One of the important aspects of Black History Month is that it's not just about what happened 50, 100, 200 years ago. It's also about the present, the world around us and what's happening now to bring greater representation and celebration of African-American accomplishments and contributions. Of course, we should recognize and respect what has come before us. Black history is an integral part of American history and culture. But it's also important to recognize the lives and experiences of those we meet and work with everyday. Sharon Catherine Brown, or ShayCat as I came to know her during our recent production of Anne of Green Gables, is someone with such a rich history of experiences and a wealth of knowledge and insight from her 45 years as an actress and singer on both stage and screen, notably in TV shows with all-black casts like Good Times, The Jeffersons, and A Different World. It is a surety of herself and confidence in her actions that makes her someone to admire and applaud. Not because she's better than you or me, not because she's got it all together (which she'd be the first person to admit that's not the case), but rather because she is one of us, she's gone through her own challenges and felt the ups and downs of this career and has come through them a better performer and a better person. So it is with great pleasure that I bring you the second half of our conversation. She talks about a nightmare experience on stage in Flora, The Red Menace and recalls the milestone TV shows she was a part of with all-black casts, and she also emphasizes the importance of knowing our worth as actors.    Subscribe to WINMI If you wanna listen to the full conversation (with Audition Stories and the Final Five questions) as well as get early access to every episode, then become a monthly or yearly subscriber to Why I'll Never Make It. One essential ingredient to any actors career is experience. It allows us to develop our craft and hone our skills over time. With each performance, we refine techniques, learn from mistakes, and develop greater emotional and psychological depth in our performances. But this growth in credibility and authenticity in acting comes as much from our offstage lives as it does from our onstage experiences. And today's guest shares both personal and professional challenges that have shaped her not only into a great actress, but an amazing person as well. Sharon Catherine Brown has appeared in films like A Chorus Line and Sister Act 2, in soap operas like Generations, and sitcoms like The Jeffersons, Good Times, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But theater is where she got her start and remains her first love. From Broadway productions of Dreamgirls and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to the national tours of The Wiz, Rent, and Jekyll & Hyde, ShayCat (as she's known to friends) has the kind of experiences and resume that any actor would love to have. She and I met this past year doing a new musical version of the classic novel, Anne of Green Gables. And in part one of our conversation, she shares with us the long line of performers in her family (namely Johnny Brown, her father), a harrowing experience in her first Broadway show (Maggie Flynn), and the moment she knew she was born to be a drama queen. Timeline of this episode's conversation: 03:27 - How she got the name ShayCat  05:39 - Story #1: Coming from a long line of Broadway performers 19:55 - Story #2: The moment she knew she was a drama queen  36:50 - Performing difficult scenes with children as well as adults 43:15 - Productions needing to cast big names to get an audience   Subscribe to WINMI If you wanna listen to the full conversation (with Audition Stories and the Final Five questions) as well as get early access to every episode, then become a monthly or yearly subscriber to Why I'll Never Make It. The evolution of sales Catherine is another bold one and explains the real psychology of sales Why sales people don't want to sell The science of silence in sales calls Catherine's conversation that counted and why she's now grateful for rejection A poignant moment from the episode: "...During Covid, I started hosting rooms and following different people around. Social Audio apps. I don't even know all the names anymore, but Social Audio, when I say that, I mean there's a face and some of the apps have a group chat where people type, but there's no video. You don't see anyone. And so the way you run a room when you only have audio felt to me like, this must be what it's like to run a radio talk show where someone calls in and you don't know what they're going to say. You give them a chance to speak and then you have to decide how to manage it. But what I observed and learned that I brought to my zoom calls, I brought to sales calls, I brought to speaking on stages, things like that, is that the best people who run rooms are measured and their use of silence is strategic..." Let's talk about women and pressure.  I don't have to tell you that we as women have huge expectations placed upon us to look a certain way, be a certain size, fit certain gender roles, etc. etc. etc.  The pressure is intense.   And it's about 1,000,000,000 times worse for moms. If you're a mom, do any of these sound familiar? What if I gain too much weight during pregnancy? What if I don't gain enough? What if I eat all the wrong things and it hurts my baby?  What if I don't feed them the right things when they're kids? What if I don't lose the baby weight? What if she/he/they don't like vegetables?  That's my fault, right? What if she/he/they grow up to eat nothing but McDonald's and Ben & Jerry's?  That's my fault too, right? So.  Much.  Pressure.   We're supposed to do it right.  Every time.  For us, for our kids, for our families.   I haven't spoken directly to moms on the podcast yet, so we're doing that this week.  Mom's have double the pressure.  They're supposed to do everything right for themselves and also for their kid(s).  And many times for their significant others as well.  Again:  so.  Much.  Pressure. On this week's podcast, I'm talking to Catherine Brown, author of Hope for Recovery: Stories of Healing from Eating Disorders.  Catherine shares her own eating disorder story, as well as her thoughts about how to help your kids cultivate a positive relationship with food.  We also discuss: The pressures that women face regarding their weight and their food choices during pregnancy Post pregnancy weight loss Conversations to have with your child about fat phobia It's such an important conversation, and I'm so thankful to Catherine for coming on the show! Firstly,Apologies for some pronunciations! I think I've 'murdered' some words or place names. So sorry. Below, you'll find the a list with the food stuff I'm talking about on the podcast.Dorset Blue VinneyElversBath ChapsForntum Black HamBrawnHead or Pork CheeseGloucester Old Spots PigHogs PuddingApple CakeBlueberry PieChilli MustardThanks to the detailed research by Laura Mason and Catherine Brown and their books!A lot of info comes from The Experienced English Housekeeper, is a cookery book by the English businesswoman Elizabeth Raffald (1733–1781). It was first published in 1769.The book contains some 900 recipes for: soups; main dishes including roast and boiled meats, boiled puddings, and fish; desserts, table decorations and "little savoury dishes"; potted meats, drinks, wines, pickles, preserves and distilled essences. The recipes consist largely of direct instructions to the cook, and do not contain lists of ingredients. The book is illustrated with three fold-out copper plate engravings. The book is noted for its practicality, departing from earlier practice in avoiding plagiarism, consisting instead almost entirely of direct instructions based on Raffald's experience. It introduced the first known recipe for a wedding cake covered in marzipan and royal icing, and is an early use of barbecue. The book remains a reference for cookery writers.http://www.elizabethraffaldsociety.org/ Other bits come from Martha Bradley's book The British Housewife (1758)The title page of book version of The British Housewife, published in 1758,[a] outlines that the work contains information on cookery, pastry, puddings, preserves, pickles, fricassees, ragouts, soups, sauces, jellies, tarts, cakes, creams, custards, candies, dried fruits, sweetmeats, wines, cordials and distilled spirits. The book also contained a chapter on cures for common ailments, which included a recipe that included powdered earthworm to cure ague. The work was divided up into monthly sections, and showed a "sophisticated organisation", according to Davidson.Bradenham Ham (Or Fortnum Black Ham) originated in Wiltshire, England. The ham is first dry-cured in salt, then placed in a liquid cure of molasses, coriander, juniper berries, and other ingredients. After curing, it is aged for 6 months, then smoked. The outside skin of the ham becomes black and shiny. The meat inside is sweet and mild. You can see a great recipe for Brawn at Borough Markets website:https://boroughmarket.org.uk/recipes/brawn Thanks!
