Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

This week, the team takes on one of the biggest cinematic phenomena of the early '90s: The Bodyguard (1992). A film that smashed box office records, made slow dancing cool again, and somehow convinced us that a love story between a moody security expert and a petulant pop diva was cinema gold. On paper, this had it all: the biggest male movie star in the world, Kevin Costner and the most powerful voice on the planet, Whitney Houston, in her film debut. But does that combo equal instant classic, or is it just a glittery dumpster fire covered in hit singles?Whitey dives headfirst into the spectacle with a hard truth: this movie takes itself way too seriously. We're talking Oscar-level intensity… for what is essentially a Lifetime movie with a better budget. Of course, there's reverence for Costner—because who doesn't love a bit of 1990s mullet-lite Kev, fresh off Robin Hood, JFK, and Dances with Wolves? But even the biggest Costner fans on the panel can't deny that Frank Farmer spends the entire film doing his best impression of an emotionally constipated mannequin.Meanwhile, G-Man marvels at the soundtrack that saved the film from mediocrity. From “I Have Nothing” to the megaton that is “I Will Always Love You,” Houston's vocals are nothing short of breathtaking—and in the end, her voice gives the film its emotional punch. Damo finds himself emotionally moved by the final scene, where the music hits and we remember just how incredible Whitney was. Unfortunately, her performance as Rachel Marron doesn't land quite as well with the crew. Plot holes? Yep, we got ‘em. From inexplicable security failures (three guards for the world's biggest star?) to the mind-boggling moment where a would-be assassin uses a sniper rifle in a room full of Hollywood elites, the film is more Swiss cheese than suspense thriller. Not to mention the infamous scarf-on-the-sword scene, which leads the team to ponder whether a katana counts as foreplay and why no one, ever, draws a curtain in this movie. But The Bodyguard (1992) isn't without its joys. There's the epic needle drops, a lakeside cabin that Damo would happily disappear to forever, and a cast of cartoonishly awful background characters that you're almost rooting for the stalker. The guys also take a detour through Costner's post-Bodyguard career trajectory, which includes Waterworld, The Postman, and the underrated Draft Day.G-Man delivers his signature deep-dive into cast trivia, highlighting everything from Whitney's early gospel roots to her connection with Dionne Warwick, and even a surprise one-degree link to Kurt Russell via the late great Bill Cobbs. There's a healthy debate about whether The Bodyguard was a real movie or just a high-gloss showcase for a chart-topping soundtrack, and somehow, they still manage to rope in Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style, Inspector Gadget, and the concept of "vabbing" (yep, it's a thing now).Of course, no episode is complete without the Born to Watch signature segments. The boys dish up their Good, the Bad, and the Ugly—from the iconic knife throw scene and amazing set design, to the complete lack of chemistry between the leads and questionable career choices made by everyone involved. Gage Roads supplies the brews, and Johnny Bull returns with a zinger straight outta Aliens. Oh, and Work Experience Kid cops some heat for trying to bring up brassieres in the Snob's Report. Rookie move. So, was The Bodyguard (1992) a misunderstood masterpiece, or a pop-cultural relic best left in the '90s CD rack? There's only one way to find out. Plug in, turn up the volume, and get ready for the most musically dramatic episode Born to Watch has ever done.

Demolition Man is a 1993 American science fiction action film directed by Marco Brambilla in his directorial debut. It stars Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt, Denis Leary, Bill Cobbs, and Nigel Hawthorne. Stallone is John Spartan, a risk-taking police officer who has a reputation for causing destruction while carrying out his work. After a failed attempt to rescue hostages from evil crime lord Simon Phoenix (Snipes), they are both sentenced to be cryogenically frozen in 1996. Phoenix is thawed for a parole hearing in 2032, but escapes. Society has changed and all violent crime has seemingly been eliminated. Unable to deal with a criminal as dangerous as Phoenix, the authorities awaken Spartan to help capture him again. The story makes allusions to many other works including Aldous Huxley's 1932 dystopian novel Brave New World and H. G. Wells's The Sleeper Awakes.

The Dads continue to reel from the loss of Reegs, with this week's horrible take on STAND BY ME as well as Dan declining to tell his masturbation story being two particularly low points. Will they redeem themselves this week? I have literally no idea since I'm writing the notes before listening to the pod but I will assume not. Due to the whole being Jewish thing we didn't have a Christmas tree in our house though confusingly we did celebrate Christmas at my grandma's house on the day itself in what was an orgy of crass commercialism, a pattern that persists in my family to this day and which we are depressingly bound to perpetuate despite not wanting to and indeed expressly trying to avoid it. The Christmas Tree is of course the altar beneath which we lay evidence of our material success, by which I mean we put presents under the tree. We start this week show with the Top 5 Christmas Trees, a subject which completely failed to engage our listeners and I can tell you is not actually all that easy having given it a few minutes' worth of what might loosely be deemed 'thought'. There will no doubt be ELF, THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES and NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS VACATION as well as that insufferable dreck Dan forced us to watch last year, A CHRISTMAS STORY. If someone doesn't mention HOME ALONE, I'll be seething but I reckon I will be alright. THE HUDSUCKER PROXY is still a movie I haven't properly seen which makes this part of the notes that little bit harder. The Coen brother's 1994 comedy is one of Sidey's favourite movies, but it opened to lukewarm reviews with one critic deeming it "asinine and insufferable", a quote which I've lazily copied from Wikipedia. With a cast including Bill Cobbs, Bruce Campbell and Anna Nicole Smith acting alongside such cinematic lightweights as Paul Newman, Tim Robbins and Jennifer Jason Leigh, I'm looking forward to hearing the dad's take and a debate about whether this is a Christmas movie at all I'm assuming. OLD JACK'S BOAT is both the place where Howie lost his virginity and the name of a BBC children's tv series about a retired fisherman who lives in a village on the North Yorkshire coast. Bernard Cribbins tells stories to his dog. One of the dads said it made him cry in our WhatsApp group, but I still don't know if he meant tears of boredom and frustration or tears of joy at capturing moments of quiet, gentle beauty etched on the face of a national treasure. Isn't it exciting to find out? No.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

This week on Total Movie Recall, we acknowledge that The Wizard of Oz is, yes, a classic. However, it's missing a certain je ne sais quoi, and we try to put our fingers on exactly what it needed. We conclude that classic, whimsical children's film needed more childhood lobotomy, forced imprisonment, Queens pulling their own heads off, and Veruca Salt. Or Fairuza Balk? Potato potato. Decarceration Nation (with Josh and Joel)

Josh and Joel talk about the effect Suboxone smuggling has on prison mail across the United States. I felt the 14th episode, where I interview Michigan's gubernatorial candidate Bill Cobbs was symbolically important. I can't imagine that many Gubernatorial candidates have sat down for an hour-long podcast interview with a formerly incarcerated registered citizen. Thanks to Mr. Cobbs for a great discussion and for his political courage. There are lots of conflicting stories about how the Suboxone strip came to be. From what I can discern, Invidior was trying to protect its patent by changing from pill to strip. There is a difference between llow-level (Suboxone) opiates and low-level opiates (Heroin etc.). The end result of Suboxone being released in strip form has been a mail crisis in America's prisons and jails. There is persuasive evidence that America's War on Drugs has failed at its main goal (reducing the supply of drugs) since 1971 and that imprisonment is a poor indicator of drug war success. The basic idea of Harm Reduction is that we should target our responses to drug and addiction problems to reducing negative outcomes. Needle exchanges work, they just do. Luckily, at least one jurisdiction is implementing them. The MDOC mail policy is really complicated and hard to follow (trust me, I have tried to follow it many times). Many of us believe that getting mail is a really important thing to the restoration of incarcerated folks, luckily for us, the Supreme Court of the United States agrees. There are scanners available that can detect Suboxone. So far, the MDOC argues they can't afford the scanners at every location (which is why we argue for centralization of facilities) and also argues the scanners don't detect all drugs (but they do detect Suboxone which is what caused the change in mail policy).

Decarceration Nation (with Josh and Joel)

A recent interview between Michigan Gubernatorial Candidate Bill Cobbs and Josh about criminal justice reform in Michigan. If you are not familiar with what is going on with water in Michigan. The State approved Nestle's new contract to remove even more water from the Great Lakes, Flint had State supplied water suspended while the Flint school's were and are still testing high for lead and we discussed Detroit's ongoing water crisis. The crisis in public schools in Michigan accelerated after the onset of the so-called "school choice" reforms in Michigan. Abandoned houses and how to deal with them is a huge issue in Detroit. Michigan is one of five states in America that has not raised the age to ensure that 17-year-olds are not presumptively tried as adults. I am a volunteer at MCCD who are working to Raise the Age in Michigan. Michigan passed a number of mental health reforms recently, including diversion programs, but mental health care inside our jails and prisons still lags far behind. The Suboxone issue and the resulting changes in the mail policies at the Michigan Department of Correction have caused massive problems with families of inmates. The new mail policy is complicated and hard to comply with. Cash bail is a pretty large problem all over the United States. Tens of thousands of people are arrested in America every day and every one of them will likely stay in jail unless they can afford to pay bail. Jails, particularly certain jails in Michigan, are very dangerous. Video Visitation has been replacing in-person visits all over the country, we are experiencing this problem, for instance, at the Washtenaw County jail which no longer allows in-person visits. It is important to remember that the service provider incentivizes jails to shut down in-person visits by ensuring that jails get a cut of any profits from video visits. Criminal justice fines & fees can be excessive and are applied liberally to virtually every person in jail or prison in Michigan. Thanks again to Mr. Cobbs for such an open and fascinating discussion about the need for criminal justice reform in Michigan.
