In today's episode, we'll be talking about early modern English nobility. Shakespeare's history plays are about monarchs and royal lineages, and the world he was writing in was organized by ranks and degrees. So, we think it's important to talk about these pivotal ranks from kings to landed gentry. And we want to acknowledge that this mini-episode is strictly focusing on the social ranks from the Crown down to the landed gentry. We will be discussing additional ranks and social classes of England in forthcoming episodes. Shakespeare Anyone? is created and produced by Kourtney Smith and Elyse Sharp.

Can business and spirituality actually coexist? Join our host Michael Banks and guest Dr Lynne Sedgmore, a bold and courageous disrupter, as they delve into the intrigue and complexities of integrating spirituality into business and leadership. In her new book ‘Goddess Luminary Leadership Wheel: A Post Patriarchal Paradigm' she explores how the ‘sacred feminine' can inform business leadership. As a former CEO, advisor to the UK government, and board director of over twenty five organisations, Lynne Sedgmore has lived the challenges of integrating spirituality into business and leadership. She tells the story of trying to introduce love as a value into a business school twenty years ago and how that concluded. Lynne also discusses the value of exploring one's ‘shadow', and the ‘intersectionality' of pressures were under, in order to grow as a leader. Spirituality and business are two words you rarely see in the same sentence. On the surface, the two seem at odds with each other. However, this is not some New Age, airy-fairy concept but a journey into the future of leadership described by someone who has had a long career of success and getting things done in the real world. Are you curious as to how you can incorporate spirituality into your business practice? Listen this episode with Dr Lynne Sedgmore where she shares how spirituality can be a powerful management concept for leadership that the planet urgently needs. In this interview, you'll learn how Logan Naidu built one of the fastest-growing recruitment companies in the UK based on a core set of corporate values: Excellence, Partnership, Knowledge, Diversity and Kindness. You'll also hear Logan's amazing story of resilience and how being diagnosed with cancer at age 31 was the catalyst for a significant change in the trajectory of his recruiting career. Plus he shares his insights on learning and development, assessing culture fit, and successful business models. Named by The Sunday Times as one of Britain's 500 most influential people, Logan is the founder and CEO of Dartmouth Partners. Over the last 8 years, they've grown from a start-up to one of the UK's fastest-growing recruitment companies, have received private equity backing, and made their first acquisition, Pure search. Today the group operates as a multi-brand, multi-niche player, 180 employees across 5 Geographies and are listed as FT1000 fastest growing companies in Europe and are set for tremendous continued growth over the coming year. Episode Outline and Highlights [2:05] Logan's amazing story of resilience and source of motivation. [13:22] The ‘Classroom to Boardroom' model. [17:32] Logan's approach to assessing culture fit. [22:30] Success as a Billing Manager - how Logan was able to balance making placements, training a team, and running a business. [27:34] Should the top biller always be promoted to a leadership role? Hear Logan's deciding factors. [30:52] Kindness as a corporate value? Hear the two aspects of how kindness can be applied in the context of a recruitment business. [35:37] Unlocking real sustainable growth with learning and development - Dartmouth's world-class aspirations. [46:21] Scaling your business - Logan shared his experience on the constraints and how he overcame them. Million Pound per Year Biller I asked Logan why he left the first business that he co-founded. He explained that despite being a million-pound biller for two consecutive years, certain life-changing events made him redefine his purpose and ultimately led to some business decisions. I can't help but be astounded and inspired by Logan as he shared his journey. At the age of 31, he experienced three life-changing events - getting married, being diagnosed with cancer a day before their first anniversary, and having a child six months after being diagnosed. These combined experiences made him realize that although he'd been successful as a big biller in a small boutique, “Life is super short … I don't want this to be the rest of my working career.” From a personal development perspective, he was more motivated by “business” than by “billing” and wanted to grow a large business. This ambition wasn't shared by his partners at the time who were happy running a boutique, so he exited his first company to launch Dartmouth Partners. Kindness as a Corporate Value Dartmouth Partners corporate values are Excellence, Partnership, Knowledge, Diversity and Kindness. The one that jumped out to me from this list is ‘kindness.' I can't remember seeing this word in a recruitment company's values statement before. Yet it's one that resonates with me personally. So what does kindness mean in the context of a recruitment business? Logan explained how kindness could be applied in the way we treat others both external and internal. From an external point of view, Logan elaborated, “Listening to them [candidates] and taking them seriously is really important. I think we forget that in the industry because we think about deals and transactions but this is, fundamentally, a very human job and that's a real privilege. Actually, you get to know your candidates really well, a lot of them become friends over time and they really trust you.” On an internal relevance, kindness is definitely needed when dealing with your team. “The bit internally, I think talking to people and ultimately treating them in a grown-up manner. Recruitment companies tend to go down the route of micro-management and KPIs. But actually, if we hire bright, good, hard-working people and train them in the right way, you can give them an awful lot of freedom. You don't need to micro-manage them.” Logan Naidu Bio and Contact Info Logan is the founder and CEO of Dartmouth Partners. He has a notable track record in recruiting across financial services but with a particular focus on M&A and Private Equity. While running the firm from a strategic perspective, Logan uses his recruitment expertise to guide consultants in the execution of roles. He continues to work on the delivery of more senior advisory and investment mandates. Logan studied to Masters level at the University of Birmingham before entering the City in 2000. He began his career at JPMorgan and PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Corporate Finance. Logan co-founded the Cornell Partnership in 2005 before leading a successful exit of the financial services and graduate business to form what is now Dartmouth. Logan has a desire for individuals and businesses to work together to mutually flourish and to enjoy shared success and this is reflected internally at Dartmouth. Dartmouth's success is partly due to Logan's drive to succeed. It has also been recognised in numerous industry accolades: Debrett's People of Today (2017) The Sunday Times as one of Britain's 500 most influential people (2016) Shortlisted as Recruitment Entrepreneur of the Year and GB Entrepreneur of the Year in the services industry (2015) Growing Business “Young Gun” Awards (2013) Outside of Dartmouth, Logan is a trustee of Thrive Youth Trust, the partner charity to Thrive In Work, a social enterprise enabling young people to gain employment. Sign up to our newsletter for more in-depth insights | Follow us on LinkedIn Peter Harrison, included in Debrett's 500 most influential people, starts by describing a rebellious youth that led him to reject his family's wish to study Theology at Oxbridge and instead to make a decision to go to Bath University to study Business in the 1980s. From there he talks of his first job at Schroders, working as an analyst, and further experiences he had at Newton, Flemings, Deutsche Asset Management and then a start-up, RWC. Peter describes their merger with Schroders and his ascent to CEO, and the journey from managing money to managing an investment business. The conversation moves to him talking about the compelling opportunities in Global Asset Management, contrary to some gloomy commentaries that we often read. He talks of the shift to managing money to solve problems and not simply to be benchmarked, and the evolution of active and passive strategies. He describes Schroder's vision of serving the individual customer, both affluent and high net worth, with the help of more electronic applications, a wider public and private offering and trying to help them avoid classic pitfalls of poor timing in entering and exiting the market. He also explains why although he thinks ESG must be embedded in your investment process, it will morph into a more coherent drive for impact investing. Peter also gives his thoughts on the growth of private equity, and the challenge facing stock markets buffeted by weighty regulation and diminished liquidity. He then discusses advice for the young thinking about future career, and some of the characteristics he looks for in potential hires.
In this week’s podcast, we talk to The Spectator's editor Fraser Nelson and associate editor Douglas Murray about the challenges facing a freshly re-elected SNP. What next for Nicola Sturgeon - full steam ahead for IndyRef2? Or have neither Scotland or Number 10 the bottle for an all-out battle for independence? [01:02] ‘When you look at the practicalities, the case for independence really does fall. Nicola Sturgeon is selling it in the abstract: “Do you feel Scottish”?’ - Fraser Nelson Meanwhile in matters of social etiquette, the new post-pandemic era looms, complete with new modes of social interactions and conversational topics. In this week’s magazine, Rachel Johnson lays down the new laws of conversational topics - sex, art and travel is fine; kids, vaccines and masks are most definitely not. She joins us now, along with Lucy Hume, from that venerable arbiter of taste and decorum, Debrett’s, for some ideas for the upcoming social summer. [12:25] 'I sometimes got emails from people, during lockdown, saying, I’m on my way to my second house, can you confirm this is legal or not, as if I was the ultimate arbiter of the crazy compliance and Covid restrictions!' - Rachel Johnson Finally, as the government announces its plans to introduce new asset thresholds for households seeking healthcare in old age, Leo McKinstry writes in The Spectator this week of his irritation with middle-class homeowners scandalised at the prospect of selling their homes to finance healthcare in their old age. Should this be a cost collectively borne by the taxpayer or should those with ample assets simply bear the brunt of the cost? Will Heaven, Director of Policy and Communications at the Policy Exchange think tank, joins us to argue the point. [23:00] 'I think if you were to tell most 40-year olds that you’re going to pay one penny extra on income tax over the course of your career but you’re never going to have to worry about high social care costs and parents and grandparents, they’d probably go for it' - Will Heaven. We learn manners from Lucy Hume of UK etiquette institution Debrett’s. Plus: Simon Freeman from running title ‘Like The Wind’ and Rachel Arthur from ‘Boom Saloon’ magazine.
In our very first episode of Grilling, Simon is joined by the one-and-only Nadiya Hussain. Nadiya rose to fame after winning The Great British Bake Off in 2015 - who can forget her Big Fat British Wedding cake? - and has since gone on to become a hugely popular TV presenter and author. In 2017, she was named by Debrett's as one of the 500 most influential people in the UK, which is quite the meteoric rise from her humble Luton origins. It's been an extraordinary journey. As they explore Nadiya's passion for food, she and Simon discuss the influence of her Bangladeshi origins on her cooking, her battles with mental health, and the pressures of being a role model as a Muslim woman. She also takes up our barbecue recipe challenge, and reveals her hidden gem of a foodie establishment - which can be found in Leeds market and sounds absolutely sensational! We're also giving away a state of the art Weber Grill in every single episode. Sir Xavier Rolet was listed in Harvard's 2017 Business Review as one of the best 100 CEOs in the world, recorded in Debrett's as one of the most influential people in finance, was a former Member of PM Cameron's business advisory group, and previous head of the London Stock Exchange. He describes a career in finance that began with a decade at Goldman Sachs which in turn prepared him to run the European Equity and risk businesses for several major financial institutions. In addition, having been CEO of Lehman Bros France, he offers his views on the reasons for Lehman's ultimate collapse. Xavier shares his thoughts on the imperative to encourage technology and innovation for those managing businesses and making boardroom appointments, and why he believes Europe's addiction to debt finance, and discouragement of equity finance has exacerbated its transition to the slow lane of global growth. He talks about the reorientation he undertook whilst CEO of the London Stock Exchange and the succession of transformatory deals which he engineered, propelling the value of the company from under £1 billion to £14 billion in just 9 years. He goes into a detailed explanation of why “the only asset that creates wealth is equities”, why boardrooms are filled with people ill versed in technology and innovation, and why France along with other European countries have failed to grasp the opportunity to develop the Googles and Amazons of Europe. He then discusses why London has a good chance of retaining its pre-eminence as a financial centre, notwithstanding Brexit, because of its global reach in multiple areas of finance. The conversation switches to wine as he discusses Chene Bleu the Super-Rhone he and his wife own in ChateauNeuf du Pape, their top to bottom organic approach and processes, and the challenge for wine makers facing climate change. He talks about racing the Paris-Dakar rally, provides unconventional advice for the young to back innovators, not join mainstream firms and the opportunities that exist in a fragmented but exciting world. This show is full of gems – Formidable!
Welcome to the fifth episode of The Making Of... from The Female Lead. Our guest this week is the FGM campaigner and author, Nimco Ali. As a survivor of FGM herself, for over 10 years Nimco has been fighting to end this practice throughout the world. She is CEO of the Five Foundation and she has just been appointed as an independent government adviser tackling violence against women and girls. In 2019 she also published her first book What We're Told Not To Talk About (But We're Going To Anyway). Our conversation covered many tough topics like FGM and violence against women, as well as race, privilege and coming to terms with the past. It was an emotional conversation at times and we were honoured to experience Nimco's total honesty and willingness to share. We recorded the interview over zoom, at the height of lockdown, so please bear with us as some bits may sound a little wobbly. * Nimco Ali OBE is a Somali British social activist and writer. She co-founded Daughters of Eve, a non-profit organisation which works to protect girls and young women who are at risk from female genital mutilation (FGM), in 2010 and The Five Foundation, which leverages resources for front line activists, in 2019. Nimco has helped to position FGM as a central issue in ending violence against women and girls. Her professional experience has included working for counter-terrorism within the civil service, supporting the rights of girls in the UK as part of Girlguiding UK and as network lead on The Girl Generation, the DfID-funded anti-FGM social change communications initiative. She is also a leading commentator in international media on the rights of girls and women – particularly surrounding FGM and related issues. In 2014, she was awarded Red Magazine's Woman of the Year award, and placed at No 6 on the Woman's Hour Power List.
