The No. 1 Penn State wrestling team is ready to close out the dual meet portion of its schedule on Friday when it hosts EIWA program American on Friday night at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions are fresh off clinching a Big Ten regular season title and are gearing up for the postseason. We cover that and much more in this week's BWI wrestling show and pocast.Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start this episode with a review of the team's two most recent wins. Last Friday night, Penn State beat Ohio State 27-13 in Columbus to secure its 69th consecutive dual meet victory. Then, it topped Illinois 29-9 on Sunday to set a Big Ten record with 70 straight wins in addition to winning the conference's dual meet crown. Carr and Pickel discuss the top takeaways, including Beau Bartlett beating Jesse Mendez to earn the No. 1 spot at 141 pounds, freshman Luke Lilledahl bouncing back from being pinned Friday night to record a technical fall triumph on Sunday, and the latest injury information. From there, the show turns its attention to what lies ahead for the Nittany Lions. Sanderson said that the program is dealing with some illness issues, which could impact Friday night's lineup. This year's senior class includes the likes of Bartlett, four-time NCAA champ Carter Starocci, and defending heavyweight champ Greg Kerkvliet, among others.

Penn State wrestling is off and running with the February portion of its schedule. The Nittany Lions have their first double dual weekend of the season on the horizon. Michigan battles head coach Cael Sanderson's team at the Bryce Jordan Center on Friday (6 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network) before Maryland invades Rec Hall at 1 p.m. ET on B1G+.“It's unusual, as we talked about throughout the year, just the scheduling where we got Friday, Friday, Friday, and now we have a Friday, Sunday,” Sanderson said Monday. “But I think these weekends are really good training for the national tournament conference where you have a multiple-day tournament. So, we look at it all as training. And obviously, Michigan's one of the top programs in the country. So we're looking forward to that match, another match in the Jordan Center, and then being able to kind of turn around and wrestle Maryland, who's wrestling really well. I mean, they've done a really good job there, and they've been very competitive.”We cover those matches and much more on this week's Blue-White Illustrated Penn State wrestling show. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start the conversation with the latest news from the recruiting world. The nation's top Class of 2026 recruit, Bo Bassett, picked Iowa over the Nittany Lions and others on Tuesday night.

It returns to the mat this weekend to host Wyoming. We look back at the latest win and ahead to the next matchup on this week's Nittany Lions wrestling show from Blue-White Illustrated.Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start this episode with top takeaways from the victory over the Mountain Hawks. Penn State won nine of 10 bouts. Freshman Luke Lilledahl had a highlight win over Lehigh's Sheldon Seymour at 125 pounds while sophomore Josh Barr beat former Nittany Lion and Lehigh senior Michael Beard by major decision at 197 pounds. What did those results tell us about the outlook for each young Nittany Lion moving forward? Carr and Pickel discuss. Then, they break down what sophomore Braeden Davis' 4-2 to loss to No. 1 Mountain Hawk Ryan Crookham at 133 pounds tells us about where he is at in his new weight class at this early stage of the season. They close out that portion of the show by looking at whether or not the Penn State starting lineup is set in stone yet or not. From there, the conversation turns to this weekend's opponent, Wyoming. The Cowboys and Nittany Lions will meet for the first time. The dual, which is at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, is now at the Bryce Jordan Center. It moved there from Rec Hall due ot the fact that a women's volleyball postseason event is now being held at the usual home of Nittany Lion wrestling.#PennState  #NittanyLions  JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationGet the 2024 Penn State Football Preview Magazine at https://bit.ly/PSU24PreviewBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters:  https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State Wrestling Show: Surprise BJC Dual, Preview of Wyoming

An all-new episode of the Penn State Wrestling Show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! The Nittany Lions sit one month away from starting their 2024-2025 regular season with Drexel on Nov. 17 at Rec Hall. Of course, there is plenty for host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel to cover in the leadup to that. This week's episode starts with a look at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Defending 285-pound NCAA champion Greg Kerkvliet, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at heavyweight, was set to face No. 3 Nick Feldman of Ohio State on Nov. 16 at Rec Hall. However, Iowa State announced Wednesday that its own heavyweight, No. 6 Yonger Bastida, would be facing Feldman instead. Flo Wrestling, which runs the event, quietly updated its bout sheet to reflect that the Cyclone is replacing Kerkvliet but has otherwise said nothing about the sudden change.Last year, Clay Clarson of South Dakota State was scratched from the exhibition event, sat out the first six weeks of the season due to injury, and was never right during the 2023-2024 season. Conversely, Levi Haines and Jacori Teemer also both scratched off of last year's original Classic bout sheet. But, they both wrestled all year, and Haines beat Teemer, then of Iowa and now of Arizona State, in the NCAA finals. But, they withdrew after the Journeymen Classic, not before. With all of that said, PSU posted a photo of Kerkvliet wrestling hours before this news broke. And, he has been frequently featured on the team's social media account. With no concrete news to share on Kerkvliet's status moving forward, Pickel and Carr discuss what it all might mean moving forward.

A dear friend who lives in the heartland of America shared with me some amusing thoughts given by a child upon his return home from spending the Christmas holidays with his grandparents in Arizona.A child's view of retirement and a mobile home park. After Christmas break, the teacher asked her small pupils how they spent their holiday. One little boys reply went like this:We always spend Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma. They used to live up here in a big brick house. But grandpa got cold and they moved to Arizona. They live in a park with a lot of other old people. They all live in tin huts. They ride golf carts that are too big for me. They all go to a building they call The Rec Hall. It is fixed now. They all do exercises, but not very well. They play a game with big checkers and push them around on the floor with sticks. There's a swimming pool, but I guess nobody teaches them. They just stand there in the water with their hats on. My grandma used to bake cookies for me, but nobody cooks there. They all go to restaurants that are fast and have discounts. When you come into the park, there is a doll house with a man sitting in it. He watches all day so they can't get out without him seeing them. I guess everybody forgets who they are because they all wear badges with their names on them. Some of them don’t hear very well. They could hear better if they took the button out of their ears. Grandma says grandpa worked hard all of his life to earn this mansion. I wish they would move back home but I guess the man in the doll house won't let them out.Warm thought: Laugh a little. Laugh a little more. Blessings in this new year!Warm Thoughts from the Little Home on the Prairie Over a Cup of Tea by Luetta G. There’s been 10 straight days of Short Time Shots. This is National Podcast Post Month, which is kinda like National Novel Writing Month. NaPodPoMo as compared to NaNoWriMo. The goal is to put out a podcast a day for the month of November. This is part of the reason Short Time Shots came back. The season’s here, it started on November 1 and there’s wrestling news virtually every day. What’s going to make this suck is Thanksgiving, but I’ll figure something out. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores in more from the world of wrestling, I’m sore from the trampoline park, I’m installing flooring now in the studio, and most importantly, I’m your soundtrack, Jason Bryant.   Dual Meets:  No. 1 Penn State extended its win streak to 60 in a row with a 45-0 shutout of Navy in front of a sold out crowd at Rec Hall. Penn State picked up six bonus victories, including falls from Mark Hall at 174 pounds and Anthony Cassar at heavyweight. As far as ranked wins go, top-ranked Vincenzo Joseph teched No. 11 Tanner Skidgel at 165, while Hall decked Spencer Carey in just under a minute. It was the 49th straight sellout at home for Penn State. The 60 in a row is the eighth-longest dual meet win streak in college wrestling history. It’s the fifth longest in major college wrestling history.  The three longest active streaks in college wrestling are Grand View’s 76 in a row in the NAIA, St. Cloud State’s 51 in a row in Division II, which is just three away from tying their own Division II record and Penn State’s 60 in Division I.  Ohio State debuted their new arena with some style as the third-ranked Buckeyes chopped down Stanford 29-6 in Columbus. The Covelli Center was abuzz as Ohio State won nine out of 10 bouts, including Luke Pletcher’s cardiac win over Stanford freshman Real Woods in sudden victory at 141. At 157, Elijah Cleary recovered from being rode for about 15 minutes to rally to force sudden victory and beat Tyler Eischens. Stanford’s only win came by fall at 165 as Shane Griffith stuck Ethan Smith. Kollin Moore went Hulk Smash on Nathan Traxler.  In the first Mound on the Mat dual held at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park, No. 11 Virginia Tech got a major decision at heavyweight to push past No. 21 Northwestern 21-18. John Borst’s major decision over Jack Heyob closed out the dual, which was a 5-5 split between the teams. Northwestern’s Sebastian Rivera, a two-time All-American at 125, was up at 133 and majored Collin Gerardi 13-4 as the dual went back and forth but bonus points was also the theme as six of the 10 bouts had bonus wins. Mitch Moore went yard after pinning Jack Tolin at 141 pounds, but Yahya Thomas of Northwestern fired right back with a major over Brent Moore at 149. Northwestern’s Ryan Deakin and Virginia Tech’s David McFadden traded majors at 157 and 165. Hunter Bolen earned a huge major decision over Jack Jessen at 184. Lucas Davison, fresh off a Junior world silver, stopped Stan Smeltzler 5-3 at 197 to give the Wildcats their last lead. Borstyman then finished it off for the Hokies on a sunny and mild November afternoon. Play Ball! Army West Point went 2-0 at the inaugural Chattanooga Duals. The Black Knights beat host Chattanooga 18-12 as Alex Hopkins and Bobby Heald closed out the Mocs with wins at 197 and 285, while it was the opposite against Illinois as the Black Knights built a 19-6 lead after seven matches and cruised. Illinois beat host Chattanooga 22-10. Campbell evened its record at 1-1 with a 24-16 win over host Ohio on Sunday. At 133 pounds, the top matchup of the day saw Mario Guillen of Ohio top Noah Gonser of Campbell. Matthew Dallara of Campbell picked up a solid win over Zac Carson at 157, while Andrew Morgan picked up another major decision at 184. My wife and I started a re-watch of sorts with The Office last night, so we close out the dual portion of the episode with the Electric City Duals, hosted by Scranton. The host Royals went 4-0 and beat Middlesex Community College 45-3, Oneonta State 19-16, Rowan College of Gloucester, which used to be known as Gloucester County, 25-24, and Lackawanna College 35-18. Toby, NO! Tournaments:  Top notes from the DefenseSoap/Journeymen Collegiate Classic were Dom Demas of Oklahoma pinning Nebraska’s Chad Red at 141, Arizona State’s Josh Maruca lost three times on the day to finish sixth in his pool at 149, the pool was won by Nebraska’s Colin Purinton, who’s like a 10th year senior. This guy has been around forever, but he wrestled well. Isaiah White of Nebraska beat Josh Shields of Arizona State 6-1 in a battle of All-Americans at 165 pounds. All-American Jordan Kutler of Lehigh beat All-American Mikey Labriola of Nebraska 4-1 to claim the title at 174 in Pool A. At 184 pounds, a late score by returning national champion Zahid Valencia lifted him to his pool title over Nebraska All-American Taylor Venz and Utah Valley heavyweight Tate Orndorff probably had the best day, beating All-Americans Tanner Hall of Arizona State and Jordan Wood of Lehigh to claim the A bracket at 285 pounds.  The big result at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open at Binghamton was Lou DePrez of the host squad knocking off All-American Ben Darmstadt of Cornell, who was returning to the mats after a year away due to injury - and coming down a weight in the process.   Harold Nichols Cyclone Open: Nine of the 10 titles were won by athletes from schools in the state of Iowa. Iowa State had four champs, as did Northern Iowa. Grand View also had an individual champion - all of that from the open division. The one non-Iowa school to pick up a title was Drew Scharenbrock at 157 - he’s from Wisconsin. Among the better finals, Northern Iowa’s Max Thomsen knocked off Iowa State’s Jarrett Degan 12-7 at 149 in a battle of All-Americans. Bryce Steiert’s move up to 174 has been so far so good for UNI. Steiert beat Iowa State’s Marcus Coleman 6-0 in the finals there. The move up was also good for UNI’s Taylor Lujan, who defeated Sam Colbray of Iowa State 7-5 in the finals at 184. Grand View’s Tyree Sutton beat Northern Iowa’s Tyrell Gordon 3-1 in the finals to give the NAIA a champ at the event at 197.  Some solid Arizona State true freshmen won titles - Nick Raimo at 125, Trey Munoz at 174 and Cohlton Schultz at heavyweight. Three notable titles were won by Northern Colorado Bears: Mosha Schwartz at 133, Andrew Alirez at 149 and Alan Clothier at 184. Last week, we told you about Boise State alum Ben VomBaur wrestling with his sons, Will and Vance at the Cowboy Open. Well, he did most of that again, wrestling with his son Will at the event. This time, they both took third. VomBaur was a two-time All-American at Boise State in 2002 and 2003. So he’s close to 40.  Cleveland State won six titles at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open, with the most notable coming at 141 pounds as Evan Cheek knocked off Drew Mattin of Michigan in the semifinals and then beat younger brother Cole Mattin in the finals. Ohio State won three weights as Carson Kharchla, Rocky Jordan and Gavin Hoffman won their weights. The only non-Ohio State or Cleveland State champion was Mercyhurst heavyweight Jacob Robb.  On the women’s side, Emmanuel captured six titles at the East Stroudsburg Open, while first-year Presbyterian won three weights.  Bakersfield College won California’s Southeast Conference tournament, outdistancing second-place West Hills.  PROMO CODE WARNING There are approximately 63 active wrestling podcasts out there, with 20 of them on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. Today, we’re going to teach poodles how to fly.  FROM THE DWN: In many situations during the season, much of what you hear about in the scores above will be in the daily wrestling newsletter, so I won’t repeat items that are included here that I’ve mentioned above.  The Mankato Free Press follows past Division II national champion Jason Rhoten from Minnesota State-Mankato as he’s hunting elk in Montana.  Omaha.com with the biggest banner ad I’ve ever seen. It’s like the guy in the business meeting who thinks he’s big on Emeril and goes, BOOM, take it to the next level. What up Nate Schy! It was in yesterday’s newsletter, but I’ll mention it again here as Tim Hands of FivePointMove.com liked his chat with Minnesota Storm Greco-Roman coach Dan Chandler so much, that he posted

Did Anyone Really Win in Daton Fix vs Nick Suriano? This weekend was filled with exciting collegiate match ups. With streaming and broadcasting services the availability of watching these duals are at your fingertips. This wasn't a reality a short time ago when it was hard to find live college wrestling. One of the highly anticipated wrestling matches this weekend was between Oklahoma State's Daton Fix and Rutgers' Nick Suriano. These two have a deep history growing up in New Jerse. They also hold claim to one of the most talked about high school matches of all time. This weekends matchup followed theme with the match lasting 34 minutes. The match actually lasted even longer than that if you include all of the time spent reviewing by the officials. Ben Askren isn't surprised that every time these two meet it goes this way due to their similar high-pressure styles. The bout finally came to a controversial close with Fix serving Suriano his first loss of the season 3-2 due to a hands-to-the-face call. Askren is excited to see Fix and Suriano wrestle other top-ranked opponents but not each other due to the way their styles match up.Kaden Gfeller vs Anthony AshnaultAskren feels Kaden Gfeller vs Anthony Ashnault was the most exciting match of the Oklahoma State vs Rutgers dual. Gfeller fell to Ashnault 9-6. Askren thinks Gfeller is losing to these top guys because he struggles to generate enough of his own offense. After the win, Ashnault celebrated by doing the pistol fingers at Gfeller. Gfeller then pushes Ashnault at the handshake and both sides got a one-point deduction as a result.Patrick Glory vs Nick PiccininniGlory vs Piccininni was another exciting match this weekend. Glory lost to Piccininni with a final score of 9-4. Askren begs Glory to stop choosing bottom until he gets better. Glory has the potential to place 3rd at the NCAA Finals which would be a remarkable achievement considering the competition and Glory's age.Nick Lee vs Tristan MoranWisconsin's Tristan Moran went to Rec Hall and gave Penn State's Nick Lee his first loss of the season in second sudden victory 12-10. This was a huge upset not only in the rankings but also Moran has been struggling with his weight at the 141 lbs weight class.Jason Nolf vs Ryan DeakinNolf was able to stop all the chatter surrounding his bout with Deakin with a 17-7 major decision victory. Askren talks about how many people believed No. 3 ranked Deakin was the guy to finally beat Nolf. It will be exciting to watch the rest of Nolf's season.Austin Desanto vs Ethan LizakThe final score of 6-1 doesn't tell the story of how dominant No. 10 Desanto was against No. 8 Lizak. Desanto, at the end of the match, shoved Lizak’s head into the mat and then started taunting the crowd. Askren is always in favor of celebrations and showmanship and didn't really have a problem with what happened after the match.

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY! (I made this part up on the fly) This is Short Time Shots, a comically unfunny wrestling podcast aimed at giving you, the wrestling fan, everything you need to know about the day’s happenings in college wrestling. I’m your host Jason Bryant, and here’s something about me, November 11 marks the 10-year anniversary of my first ever podcast. That was called Wrestling 411 with my co-host Kyle Klingman. I’ll actually break that historic show down later this month as Kyle and I talk about that doomed but life-changing project and its impact on wrestling, whether you remember it or not. Speaking of things people wouldn’t rather remember - and I’m talking about our friends in Kent, Ohio. No. 1 Penn State won its 46th dual in a row as the Nittany Lions blasted Kent State 52-3 at sold-out Rec Hall. After dropping the first match at 125 pounds, Penn State reeled off nine straight bonus victories, including six falls in a row, to trounce the Golden Flashes, who wrestled without returning All-American Kyle Conel at 197 pounds. The debut of Roman Bravo-Young was sound as the true freshman from Arizona registered his first collegiate fall over Tim Rooney at 133. Just two days earlier, Rooney lost a tough one to Iowa’s Austin DeSanto in a dual at Kent State. What impressed me the most about Bravo-Young was his top work. He good. We use that F-word a lot around Penn State - Fun. Love them or hate them, Penn State is freaking fun to watch - probably not that fun to wrestle, though. No. 5 Michigan opened up its dual season with a 32-12 win over rival Central Michigan up in Mount Pleasant, a result leaving Bloodround’s Kevin Claunch torn to his core. Big Wolverine bonus wins were registered by Stevan Micic at 133, Kanen Storr at 141, Malik Amine at 149, Logan Massa at 165 and Myles Amine at 174. We did NOT see Mason Parris at heavyweight, as an FYI. No football-like comebacks for ODU on the wrestling mats on Sunday. A day after its football team rallied from a 28-0 deficit to beat North Texas, ODU’s wrestling team fell behind 18-0 … and it got worse as No. 7 Missouri continued its dominance over the Monarchs as the Tigers rolled into the Ted Constant Convocation Center and topped ODU 40-3 in an early-season MAC contest. The match which saw the most eyes came at 141 pounds where a pair of All-Americans tangled. It was Missouri’s Jaydin Eierman who came away with the W, pinning Eastern Michigan transfer Sa’Derian Perry in 5:05. Missouri also picked up bonus wins at 125, 133, 165, 174 and 197 pounds to roll. At the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, a big crowd saw No. 11 Arizona State top No. 19 South Dakota State 30-9 in the dual meet coaching debut for Damion Hahn of SDSU. Nothing really unexpected here. The dual’s two returning NCAA champions, Seth Gross of South Dakota State and Zahid Valencia of Arizona State both scored falls for their respective teams. The bout that was probably of the most interest in terms of a potential toss up went Arizona State’s way at 149 pounds where Josh Maruca topped Henry Pohlmeyer 5-3. ASU All-Americans Ryan Millhof and Josh Shields won big as well. No. 24 North Carolina opened up its season with a 23-10 over Chattanooga. The Mocs jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after the first three weights, highlighted by Chris Debien’s 10-5 win over A.C. Headlee at 141. After that, it was all Tar Heels as Coleman Scott’s squad swept the last seven bouts. Buffalo went 3-0 in sweeping a quad hosted by Bucknell on Sunday. The Bulls topped VMI 34-5, Cleveland State 34-6 and host Bucknell 25-12. It wasn’t smooth sailing the entire time for coach John Stutzman’s team as Bucknell did steal a few bouts. At 125 pounds, Geo Barzona knocked off Buffalo’s Kyle Akins 5-4, while Bucknell 157-pounder Zach Hartman upended Alex Smythe, who was trending upwards in the eyes of many after his rapid improvement. VMI’s Neal Richards went 3-0 in his three bouts at 174 pounds. In the Big 12, Fresno State cruised by Northern Colorado 34-4 before they headed south down I-25 and were greeted by an Air Force team that wasn’t going to let them do the Colorado D1 double. Air Force beat Fresno State 19-15 with the swing victory coming in overtime at 174 where Air Force’s Randy Meneweather beat the Bulldogs’ Ricky Padilla 3-1 in sudden victory. Iowa State opened up its dual slate with a 37-3 win over SIU Edwardsville. Impressive performances turned in by Austin Gomez at 133 as he earned a first-period technical fall. Ian Parker and Marcus Coleman added falls for the Cyclones at 141 and 174 pounds. In Division II, No. 6 Pitt-Johnstown topped No. 5 Wheeling Jesuit 19-15 in Wheeling. Fifth-ranked Levi Niebauer picked up a major decision at 197 pounds the put the bout out of reach and gave coach Pat Pecora his 583rd dual meet victory. Yes, he’s in his 43rd year at the helm. Central Oklahoma gave up the first and last wins of the dual and thumped NAIA Oklahoma City 34-6. Oklahoma City head coach Sam Hazewinkel, the dual threat World and Olympic teamer spent the last two seasons prior as an assistant coach at Central Oklahoma. In Division III, Muhlenberg won the Electric City Duals at Scranton going 4-0. The MULES beat host Scranton, Keystone, Lackawanna and the club team from Temple. No idea whether or not there were any Man in the High Castle references at the event. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Watch Season 3 on Amazon Prime. Going back to New York as the round-robin style Journeymen Collegiate Classic took place a day after the Northeast Duals. Some of the top results saw Lehigh’s Nick Farro knock off Oklahoma’s Christian Moody 3-2 at 125 pounds. Lehigh’s Brandon Paetzell beat Wyoming All-American Montorie Bridges in pool competition, then fell to Purdue’s Ben Thornton 5-1 in the final at that particular weight class pairing. Oklahoma’s Dom Demas had a solid outing at 141 pounds, beating Lock Haven’s Kyle Shoop, Wyoming’s Sam Turner and Purdue’s Nate Limmex. Not too shabby, especially as he got the fall over Limmex at 1:38. NC State’s Justin Oliver topped Davion Jeffries of Oklahoma 7-2 in the A-Bracket final at 149 pounds. Army West Point’s Luke Weiland emerged at 157’s A bracket. Weiland topped Oklahoma’s Justin Thomas 9-0 in the final. Thomas defeated Appalachian State’s Matt Zovitoski and Utah Valley’s Grant LaMont in his side of the pool. Lock Haven All-American Chance Marsteller beat Wyoming’s Branson Ashworth 7-4 in the A-bracket final at 165 pounds. Lehigh’s Jordan Kutler beat Purdue’s Dylan Lydy 3-1 at 174. NC State’s Nick Reenan’s return to folkstyle wrestling was successful one. He topped Lehigh’s Ryan Preisch 5-1 in the top bracket final at 184 pounds. Army West Point’s Rocco Caywood had a win over Lehigh’s Chris Weiler in the pool competition before knocking off NC State’s Malik McDonald 4-2 to claim the title at 197 pounds. Lehigh’s Jake Jakobsen won the B bracket at the weight and 197 is shaping up to be real interesting at Lehigh already this year. Lehigh heavyweight Jordan Wood topped Utah Valley’s Tate Orndorff 6-0 in the final at 285 pounds. Orndorff had a solid 6-5 win over Lock Haven’s Thomas Haines in pool competition. At the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open up in Binghamton where the Bearcats program is celebrating its 50th wrestling anniversary, Cornell was strong to quite strong. At 133, Chaz Tucker beat Vitali Arujau 7-5 in an all-Big Red Final. At 157, Josh Humphreys of Lehigh came away with three falls, a tech and a major on his way to the title. Two of those wins were over NCAA qualifiers Hunter Ladnier of Harvard and Mike D’Angelo, wrestling unattached for Princeton. Brown’s Jonathan Viruet majored George Mason’s Colston DiBlasi 11-0 in the finals at 165 pounds. NC State’s Trent Hidlay knocked off All-American Brandon Womack of Cornell in the second round, then beat Penn State’s Mason Manville in the semifinals en route to the title at 174 pounds. Pretty good starting weekend for the true freshman. Other notable winners were Brown’s Christian LaFragola at 197 and George Mason’s Matt Voss at 285. At the Ohio Intercollegiate Open, the Ohio State Buckeyes pretty much dominated the field. Well, there isn’t too much pretty much, it was dominating. There were a lot of OSU wrestle-offs in the finals. Rather than go through all of them, here’s the notables. Micah Jordan topped teammate Sammy Sasso 9-7 in the final at 149 pounds. Ke-Shawn Hayes won at 157, topping Elijah Cleary 6-5. Cleary upended Michigan’s Will Lewan 3-1 in sudden victory in the semifinals. People notice since Lewan topped teammate Alec Pantaelo last week at the Michigan State Open. Ethan Smith topped teammate TeShan Campbell 8-5 in the finals at 174. More Ohio State stuff happened with titles at 184 with Gavin Hoffman winning, Chase Singletary won at 285. Singletary defeated Mason Parris of Michigan in the semis and beat D2 All-American Kam Teacher of Notre Dame College. It's Friday, you ain't got … well, this show is pretty much safe for work, so while I could throw lines from the movie Friday at you for hours on end, we'll just stick to the scores and more from a great night of wrestling. That's right folks, you can only quote Friday if you've seen it, and I seen it! I even have it on VHS. What's that got to do with wrestling? Nothing, but here's your rundown from January 19, 2018 -- I'm Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant -- and this is how you start off your Saturday morning. Top-ranked Penn State blitzed No. 24 Purdue in front of another sellout Rec Hall crowd on Friday. Purdue got up early after Penn State had a rare forfeit at 125 pounds. PSU sports info reported that both eligible 125-pounders were sick and weren't in any shape to compete. That'd be the only W Purdue would get. The murderer's row of five NCAA champions swept 149 through 184 with three falls, a technical fall and a major. It might not be a stretch to say this might be the best 1-2-3-4-5 punch in the history of college wrestling -- and I don't subscribe to hyperbole. We all know this -- they're so freaking fun to watch. Missouri improved to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in the MAC with a 29-6 win over No. 17 Central Michigan. The win clinched the regular season title in the MAC for the Tigers, who won eight out of 10 including an upset win by Canten Marriott over Jordan Ellingwood at 184. Grant Leeth upended All-American Justin Oliver 3-1 at 149 pounds -- quite the recovery from a guy who many thought might not wrestle again after continued injuries. Couple matches of note in fifth-ranked Oklahoma State's 29-6 Big 12 win over West Virginia -- Nick Piccininni topped Zeke Moisey 4-0 at 125 pounds while 197-pound All-American Preston Weigel beat the ageless Jake Smith 5-2 at 197 pounds. Jake Smith … been wrestling at West Virginia since Millard Fillmore was President. Sixth-ranked NC State opened up ACC competition beating host Duke 32-6. Best result there was at 157 pounds where Hayden Hidlay topped Mitch Finesilver 10-5. Overall, Duke's tandem twins combined to go 2-2. Yes, there are four Finesilvers in the lineup and they are two different sets of twins -- and yes, they're brothers. The People's Champ Jacob Kasper beat Malik McDonald at heavyweight 8-6 for one of Duke's two wins. No. 8 Michigan topped Wisconsin 29-10, but that one had a couple of head-scratchers -- the biggest at 157 where Andrew Crone of Wisconsin knocked off All-American Alec Pantaleo 3-0. This was coming off Malik Amine's big fall over Cole Martin at 149. Hunter Ritter picked off All-American Kevin Beazely 3-2 at 197 pounds. No Logan Massa, but we did see Evan Wick tech Justin Hughes at 165. Adam Coon spent 41 seconds on the mat. No. 12 Cornell took advantage of two missing Lehigh starters and picked off the No. 7 Mountain Hawks 23-14. Individually, Cornell was powered by Yianni Diakomihalis, who earned an 8-0 major decision over Luke Karam at 141 and Ben Darmstadt, who pinned Jake Jakobsen at 2:36 of the first period. Lehigh still without Scotty Parker and Ryan Preisch, but you wrestle with who you got. No. 16 Rutgers picked up a 37-9 victory in the RAC over Hofstra. The Scarlet Knights improved to 5-3 on the season and picked up seven bonus victories in front of 3,139. Hofstra heavyweight Michael Hughes picked up his weight-class leading 13th fall of the season. Taylor Venz victory at 184 was enough to give Nebraska a 18-17 criteria victory at Northwestern. No. 25 North Carolina opened up ACC competition by rallying past Virginia 24-15. The Cavaliers jumped ahead with back-to-back falls at 125 and 133, including Jack Mueller pinning Zach Sherman at 133. The Tar Heels swept the last four weights, including a major decision from Ethan Ramos at 174 pounds over Will Schany. Ramos hadn't been in the lineup since the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Old Dominion won three out of four overtime matches to scrap out a deceptively close 22-9 win over Buffalo in the MAC. Michael McGee, Luke Drugac and Antonio Agee all won matches with takedowns in the extra period. Michigan State beat Indiana 18-15 in the Big Ten. Moving on. Northern Colorado heavyweight Robert Winters picked up a win in sudden victory over Spencer Empey to give Troy Nickerson's Bears a 21-20 win over Cal Poly. Northern Colorado won the bonus battle with three majors and a fall compared to just two bonus wins by the Mustangs. In EIWA action, Bucknell, which is a bit of a walking wounded team right now, wrestled well and picked off Harvard 21-10. Best match there was Tyler Smith's 8-2 win at 141 pounds over A.J. Jaffe. Keeping it in the EIWA, Navy won the last five matches to surge past American 22-9. In Division II, top-ranked St. Cloud State headed west to Minot and picked up a 32-6 win over Minot State to improve to 13-0 on the season. Notre Dame College thrashed West Liberty 36-7. Out in Colorado, we had a couple of Rocky Mountain duals to take in -- Western State Colorado beat Colorado School of Mines -- that's MINES, not MIMES. If they were mimes, they wouldn't be yelling from the bench. Anyway, the Mountaineers beat the Orediggers -- yup, Orediggers -- 34-9 while Colorado State-Pueblo beat Colorado Mesa 24-18 in a dual between schools that used to be known as Southern Colorado and Mesa State. Google it. Sixth-ranked Upper Iowa got past scrappy Minnesota State 18-12. Big win to help the Peacocks get past the No. 22 Mavericks was Nick Baumler's win over nationally ranked Matt Blome at 197. Minnesota State's Andrew McFall upset Upper Iowa's Maleek Williams 8-1 at 125. In Division III -- Centenary won its first dual of the year, beating Garden State rival TCNJ -- that's THE College of New Jersey -- 24-15. In case you didn't know, TCNJ used to be known as Trenton State. York -- the one in Pennsylvania -- beat Johns Hopkins and Elizabethtown beat Gettysburg. The last few months, we’ve gone with more of an interview-style show, and that’s how I’m going to keep it for the time being. I’ll still provide some updates of the happenings in wrestling, but they’ll be on the Monday and Friday shows. If you’re new to the podcast, and you’re here by simply hitting that play button, I’d encourage you to head over to mattalkonline.com/getshorttime to subscribe to the podcast with iTunes. It’s the easiest way to get this show with news, reviews, previews and interviews.Today we’ll talk with former James Madison head wrestling coach Jeff “Peanut” Bowyer, who’s the event director for the Matsplosion wrestling event coming to King of Prussia, Pennsylvania on Nov. 14-16. Before we get to Peanut -- yes, they still call him Peanut, we’ll run down a few happenings on the mats on Thursday, November 6.Three ranked teams were in action on the Division I level with two of them squaring off at McComb Fieldhouse in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Former EWL rivals now in different conferences, it was 14th-ranked Pittsburgh upending 10th-ranked Edinboro 25-13. Dom Forys, a true freshman from North Allegheny, that’s the same high school as Jake Herbert, Ray Brinzer and Teague Moore – had a solid 6-0 win over 19th-ranked Korey Mines at 125. Edinboro would take the lead after a fall by A.J. Schopp anda major decision by Mitchell Port. Pittsburgh’s Edgar Bright didn’t step to the mat at 141. The Panthers were also without All-American Tyler Wilps at 174. Edinboro wrestled without All-American David Habat and freshman heavyweight Billy Miller. The key match down the stretch came at 184 pounds where fifth-ranked Max Thomusseit defeated 10th-ranked Vic Avery 10-5. Heading into heavyweight down 19-13, Edinboro needed a fall from Warren Bosch to send the dual to criteria. Bosch jumped out early on John Rizzo and while he was trying to turn late in the second period, Rizzo reversed Bosch to his back and quickly settled in for the fall to cement the upset. At Grace Hall in Bethlehem, Pa. 15th-ranked Lehigh had a vastly different look in a 24-9 win over Hofstra. Four new faces won matches, including true freshman Dylan Milonas at 157, Central Florida transfer Santiago Martinez at 165, Cornell transfer Marshall Peppelman at 174 and true freshman Scotty Parker at 125 – Shout out to R.P. Norley and those Pennridge Rams. At 184, Nathaniel Brown looked strong coming off his redshirt year, teching Jermaine John in the second period.Lehigh will face Penn State at Rec Hall on Sunday. Hofstra falls to 1-1.In Division II, 16th-ranked Upper Iowa rolled past Truman and NAIA Waldorf. Also in the NAIA, Central Baptist topped Arkansas Baptist 33-18.Now we’ll talk MATSPLOSION with the Executive Vice President of Level2Sports, Peanut Bowyer.
