4 Tips to Avoid Blogger Burnout

Side Hustle Teachers

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2022 14:30

Burnout is nothing to joke about. It's real and it is vicious. Blogger burnout has derailed many potential entrepreneurs and we don't want that to happen to you. The good news is that you can avoid this all-too-common phenomenon with a little planning, and a lot of self-monitoring. Here are 4 tips to maintain a healthy schedule and avoid burnout: Start as You Intend to Continue We all know that when you first start a new venture you want to throw your whole self into it. This is normal, and honestly, it's part of the fun of starting something new. When starting a long-term project like a blog, though, it's important to set boundaries for yourself from the beginning so that your blog doesn't end up taking over your life. I'm not going to tell you to limit yourself from working on your blog when you're super excited about it - that would be silly and counterproductive. What I am saying is that you need to remember that one of the best things about having a business like a blog is the freedom it creates in your life. Yet we teachers (little go-getters that we are) tend to approach blogging like we approach teaching… we're all in, 110%, all day, all night… when we're not giving 110% to teaching. That is a recipe for burnout. Instead, think about the things you had in mind when you started blogging.  If you want to be able to enjoy a work-free movie night with your family every Friday night, give yourself a rule that there's no blog work on Fridays after dinner. If you want to be able to work from anywhere so you can travel with your son's soccer team, then grab a laptop and make use of the time he's at practice (and then put it away afterward so you can hear about the gnarly goal he made). The fact is that nobody starts a business - even a blog - so they can be tied to their computer 24/7. So if that's not your goal, then don't start that way. It will feel like there's sooooo much to do, but honestly, I think that's just life in the 21st century. Start building your blog how you want it to look in the long run. Eliminate, Automate, Delegate If you read blogging advice online, you're going to find a lot of advice on things you “must” do in order to be successful. For full-time bloggers, maybe these things are possible, but as a side hustler, you have to be more discerning with what you take on. I know I'm taking on too much when I start to feel unsure of what to do next. If I'm feeling stuck and procrastinating doing anything, it's usually because I'm trying to do too much. The first thing to do in this situation is to look at your list and take at least one thing off of it. Usually it's something I read about someone else doing and decided that I had to take on, too. (No, that urge doesn't go away as you get further into your journey.) Shift these things over to a Maybe Someday list, or just cross it out and move on. The next thing to do is look for things that you can automate, like emails, social media responses, tagging and segmenting subscribers, your opt-in… automation is a huge time saver and it can keep you from going into burnout. Truth be told, automation also makes your business more appealing to your readers. We expect things to happen instantly, so when people sign up for your email list, they want the freebie you promised right away… not when you get around to it after school, homework, dinner, and soccer practice. The first task many bloggers automate is email delivery. It's inexpensive and easy to use - and it's a great investment because your email list is key in making money from your blog. I personally use and recommend ConvertKit. Another popular option is automating social media posts. I use RecurPost, but for beginners typically recommend CinchShare. The last thing to try when burnout is on the horizon is delegate tasks to someone else.  Some things just need a personal touch, or just need to be dealt with as they happen, but that doesn't mean they need to be dealt with by you! If you notice that you can't get the meaningful items on your to-do list because you're spending all your time answering emails, managing your Facebook group, or doing other non-zone-of-genius stuff, it may be time to delegate to a virtual assistant. But, don't forget that you don't just have to eliminate, automate, and delegate business tasks. You can free up time and energy by applying this same principle at home. If you can't get to your blog work because you're too busy shopping, cooking dinner, and cleaning your house, get your groceries delivered, put Hello Fresh on auto delivery, or hire someone to do the cleaning. Bonus: Hiring for your home is often cheaper than hiring a VA, Repurpose Your Content A mistake many bloggers make at the beginning (including yours truly) is creating new content instead of reusing what they've already got.  You write a blog post, share it once, then move on and write something else… all while trying to think of something else to share on social media. It's exhausting, and can lead to not only business burnout, but also creative burnout. (That's when you're still passionate about your blog, but feel like you have nothing more to say.) Instead, get more mileage from your blog posts and what you've already created. When writing a post, craft a couple of different posts to use to share it, maybe grab a quote, and then share your post multiple times. A common misconception is that once you share a post, everyone has seen it. In fact, only about 1-3% of your followers will see what you share on social media. On top of that, many won't be able to stop and read what you've written at that exact moment. All that's to say, keep sharing your content! By finding ways to go deeper on your content, rather than coming up with new ideas to hit on surface level, you can engage your readers in new ways and promote content you've already created. An example would be doing a weekly Facebook or Instagram live to answer questions about your latest post. You can use a tool like StreamYard to go live in multiple places at once, then download your video to upload permanently to YouTube. Say No - A LOT In my first several years of teaching I worked all the time. Teaching was my whole life, from the time I woke up, to the time I went to bed. From what I've heard, most teachers are the same way. If they needed someone to be on a committee, I was your girl. Schedule adjustments needed? Sign me up to help! We're having a dance? Awesome! I'll chaperone! It's in our nature to do whatever's asked of us, but it's not necessary, and it's not healthy. The problem is that we feel like we need an excuse to say no, as if, “I'm tired and want to go home to want Netflix.” isn't a valid excuse (it is). If you're going to grow a blogging business, saying no is going to have to become part of your vocabulary, because here's the thing: Every time you say yes to something, you're saying no to something else. When you agree to be on that committee, you're taking time and mental bandwidth away from your blog, your classroom, and your family. A few years ago, I found myself a member of 2 district-level committees and serving as a scorer for reflection papers for new teachers… and quickly approaching burnout because I was doing all that and didn't say no to anything in my business either. So - by default - I ended up saying no to rest, family time, and sleep. I wrote to my assistant superintendent and told him I needed to step away from all of it, and refocused my energy. Open committee seat? Administrative something needs to be done? Dance on Friday until 10pm? I'm sorry, I'm busy. No explanation needed And guess what. The world hasn't stopped turning! Boundaries are important in every aspect of your life. It's not always easy to set them - or stick to them  - but if you're going to avoid burnout, they're essential. Consider your priorities, create boundaries for yourself and your blog, and you will find it much easier to avoid hitting burnout. In Teacher Blog Academy, we teach you how to build a blog in a sustainable way, with just the basics, and without any of the excess to-dos that aren't necessary and just add stress to your life. This needs to be created and updated regularly.   Baseline or evergreen content is the type of content that you can create and have it go out on autopilot, no need to constantly change it.   Baseline content can include: About you – share who you are Testimonials Lead Magnets Non-promotional services such as coaching Quick tips Memes and fun posts Posts to get engagement   She then talks about her fave scheduling tool – RecurPost and how this works – allowing you to schedule and forgot.   Sarah also runs a free monthly content planning class via her Facebook group so come and join to participate.

Market Like a Boss
Episode 67: Ask Me Anything

Market Like a Boss

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 30, 2020 60:14

On this week’s episode of Market Like a Boss Podcast, I’m answering ALL your marketing questions. These questions are all about marketing and my business. As you guys know, I like to be completely transparent with my audience and have an open discussion!  Let’s dive in... What triggered your #1 mindset shift? (2:18) This is a really good question. Mindset is key. I talk about this a lot because your mindset truly controls the success of your business. Mindset can cause you to miss out on opportunities and potential clients because of your fears. It took me a while to shift my mindset. I had to work with my coach on this. She had to challenge me and ask me the hard questions. She asked me, “do you want more clients?” Of course I said yes, but the truth was I was scared I wasn’t going to be able to deliver.  Is a sales funnel necessary? (6:12) It all depends on your goal. If you’re looking to bring in more passive income, a funnel is a great way to do so. Remember to start with the end goal of what you want the funnel to achieve and work backward from there.  Is there a template for writing social media content? (7:38) There’s NO template. So many female entrepreneurs search for the “secret” template that gets the most engagement, but there is no cookie cutter when it comes to marketing. What works for one person doesn’t work for another. Don’t think of it like a template, but rather ask yourself...what does your audience need to hear from you? Create your social media copy with that mindset. How much personal info should you share in posts? (11:02) I’m very transparent about my marketing, my journey, and goals that I have reached, but you don’t need to be as open as me. Share as much as you’re willing to - but remember that your audience does need to connect with you emotionally in order to decide to invest. Don’t build up a wall with your audience. Talk to them human-to-human because people tend to need to gain your trust before they would want to work with you.   One boundary I’ve set for myself is that I don’t talk about a particular struggle I’ve experienced while I’m still in it. I share it afterward so that I always have the perspective of having gone through it and come out on the other side. Should I share any family pictures on my social media channels? (13:36) Throw out the word “should.” It’s your choice if you want to share your family pictures. It won’t affect your marketing if you don’t. That being said, if your brand is based around family you may want to consider giving your audience a behind-the-scenes look at your family (however you feel comfortable). How do you start a Facebook group and create a loyal following? What about starting a podcast? (16:21) When it comes to a Facebook group or a podcast, just start. I started my Facebook group with no long-term strategy...in fact, it was born out of a free challenge I was running online and I needed a place to house the videos. After the challenge was finished, I left the group open and voila, Market Like a Boss was born. I love groups and building relationships so I just kept showing up every day, which is how I build a loyal following. If you have a group, consider the experience you want your audience to have and what will keep them coming back. I highly recommend posting and engaging every day. Show up no matter how many people are tuning in. When it comes to a podcast, I recommend coming up with a list of topics you want to talk about and be sure you’re clear on what you want your audience to gain from listening to you. How do you manage multiple social media platforms? (19:01) I definitely recommend using automation when possible...for the right activities. I normally batch out content once a week and created a designated time on my calendar to develop new content. Also, repurpose and reuse any existing content because it saves you time and some people might not have seen it the first time. I also use scheduling tools like Buffer to schedule ahead of time or RecurPost for any recurring daily content in my group like questions and prompts. How do you post valuable content without being repetitive? (20:53) It’s ok to post the same thing more than once because people might not even remember this post or didn’t see the first time. Most women feel like they have to be in a constant state of creating content. Save the content you’ve created and think about how you can reuse it again. For example, I record my FB lives and repurpose some of them as podcast episodes. I also repurpose my lives as blog posts too. So I’m creating one piece of unique content (the FB Live) and sharing it multiple places and in multiple formats. What’s the biggest mistake you’ve ever made? (21:57) When I first started my business I was doing full-service marketing and as a result, I took on so much responsibility for my clients. I was doing everything for them and thinking about their business 24/7. When I shifted to coaching, my mindset had to shift too. I started holding my clients accountable and challenging them to think for themselves. They became more committed to the work we were doing and got better results. What's the funniest thing you’ve ever done that ended up being a good idea? (24:14) Honestly, when I first started I developed a challenge and started my Facebook group. I thought I would shut the group down after the challenge, but here we are a couple years later where I have almost 3000 members and 95% of my clients come from the group. Never did I think that my first challenge was going to lead me here Does email marketing work in today’s world? (25:08) Short answer? Yes. We live in a world where we’re attached to our phones and email is the first thing we check before getting out of bed. Doesn’t mean you HAVE to do email marketing but if you’re not at least building an email list you’re leaving money on the table. How can I land my first paid client? (26:20) Build relationships and talk to people. Network in your own backyard and consider who could be a good referral partner for you (ideally someone who offers a complimentary service to yours). Tell your friends/family about your business and who you serve. Bottom line: just keep focusing on serving and showing up.” Should you work for free to build a portfolio? (29:10) I truly don’t believe you should ever work for free. Some may disagree, but here’s the thing: you have experience in your field or you wouldn’t have started your business. Even if you haven’t landed a client yet, that experience still translates. Plus when you work for free, your heart usually isn’t fully in it and the client isn’t as committed, which means it’s difficult to reach the desired result. Instead of working for free, consider a special introductory price.  What should I do if I’m targeting several groups of people? (30:58) If you are targeting several types of clients, your marketing and messaging will get watered down. You want to focus on one group of people who you can serve best. A broad or vague message won’t catch the attention of your dream clients. What’s the best way to build an email list? (32:25) Create a free resource (lead magnet) on a topic that someone could download or watch in exchange for sharing their email address. Be sure your lead magnet addresses their most immediate problem and gives them a quick win. If you’re stumped for ideas, consider what your dream client needs to know in order to get the best and fastest results working with you. How do you know when you’re coming across salesy? (33:16) If you have to wonder whether you’re coming across as salesy, then you probably are. In fact, I’m willing to bet you’re putting pressure on yourself to land the client. How about focusing on the person you want to serve and helping them solve their problem? Don’t look for the sale - in fact, clients come when you’re not focused on landing them. What are your thoughts on marketing via direct messaging? (35:40) I prefer to build relationships outside of a direct message. This could be answering a question that was posted in another FB group and directing them to my group. Regardless of which path you choose, build the relationship first. Sometimes, I will do a quick hello or check-in on someone through DM if we have an existing relationship, but I always start the conversation outside of Messenger first.”  How can I prioritize being visible without it taking all my time? (38:18) Schedule time once a week to batch all your content. This has helped me so much because it's so easy to get caught up with content and social media, but having a designated time to work on it all at once will save you time. Also, I have a shared folder of all my content so that my team can go back and pull content for my social media calendar without me having to review it. Saves a ton of time! I also use a tool called Group Leads to automatically approve new members to my group, save their info, and add them to an email list where I have an automated welcome sequence giving them more resources from the group. Outside of that, there is a certain amount of time you’ll need to devote to building relationships (you can’t automate that piece). Prioritize that and show up everyday to talk to your people. Remember - if you’re not consistent in showing up, you can’t expect your dream clients to show up for you. I truly hope this marketing Q&A was helpful! #087: The One Hour a Week Marketing Plan

Marketing Magic

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2020 15:31

I get it. We’re not all marketers and we don’t have all the time in the world to promote our businesses. So what do you do if you have limited time to promote your business yet you still need big results and leads flowing in your door?  If you only have one hour a week to dedicate to marketing your business, what are the activities you should put at the top of your list? There’s a misconception that you have to spend hours marketing, and you totally can spend hours marketing, but it’s really more about busy work sometimes, then true marketing. So I want to break down the four things you should be doing in your one hour a week, if you only had an hour with maybe a couple of extra bonuses because I think you’re going to find you have a couple pockets of time in your week that throw some of this stuff in.  First, let’s break down marketing into a couple of categories. When I think about marketing tasks, they usually flow around some of the big Ws. Okay, remember guys, I was a former journalist, but you know, the five W’s right, like the who, what, when, where, why, when how all those things that was pretty much the core of how we had to write stories and how we interviewed people was we had to get these basic facts. It’s called the lede in journalism and it requires you to know what you’re leading with in an article.  It’s the same thing with marketing and your business, you need to figure out the W’s for your business and how to promote it. The most important questions I’m going to help you answer are the where, the who, and the what of your business.  So if you have an hour a week and have to cram it in, these are the things I want you to make sure you’re tackling every single week or you really don’t have a business, right? It’s really hard unless you have a crazy referral system to have people coming into your business if don’t got visibility, baby. So the first step is you’ve got to be visible.  Make sure every single week you are doing something to get visible in your business. That’s everything from, if we’re talking about local marketing, face to face if you’re going out or if you’re in your community, region or area. For social media, this could include posting or sharing a blog, going live, meeting up with someone face to face. Figure out how are you going to be visible during your one hour a week.  Figure out is how to build a community. A lot of people don’t consider this to be part of marketing. But if you think about it, where do a lot of your leads come from? They often come from people or from your circles of people who know you, right? And so if you don’t know anybody, it’s going to be hard for you to grow those circles of people, and have them interact with you in a way that’s going to compel them to either work with you, or buy from you. So back to our W questions, for this one you’re answering the Where. Where do you need to be to build community and what does that community look like for you?  So if you’re an online business this could be a Facebook community or a LinkedIn community. It could be a physical community, it could be a support group. There are so many different things you could be creating community around, but you need to figure out what does that look like for your business? Because if you’re not furthering the community around you in some way shape or form, then it’s going to be really hard for you to grow a business. Communities are great marketing for you because when you build a community, you get a built in group of cheerleaders.  Who does not want somebody to go up before them and be your cheerleaders? By investing a little bit of time in someone and when I say community also, I don’t mean you have to like go to like a, like a group, a group thing every week, but you do need to pour into somebody who’s in your community, because basically, they’re able to go out and be like a sounding board and a voice and a marketing for you. Because they’re going to talk about you once you’re top of mind.  Talk with people. Often times people use marketing to hide behind actually doing face to face conversations with potential clients. But if you’re not talking to people, it’s really hard to sell something. If you didn’t talk to people how would you know what to put out there? One on one conversations guiding someone around what you do helps you figure out “How do I sell what I have? How do I talk about it better? What are the words I need to be using to promote it?” If you talk to people, they’re going to give you the language and objections, and all the things in their head, which you can use to promote your business in some way, shape, or form. Promote your content. You have to promote what you’re creating and promote what you’re doing. You have to talk about it. If you don’t put out your content and you don’t talk about, “Hey, I have this blog, or this podcast, or this live or this sale, or I’m doing this event,”… if you don’t talk about it, people won’t know about it.  We often assume in our minds that we’re boring people or are so obnoxious when we talk about our stuff. And that’s really just your perception of how you feel about your own words coming out of your mouth.  You cannot over market yourself.  I can’t say it enough. So whether you have a million hours in the week or one hour in the week, you got to be putting yourself out there and getting visible.  If you have no clue or if you’re like, I need help, please, please, please, please, I need help on getting visible, please hop on over to get the free Get Visible Guide that walks you through how to create a visibility plan. It has 63 ideas right now for how you can get visible. That’s one of the most important pieces and that’s why I included it first. If you don’t have visibility, you don’t have a business period.  How hard is it to find somebody when you don’t know they exist, right? People are looking for what you do and what you offer, what you sell. If they can’t find you, then you can’t grow and you can’t reach them and you can’t connect with them and nurture them and all the things we talked about in the podcast.  So start with being visible. Download the guide if you need help with that. Build your community. That’s investing in one person who can help you move forward or showing up for a group of people. Remember those concentric circles, how they spread out and word of mouth kind of happens in your business. You actually talk to people so you have a pulse check, and so you get feedback on what you’re doing, what you’re offering, what your price point is, what the languages, the objections, all of those things that help answer conversations, and then promote, promote, promote, promote, promote.  Don’t be afraid to promote yourself and what you’re doing.  During your one hour a week what you’re doing is setting up how to promote yourself for the rest of the week. Take 15 minutes to do that. Break those down into 15 minute segments to make sure: • All right I’m gonna slip in a 15 minute call with someone here. • I’m gonna make sure I’m visible in these four places.  • These are the people I want to talk to this week. • This is how I’m going to build community this week. • These are all the ways I’m going to promote my content and put it on autopilot. There are so many tools out there, there are no excuses for you not to have be able to put stuff on autopilot and show up every single day and promote your business every single day. If you need recommendations, some of my favorite ones to use, clearly Facebook, you can just use the like the scheduler in there. I love Recurpost. Buffer is a great one.  Bonus tasks! Now a couple of bonus things if you find yourself able to squeeze in more than just an hour a week or you have pockets of time you want to fit this in. The other three things that I recommend to make sure you’re doing is making offers to people, creating content and tracking metrics.  For making offers: This may feel like sales, but if there is no way for people to figure out how to buy something from you or work with you, then your marketing is pointless. You have to be selling things in order to have a business. So whether that’s selling yourself, your services, your products, and event tickets, you got to be talking about it and making offers. So make sure you have a way for people to work with you.  For creating the content: this goes with promoting content. For so many of us, we don’t have a problem creating content, we just forget to ever talk about it again.  I would rather you share the crap out of your content, one thing a million ways rather than create a million different pieces of content that you never talk about? So create content if you need to.  For tracking your metrics: Figure out what’s working, see what channel where people coming from, what’s actually getting you closer to your goals. If you don’t have a goal with your marketing, then you’re just doing busy work also. Want to know how I track marketing metrics to get started? Grab my Sexy Marketing Metrics Spreadsheet on Episode 005 here. I hope that this helps break down and demystify the big marketing activities that I always tell you to focus on your business.  About Marketing Magic: The Marketing Magic podcast is where women entrepreneurs trying to do all the things come to get inspiration, business strategy, and on-air coaching on how to get their business noticed and growing. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics

This behavioral economics podcast is another foundations episode where we discuss the E in NUDGES: expect error. I think this might be my favorite of all the types of nudges. This is really the reason we need nudges at all – and why choice architecture even exists. Choice architecture takes a lot of time, effort and strategy to do well and having a background in nudging is essential to helping your customers and employees make good choices. If we humans did not make errors, we would not need help in making decisions. We would be able to evaluate all the possible options and make an informed decision every time. Because we don’t and can’t…we need choice architecture. And it is all built on expecting those errors to properly build in nudges. In this episode, I talk about different types of errors with real life examples and how to apply this information to your life and business. CLICK HERE FOR YOUR FREE DOWNLOAD! Show Notes [05:02] If humans didn't make errors, then we wouldn't need help making decisions. [05:16] We need choice architecture, because we don't evaluate all of the possible options and make the most informed decision every time. [05:36] When it comes to errors – we can expect humans to err on nearly anything. No matter how brilliant someone is, they will still make errors throughout their lives. [06:01] Quote from Nudge: “Beethoven wrote his ninth symphony while he was deaf, yet he would frequently misplace his house keys. How can people be simultaneously so smart and so dumb?” This is what makes us human. [06:42] Errors come in many fashions – as I said it can be as simple as forgetting your keys or leaving the card in the ATM. These are actually part of a subcategory of error called postcompletion error. [06:57] Postcompletion errors occur whenever we have a task to do, and once it is partially done, we mentally check it off the to do list. [08:41] The list of potential errors is truly endless. [08:59] The dinging noise your car makes when you don't have your seat belt on is a nudge, because manufacturers expect you to make an error at some point. [09:24] Check engine and filter lights are also nudges. [10:31] Try to incorporate all of the senses when creating a nudge. [10:52] Any time something is not consistent enough to become a habit (check out episodes 21 and 22 if you need a refresher) it is a prime candidate for error. [11:15] Consistency is key in business. [11:35] A good example of this is taking medicine every day at a consistent time. [13:06] Subscription models are really useful when an error is expected. They help the customer do what they are supposed to do, and it gives the business a built in reason to follow up and stay top-of-mind. [13:33] In the case of an air conditioning unit…it is important to have the ducts cleaned on a regular maintenance schedule. [14:16] I would recommend regular check ins with their customers – on more than just maintenance tips. That way, you can check in more than just once every three years (which is longer than you want to go if you want to remain top of mind). [15:24] People want heat when it is cold and AC when it is hot (this is availability bias – episode 15). [15:33] Send an annual check in or reminder in the fall and spring. The AC company could also create some type of certification program to prove that the unit has received recommended maintenance. This could help when selling a home and realtors could also be partners. [16:42] You get all this benefit from a little strategic foresight and understanding of when people will make errors, so you can step in and be the solution. [16:56] In any company, there are bound to be tons of places where people will make errors – both employees and customers. Dig deeper and look for more opportunities to solve errors before they happen. [18:28] Staff at the Ritz-Carlton have the ability to make things right for customers without having to ask for permission. [20:06] When you are trying to anticipate errors to nudge, you should be looking all over the company – not just at customers, but employee processes as well. [21:39] Busy or overwhelmed brain, which we talked about in episode 32. This is where postcompletion error comes in. [22:21] Our conscious brain can only focus on so much and the subconscious is making the vast majority of our decisions using rules of thumb (as you know – this is the basis for behavioral economics). When we get busy, we become overwhelmed and have more errors than usual. [22:34] Things that aren't habits are easily forgotten, but habits also get forgotten. Try to be present in the moment or nudge your team or employees to remember. [23:19] Too many nudges can become one more thing to not pay attention to. Try to get into the mindset of your customer or staff. [24:10] Things like auto-pay and subscriptions can be helpful nudges. [24:51] Stop trying to change the behavioral errors and force people into a system that doesn’t work. Instead look at what you can be adding into the process to make it easier. [26:15] Changing the nozzles for different drugs and anesthesia helped reduce common errors. Checklists in hospitals are also good reminders. [27:06] A busy brain and commonly repeated tasks are a breeding ground for errors. [28:37] Any time you say someone “should” be able to do this or “they know better” or if you have multitasking staffers…they are prime candidates for nudges. [29:09] Products to solve a problem. Customers are willing to pay for a solution to a problem that helps them avoid making an error. [32:59] Gmail has come up with some clever nudges such as asking if you have an attachment if you write the word “attachment” in the text of your message and there is nothing attached, and putting ignored emails back at the top of the inbox. [33:32] The next category involves understanding a hot state and a cold state. When someone is in a cold state, it is easy to say they will do something (or not do something) but then when they are in their hot state…it is a lot harder to stick to the commitment. [34:10] Find things that can be done in a cold state to prevent behaviors from happening in a hot state. [35:32] Programs like Save More Tomorrow have been used to increase the amount someone will pay into to their retirement using a precommitment. [36:30] Staying top-of-mind and why consistency is key in business. [37:13] It's important to stay consistent with your business and have regular touch points with your potential customers. Put your customers in a drip campaign and send out your newsletter on a regular basis so it becomes part of their routine. [38:12] Remember, people make mistakes and it is your company’s job to find a way to make it easier for them to use your product or service. You cannot expect your customer to do that for you. [38:54] Follow your customers to see how they interact with the product provided. [39:59] Pourable laundry soap spouts are a result of observational research. [40:31] Look at your company or product for errors that take place and ways to place a nudge as a reminder. Thanks for listening. Don’t forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Android. Build a website in just 5 days (even if you're not techie) at www.free5daywebsitechallenge.com Already have a website? Take the Free "Jumpstart Your Website Traffic" marketing mini-course at www.jumpstartyourwebsitetraffic.com Leave a Review! In my last pep talk, I shared with you the first step in building your email list, an. If you haven’t listened, you can go to peptalksforsidehustlers.com/67. SO HERE’S THE DEAL: JUST HAVING A WEBSITE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT ANYONE WILL EVER FIND IT. And it can be very discouraging and frustrating to put your time, effort, passion, patience, and money into building your website and then not see your email list growing. Last week, I shared with you exactly how to start connecting with influencers who serve the same audience you want to serve online. They’re not necessarily offering the same set of services you’re offering, but the people that follow them are the kinds of people you can help. This week, you’re not going to stop building the relationships, you’re going to keep doing that while we layer on the next step. So continue working on building those relationships – even if your website isn’t finished! THIS NEXT STRATEGY DOES REQUIRE THAT YOU HAVE YOUR WEBSITE COMPLETE AND THE FREEBIE THAT YOU’RE GIVING AWAY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN EMAIL ADDRESS ALL SETUP. And when I say freebie, I mean something super actionable and valuable that solves part of the problem that you solve for your clients. It can be a video, a PDF, an email series, it doesn’t matter as long as it provides a solution to a problem and demonstrates that you have what it takes to help them! If you don’t have a website or a freebie an email list building strategy yet, click here to sign up for my Free 5 Day Website Challenge where I’ll show you exactly how to get all that set up for under $100. After you’ve started to build relationships online and your website is up and running, it’s time to start giving as many people as possible a reason to come to your website! But not just anybody… we want to get in front of our ideal customer and let them know we exist! MOST PEOPLE THINK THAT IN ORDER TO GET TRAFFIC TO THEIR WEBSITE, THEY NEED TO MAKE SURE IT COMES UP IN THE TOP OF GOOGLE SEARCH RESULTS BECAUSE THAT’S HOW PEOPLE FIND WEBSITES, RIGHT? In my humble opinion, that type of thinking is flawed. It puts all the power in the hands of Google’s algorithms and the person actually actively searching for what you have to offer at any given moment. It’s like all the stars have to align for it to work out, and the chances of that aren’t good especially if your offering isn’t super unique. If I spent all my time trying to rank for WordPress training, one, I wouldn’t be attracting the kinds of clients I love to work with because I don’t want to teach just anyone, and two, there’s so much competition in the space it would be really, really hard to stand out. People also think that they have to pay for advertising, which when you’re just starting out and every dollar counts can feel like a risky proposition. I’ve had success with Facebook Ads in some instances and spent a lot of money without a good return in others. So that’s why I want to share with you a strategy that doesn’t cost anything but your time. WHICH LEADS ME TO THE SECOND STEP IN THE RACE STRATEGY: AMPLIFY. Google is just one route of many that people can take to get to your website – but I’m going to show you how to leverage your relationships to drive more traffic to your website. Amplify means to enlarge or make greater, so you have to actually have something to amplify!! That’s why you need a website, an email list, and a freebie – because once we take the steps I’m gonna outline here to get people onto our website, we need to grab that email address so we can continue the conversation! The goal is not just to get people to our website, it’s to get them on our email list so now we’re the ones that can initiate communication, rather than waiting for our ideal client to think about us and reach out. OKAY, SO HERE ARE THE EXACT STEPS TO TAKE TO AMPLIFY YOUR MESSAGE AND GET MORE TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE. Write one blog post a week and include or a mention or links to content created by the people with whom you are intentionally relationship-building. Write about what you learned from that person, how you took some advice from them and put it into action, how their freebie solved your problem. Or do a review of their latest book or course or blog post or podcast episode. Just write your story about how you’re successfully using the advice they are giving you. Or if you feel like you’ve built enough of a relationship with the person, ask them if you can interview them and publish that as your blog post. When I first started my business, I posted in entrepreneur Facebook groups that I wanted to interview people that had built their own WordPress sites. I asked them all the same set of questions, and then I tagged them with a link to our interview. I know this can seem daunting at first to write a blog post each week. I had a really hard time with consistency for about the past year, but then I was challenged by my business coach to write one post a week. It’s what I do on Saturday mornings first thing (well, after coffee.) Pick a day and time each week that you’ll sit down to write, and schedule this non-negotiable time on your calendar. I block off 4 hours on Saturday mornings to write. Make sure your email opt-in to your freebie is showing up on your blog page, whether it’s in the sidebar or as a pop-up, or you refer to it directly in the blog post itself (or all three!). Share the link to your blog post on the social media where the person you’re writing about hangs out the most or has the biggest audience and tag/mention them in your post. You should have been able to figure this out where they hang out the most online as you’ve been engaging with them in the Relationships phase. So if they have a huge Twitter following and they are really active on Twitter, mention them in your tweet with a link back to your post – and put some strategic hashtags in there also! If they have a huge Facebook fan page, post a link to your article to their wall, or in the comments of a relevant post. If they have a big Facebook group, make sure you read the rules first, and if allowed, post it there with a note of thanks. If they are most active on Instagram, change the link in your Insta profile to this blog post, and then create a graphic of the title, post to Insta and tag them in the post (and use relevant hashtags as well). If they are a live-streamer, catch their broadcast and mention your post in the comments, inviting everyone to check out what you wrote about them. Add your post to a social media scheduler service like RecurPost so that it gets shared again in the future automatically. Why? The person you’re writing about – their audience is going to grow, maybe they didn’t see it the first time, etc. You just want as many opportunities as possible to get in front of the people you want to serve! Remember, you’ve been intentionally building a relationship with people who already serve the people you want to serve. And people want to share what makes them look good. So when you write something awesome about those people, not only will they want to share that with their audience because it makes them look good, their audience will want to read what you wrote to learn more about that person or validate their decision to make a purchase. So we’re tapping into known networks of people that we already want to serve, and we’re doing it in a really authentic way that feels good because we’re providing value to the person who built the network by adding to their credibility and giving them a backlink to their website (which helps with SEO). We’re not trying to siphon off their clientele, we’re not in competition with them, but we know that people like to learn from multiple people and we have something to offer too! SO AS YOU CAN SEE, IT TAKES A LOT OF INTENTIONAL EFFORT AND ACTION TO DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE, BUT IT’S TOTALLY WORTH IT. And once you WOW your ideal customer with the value you deliver in your freebie, they are going to share it with their networks because people like to share what makes them look good!! There are lots of additional ways you can amplify your message with social media and your website, but I don’t want to overwhelm you right now with too many options! It’s super important to me that you’re able to implement what I’m teaching in this blog post series and start to get some traction!! SO HOW WILL YOU KNOW IF YOU’RE GETTING TRACTION? First, you’ll see your email list start to grow. Second, you’ll look in your Google Analytics and see if your traffic has increased and where it’s coming from. Is it coming from Facebook or Twitter? Is it going to the blog post you wrote about Marie Forleo or Pat Flynn? That will give you an idea of where the people who have what you need are hanging out, and then you can start to focus your efforts. We’ve all heard that we’re supposed to be building an audience online. Even if we don’t want traditional success, many of us put our work online to share our creativity and use it to connect with others. But building all these “platforms” takes time and energy away from the creative process. It can make us discouraged as we compare ourselves to others and frustrated that we don’t have time to do all the things we’re “supposed” to be doing. So how do we balance social media and the creative life? That’s what we’re talking about in this episode. You can now support Chasing Creative on Patreon! Resources We Mentioned Ashley loves Alexandra Franzen, who is not on social media and doesn’t seem to actively build a platform anywhere. It can be done! Rachel Meeks from Small Notebook hasn’t blogged in years and Abbie still goes back and re-reads her blog from time to time. Hootsuite does post to Instagram now! So does Buffer, but Abbie’s favorite remains Later.com. Ashley recommends finding tools that recycle past updates for you on social media. She recommends RecurPost and SmarterQueue for Twitter as free or close-to-free options, and Board Booster for Pinterest, but she doesn’t remember how much it costs. The human brain is funny. It will do many things to protect us. The worse thing it does is lie to us on our behalf. And to be honest Kristin and I see this a lot when business owners share content or try and sell online.  We tell ourselves we are launching; however, we are really just checking off a to-do list item.  Sharing on Facebook and saying we are done is a failed launch! Even if we get a few people into our sales process and make a few sales and most people will not do even that. They will complain that they tried to do it and the people just did not want it. The Truth is we just lied to ourselves, we spent so much time creating something of beauty for the world, we spent no time trying on the marketing and sales process. We wished for success and did set ourselves up for failure. Start planning for your success Join Kristin and I as we talk about some actionable steps you can take now to improve your next launch. and talk about some of the tools we use to try and improve our odds of success. Dinesh Agarwal is the founder of Recurpost, a social scheduler that lets people recycle their best updates on social platforms. It is the only “one click, share all” social media system that seeks out content with the highest “like-and-share-me” power, attracts highly-qualified leads, and inspires sales calls that practically close themselves. Dinesh holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and had initially created Recurpost to help his start-ups build a strong online presence but as his clientele grew, he choose to provide Recurpost to them and it became a huge hit.  Period in full-time business  When he was an undergraduate, he started a software company with his fellow students through which they developed different software for local businesses and it worked very well but after undergraduate he went to a master's program and had to stop doing the software work. He knew that he wanted to be an entrepreneur but didn't realise it until he went into the Ph.D. program.   At one point, a former school mate approached him about a software idea and Dinesh developed the required algorithm immediately. Dinesh used to attend a lot of events in Atlanta based on startups and he realised that most of them had great software ideas but didn't know any IT people who could develop them affordably and reliably. Dinesh saw an opportunity in that and once he graduated from the Ph.D. program, he went back to India and started a company offering the development services to people who had ideas.  Initial project  The first project his company worked on doesn't exist anymore because they couldn't get users to use it so they had to shut it down. He says that over 30 projects they worked on ended up failing.  Tip: If you are working on an idea and it fails, don't feel bad about it, just move on to the next failure. You only need one successful idea  Reason for failed projects  He says there are many things that cause failures. They now don't work on ideas that are not properly defined in terms of the target market and other criteria, Dinesh also says he does not invest in online marketplace ideas.   Tip 1: If you want to get into your software idea then be ready for a lot of expensive marketing or work with someone who knows exactly what needs to be done  Tip 2: If you are getting into an idea with someone who will not be able to contribute a lot of time, the chances of failure are high. You should work with people who are passionate about what they are doing.  Importance of technical founder Vs. outsourcing   Dinesh says that there are 2 problems to outsourcing and they include; the person is not married to the idea, they are more concerned about the money they will make. They may be good people and do good work, they will not be there to handle all the technical issues that will definitely come up. He gave an example of how once they had someone buy a domain for them and the person forgot to renew it so it expired and the client's website went down and affected his business.  Business model  He says that his company works with its clients on a partnership/equity basis where the client doesn't pay them for their time but instead gives up equity in the idea. The client only pays for any required freelancers and pays a small amount for the overhead costs of Dinesh's company. Therefore, the company only works on projects that have future value. They never work on more than 4 projects at a time.  Core revenue streams  Right now, Dinesh says they have some projects that are making them money like Recurpost. Recurpost is making them enough money to pay the bills. One of the projects they just started is about to get funded and he hopes that it will be a great success. The project is based on replacing ERP software from the manufacturing industry. Manufacturers are not highly tech savvy people so they don't want software that increases their work load or requires them to hire more people to operate it. They need something that

Create If Writing
096- Stop Creating Content!

Create If Writing

I'm a big dreamer and an ideas person. But today I'm going to tell you to stop creating content! Yes. I said it. Stop. Keep reading (or listen to the podcast) to learn why AND what you should do instead. A big thanks to our sponsor, Ambition Ally, the makers of PopUpAlly Pro! Stop Creating Content I'm the kind of person who loves to START. If I could hire a team of finishers, I would be the most productive person on the planet. I have half-finished books everywhere-- both books I'm reading and books I'm WRITING. I like to paint and I have half-finished paintings stacked up against the wall in one room. I even have a half-finished hallway. So creating content is my jam. I DO finish blog posts (though I have a ton of drafts in my lifestyle blog, waiting for an image or a few more paragraphs) because they are shorter. As a lover of starts, I can just keep on churning out blog posts. I used to post every day of the week, multiple times a DAY. Then I moved down to once a day, seven days a week. Then five days. Then three days. Then one day a week. And you know what? My pageviews didn't drop. (Not until I became a blogging derelict and stopped posting weekly at all...) There are two main problems with creating so much content: You get stuck on a hamster wheel of creation and feel like you can't stop. You don't give each piece of content the attention it deserves. The Hamster Wheel of Content Creation When you create content over a period of weeks, months, or years, sometimes you get to a point where it's like the schedule owns YOU instead of the other way around. If you've ever ruined a vacation because of your blog, you know what I mean. (Yep. I've done it.) It's time to stop creating content when the content owns YOU.  If there is guilt when you don't post every day. Or every week. Maybe you should STOP. Take a breath. Take a break. Remind your content who is boss. (Spoiler alert: it's YOU.) If you feel constantly behind and stressed and rushing for a deadline or to get that Instagram post up at just the right time, then maybe you should stop creating content. I don't mean forever, by the way. I'll get to that later. Being a Good Steward of Gondor...and Your Content One other way you may know you need to stop creating content is if you are not giving each piece of content the love it deservers. If you are rushing to post. Not proofing. Not creating awesome content because you don't have time and just want that post up. Or if you don't have time to promote the content. Because let's be honest: this isn't 2007. If you create content and write a blog post, people DON'T just come. (Unless you rock your SEO and Fred-- the new Google update-- doesn't hate you.) You must promote posts for people to find them. If you aren't promoting your content well, then you are just tossing it into the abyss. Don't waste your content. Share your content well so that it gets the attention it deserves. This means that you need to set up some kind of system by which you are constantly sharing your content and promoting it. (More on that in a minute.) If you aren't being a good steward and sharing your already existing content, maybe it's time to stop creating content. Stop Creating Content and Do THIS Instead If it's time to stop creating content (even for a bit), here are two big things you can do instead. Repurpose existing content Set up an evergreen sharing system for your content I love, love love repurposing content. It can be a fine art. I'm going to share a few really helpful posts on that here instead of going into detail in this post. Repurpose existing content into a paid product. Read my post, listen to episode 90, and download the free case study on how I took a few live trainings that were free and turned them into over $1500 worth of income. Update old content to increase traffic. This post from Becky and Paula goes into great detail about how you can update old posts to see more results. It's super detailed from your title to the amount of whitespace in your post! The point of repurposing existing content is to take something that is already working and make it work better. Do more with it. Change and tweak rather than starting from scratch. It saves you time and it makes better use of your old posts. Which brings me to the second thing you can do instead of creating new content. In order to be a good steward of your content, you should set up an evergreen sharing system. This is not simply scheduling every week in something like Hootsuite or Buffer. This is setting up automation that means your posts will keep on sharing after you set it up ONCE. (Read more about the difference between automation and scheduling.) You can use tools like Social Jukebox (which I use), Recurpost, or Meet Edgar to create sort of content libraries with your links and images and even how you want to word the post itself. Set a schedule of how often you want it to post and where, and then YOU'RE DONE. For Pinterest, you can use something like Tailwind or Board Booster. These aren't quite automation, but close. You can set things up for a long time and even loop things in Board Booster. You are not being a good steward of your content if you aren't sharing it well. Unless you want your blog to be a diary that only you read, you need to get it in front of people. This should happen with the double-edged sword of SEO and social promotions. If you aren't doing these things for your current content, maybe you should stop creating content until you have a system in place. So...what do you think? Are you on board with this movement to stop creating content? Are you treating your current content well?

There are always new players in the social media marketing world. In this episode, Jeff and Kristin look at two new players in the market: Tailwind and Recurpost. We also discuss our requirements for social media scheduling apps. Our social media scheduling requirements There are a few key items we always look for in social media scheduling apps: Library building for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn - we want a social media scheduling tool that will allow us to build libraries of content which will automatically repost. We can load content to manually or via RSS feeds and reuse the content.  Ease of setup - we want something that is easy to setup and use. Ease of scheduling - scheduling your libraries should be easy. Bonus items we look for are good analytics and finding the best times to post our content.  This week, we look at two new players in the marketplace, Tailwind and Recurpost. Tailwind Tailwind is a social media scheduling app for Pinterest and Instagram. The software does allow you to repost content but not automatically. Frankly, this was not very important because we don't often recycle content on Pinterest and Instagram. Jeff found it easy to set up his account during the free trial although scheduling content was a bit confusing. We were disappointed that it does not automatically post to Instagram for you. It sends you a text message similar to the way Buffer handles Instagram.  The navigation was a bit complicated if you are only using it for one or two accounts, but we could see the value for larger businesses. The small business market seems to be a bit of an afterthought with this app. The pricing confirmed this for us. There are two pricing options listed on the website: Plus and Professional. The Plus option is for one account (Pinterest or Instagram, but you can add more accounts. The pricing is $15 per month or approximately $120 per year if you pay annually. At $9.99 per month on an annual plan, it is a bit expensive for one social media platform; but if you are all in with Instagram or Pinterest, it might be worth looking at. For Instagram, we will be sticking with Grum. It is very easy to use, automatically posts to Instagram and is $9.95 per month for up to two Instagram accounts. Plus, you don't have to pay annually to get that pricing. If you are looking to schedule things to Pinterest, Buffer allows it for paid accounts. Plus, you can use Buffer for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+. Recurpost Recurpost is a social media scheduling tool for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The creator states that they are also working to add Pinterest. The app allows you to build libraries and reuse the content.  Recurpost is a strong competitor for Edgar. We loved how easy it was to schedule posts and the app will find the best times to post your content. You can bulk upload URLs or use an RSS feed to add posts. There is a hashtag insert tool to suggest replacing terms in your post with hashtags you set.  The biggest advantage is the pricing. Edgar is $79 per month or $588 per year ($49 per month) for up to 25 accounts. Recurpost has a free option for three social media accounts and up to 100 scheduled posts. For $25 per month or $250 per year (two months free), you get up to 10 social media accounts and 1000 scheduled posts. For $49 per month or $490 per year, you get unlimited accounts and posts.  We were very impressed with Recurpost and are looking into it for our own scheduling needs. We think it is a viable alternative to Edgar.  Try Small Biz HQ for $5 and help us with some unexpected car expenses On February 17th, Jeff and I were driving to an event and were hit by another driver. Luckily, we are both okay but there was extensive damage to my car. There is also some question about whether the other driver has car insurance. We will need to advance the deductible and pay for a rental car while our insurance figures everything out. Therefore, we thought it would be a great time to offer a deal on your first month of Small Biz HQ. Use code MARCHFOR5 to get your first month of Small Biz HQ for only $5. Graham and Kevin discuss the business tools they use on a day to day basis to produce the podcast, build websites and maximise returns from social media. We mentioned lots of business tools in the episode, so here are links to each of them. Business tools we use for creating images Canva - Online simple graphic design www.canva.com Gimp - Open Source image manipulation software for Mac, Windows & Linux https://www.gimp.org/ (very powerful, but the user interface isn't as intuitive as photoshop) Affinity photo is the mac app Kevin uses to do more complex photo manipulation, its downloadable from the Mac app store at £39.95, and has loads of features that are aimed at professional photographers but at a way lower price than photoshop. We mentioned Jessica Rae's extensive guide to getting free or very low cost images, a brilliant resource: http://bit.ly/2diKbBP Business tools we use for creating websites We use Wordpress as our platform for building websites, its open source and free. Our sites are hosted on 1&1 internet, (http://bit.ly/2cGrd58) and they include a very straightforward wizard to set up a wordpress site without downloading anything We use Divi from Elegant Themes (http://bit.ly/1px3fjD) as our standard wordpress theme, its hugely flexible and adaptable to give you whatever look and feel you want. Elegant Themes also supply other themes that deploy the Divi builder, and the builder is available as a plugin too, though we've never tried using the builder with a 3rd party theme. One of Kevin's favourite wordpress plugins is Quiz and Survey Master by Frank Corso, No need for a link, its in the wordpress plugin repository. The Business Health Check is built using this. Business tools we use for social media Kevin uses Crowdfire, (https://www.crowdfireapp.com) it is excellent to manage followers for both twitter & instagram. He uses the iPad version which is downloadable from the app store Graham uses Buffer for scheduling tweets https://buffer.com - It will also schedule posts to Facebook and Linked In Kevin moved on from Buffer to Meet Edgar. (www.meetedgar.com) Worth checking out, but now very expensive after a recent subscription hike. A lower cost alternative to Meet Edgar might be Recurpost (http://bit.ly/2dmGuur) but this is still in beta version (Kevin has been involved in the beta test). When we post links in twitter, we usually use Bitly, (https://app.bitly.com) the link shortening service. this simply reduces the number of characters in the link and is especially useful when you only have 140 characters in the entire tweet. For automation, check out IFTTT or Zapier. Business tools for Email We both use Aweber (http://bit.ly/2dww5zR) for auto responder email, any downloads we offer on the show are delivered via Aweber. Mail chimp is also a good alternative, there's little to choose between the packages. Business tools for webinars Kevin has been using Webinarjam (http://bit.ly/2ddXM0O) and so far is very impressed with this. The main issue with a webinar is the sheer number of moving parts, and though not cheap, this tool gives a great single place to keep control of everything from managing sign ups to accessing the webinar replay. We are going to do a full show about webinars in the near future, so we will explain the full power of this tool at that point. Diary and Planning Kevin mentioned Acuity Schedule (http://bit.ly/2ddG36b) as a great way of letting clients have access to your appointment diary and book sessions with you. The system optionally links to stripe, so you can accept credit card payment for the appointment when its booked. We didn't mention Goals on Track (http://bit.ly/2abqP0j) in the show, but its worthy of taking a look. Kevin has used lots of different planning and task management apps over the years. This one is his current favourite, as it allows goals to be broken down into milestones tasks and activities, allows habit tracking,
