Did you set goals for your business at the start of the year, back in January?   If you're like most entrepreneurs, I'm sure you did. But, unlike most other entrepreneurs, you are NOT going to wait until December to assess your progress on those goals because we're diving into that right now.    In today's post, I'm guiding you through a midyear check-in for your business. Midyear is the perfect time to realistically determine if the path you're on is still serving your larger goals, or if it's time to reroute your GPS to make the most of the second half of 2022.    Read on to find out how to organize your own midyear review.   And don't worry - this is a judgment and stress-free exercise. Wherever you are right now is exactly where you're supposed to be. We're 6 months into 2022 - exactly halfway through the year.    It's the middle of the year, and we're coming up on the summer solstice, which is a beautiful representation of all the light, beauty, and abundance that's ahead of us. I find that now is a really good time to do a midyear business health check.    What do I mean by this?    Well, let's say you're headed out in your car on a long road trip. At the start, you pop your destination into your GPS and hit the road. Though at some point, when you're making a pit stop, you (along with your GPS) will check the conditions and look out for any upcoming traffic or other issues. Your GPS may end up rerouting you to ensure you're still on the best route to your destination.  The same system of assessing your route along the way is also an excellent idea for your business.    Most entrepreneurs set goals at the same time in January. Then, they head out into their year focused on trying to achieve X. Some get there, some don't. Come December, they check-in with the original goal and see where they ended up.     But here's the thing - January to December is too long of a time to go without a check-in. If you wait the entire year, you miss opportunities to reroute yourself. Your goals may have been better served and more likely to be attained if they'd been assessed along the way and potentially rerouted. And you can only make the decision to reroute if you always know exactly where you are, where you're trying to go, and the obstacles in between.  Where are you right now in your business?    In beginning your assessment, start by determining where you're at and where you want to go from here.    What does my current situation look like?   Am I actually producing what I want to produce?   Are things happening in the way I want them to happen?   Is my business giving me the freedom and joy that I want?   Where do I want to go with the rest of my year? The key here, especially as you get rolling, is to not be hard on yourself. Even if you're not where you wanted to be, that's ok. You are exactly where you are. There's no going backwards, so don't beat yourself up over it.    Wherever you are right now is exactly where you're supposed to be. Know this, accept this.    Acceptance allows you to take a step back and assess the big picture without judgment.     Are you where you want to be? If not, what are you going to do about it?   Are you fulfilling your purpose on a daily basis and doing what lights you up? Do you feel like your gifts are being put out into the world in a way that serves your clients in the best way possible?   You can use this midyear check-in as both a reality check and a wake-up call.  How to conduct your midyear business health check   Begin by finding a place where you can feel comfortable and get quiet. You want your environment to be a container that supports you. Maybe get a cozy blanket and a journal.    During this time, I want you to be a kind guide and mentor to yourself. Because if you're going to be honest with yourself, this is not about shame. This is about grounding yourself into a place where you feel super comfortable to journal on your deepest, most inner thoughts about your current reality, free of judgment.    Next, determine how you're spending your days. What is your intention? If you have an intention, you have a focus. And that's how you get better, little by little, day by day. What is it in your business that you want to continue to improve upon? Maybe it's creating more freedom, maybe it's creating more boundaries, maybe it's creating more sales, maybe it's creating more leads, maybe it's finally creating that funnel. Sometimes these goals/intentions can span over multiple weeks. The important thing is that you're not just waking up each day and attacking your to-do list without intention. That's a quick way to lose track of your intended route.    In this step, you're ultimately determining where you're at, what's working, what isn't, and what you want to improve upon moving forward.    This midyear check-in is also a fantastic time to check on your business' financial health.    Take a look at your profit number. Profit is different from revenue, and it's important to note the distinction. Your profit is going to give you your actual income, after expenses. Is this number something that you can live off of, and something that creates the freedom you're seeking?   Next, take a look at your business expenses, particularly recurring expenses. Make cuts accordingly for anything that's no longer necessary. Be mindful of where your money is going and how you're spending it.    Lastly, determine what you can do to bring in more leads, and thus, more sales and revenue. How can you better serve your clients in a scalable way?   Once you complete your midyear check-in, I'd love to hear how it went. DM me on Instagram and let me know what you tapped into. Please also share this with a business friend who needs to do a midyear check in of their own to recalibrate and reset where they're going on their map.

CPAs are very busy people. They process an incredible amount of tax paperwork per year and provide data to their clients that may be hard to digest. Because of those reasons, according to this week’s guest, most people are unhappy with their CPAs. Joe DiSanto is a former owner of a Los Angeles-based multimillion-dollar production company and is now the founder of finance, business, and real estate firm called Play Louder. He’s basically an independent part-time Chief Financial Officer for small businesses. Where a CPA may fall short, DiSanto tries to fill the gap by making sure his clients know that he’s regularly available to provide his services and he helps them understand their books according to their level, save them money and just give them more than what they asked for. During this interview, you'll learn... The importance of a business health check The value of uncovering your client's excessive expenses How to successfully sell yourself as a bookkeeper to your future clients To find out more about Joe, click here. FIN - Funding Innovation Network is a NYC startup. FIN's goal is to help other startups be more successful, and they have created a very unique way to do so. FIN is providing a marketplace and echo system which helps connect startups with various service providers and investors.  They created a simple process which serves all participants of the echo system:A startup that wants to join, can take a free "business health test".An AI-based process gives te startup a health score from 0-100. A higher score means the startup is ready for funding. If the health score is too low, the system will provide a detailed breakdown of what should the startup improve, and suggest the relevant service providers, which can help them improve the score on areas in which they have a deficiency.Once the startup receives a high enough score it will be presented as a portfolio opportunity to relevant investors on the platform. The investors receive a detailed score analysis, which also includes the steps the startup took to improve their initial score. This saves investors a significant amount of resources in the due diligence process. This interview with Adrian Deen, the founder and CEO of FIN, explains this new and promising process in detail. The Next 100 Days Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 3, 2017 38:27

Graham and Kevin chat about the results from the Business Health Check that Kevin has been running through his company, Appleby Consulting & Coaching, and discover the 5 biggest Business Health Check issues faced by small businesses The Health Check has been running for a number of months now. We first talked about it way back in episode 28. In the meantime, the results from a good number of businesses have been collected. Kevin has analysed these results and found a number of common themes are emerging. Broadly there are 5 topics that keep repeating, and these 5 things are the commonest things holding most businesses back. So, what are the biggest business health check issues? 1) Over reliance on the business owner Without the business owner many businesses will grind to a halt. We discuss the steps you can take to systemise and delegate core tasks so that someone else can do them reliably and consistently. We also discuss a great toll you can use to identify the things that you, the business owner, need to step away from. 2) Sales and marketing aren't a core competence Most business owners start a business because they are passionate about something or have deep specialist skills. Often their skill set doesn't include sales and marketing. We talk about the right way to go about getting professional help with sales and marketing, and the importance of making sure marketing strategy is a subset of business strategy. 3) There's a problem with the business strategy The Business Health Check reveals two things about strategy. Many businesses don't have a business strategy or plan, and don't have a clear direction. Others might have a great vision, but the gap between vision and reality is so big they don't know what to do to get to their destination. 4) Good processes and systems are needed Many Entrepreneurs are fast starters, and they are quick to launch. Often they are away implementing the next idea before the last one is properly bedded down. The systems and processes needed to support a growing business are not put in place and sooner or later this comes back to bite. We discuss the need for a strong foundation if a business wants to scale, and why the first 100 days of scaling a business shouldn't focus on getting more sales, but rather fix the support systems first. 5) The business owner is worried about cash flow The commonest theme in the Business Health Check is cashflow. Most business owners worry about whether they have enough cash to meet commitments. There's plenty you can do about cashflow if its a real business health check issue for you. We discussed these in detail way back in episode 11, managing cashflow with Hayley Chiba. Not taken the Business Health Check yet? Why not try it out today? Every new insight you can get into your own business has to be worthwhile, especially if you don't have to pay for it. Go over to www.applebyconsulting.co.uk and give it a try. Find out what your own business health check issues are and start doing something about them today. The Next 100 Days Podcast is brought to you by Graham Arrowsmith and Kevin Appleby

Graham and Kevin discuss the business tools they use on a day to day basis to produce the podcast, build websites and maximise returns from social media. We mentioned lots of business tools in the episode, so here are links to each of them. Business tools we use for creating images Canva - Online simple graphic design www.canva.com Gimp - Open Source image manipulation software for Mac, Windows & Linux https://www.gimp.org/ (very powerful, but the user interface isn't as intuitive as photoshop) Affinity photo is the mac app Kevin uses to do more complex photo manipulation, its downloadable from the Mac app store at £39.95, and has loads of features that are aimed at professional photographers but at a way lower price than photoshop. We mentioned Jessica Rae's extensive guide to getting free or very low cost images, a brilliant resource: http://bit.ly/2diKbBP Business tools we use for creating websites We use Wordpress as our platform for building websites, its open source and free. Our sites are hosted on 1&1 internet, (http://bit.ly/2cGrd58) and they include a very straightforward wizard to set up a wordpress site without downloading anything We use Divi from Elegant Themes (http://bit.ly/1px3fjD) as our standard wordpress theme, its hugely flexible and adaptable to give you whatever look and feel you want. Elegant Themes also supply other themes that deploy the Divi builder, and the builder is available as a plugin too, though we've never tried using the builder with a 3rd party theme. One of Kevin's favourite wordpress plugins is Quiz and Survey Master by Frank Corso, No need for a link, its in the wordpress plugin repository. The Business Health Check is built using this. Business tools we use for social media Kevin uses Crowdfire, (https://www.crowdfireapp.com) it is excellent to manage followers for both twitter & instagram. He uses the iPad version which is downloadable from the app store Graham uses Buffer for scheduling tweets https://buffer.com - It will also schedule posts to Facebook and Linked In Kevin moved on from Buffer to Meet Edgar. (www.meetedgar.com) Worth checking out, but now very expensive after a recent subscription hike. A lower cost alternative to Meet Edgar might be Recurpost (http://bit.ly/2dmGuur) but this is still in beta version (Kevin has been involved in the beta test). When we post links in twitter, we usually use Bitly, (https://app.bitly.com) the link shortening service. this simply reduces the number of characters in the link and is especially useful when you only have 140 characters in the entire tweet. For automation, check out IFTTT or Zapier. Business tools for Email We both use Aweber (http://bit.ly/2dww5zR) for auto responder email, any downloads we offer on the show are delivered via Aweber. Mail chimp is also a good alternative, there's little to choose between the packages. Business tools for webinars Kevin has been using Webinarjam (http://bit.ly/2ddXM0O) and so far is very impressed with this. The main issue with a webinar is the sheer number of moving parts, and though not cheap, this tool gives a great single place to keep control of everything from managing sign ups to accessing the webinar replay. We are going to do a full show about webinars in the near future, so we will explain the full power of this tool at that point. Diary and Planning Kevin mentioned Acuity Schedule (http://bit.ly/2ddG36b) as a great way of letting clients have access to your appointment diary and book sessions with you. The system optionally links to stripe, so you can accept credit card payment for the appointment when its booked. We didn't mention Goals on Track (http://bit.ly/2abqP0j) in the show, but its worthy of taking a look. Kevin has used lots of different planning and task management apps over the years. This one is his current favourite, as it allows goals to be broken down into milestones tasks and activities, allows habit tracking,

Most of us want to grow our businesses, but breaking through to the next level isn't easy. There's often a barrier in the way that's difficult to break through. Every business will be constrained in some way or other. It might be lack of business owner's time. Maybe you don't have sufficient leads, You might be running out of capacity. Our business health check helps you identify where the barrier is and lets you start the process of removing the constraint. The Business Health Check helps you maximise the market value of your business A healthy business is also a valuable business, that potentially might have a strong market value. That doesn't mean you have the intent to sell the business, but it gives you the option. Business value is a combination of lots of factors, and some of the key ones we consider in the Business Health Check are: Whether your business is standardised into specific products or is offering a service that is highly customised to the needs of each individual client Your strength of position in a specific niche & the uniqueness of your business offer The rate of growth of your business, and the ability to scale should significant new investment be available. How strongly are you, the business owner, linked to your products and services in the eyes of the customer. Whether your business is too reliant on individual customers or employees The Business Health Check helps you maximise business satisfaction Many of the things that improve the value of your business will also improve your personal satisfaction and happiness. If your  business is dependent on your direct involvement in just about everything, then this will lead to stress and worry. That doesn't mean to say that putting the right resources around you is the cure for everything.
