If you have been thinking of starting your own podcast, or you already have one and you're not sure how to improve, this is the episode for you. You have all the power you need to get your message out there, and you don't have to rely on an algorithm. You don't have to dance and point at words that are on a screen. Please don't do that. You are a beautiful, strong business owner, who has every right to express herself exactly the way she wants. In case you can't tell, I am incredibly passionate about this. So is today's guest Chelsea Riffe. Chelsea is a mindset and podcast host who specializes in helping creatives, coaches, and entrepreneurs launch, grow and monetize their podcasts. She hosts the top-rated podcast “In My Non-Expert Opinion” and got her start in broadcast journalism. Chelsea says monetizing your podcast is as easy as using it to promote your offers rather than brand deals and sponsorships. If someone listens to your podcast and then goes and books a high-ticket coaching package with you, that's monetizing your podcast. You just used a piece of content to create a new client. This is where content strategy and clear calls to action become really helpful. It actually eliminates a lot of needs for sales calls and discovery calls. And unlike social media, podcasting doesn't rely on algorithms and follower numbers. Whether you're pitching to another host or looking to collaborate, your audience numbers don't trump your ability to speak to their audience. If you can speak someone's language directly to them and show your value to their audience, numbers don't matter. Chelsea notes strategy is key when launching a business podcast. Without it, people get burnt out and experience “podfade” where they ghost their own podcast because they don't know what to talk about. She says it's also important to ensure you have systems and organization in place because starting a podcast is a big project – from writing an outline, recording, editing, and creating promotional materials. Without a system it's easy to lose momentum and become resentful of the tasks required to maintain a successful podcast. Chelsea says if she could go back and do everything again, she would do a podcast series or season when she first started out. She says with constraints on creativity – like a season or series based on a theme – you can be more focused in filling that content and it allows you to build in natural breaks. And if you are open about how your broadcast works there won't be a risk of losing your audience. If you're looking to break the toxic cycle of social media, podcasting is a great option. Your voice is literally so impactful because you can hear your personality, your tone, your inflection. So, it makes a much bigger impact than when you're scrolling and tapping and swiping amongst a sea of content. You are literally using your voice to bring your business to life. ===== Connect with Chelsea Riffe ===== Website and free consult opt-in: https://www.chelseariffe.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chelseariffe/ ===== Connect with Sarah ===== Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sarahwaltonpage Instagram: https://instagram.com/thesarahwalton Game on Girlfriend: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_Jen-dhtrcPvkgdjasgiyAk1NgPbZYRS Most business owners don't know how much money they actually need to make to feel free. We have to get our message out to more people. Speaking is a great way to add value when people can't afford to work with you or aren't interested in working with you directly. You can share the message they need to hear to move people and connect with people. We need to know that we can connect with our fellow humans. We need to know that what we are experiencing matters — and speaking is such an extraordinary way to do that. Our guest, Jenn Espinosa Goswami is a professional speaker and holistic wellness coach at Weightless. Jenn first shared her story of losing 100 pounds at Toastmasters. She took this organic experience of speaking about the struggles she went through and the mistakes she made along the way and distilled it for the people she works with. Jenn says there are people who take stories and examples and case studies and successes that they've experienced in their own life and pay it forward to people in their audience who are ready for that message. “It's a very humbling experience to say, “Oh, I could impact other people just by sharing something that I experienced in my life.' I think that's the most powerful thing you can talk about,” she said. She says speaking is not an identity and you don't need any marketing collateral to become a speaker. You just have to do it. If you don't have an audience to consistently speak to, deliver value to someone else's audience. Jenn helps people identify topics and understand the speaking cycle of promoting yourself, pitching yourself, and how to make connections when you need to find your audience. She notes that one of the hardest things you'll do once you've decided to become a speaker is choose your single signature topic. When event planners are looking for speakers, they won't necessarily care about your name or where you've been featured — they're going to choose your topic first. So, if your topic isn't amazing and doesn't fit what they're looking for, they're not going to hire you. That doesn't mean your story or topic isn't profound. One of the great things about speaking is that it gives us the ability not only to self-reflect, but also to learn and share in a way that anyone can understand. And speaking can help business owners in different ways. Jenn says she has clients who want to get paid to speak and leave, whereas others don't need to get paid to speak, but want to sell their programs. No matter which goal you have, Jenn breaks down some tips for applying to speaking opportunities and what you need to get started. Let's get to it. ===== Mentioned ===== Jenn has made it easy to get started with knowing exactly what you need in your Signature Speech with this free template, including an outline and how to determine what makes your speech successful. How do you decide what's “next” for you, without falling into the trap of doing something because it's what you've always done...or it's what is expected of you. Or, even worse, sticking with something because doing something different would look like failure to others. COVID has shifted life and business ownership for so many of us, and one of the gifts it's given us is the ability to see what's important to us. Time with family, taking care of our mental health, doing what lights us up (AND makes us a living) all come to mind. This week on the podcast, Julie Fry is sharing why she sold her profitable and growing business, what prompted her to start her current business, and what she did in between. (Spoiler alert: She got a j - o - b. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Promise!) Just because you're doing something now doesn't mean you have to do it forever. Our businesses change as we grow, and our lives and circumstances change as we get older. It's time we embrace that change and make decisions that fit where we are and where we want to be. Are you ready? Tune in now! About Julie Fry: Julie Fry is the founder of Your Expert Guest, a podcast publicity and booking agency. Her secret sauce is creating meaningful connections between people that become clients, collaborators, resources, mentors, and friends. The Government has launched an inquiry into the $2 billion fishing industry to increase the number of New Zealand workers and reduce reliance on migrant labour. It comes after Covid-19 and border restrictions highlighted how reliant the fishing industry had become on foreign labour, particularly when crews of Russian fishers were controversially brought in last year.In the year ending March 2019 there were 1850 migrant workers in the sector, or about 20 per cent. In some areas, such as deep-sea fishing, there were vessels that were 100 per cent foreign-crewed.Oceans and Fisheries Minister David Parker said the inquiry would focus on the sector's reliance on migrant labour, and how to transition it away."It will also examine how to accelerate efforts to attract more New Zealanders into rewarding jobs in the seafood sector."It will take in all commercial seafood activities, including deep-sea fishing, inshore fishing, aquaculture activities, and seafood processing."The inquiry would not look at working conditions, because all foreign labour in the industry was already under New Zealand employment and health and safety laws.Parker said Covid-19 border restrictions had highlighted the sector's vulnerability due to its reliance on migrant labour. That has sped up efforts to increase New Zealanders' participation in the sector, he said."Some businesses in the sector have reduced their reliance on migrant workers since border restrictions were imposed, but some deep-sea vessels, in particular, are still 100 per cent foreign-crewed," Parker said."The inquiry will do a stocktake of the current state of the seafood sector's workforce and determine what a more resilient seafood workforce – with a greater proportion of New Zealanders – could look like, and how this might be achieved."Oceans and Fisheries Minister David Parker said the inquiry would focus on the sector's reliance on migrant labour, and how to transition it away. Photo / Kevin StentNew Zealand Institute of Economic Research principal economist Peter Wilson would chair the inquiry, with a report due October 29.Joining Wilson would be an expert in the seafood sector, Greg Johansson, and former Treasury official Julie Fry. The seafood sector would be involved throughout.Industry group Seafood New Zealand welcomed the inquiry, a spokeswoman said."The industry is well aware of the desire of Government to reduce migrant workers across many sectors and the seafood industry is already engaged with Government on a plan to transition more New Zealanders into the industry," she said."That transition will be challenging and take time but we look forward to the inquiry's recommendations into how we can reduce our reliance on migrant labour and how automation and innovation might play a role in that."Parker also signalled moves to improve the environmental impacts of the seafood sector."Doing this takes innovation and fresh ideas. To that end, I'll be working together with industry on a transformation plan that will set a path towards these goals."Recently the Government announced new protection measures for the Hauraki Gulf, progress on the wider rollout of cameras to inshore fishing vessels, and new rules about discarding and what fish must be landed.A government response to the recent report by the Prime Minister's chief science adviser into fisheries would also be made public this year, he said. The seafood sector is not the only one struggling with the Covid-19 border restrictions. This week Meat Industry Association chief executive Sirma Karapeeva told the Primary Production Committee, which is conducting an inquiry into the future workforce needs of the primary industries, a shortage of halal butchers could see billions of dollars of export earnings lost. The industry overall was short more than 2000 workers both skilled and unskilled this year, she said.In particular, the industry needed about 250 halal butchers each season, but New Zealand had only a...

“The session I had with Nikki pointed me to what questions to ask in my discovery calls.” Listen, as Nikki and her guest Julie Fry of Your Expert Guest discuss a sales success story that resulted from her on-air coaching call with Nikki on episode 19, How to Make Your Consultation Calls Easier, one of Nikki’s most downloaded episodes so far, plus much more on this episode of the Sales Maven Show. Listen as Julie shares how she works with clients, tracks podcast results for those clients, and how she felt about consultation calls before she did the on-air coaching call with Nikki. After the coaching call, she is more confident, and her results have been amazing. All she did was listen to what Nikki had to say and adjust the language to the questions. If your consultations are not landing the way you want them to land, you need to have a script and have the questions in front of you. Nikki believes that by getting the answer you need from the questions, you will be able to recommend the right solution. Are you struggling with consultation calls? Julie says that if you are a Sales Maven Society member, put yourself out there, and get on one of Nikki’s on-air coaching calls; it will increase your business. It did hers, and she couldn’t be happier with the results. If you find value in this podcast and want to ignite your sales, Nikki wants to invite you to join her Sales Maven Society. Do you find that your consultation/discovery calls are the hardest part of the sales process? This episode is an on-air coaching call with one of Nikki’s good friends, a longtime accountability partner, and a Sales Maven Society member, Julie Fry. Julie needs some support around her consultation/discovery calls and how to have the most successful outcome possible. Julie shares about her company called Your Expert Guest, which helps you leverage podcast guesting to grow your business. Nikki shares some questions she believes Julie should ask during her discovery calls and reminds her to never coach during a discovery call because you can potentially lose clients. Would rather invest time or money into accomplishing your goal? Nikki believes that many entrepreneurs that offer discovery calls do not ask the right questions, which can keep you from getting to the meat of what the client is needing. Every question that is asked is a way to lead the client down a path to hiring you, so you need to be strategic in what you ask. Julie speaks about some benefits she has received from being a member of the Sales Maven Society. The quality of people that are members and the way Nikki goes above and beyond serving her members. Julie says that if you aren’t a member, you should be. Nikki works her magic and gives us all insights into what we can do to make our discovery calls better and more successful. In This Episode: [01:10] Welcome to the show, Julie! [01:37] Julie shares a little about her background and new business. [03:34] Julie discusses the new company that she recently launched. [04:22] Nikki says that podcast guesting is the number one source of new leads. [06:52] Julie would like Nikki’s help to make sure she is framing what she is doing on her website correctly and help with the discovery call process. [08:08] Are you using the podcast guest assessment call as a discovery call? [10:32] You don’t want to coach during a discovery call. [12:21] Nikki suggests that you pre-frame the reason for the call. [13:46] Nikki shares some questions she feels Julie should ask during the discovery call. [16:10] Do you already know how to leverage your network for connections to potential podcast hosts? [17:23] Nikki says that the questions she suggests are all about leading them down the path to hiring you. [19:50] It’s been Nikki’s experience that many entrepreneurs that are offering a discovery are not asking the right questions. [22:01] Julie shares that people who have booked strategy sessions with her are people who have heard what she does or received an introductory email. Do you have your sights set on a conference or event that you want to speak at? How can you increase your chances of being chosen? Today I talk with Julie Fry, the owner of Business Among Moms, and the Business Among Moms Success Summit. Julie tells us her best Do’s and Don’ts around the process of applying to speak. We also talk about how to get the most out of attending a conference, what to think about in advance, and who you might want to speak with.
Julie Fry and I talk about how she has grown her business while pivoting her business model and communicating with team members all over the world. A chance encounter at a dog park and a love of change took Julie Fry on a path from the Chuck-It dog toy company to creating the international networking group Business among Moms. It’s not a straight line, there was a lot of trial and changes along the way. Change, growth, and scaling can be a scary thing, setting up and checking in on the way that you communicate with your team, and your clients is essential. There will be stumbles along the way, but don’t let fear hold you back. When we are open, invite feedback, and acknowledge missteps or weaknesses, we can move past our upper limit fears and grow our resilience. What you’ll hear in this podcast: Build processes along the way Be willing to Shift Learn through trial and error Automate as much as you can Use time-savers such as a swipe file with often used verbiage and links Pre-frame for potential team members so they can know what to expect Get feedback from clients and your community Meet regularly and have a question and answer period Fear can be an upper limit problem, if you do not push through it you will remain stagnant Fear can focus your mind and motivate you and will lead to building resilience Know how your team members like to communicate, phone, email, slack, text, etc Record processes so that team members can ‘learn on demand’ Resources: Business Among Mom’s Difficult Happens – How Triggers, Boundaries, and Emotions Impact You Everyday Shelli Warren – Stacking your Team Show Intro music is Whispering Through by Asura

4 years ago, Julie Fry was fed up with too much travel and not enough control of her schedule or her family life. She left her corporate sales job and decided to buy a blog, BusinessAmongMoms.com to have more control over her life and spend more time with her kids. She quickly learned she was way too extroverted for a purely online company and pivoted to serve women entrepreneurs with community, education, and support for their businesses through networking and educational events. Since then, Business Among Moms or BAM, has grown to 20 chapters across the country, and nearly 1000 members. Along the way Julie has learned about herself and the power of connecting women. She has created something she truly loves and that fuels her mind and her soul. While Julie has been busy growing her dream and serving women all over the country, she has also learned how to best serve herself as she lives valiantly with blood chronic lymphocytic leukemia. I so appreciate Julie coming on the show to talk about building her dream business and building a life she loves around a life with cancer.
