Episode 576: Network or Route Building Games Episode release date is April 30, 2025 Show Notes This week we kick off our discussion of games that involve network building. The "network building mechanic" refers to the gameplay element where players construct and expand interconnected systems, often representing transportation, communication, and resource distribution. It's about establishing links and leveraging those connections for strategic advantage. Some of the main concepts of network and route building include: Connectivity: The fundamental element of establishing links between nodes, such as locations, cities, or points of interest. These links from a network. Expansion: Players progressively expand their network, reaching new destinations and making further connections. Expansion is often tied to resource management, technology advancement, or through fulfilling objectives. Strategic advantage: A well-developed network provides: efficient resource movement, faster travel or delivery, control over locations, increased scoring opportunities, and influence over other game elements. Player interdependence: Networks can create interdependence between players, either through competition for resources and routes or through cooperative efforts. Come join us at the game table where we are going to talk about networking games, and I bet it includes more than train games. They say everything is bigger in Texas. The bluster, the egos, the steaks, the belt buckles. You name it, we can supersize it. But bigger comes with its problems — big commitments, big disappointments, big failures and big consequences among them. This week we will discuss big faith and why you should be trying to find it; big dreams that have always characterized the Lone Star State; big work from the greatest composer you've never heard of; and the big version of an old favorite. Hal Hammons is the preacher for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He is the host of the Citizen of Heaven podcast. You are encouraged to seek him and the Lakewoods Drive church through Facebook and other social media. Lakewoods Drive is an autonomous group of Christians dedicated to praising God, teaching the gospel to all who will hear, training Christians in righteousness, and serving our God and one another faithfully. We believe the Bible is God's word, that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, that heaven is our home, and that we have work to do here while we wait. Regular topics of discussion and conversation include: Christians, Jesus, obedience, faith, grace, baptism, New Testament, Old Testament, authority, gospel, fellowship, justice, mercy, faithfulness, forgiveness, Twenty Pages a Week, Bible reading, heaven, hell, virtues, character, denominations, submission, service, character, COVID-19, assembly, Lord's Supper, online, social media, YouTube, Facebook.

Episode 110 - Kompromat, Heroes of Land, Air and Sea, Dawn of the Zeds On this episode Steve and our Sydney Team (Sarah and Mitch) pose the question: If you only could only have 10 games in your collection - how would you structure it, what games would you include, and how do you cull your collection down to just ten? In our Sizzling Games, Sarah has been a Blackjack-playing spy in Kompromat, Steve has revisited the 4X epicness in Heroes of Land, Air & Sea, and Mitch has been exploring the complexities of the later levels in Dawn of the Zeds. We wrap up last week's Bracket Battle match-up (Under Falling Skies vs Clans of Caledonia), and we set up the next duel: Teotihuacan vs Nemo's War. Finally in Swear An Oath, Steve enjoyed the Uwe Rosenberg classic Le Havre. Sarah is continuing to play all of her unplayed games in 2020, still working on her 10x10 Challenge, and also managed to play Stephenson's Rocket. Meanwhile Mitch has every excuse under the sun as to why he still hasn't played Star Wars: Rebellion. New oaths for the team are Bonfire (Sarah), Hallertau (Steve), and to complete all levels of Dawn of the Zeds (Mitch). Sizzling Games: Kompromat (03:20), Heroes of Land, Air & Sea (09:50), Dawn of the Zeds (27:20) Topic of the Week: Curating A 10-game Collection (44:00) Bracket Battle 2.0: Teotihuacan vs Nemo's War (01:14:00) Swear An Oath (1:39:45) **BOARD GAME BBQ GAME DAY** Join us for the first Board game BBQ Day to be held in Melbourne! The movie Back to the Future Part III helped me write financial goals with a timeline. Plus an update from the first two weeks of May 2020: medical narration practice, auditioning, my new website, playing Ticket to Ride, and more! Mentioned in this episode Back to the Future Part III is a great movie! Dave Ramsey is an American businessman who created a money management course called Financial Peace University Building a Story Brand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald Miller The Power of Broke: How Empty Pockets, a Tight Budget, and a Hunger for Success Can Become Your Greatest Competitive Advantage by Daymond John LinkedIn Profile linkedin.com/in/kimnewlove LinkedIn Company Page linkedin.com/company/thepharmacistsvoice LinkedIn Podcast Page linkedin.com/company/tpvpodcast Facebook https://www.facebook.com/kim.newlove.96 Twitter https://twitter.com/KimNewloveVO voiceactorwebsites.com is updating my website Sean Pratt is my audiobook narration coach seanprattpresents.com Medipreneurs https://www.medipreneurs.com Ticket to Ride https://www.daysofwonder.com/tickettoride/en/usa/ Westgate Toastmasters Club https://3159.toastmastersclubs.org The last two weeks have been interesting! If you missed the last solo episode, here’s a super-quick recap. My husband lost his job two weeks ago, on Friday, May 1. His position was eliminated as a reduction in force (RIF). He’s agreed to be a stay-at-home Dad while I run my voiceover business full-time. For years, I have felt like life was holding me back. I wanted to work, but I couldn’t. It really sucks that something negative had to impact my husband’s job to give me the chance I needed, but there’s nothing holding me back now! I am excited for the opportunity. My husband is being very supportive. And, I love what I’m doing. I’m excited to grow my business! You might be wondering why I don’t just find a traditional pharmacist job. There are a number of reasons. The biggest one is that for the past 2.5 years, I have been training to do voiceover work, and now I have the chance to do it. Plus, I need to see how much income I can bring in over the next six months, and my husband needs to see what kind of jobs are out there for him. Speaking of money, my husband and I had a “talk.” It ended up having a Back to the Future Part III theme to it, which at least made it kinda fun. We set income goals and assigned them to a timeline. We got out the colored pencils and added green, yellow, and red marks on the timeline. Because my husband and I have a “budget meeting” every two weeks, we know exactly where our money goes. We figured out how much monthly income we need to survive. We are “Dave Ramsey People.” We graduated from Financial Peace University in March of 2013. Thanks to the program, we are excellent money managers, and our spending behaviors are well-controlled. Essentially, we figured out how long we can afford for my husband to stay unemployed while I build my voiceover business. We wrote down how much money I need to earn by December 2020, and every six months after that. If I’m not on track to support the family fully by January 2022, my husband needs to be employed again. It can take a while to find a job, so he’s thinking about next steps NOW. Back to the movie reference. We know it’s ok for me to work full-time as a voice actor right now, and we know when it will be time for one or both of us to try something else. We will be ok until December. Then, the scary times are going to come a little faster…just like that train in Back to the Future Part III. What have I been doing, other than setting goals and playing with colored pencils? Here are the highlights Practicing medical narration skills Direct-marketing to potential clients Auditioning Expanding my LinkedIn network Signed up for two voiceover pay-to-play sites. (They connect clients and voiceover professionals.) Participated in some webinars Finished two books: Story Brand by Donald Miller and The Power of Broke by Daymond John. Updated my LinkedIn “about” section with my Brand Story Audiobook narration lessons with Sean Pratt. I will “graduate” in August. Updated my social media banners: LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Got a sneak peak of my new website Met with my voiceover accountability buddies on-line Attended an on-line Mastermind with Medipreneurs co-founders Michelle Fritsch and Sue Paul and a group of bright and enthusiastic healthcare entrepreneurs Played Ticket to Ride Europe, Switzerland, and Japan Attended Toastmasters via Zoom Working on an on-line course! May is turning out to be an interesting month! I’m working on my voiceover business full time, plugging away at goals, having fun with my family, and trying new things. I have a feeling a lot is going to happen in the next two weeks, and I’ll fill you in on Friday, May 29!
Choo-choo!! This looks like a great skill to compliment the popular board game; Ticket to Ride Europe. Also available in a less Euro-centric flavour, both board games are available from Amazon and might be just the thing to really blow your whistle.

This episode ended up being a little bit longer because we were having a lot of fun in our Broader View, so hopefully you enjoy the extra content! The category this week is cooperative games, and both of our cooperative games that we’re talking about have an island theme: Robinson Crusoe and Spirit Island. In our Broader View, we continue with the island theme and we discuss what three games (or as Jameson insists three games and a deck of cards) would we bring to a desert island. We also all cheat and sneak in an honorable mention. The panel unearths three more games in this week’s episode: First – our cities thrive or crumble to the thundering roll of dice in Machi Koro! Then . . . we rush to lay the best routes across Europe in Ticket to Ride. Finally: picky customers demand tasty treats in Just Desserts!
Každý má rád vláčiky. A kto ich nemá rád, nenašiel správny vláčik, ktorý sa mu bude páčiť. V treťom dieli vám predstavím hru, ktorá by mala patriť do každej police. Ticket to Ride: Europe.
The Board Boys took a nice vacation this week heading across the pond in Ticket to Ride Europe. From the craggy hillsides of Edinburgh to the sunlit docks of Constantinople, the boys saw it all; laying track and pounding cold ones along the way with help from Des Moines area photographer, Dani Reed. During their travels the boys also recommend some of their favorite 'gateway' games and the toys they loved growing up! Show of hands, who else owned a balancing eagle?
It's the first ever completely "in-person" recording of the podcast, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) gathered round a table to speak into microphones about games we've been playing over a weekend together. We've been faffing about with a Ricoh Theta S, so we discuss the practical merits of 360 images and video, as well as how that medium might translate into a horror movie. It's not all high technology chat, as we talk about our experiences with the massive Lord of the Rings tabletop game War of the Ring, we walk through our most recent RPG tale of the fantastic Dread, and argue that Dark Stories is the best worst game. We've also been playing a lot of the Ticket to Ride app while in different parts of the UK, which we contrast with our time with Ticket to Ride Europe which we also played that weekend. As if that weren't enough, there's details of a trip to Greece, the worrying song lyrics found in Grease, Greek country line dancing, and a new contender for best crisp (also from Greece). And hey, we played oh so many more games over the weekend than we got to talk about, but we snapped loads of photos of them using the camera and uploaded them to Twitter. Pop on over to @StayingInPod to see images of Oh My Goods!, Colt Express, Ticket to Ride Europe, Flick 'Em Up, Captain Sonar, and Star Realms. You can even find moments of us recording and setting up, plus if you pop on over to our YouTube channel you can watch an unedited 360 video clip from the recording. If you've got a VR headset you can physically look around the room as we record, and if you don't you can still use a mouse to navigate about!
