him “Carlson,” or “William,” or “Bill,” be he always corrected them. “No, just Chief,” he’d say. The proud man never shied away from his heritage. Many might mistake him for another race or another American Native Tribe, but he was Blackfeet, period. Listen to this podcast now for the rest...

When Tom McCollum transitioned from the 82nd Airborne to Special Forces, he knew the training would be tough. The Special Forces Qualification Course, or Q Course, can take up to two years to complete, depending on a soldier's area of expertise. As a former company commander with ample leadership experience, McCollum was ready for the challenge. Still, he found himself struggling to adapt to a new role. "All of a sudden, I found myself in SERE school, where I was the senior ranking officer, but no matter what I said, no matter what I did, was wrong," said McCollum. SERE school, focusing on survival, evasion, resistance and escape, teaches soldiers what to expect if they become prisoners of war. Students must try to keep their wits during grueling mock interrogations designed to test their resolve. "I had gone from a position where people looked to me for guidance, where I was taking care of them, to people looking at me hoping I wouldn't say anything, said McCollum. "It was a complete shock and reversal from everything I was used to. I remember I had a hard time dealing with that." The experience forced him to see himself in a new light. McCollum said it was the biggest mental challenge he faced in his Army career. "I think that was a good thing. At the time I wouldn't have said that was a good thing, but it's one of those lessons that you learn that dawns on you years later."

Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview Jason McCarthy, Founder and CEO of GORUCK, a company that makes rucksacks (also known as backpacks), and runs rucking events similar to the Special Forces selection process. Jason reveals why and how he started GORUCK, the obstacles he faced along the way, his mission for GORUCK, and his success in building leaders by overcoming adversity as a team. Jason also talks about building better Americans who serve their country and community, explaining the basis of community. He reminds us what freedom means, and how others can fulfill a duty in a variety of ways. Listen in to learn how you can turn adversity into team building within your organization.   Key Takeaways [7:38] How the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC) or the Q Course forces you to lead. [8:32] There are always opportunities to lead, you have to seize them. There’s always room for another great leader to step up. [13:24] It wasn’t about the weight people were carrying, it was about the people carrying the weight. [13:41] What’s really rewarding, is the impact you can make on people if you serve them. [14:34] GORUCK became this bridge for Jason, that he was building for people that showed up within the class, and yet he needed to be on that same bridge, as well. [18:29] Successful teams have got to be fun and it’s got to be about building communities. [21:57] Americans represent one united community. Bake your neighbor a pie sometime, talk to the person next to you on the plane. We need someone to push us toward more service to each other - to build a better America. [25:41] To create a culture of leaders you have to trust the people around you, give them things they can do, and let them figure it out. [33:33] Go find a friend, go for a walk, put a backpack on, and talk to the person next to you. Connect with the people that are around you.   Quotable Quotes “To lead is to do. You have to actually do it. You can’t learn about it in a book.” "To lead is to serve." “People need to like you to spend time with you.” "Communication is always the glue." “Taking a walk with a ruck is officially called rucking.”   Books Mentioned or Referenced on the Show The LITTLEST Green Beret: On Self-Reliant Leadership, book by Jan Rutherford   Bio Jason McCarthy Graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in May 2001, without a set professional goal. Then came 9/11, which became a call-to-arms to him. Jason enlisted in Special Forces and served in Iraq as a Communication Sergeant in the Green Berets. He calls his experience there a leadership laboratory. Jason founded GORUCK in 2008 after his military service, seeing the need for a great civilian bag, and a way to help veterans bridge military and civilian life. This led to the GORUCK Challenge, where a Special Forces guy builds a team out of the participants who show up.
