In this special Passover episode, Mijal is joined by Rabbi David Wolpe to explore why Pesach continues to resonate so deeply with Jews around the world in 2025. They unpack timeless and timely themes: What makes the Passover seder the most observed Jewish ritual? Can a story be meaningful even if it's not 100% historical? How do we talk about Israel, Zionism, and Jewish solidarity around the seder table post-October 7? Rabbi Wolpe shares personal memories, powerful insights on kitniyot, peoplehood, and why he still sees the seder as a miraculous act of Jewish hope. They also dive into how to engage young kids, honor hostages in Gaza, and make space at the table for honest disagreement — all while staying grounded in empathy and Jewish values. In this episode, Rabbi David Wolpe joins us for a thought-provoking conversation about the challenges and opportunities facing the Jewish people today. In the wake of October 7th, intra-faith dialogue is as critical as interfaith dialogue. The Jewish community must find ways to foster understanding, break down barriers, and build unity among diverse perspectives. Rabbi Wolpe reflects on the enduring influence of Maimonides, whose teachings continue to resonate across Jewish movements and explores how his philosophy shapes modern Jewish thought. We discuss the evolution of New Atheism, from Christopher Hitchens to Alex O'Connor, and what this shift means for conversations about faith within the Jewish context. The conversation also delves into culturally religious figures like Dennis Prager and Jordan Peterson, examining whether a meaningful religious message can be upheld without traditional observance. Rabbi Wolpe addresses the hardest questions raised by atheists—about evil, belief, and God's hiddenness—and shares his vision for making faith relevant and compelling in a skeptical world. This episode challenges us to think deeply about faith, unity, and the future of Judaism. Rabbi David Wolpe tells a classic story of speaking to a group of American Jews  in Tulsa, Oklahoma at their JCC about God.  He was trying to make the case that God loves them.  But he could see that his words were not resonating.  Being the seasoned speaker that he is, he decided to take a bit of a gamble.  He stopped his prepared remarks and said:  If you think God loves you, please rise.  In the entire large amphitheater which sat hundreds of people, exactly one person stood up.  So Rabbi Wolpe tried again.  If you think God loves you, please stand up.  Nobody else got up.  Just the one man standing.  At last Rabbi Wolpe turned to that man and said, Sir, you believe that God loves you? I do indeed, he said.  What is your name?  Oral Roberts. Oral Roberts was a Christian televangelist.  He was the only one in the Jewish Community Center that believed that God loves us. That lack of ease with God is built into our very name: Israel, the one who struggles with God.  This story happened years before October 7.  If it were hard for Jews to connect with a loving God before October 7, how much harder is it for us to believe in God's love after October 7.  As we approach the one-year anniversary of October 7, is there any God we can believe in?

THE MEDICAL RECORD: OTTAWA'S $13 BILLION DOLLAR DENTAL COVERAGE PLAN Liz West is joined by Dr. Alisa Naiman, Family Physician and Founder and Medical Director of The Medical Station in Toronto, Dr. Malcolm Moore, Medical Oncologist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Dr. Jamie Spiegelman, an Internal medicine and critical care physician at Humber River Hospital. Our panel reacts to Ottawa's $13 billion national dental coverage program and what that means for Seniors specifically. RABBI WOLPE RESIGNED FROM HARVARD'S ANTISEMITISM ADVISORY GROUP Liz West is now joined by Rabbi David Wolpe, a visiting scholar at Harvard's Divinity School who resigned from the university's Antisemitism Advisory Group followed by federal Conservative Deputy leader Melissa Lantsman. Last Thursday, Rabbi Wolpe publicly announced his decision to resign from Harvard University's Antisemitism Advisory Group. The reason for his decision in his own words from a post he made on X (formerly Twitter): "the system at Harvard along with the ideology that grips far too many of the students and faculty, the ideology that works only along axes of oppression and places Jews as oppressors and therefore intrinsically evil, is itself evil. Ignoring Jewish suffering is evil. Belittling or denying the Jewish experience, including unspeakable atrocities, is a vast and continuing catastrophe. Denying Israel the self-determination as a Jewish nation accorded unthinkingly to others is endemic, and evil." So, first of all, what exactly is the antisemitism advisory group and what has been Rabbi Wolpe's reaction to the testimony of America's elite universities at Congress on the topic of antisemitism. Then on the program, Deputy leader of the Conservative Party of Canada reacts to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision to support a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. Some MPs in his own party disagreed with this decision including MP Marco Mendicino who said: "At present, that would only place in further jeopardy the safety and security of Israelis & Palestinians in Gaza.". NEW REAL ESTATE POLICY ON OPEN BIDDING Liz West is now joined by Steve Jelenic, Toronto Real Estate Agent with Sage Real Estate and Phil Soper, President of Royal LePage. A new real estate policy on open bidding has taken effect in Ontario starting December 1st. The policy will allow for sellers to publicly disclose submitted bid prices. But just because it is now possible to do so, how many sellers will actually want to do this? And, what is even the benefit of this new policy?

Newsweek Magazine once called Rabbi Wolpe the most influential rabbi in America. He is the Senior Rabbi at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles and he's the author of eight books including one about King David and another gem called Why Be Jewish? I don't remember the last time I enjoyed preparing for an interview so much. I'm named after King David, but until this interview, I hadn't explored the history of my name in more than a decade. This interview touches on various parts of Judaism including how rabbis should interpret the Bible, what we can learn from King David, and how Judaism anchors us when a loved one dies. There were two parts that I'll always remember. The first was a discussion about the concept of aloneness in Judaism. On one hand, the book of Deuteronomy says: “It is not because you are the most numerous of peoples that I have set my heart upon you and treasured you—indeed, you are the fewest.” On the other, community is everywhere in Jewish life and the first thing God called not good in the Bible is loneliness — “It is not good for the man to be alone (Gen 2:18).” Secondly, I enjoyed our conversation about repentance in the Jewish faith and how you must repent after a loved one dies but also have to stop after 11 months. If this conversation interests you, I recommend his sermons on YouTube and the book I mentioned before called: Why Be Jewish? ____________________________ Show Notes 3:15 - How Jews have uniquely struggled with their identity and the way they present themselves. 5:56 - How the heroes of the Jewish culture have changed over time and what makes them heroic. 8:26 - What makes Judaism different from Christianity. 11:39 - The interpretation of the Bible and how Judaism reconciles its eternal nature with the changing interpretations over time. 14:43 - The most meaningful traditions in Jewish people's lives and why Rabbi Wolpe sees the Jewish mourning rituals as some of the most powerful. 19:24 - Why many Jewish people converted to Buddhism in the Modern era. 22:11 - Why the decline of religious people throughout the world may indicate a decline in art being created. 25:52 - The power of a culture of togetherness and why Rabbi Wolpe believes that Judaism was unique in being welcomed to America with open arms. 29:02 - Yom Kippur and why Judaism uniquely holds a ritual of confession not only for each person's sin but also from the sins of the Jewish people. 31:01 - One of the biggest differences between classical Christianity and Judaism. 34:35 - What separated Maimonides from other prominent Jewish philosophers. 36:39 - What Heschel meant in that the collapsing of space is seen as the collapsing of time. 38:45 - Why we should always take care of our "big rocks" first before anything else. 44:56 - Why modern life and technology can cause people to lose touch with the transcendent and the world around us. 49:09 - Why Rabbi Wolpe feels that introducing children to religion at an early age is important to their understanding of it. 54:20 - The origin of the Jewish style of dry humor. 1:00:05 - What about King David drew Rabbi Wolpe to study him so deeply. 1:04:34 - Why it's impossible to change the age of a boy's transition into a man through a bar mitzvah. 1:07:01 - What it means to Rabbi Wolpe to be a Rabbi.

Fed up with the mainstream media narrative and click-bait news, Dave decided to open up about his awakening, for all to see. Rabbi David Wolpe is the Max Webb Senior Rabbi of Sinai Temple, one of America’s flagship conservative synagogues. The author of eight books and countless essays and articles, he is one of America's leading rabbis. Rabbi Wolpe recently visited one of the Tikvah Fund’s student programs, where he sat down with our Executive Director, Eric Cohen, to discuss the vulnerabilities and strengths of non-Orthodox—what he calls, “non-literalist”—Judaism in America, religious freedom, Jewish politics, the biblical figure of David, the importance of the Hebrew language, and more. Have you ever thought about entering the rabbinate and becoming a leader of a Jewish congregation? Rabbi Wolpe reflects on the work of an American rabbi, and what that kind of communal leadership demands. Throughout this conversation, you’ll see how a theologian and communal leader assesses pockets of Jewish vitality, and strategizes about the future of his own denomination. A two-time winner of the National Magazine Award, the Pulitzer Prize of magazine writing, Fried has been a prolific writer of feature stories and personal essays for Vanity Fair, The Washington Post Magazine, GQ, Rolling Stone, Glamour, and Philadelphia magazine (where he also served for two years as editor-in-chief). His most recent book, Husbandry, is a collection of essays he wrote as the "Heart of a Husband" columnist at Ladies' Home Journal. His 2002 book The New Rabbi, which is in the news again since its main character Rabbi Wolpe recently died, was highly praised by the New York Times, Washington Post and Boston Globe and featured on "All Things Considered." It was chosen as one of the best books of the year by Publishers Weekly, which said, "Stephen Fried took what many would consider a mundane topic-a Jewish congregation searching for a new rabbi and turned it into a marvelous journalistic memoir that recorded his own spiritual development as well as a community's quest for leadership." It was named one of the year's top 10 books on religion and spirituality by beliefnet.com. Rabbi Gerald Wolpe who died on May 18, 2009 at the age of 81 was married to Dr. Arlene's cousin Elaine. Fried, writing about Wolpe’s death, said "American Jews lost one of our great sermonizers, one of our most fascinating and challenging pulpit leaders, and a renaissance rabbi whose dramatic life yielded several distinct acts, each with its own powerful teaching moments."

We are SO lucky to have a western doctor join us for another episode of our COVID-19: Perspective Series. Our intention with this series is to bring you unique conversations with people who bring different perspectives to the table about the current state of the world. Last week we spoke with Rabbi Wolpe and this week we are honored to have Dr. Stephanie, a Critical Care Pulmonologist who works in Portland, Oregon, with us on #DENtalksPodcast. If you want to know the nitty gritty details about the virus and how it’s affecting our health care system, this is the episode for you! Dr. Stephanie shares with us what her and her team have been experiencing over the last few months from when they first started to hear about the virus back in December 2019, to the care they are providing today. She discusses how the virus affects your lungs, how they are seeing universally low oxygen levels present in all patients who are hospitalized, debunks the use of Hydroxychloroquine as a “cure” to the virus, breaks down what happened in Italy and how by social distancing we are not stopping the virus in its tracks but we are helping the health care system get to a place where it can help those we are sick instead of being overwhelmed with mass numbers of people. This is an episode filled with HOPE and POSITIVITY as Dr. Stephanie shares with us how she feels we are in a much better position now than we were weeks ago, how new information is being discovered daily, how people are sharing information more openly than ever before in the medical field, and how hospital staff have banned together in an “all hands on deck” mentality to rework systems and volunteer extra time to be sure that everyone gets the care they need. She shares with us how she has seen nurses and doctors show an overwhelming amount of care and support to their patients and how she believes that this crisis is making us all realize the importance of community and that we are all much closer than we think. This is a very special look into the inner workings of today’s hospitals and how our healthcare system is fighting COVID-19!***We're offering ALL OUR CLASSES VIRTUALLY!
