She uses memory as medium for dreamscaping the tragedies and desires within the Asian American diaspora and trans ethereality. Her poetry book, Blood Frequency, was shortlisted by C&R Press and the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network in 2022. Language and Literacy in Young PeopleAssociate Professor Suze LeitãoThis week, we set the scene for many upcoming conversations from researchers in the area of language and literacy. We took a broad view of what Language and Literacy in Young People is, what research is currently being conducted and where we can look to for the most up to date research in the area. There are several strands of research that we discussed which include intervention, theory and assessment, justice and mental health.  All of this research along with resources from the team are freely available at https://www.languageandliteracyinyoungpeople.com/A common question I often get from friends and colleagues is in the absence of any formal diagnosis, when should a child be referred to a speech pathologist? I learnt that a key concept is that if a parent or significant person in a child's life has concerns, then it is wise to seek an assessment. Far too often, parents are told ‘they will grow out of it.' We discussed some of the work by this research team is access to and maintenance of access to services. One of their projects is called “Finding the way to services: families' use of advice and publicly available information in navigating access to early intervention services." With more than one in five children in Western Australia (WA) considered developmentally vulnerable at school-entry, it is well-established that intervening early is essential to supporting lifelong developmental trajectories. However, research globally has identified significant delays across the stages of noticing, sharing concerns, and accessing services for children with developmental delays. As we discussed in the podcast, you can be part of this study through the following links:https://curtin.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1IcFxhLPPfU8up0 and through Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Finding-the-Way-to-Services/100082601830008/Another resource Suze discussed was the website for families who are waiting for speech pathology: https://wnswlhd.health.nsw.gov.au/our-services/speech-pathology/Finally, another resource Suze discussed was the book for parents and professionals to help them sort out snake oil from evidence based practice. This book is called Making Sense of Interventions for Children with Developmental Disorders: A guide for parents and professionals, by Caroline Bowen and Pamela Snow Croydon: J&R Press, 2017, 406pp., ISBN: 978-1-907826-32-0https://www.jr-press.co.uk/making-sense-of-interventions-for-childrens-developmental-disorders.htmlStay tuned for a deeper dive into some of the areas we discussed in this podcast with Suze.

Simply put, John Gosslee is an author, poet, and editor. With this in mind, we felt the need to get to know more about such a unique and ambitious artist. In order to dig down to the root of the question regarding who exactly John Gosslee is, it was imperative to get a first hand account of the various projects he helms, the books he has written, and the myriad of ventures he has embarked upon. In this latest episode of Beyond the Margin, we take a journey into the mind of a true original and an all around literary citizen. This is an episode where Gosslee’s early days birthing the renowned literary magazine Fjords Review are recalled, his time at Pank Magazine (“the riskiest magazine on the literary scene”) is discussed, and where we delve into all his work with C and R Press and take a look at his recent tenure as the Editor In Chief of the New York based Arts publication Quiet Lunch. Amazingly, Gosslee oversaw all these endeavors while he was in the midst of releasing a collection of deeply thought-provoking and engaging books including: 12 Sonnets For the Zodiac (nominated for the National Book Critic’s Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize), Blitzkrieg, Analog, the controversial Out Of Context, and Fish Boy, and after touching on each book and to wind down the interview, Gosslee’s exciting forthcoming release, 50 Contemporary Women Artists: Groundbreaking Contemporary Art From 1960 to Now, was discussed as well as his collaboration with Across The Margin in Notes on A Poetry Film I never Made (ATM Publishing, Coming Soon…). In Jason Koo‘s new collection, America’s Favorite Poem (C&R Press, 2014), we see a poet placing himself on the timeline of his art. This timeline covers an ethnic, geographic, and artistic lineage that pays homage to Brooklyn’s literary heritage. As founder of Brooklyn Poets,  he extends his literary citizenship to offer community to disparate groups of poets who live and work in the borough. With Whitmanesque, sprawling lines, Koo finds the minutia of introspective content and sound to populate his pieces. What initially appears conversational, contains multitudes. He faces the darkness with an innate humor that assures the reader, nothing is so awful that it can’t be laughed at. This extends to the poet’s lighthearted demeanor and ease with the world. Koo has reverence for his literary forebears and this is expressed in his title choices and placement of the self against the metropolis background, wondering, “Whether I’ll screw this up, whether I’ll ever feel like I have enough,// Whether I am enough.” I encourage listeners to pick up America’s Favorite Poem for the countless pieces that could have been featured on this podcast if given the time. From baseball to artistic gentrification, we discussed it all on a rainy Saturday in NYC. I hope you enjoy this, my inaugural podcast with a brilliant writer at the beginning of a surely monumental career. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
