The year of the tiger can also be marked as the year of 'Saturn Returns'. Although Saturn is commonly associated with Capricorn, the goat, providing us with the horns of the devil and the black companion of Satan, as well as the Black Sun. He sometimes is depicted riding a donkey, which astrologically is Sagittarius, therefore linking Saturn to the two-faced gods like Janus who is most famous for the month of January. Since Saturn has been identified as Cronus, we know that he is the god of time as well as agriculture. The changing of the seasons was very important to earlier Man and relates directly to the turning of the yearly wheel. But there are larger cycles inside of even larger cycles. Saturn was supported in his authority by the Titans, who were said to hold up the earth from within after being imprisoned by Jupiter. The Titans are also said to exist in natural disasters that cleanse the earth. Throughout popular culture and history, both contemporary and esoteric, men have worked to encourage the return of Saturn and these Titans to purify the earth. We know that Omicron can be translated to the 'little o' (omi) or 'beginning' in relation to 'time' (cron or cronus). Now, Ihu brings us the meaning of 'god rescues' and is defined as a 'variant of Jesus', the divine adversary, and the return of chaos, the titans, Saturn, the ancient gods, Lovecraftian Great Old Ones, etc. Ihu is also similar to EA, or the Sumerian Enki who brought the flood. Enki was furthermore the son of Tiamat, the Celestial being bursting from the Earth in the Eternals.

On this week's episode, to celebrate the early access release of a Greek mythology inspired roguelite sequel that one host is hooked on, we are taking another look at a wonderful artifact from the 2000s pop culture Greek mythology craze - Class of the Titans. While debating whether or not we've entered into another phase of this phenomenon, we breakdown a classic episode involving bait-and-switch plot twists, the personification of death, will they won't they romance, and Mt. Olympus cuckoldry. If you haven't beaten Hades II yet and really want to give Cronus his just desserts, then boy do we have the episode for you. Dcn. Harrison Garlick and Adam Minihan discuss Book 22 on the Death of Hector. “There are no binding oaths between men and lions—wolves and lambs can enjoy no meeting of the minds—they are all bent on hating each other to death.” Achilles (22.310). 97. What happens in book twenty-two? The Trojans scurry back into the city like “panicked fawns,” while Hector remains outside the walls (22.05). Apollo, who had taken the form of a Trojan soldier to make Achilles chase him, reveals his trickery to Achilles (22.09)—and Achilles turns back to the city (22.26). Despite the pleas of Priam (22.31) and Hecuba (22.93), Hector remains outside the walls “nursing his quenchless fury” (22.115). As Achilles approaches, Hector's courage fails, and he begins to run around the walls of Troy with Achilles in pursuit (22.163). Zeus' “heart grieves for Hector,” (22.202), but he gives permission to Athena to do as she wills (22.220). Hector tries to enter the city, but Achilles thwarts him (22.234). Achilles also holds back the Achaean army, now observing the chase, from intervening (22.245). Zeus once again holds out his golden scales, and fate elects that it is time for Hector to die (22.249).Athena takes on the form of Deiphobus, brother of Hector, and convinces Hector to stand together and fight Achilles (22.271). Hector faces Achilles and tries to make a pact that the victor will not mutilate the corpse of the fallen but give it to his people for burial (22.301). Achilles rejects this offer, stating: “There are no binding oaths between men and lions—wolves and lambs can enjoy no meeting of the minds—they are all bent on hating each other to death” (22.310). Hector and Achilles clash in combat, and Hector calls to his brother, Deiphobus, for help—but there is no answer (22.347). Hector realizes the gods have tricked him and that his time has come (22.350). He elects to die in glory, and he charges Achilles (22.359). Achilles strikes down Hector and tells him: “The dogs and birds will maul you” (22.395). Hector pleads to be given to his people, but Achilles rejects him saying: “My fury would drive me now to hack your flesh away and eat you raw” (22.408). Hector prophesies that “Paris and Lord Apollo” will strike down Achilles outside of Troy (22.423). Hector dies (22.425). The Achaeans all stab his body (22.437), and Achilles drags it behind his chariot (22.466). Priam and Hecuba cry out for their son (22.478), and Andromache “bursts out in grief” (22.560). The book ends with Andromache lamenting the impending fate of her son, Astyanax, the little “Lord of the City” (22.569). 98. What structure does piety give the death of Hector?Previously, Hector's return to Troy provided an insight into the ancient threefold notion of piety: gratitude toward the gods, the city, and the family. It is a gratitude that precipitates a sense of duty. The threefold notion of piety—which is in a hierarchal order—appears to provide a certain infrastructure (and tension) to the narrative around Hector's death. For example, Hector disregards the appeals of his parents, Priam (22.32) and Hecuba (22.93), to retreat to the walls of Troy presumably due to his duty to defend Troy (22.129). Hector's piety toward the gods is praised by Zeus in the same conversation in which the son of Cronus orchestrates his death (22.129). It is notable the deception of Hector comes through his comradery toward another soldier of Troy and a familial relation, his brother (22.270). It further raises the question that for all Hector's piety toward Troy, no one seems interested in helping him. Hector, who is...
There was a time when religion was cool. Like when jacked dudes threw lightning and women wielded armor and spears in the heavens and under the waves. When the sun traveled across the sky being pulled by a golden chariot. When people believed in the Gods of Olympus. Greek Mythology has it all, Deities, Drama, Scandal, Affairs, like a lot of affairs, mostly by one guy, and he just so happens to be the main guy Zeus. But before he was trying to nail all of Greece he was the child of the Titan Cronos, who ate all his kids. Then there's the story of Cronus himself. The legends and stories of Greek Mythology may sounds familiar because they've been borrowed from and adapted throughout history innumerable times, but like all things there is an origin story. Tune in here to see how it all got started. Disclaimer: Zeus sexually assaults a lot of people, we discuss it, kind of a big part of his narrative, just letting you all know.

Deacon Harrison Garlick and Adam Minihan discuss Book 4 of the Iliad - The Truce Erupts in WarBook FourThe Truce Erupts in WarThe Iliad is a poem that lives and moves and has its being in war. Bernard Knox26. What happens in the fourth book of the Iliad?Zeus taunts Hera with possibly supporting the truce and ending the war (4.17). Amongst the bickering, Zeus reveals that he esteems Troy (Ilium) more than any other city, and its destruction is given to Hera by Zeus of his own free will (4.50-58). Moreover, Zeus' jest of supporting the truce seems a bit of theatre given his promise to Thetis. Nonetheless, he sends Athena to do two things: first, ensure the Trojans break the truce; and second, that the Trojans “trample the Argives in their triumph” (4.83-84). Athena successfully tempts the Trojan archer Pandarus—who seems unable to perceive the goddess for who she is—into shooting Menelaus (4.145). Athena deflects the arrow into a non-mortal wound, and Agamemnon calls for the healer, Machaon, son of Asclepius, the god of medicine (4.223). With the truce broken by the Trojans with no observable attempt from Hector or anyone else to diffuse the situation, Agamemnon marshals his chieftains for war (4.257). The armies clash and various conflicts are recorded (4.517). The book ends with Apollo encouraging the Trojans, and Athena the Greeks (4.585, 596)—while the edict of Zeus for the Trojans to triumph, at least temporally, remains pending.27. Is the Iliad an accurate depiction of fighting in the Bronze Age?“The Iliad is a poem that lives and moves and has its being in war,” as Knox observes. The material of war is bronze. Iron, a rarity, makes an appearance as a precious gift later in the poem. Book four introduces the actual warfare, and we may observe that it presents as more individualistic than expected. It is less group tactics and strategies and more individual feats of skill and bravado. Moreover, rarely are the soldiers generic. The opponents are named and, later in the poem, entire backgrounds will be orated prior to the toss of a spear. In fact, at times, it will seem as if the entire war stops while opponents share genealogies and family histories before slaying one another. One may recall that Homer's audience is an aristocratic class of Greeks whose ancestors fought in the Trojan war. It is in their interest to hear of the bravery (or cowardice) of their forefathers and their individual exploits. One could also compare these duels to another bronze age duel: David and Goliath. In addition to the duels, Homer will make it clear later in the work that the armies utilized a phalanx—“a disciplined line of overlapping shields” while striking out with spears. Another unique attribute of the warfare is the grasping for loot. The soldiers kill their opponents and then attempt to take the corpse and strip it of its armor and goods. Homer will develop the rationale behind this act, but, in short, to capture your opponent's gear added to your glory (kleos).28. Who is Cronus? As Cronus (i.e., Cronos or Kronos) is referenced several times in book four. Who is he?Homer and the Ancient Greek poets tell us that in the beginning there was the world, Gaia, and the heavens, Uranus. The earth and the heavens came together and gave birth to the great and powerful Titans—and the chief titan, Cronos, waged war against his own father and killed him and ascended in power and ruled over the world. In turn, Cronos had children—the Olympian...

Zeus, the chief deity in Greek mythology, is the Olympian god of sky and thunder, and is king of all other gods and men.His tale is one of overthrowing fathers, eating babies and seducing women, both mortal and divine, by changing his own form. He's one of the most complex figures in history, and his story is one that's been retold throughout millennia. To try and make sense of it all, we're going back to very beginning, to the origins of Zeus, starting with his grandfather and grandmother, Uranus and Gaia. We learn about the prophecy that ultimately overthrows Uranus, the same one that is also fated for Zeus's father, Cronus, and start to understand the family-tree that becomes the Olympians - from Athena to Dionysus. For this episode, Tristan Hughes is joined by academic, author, broadcaster and Professor in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick, Michael Scott. The Moon slides past the planet Saturn the next couple of nights. Saturn is to the upper left of the Moon as darkness falls tonight. It'll be closer to the right of the Moon tomorrow night. The planet looks like a bright star. Saturn is named for a Roman god. In ancient Greece, he was known as Cronus. He was the leader of the Titans, who came before the gods of Olympus. Saturn is passing through Aquarius. The constellation is home to many stars that host their own planets. And like Saturn, many of those worlds have more than one name. All of the planets bear the names of their stars followed by a letter of the alphabet, starting with “b.” The letters indicate the order of a planet's discovery around its star. Over the past few years, the International Astronomical Union has been assigning formal names to exoplanets. The latest batch was announced this year. It includes two planets in Aquarius. The names were submitted as part of a competition. They come from many cultures and eras. The planet HATS-72b was named Zembretta, after a tiny island off the coast of Tunisia. And WASP-69b was named Makombe, after a stream that feeds a major river in Cameroon. Both planets are giants — the size of Saturn or bigger. And they're quite close to their parent stars, so they're quite hot. There's no guarantee that astronomers will actually use the new names. But they offer a new way to think about some far-off worlds. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory
We have a Starfield Discord Thing! Some even call it a forum... Cities: Skylines II has a great game loop. You build a village, run out of money, lose the game and then start again. At least that's how Kyle has been playing it. All the while Lee is firmly stuck in Diablo IV. He has been running around in Season 2 and having a blast by the sounds of it. Microsoft is banning unofficial Xbox accessories, but it doesn't go far enough according to Kyle. Some Xbox accessories are going to give you an error code if you try use them, yet the known cheating accessories - Cronus and Xim - are still left to function. How infuritating. And it's not like they couldn't stop it either... Xbox is injecting AI into its game studios. Are at least will be partnering with InWorld - the makers of tool that allows generative AI to build NPC's and quest lines. What does this mean for future games? Recently in The Guardian, Emma Beddington covered a new twist on an old practice. According to the 2022 U.K. census, writes Beddington, “74,000 people declared they were pagan, an increase of 17,000 since 2011.” Meanwhile in the U.S., “a 2014 survey by the Pew Research Center estimated at least 0.3% of people... identified as pagan or Wiccan, which translates to about one million people.” And, though it's not clear how anyone could know this, “That number is expected to triple by 2050.” Those numbers, while a small minority of the population, are significant when set against the overall decline of Christianity in the West. According to British historian Dr. Ronald Hutton, today's version of paganism is “a religion in which deities don't make rules for humans or monitor their behaviour—humans are encouraged to develop their full potential.” This comes with a heavy emphasis on being Earth-conscious, with rituals and festivals focused on connecting with nature. In this way, suggests Hutton, paganism is filling “a need for a spiritualised natural world in a time of ecological crisis.” Beddington describes the new paganism as a “tolerant, open, life-affirming, female-friendly faith.” It does seem to check all the right contemporary Western boxes: a feeling of transcendence without many hard commitments, a rejection of traditional morality while keeping a vague inclusivity, and enough concern for the natural world to qualify as a social justice cause. Or, as a group based out of the University of Massachusetts Amherst summarized: “Pagans view the world as a place of joy and life, not of sin and suffering. We believe that the divine is here with us in the natural world, not in some faraway place in the sky.” At the same time, the new paganism is a world away from ancient paganism. Though often a catch-all term for a wide variety of pre-Christian beliefs, paganism suffers from a shortage of written records. However, what we do know would not be best described as a universe born out of “joy and life, not of sin and suffering.” In Hesiod's Theogony, the Greek version of the origin of the cosmos and the gods, the birth of each divine generation is preceded by violence. Uranus, the sky, produces children with Gaia, the Earth, but hates them. Of their children is the titan Cronus who castrates his father. His blood falls onto the Earth and sea and creates still more gods. Cronus is, in turn, dethroned and imprisoned by Zeus. Celtic paganism does little better. Drawing on contemporary sources, most scholars believe the Druids enacted human sacrifices on a broad scale to appease the forces of nature, which they saw as temperamental and hostile. One example is the Lindow man, whose mangled remains suggest a ritual death as part of cultic sacrifice. Employing St. Augustine's approach to the depravity of pagan gods, writer Paul Krause offered this critique: The pagan gods were born from patricide and rebellion. They were born from primordial acts of sexual violence. Their patronage was in the civitas terrena which cared only to advance its depraved lust to control. Modern pagans reject ancient paganism. They find solidarity with the idea of human equality and dignity, see the natural world as a place of order rather than of chaos, and call for sexual restraint, the protection of children and disadvantaged groups, the end of slavery, mindless conquest, and human sacrifice. To this extent, they are embracing the innovations of Christianity. After all, it was Christianity and not paganism, as historian Tom Holland has explained, that taught that men, women, and children, slave or free, share the imago dei. It was St. Patrick, not the Druids, who believed and taught Ireland that “the Earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof” and not subject to hostile spirits who are appeased by bloodletting. It was Christianity that turned Nordic peoples away from a belief system that committed them to conquest, plunder, and death in battle. In short, all the things that make modern paganism appealing to modern people aren't pagan. Though many Westerners are bored by the hollowness of materialism and desperate to fill the spiritual vacuum it has left, they will not find answers in dead religions. Only Jesus offers the truth: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” This Breakpoint was co-authored by Kasey Leander. We lay claim to what we name and therefore assume ownership. Names are powerful. They provide the designator with dominion and power over what is being named, see Genesis 2:19-20 or demonology. This is the same reason why we provide names to heat waves, hurricanes, and weather events in general, or talk about bomb cyclones and atmospheric rivers. It's why we redefine words like inflation, pandemic, virus, or vaccine. It's why we call January 6th Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, etc. By invoking trauma and history we can control emotion. By personalizing something we can both control it and use it to control other people. From Hollywood to professional sports, and from media to healthcare, images, names and descriptions of octopus or squid are legion. Hollywood in particular is obsessed with using Lovecraftian images in movies, television shows, and even in the music industry. Consider the ink of these creatures, like black goo from the X Files, a vehicle to perpetuate an agenda. Ink is in the pen, which is mightier than the sword at creating new worlds and ideas. Professional hockey has the Seattle Kraken, a team that plays in climate pledge arena, yet another obsession of the ever changing narrative. Social media companies like Meta have recently used the squid as the centerpiece of their advertising campaign. In a new comic miniseries Rick and Morty are plunging into a pit of Lovecraftian horror, while Batman does the same for his next animated movie. The U.S. Army has the Typhon missile system, recently delivered by Lockheed. The Kraken is even a bitcoin trading platform. Now, in a place you would least expect it, even the world of health and medicine has classified a new ‘coronavirus' variant as the Kraken - with Basilisk, Argus (giant), Chiron (son of Cronus) and Typhon (god of chaos/storms) coming soon. Literally. It's everywhere. Such a name implies terror, as countless sailors felt about the legendary sea monster of the same name. In fact, the only reason that you would name something Kraken is if you wanted to frighten people by drawing on the energy of Cthulhu. With recent sightings of a Typhon-like monster in North Carolina and a literal Kraken-Octopus in BC, Canada, it seems that through these invocations of monsters, titans, etc., are literally being drawn (like a pen) into our world through sympathetic magic.
Zeus, the chief deity in Greek mythology, is the Olympian god of sky and thunder and is king of all other gods and men.His tale is one of overthrowing fathers, eating babies and seducing women, both mortal and divine, by changing his own form. He's one of the most complex figures in history, and his story is one that's been retold throughout millennia. To try and make sense of it all, we're going back to the very beginning, to the origins of Zeus, starting with his grandfather and grandmother, Uranus and Gaia.
