Two weeks ago, a good buddy of mine was in for our Mastermind meeting. Joe Hashey is a rare breed, one of those men that have an indomitable mindset. There aren't too many people that I look up to with mindset because I've studied it so much and put myself through the ringer to continue to grow my mind. Joe is an exception though. He is doing 100 mile races, holds one of the world records for the famous Manitou Incline climb out in Colorado where he lives, held the world pull up record, briefly, after he did 4100 or so on his 40th birthday. We snuck away on lunch break to a back room to record this and it was something I have been wanting to get out to you for a while, because we can all learn from him, myself included. In this episode, we cover: The mindset it takes to complete an ultra marathon The ‘switch' that made Joe start doing the impossible and it wasn't all that long ago How he runs his family and why we can all do better in this regard His top two favorite books The inner dialogue that is needed to become a world class endurance athlete And so much more. You can follow Joe on Instagram at Jhashey1 and you can check out his podcast and book at https://strongfamilyproject.com/

Summary In this episode of the Coaches Roundtable, Chase and Chris answer various fitness-related questions. They discuss the impact of water weight on weight fluctuations and emphasize the importance of tracking fluctuations to understand how the body responds to certain factors. The coaches also provide insights on exercises that can be done at home with or without equipment, and offer tips for building stamina for challenging activities like the Manitou Spring Incline in Colorado. They address the concept of heart rate during workouts and explain that it is more important to focus on movement and overall trends rather than specific heart rate numbers. Additionally, they recommend websites and resources for proper lifting techniques and alternative exercises. The episode concludes with a call for more listener questions. Takeaways Water weight can significantly affect weight fluctuations, but it is not an excuse for weight changes. Tracking fluctuations can help understand how the body responds to certain factors. Exercises can be done at home with or without equipment. Bodyweight exercises can be effective, but adding resistance or getting creative with household items can enhance progress. Building stamina for challenging activities requires gradually increasing intensity and getting accustomed to the environment, such as higher elevations. Heart rate during workouts depends on individual goals, but it is more important to focus on movement and overall trends rather than specific heart rate numbers. Websites like Mind Pump and Jordan Lips' database offer resources for proper lifting techniques. It is important to understand the purpose of each exercise and find alternatives that target the same muscle groups. HIIT training can be done with running or walking, and the intensity should be adjusted based on individual capabilities and goals. When the gym is crowded or certain exercises cannot be performed, alternative exercises can be found by replicating the motion with different equipment. Listeners are encouraged to submit more questions for future episodes of the Coaches Roundtable. In "Cracking the Code: Understanding the Non-Linear Journey of Fitness," hosts Heath and Aly delve into the intricate nature of fitness progress, debunking the myth of a linear path to success. Drawing an insightful analogy to the iconic Manitou Incline in Colorado Springs, Heath vividly illustrates how fitness journeys mirror the uneven, varied steps of this challenging incline.Recalling their group's experience during a convention, Heath reminisces about tackling the incline, where each step differed in size and steepness. This analogy serves as a poignant reminder that progress in fitness isn't a straightforward ascent but rather a series of diverse challenges and plateaus.Throughout the episode, Heath and Aly highlight the significance of being realistic about one's fitness goals. They emphasize that expecting a linear progression can lead to frustration and demotivation. Instead, they advocate for embracing the non-linear nature of the journey, understanding that setbacks and fluctuations are integral parts of achieving lasting fitness success.Listeners are encouraged to adopt a mindset that acknowledges the variability of progress, akin to navigating the diverse steps of the Manitou Incline. By doing so, they can approach their fitness endeavors with patience, resilience, and a realistic perspective, ultimately paving the way for sustainable and fulfilling results.

From Tragedy to Triumph Mandy Horvath | The Hopeaholics PodcastJoin us on the Hopeaholics Podcast for an awe-inspiring episode featuring the incredible journey of Mandy, an American bi-lateral above-knee amputee. She's not just a survivor; she's a creative writer, a compelling public speaker, a talented actress, and an adventurous mountaineer. On July 26, 2014, Mandy faced a life-changing moment when she was struck by a locomotive near a bar in Steele City, Nebraska. After consuming two beers and two shots while playing pool inside the tavern throughout the evening, she walked outside and blacked out, regaining consciousness in an ambulance with no lower extremities. She believes she was incapacitated by a date rape drug, but was woken from a medically induced coma several days later without the ability to test for the drugs in her system. The authorities had written the incident off as a suicide attempt. Horvath's date of that night suspiciously died of carbon monoxide poisoning, just a few months later that year. He was found deceased within the cab of a vehicle, in a closed garage. The authorities labeled his death an accident despite his profession as a heavy equipment operator. Nearly a year into recovery from the initial trauma, Horvath was set back again, having to be re-amputated due to a rare form of bone regeneration.Mandy's story is nothing short of extraordinary. She's notably the first female bi-lateral amputee to achieve remarkable feats, including summiting the Manitou Incline, conquering Pikes Peak not once but twice, ascending the Statue of Liberty stairwell to the crown, and conquering Tanzania's formidable Mount Kilimanjaro, all without the use of prosthetic equipment. Her unparalleled determination and courage led her to scale these incredible heights, using only her arms and hands to crawl. One of her most astounding accomplishments is her successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, which earned her the title of the first legless woman to summit one of the world's Eight Summits without the aid of prosthetic equipment. Mandy's indomitable spirit and unwavering resilience serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration to all. It's probably fitting that Andrea Sansone and Andrew Hamilton met at the summit of a Colorado 14er, one of the 58 such peaks in the state that have gone on to help forge their relationship. Though neither considers themselves trail runners, the duo routinely puts up times on popular alpine routes that outpace those of the pros. Andrew has held the supported FKT for climbing all of Colorado's 14ers since 2015, and last year, Andrea set the supported FKT on Nolan's 14, becoming the first woman to complete the roughly 100-mile route in less than 2 days. As the high country continues to thaw, Matt Mitchell sat down with Andrea and Andrew to talk about their summer goals; the partnership they've formed by doing hard stuff in the mountains together; lapping the Manitou Incline for 24 hours straight; and much more. The Manitou Incline is a hiking trail located near Colorado Springs that ascends approximately 2,000 feet in elevation (peaking at about 8,590 feet) over a span of a mile. Over the years, there have been only a handful of audacious climbers who have hiked this trail 500 times in a year earning themselves a spot in the "500 Club". Additionally, there are only a rare few who have made it to the "1,000 club", and Rachel Jones is one of them. Rachel Jones aka "The Queen of the Incline" is the first woman to hike the Manitou Incline 1,000 times (1,003 to be exact) in a single year, and she faced a lot of obstacles along the way. For Rachel, joining the 1,000 club had almost nothing to do with achievement, and instead had everything to do with growth. In this episode Rachel pulls apart her journey climbing the Manitou Incline time and time again, some days completing entire marathons laps. We cover how to break through the self imposed limitations we all put on ourselves and go after what you think isn't possible for you.

(Spoiler: She completed many of those climbs while pregnant!) Lynn Marks, of North Carolina, who completed her very first Ironman triathlon (that's a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run) at the age of 58. What is the one step you need to take to change your life? A couple weekends ago at the Incline Your Life Retreat the first step you needed to take to get to the top of the incline was the first step out of 2,768 steps. So how does that translate to changing your life? You need to be committed to what you want. You need to have awareness of where you are and then know where you want to go. Then making a commitment is the first thing you do to get into the massive action you need to change. If you are not sure what you are committing to or the direction you want to go, the action you take will be meaningless.I shared examples of the things we did at the retreat with our movement to the top of the incline and learning how to prepare food, and coaching on how to implement the things we learned. The incline was a physical way to show what commitment looks like, and set the pattern to follow with our food and mind. Welcome to The Hiker Podcast. This week I am excited to talk with Hiker and Influencer Nelson Holland. Hey my name is Nelson Holland better known as Fatblackandgettinit. I was born in NY but moved to Colorado in 2014. Ever Since I saw the Rockies in person, I was enamored. At first I would drive around and take in the beautiful views but before long, I knew I had to get out and explore. One day I ran into a herd of elk hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park and I turned into the 5 year old version of myself again. I was hooked. Since then, I have learned about some of the amazing physical and mental benefits of hiking. My social media goal is to share those benefits and amazing views with the world, especially the communities who rarely see nature in this way. I really want to do my part in making the outdoors inclusive and accessible for everyone. I did the Manitou Incline 3 times last year twice at over 300 lbs and a 14er at about 320lbs. I hope to become a mountaineer one day. In 2014, Smithville MO native Mandy Horvath was having drinks with friends...what happened next remains unclear, but likely her drink was spiked...and she was found on a set of railroad tracks, both legs severed above the knees. Most people would give up...and Mandy almost did...but she eventually decided to turn this tragedy into something more positive. She's climbed Pike's Peak twice. She's climbed the Manitou Incline in Colorado. And recently, she became the first female double amputee to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro!! Mandy stopped by the studio for a visit, and what followed was a conversation about her amazing journey from tragedy to triumph!! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Some say it's 2,744 steps, others say 2,768. Rebecca completely lost count, lost her breath and nearly lost her mind while trying to climb the Manitou Incline. It's one mile straight up the base of Pikes Peak...all in railroad tie steps that used to be an actual railroad for a cable car. Find out if she completed the challenge. https://www.instagram.com/tryinglifesisters/ We'd love to hear what you're trying to this year. Mandy Horvath, is a bi-lateral above knee amputee, who in 2018, became the first female double amputee to ascend the Manitou Incline, raising awareness for limb loss. One month later, crawled all 13 miles of Barr Trail to the summit of Pikes Peak, using only her arms, to raise funds for Operation Ward 57 & The Battle Buddy Foundation. These historic events garnished local, national and international press. But when the cameras were off, she struggled with alcoholism, and after a series of events, Mandy found herself in hot water with the law after committing 3 DUIs in a 6 month period and harmed an AMR paramedic who was attempting to assist her. 12 hours after she was awarded a community medal, she was found asleep in her car intoxicated. Because of a series of poor choices, in one night, Mandy went from being recognized as a community icon to being very publicly shamed for her wrongdoings.Mandy was given a chance to resolve her addiction, and she figuratively ran with it.Almost 3 years later and sober, Mandy has led a successful excursion of 4 grown men, including fellow bi-lateral amputee US Army Veteran Travis Strong, to the summit of Pikes Peak, became the first documented amputee to crawl up to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, and is now preparing to ascend Mt. Kilimanjaro. She will be the first female amputee to reach one of the globe's 8 summits without the use of prosthetic equipment, and will be the legacy she leaves for her own children.Socials:Website: mandyhorvath.com FB: Mandy Horvath @lifeproofMandyHorvath https://www.facebook.com/lifeproofmandyhorvathInsta: @lifeproofbionicwoman Go Fund Me (Mt Kilamanjaro) www.Gofundme.com/f/MandyHKilimanjaropaypal.me/lifeproofbionicwomanMentions:Cars4Heroes https://www.cars4heroes.org/Travis Strong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78lqEalvm58Enjoy the visual here on Youtube https://youtu.be/-4yRejHWrnI
Quote “Our elevation must be the result of self-efforts and work of our own hands. No other human power can accomplish it. If we but determine it shall be so, it will be so.” Martin Delany Welcome to the Sensory Strides podcast. Observations of the world through activity, reading, listening, and everything else. Welcome to season 5! During our break I became a Grandma! I’ve had the opportunity to spend time babysitting while my daughter was finally able to finish her clinical rotation for her RN degree. I love spending time with my granddaughter and have even gotten her out on some walks with me. Most of this winter, I hibernated. My husband and I were pretty good about getting some good long walks in, but once the cold really hit those walks went away. I have been working to get back into the habit of walking, but my schedule has not been cooperative. While looking forward to goals for this year, I realized I need to do different exercises as it is likely my goals will include some vertical hiking. I have been doing a 30 day lunge challenge in April. This past weekend I did some geocaching with a local student. We are working together to create some geocaching tips and tricks to support a geocaching challenge the county park group has put together. We visited some of the caches to identify and take pictures for tips that could help new cachers be successful. While climbing some of the trails I could really feel the muscle fatigue from that lunge series which reinforced the need to focus on uphill hiking. That gets back to the possible goals for this year. My husband and I are headed to Colorado in June. There are two things I am considering. The hike up Pikes Peak and the Manitou Incline. Both are super challenging on their own, but add in the elevation and they are even more difficult. I am confident my husband and I could do a 13 mile hill climb over an entire day in Wisconsin, but add in the extra elevation and no bail out options and I’m not sure it is the best decision for us. The Incline is much more difficult, but shorter and there is a bail out option halfway up. As someone who has to be very conscious to hydrate and pay attention to my body as I am susceptible to altitude sickness, this adds an extra element. Have you done an interesting Colorado hike? Please share and give me ideas. Thanks for joining me. Be sure to check our show notes for links to inspiration items and … don't forget to stop and smell the roses. Adapt. That's what we as athletes and humans do. When life throws us obstacles we transform to meet them head on. Today's guest exemplifies this. In 2014, Sherown Campbell, a lifelong athlete, father, and all around incredible human being, was paralyzed from the shoulders down. The injury classified him as a quadriplegic. The years following have seen Sherown persistently and patiently taking on his recovery one day at a time. Where he is now is an absolute inspiration- consistently working out to regain as much mobility and movement as possible. His persistence and positive mindset has helped him reach huge goals such as climbing the iconic Manitou Incline in Colorado Springs (2,000 feet of elevation in 1 mile). In this episode we chat about the athletic mindset and how Sherown has applied that throughout his recovery, the power his kids brings to his life, what it was like to take on the Manitou Incline and he teaches us an majorly important lesson about the "gift of presence." I was absolutely blown away by this conversation and am very excited to share it and Sherown's wisdom to all of you! Hope you all enjoy! Also a huge thanks to Tim Barr, my cohost for this podcast. Tim is an absolute beast of an ultra runner and it was really fun to chat with Sherown with him to see the parallels between athletes, fathers, and good humans! Soren and I recently took a little getaway from work and kids and while we were gone, we did something that he loves and some things that I love. We hiked the Manitou Incline (he loves) and I got out of my comfort zone (I love). We also got in a little shopping and relaxing! On our hike we met the most amazing couple and today I wanted to share the story of how we met. I could not have been more surprised by their story. Melinda is our kinda gal and I just know you'll love her too!

Follow Todd on Instagram @ToddBuckOne A familiar face, my friend Todd Buckingham who first appeared on episode 3 returns to complete some unfinished business as we chat about his new position as the Head Exercise Physiologist at Mary Free Bed's Rehabilitation. Recently Todd came back from the Ironman World Championship in Kona. Not as a competitor, but as a fellow team member of Every Man Jack where he performed some testing on his teammates to gather data. I ask Todd how to deal with sweating a lot for someone like myself who sweats more than average. He shares a simple, no nonsense way to ensure that dehydration doesn't derail my racing as well as the physiology behind it. In the middle of my chat with Todd I ask why the performance lab even exists at Mary Free Bed and who they aim to serve. I give him a hard time about using the lab to his advantage to be an even better athlete himself. As a recurring theme Todd reminds me that I need to run slower for my long runs to really maximize my running potential. Even with my experience something I have trouble heeding at times. I share with Todd my anticipated plans to run the Manitou Incline (covered in another video) Todd gives me an admonition on shoes and a story about how he set his new half marathon PR, 10k PR and 5k PR all in the same race. We cover some biomechanical efficiency as well before going off to part 3 as we discuss stride length and Todd's research we talked about in Episode 3 of the podcast. In the last part of our chat Todd and I continue to talk about running biomechanics. He dismisses a huge myth about stride length, running speed and height. One of our big reasons for Todd coming back on the show today was to discuss a research paper he wrote to try and make the USA Triathlon National Championship more fair after what he believed was an unfair setup in 2018. We talk about our shared issues with drafting penalties and the current system of giving penalties during a triathlon. Since we already know Todd's favorite recovery food (PB&J) I ask him a little more daunting question to end our chat today. Shop the Solpri store at https://solpri.com
