THE DEVIL'S MOUTH Vol. 138: a conversation with Mlny Parsonz (Royal Thunder)

Mental issues rarely manifest themselves in a visible way to others. In fact, rarely do they “make sense” to an outsider's perspective, even. How often, for instance, have we all been shocked and surprised when something tragic happens with a public figure because of something related to depression? Even outside of public figures as such, and in other, not art-related professions, in these days of social media exposure, everyone seems even happier and satisfied all the time than usual. No matter how the outside looks, however, a lot of things might be going on. with someone. So it's important to be honest. To speak out, to share your experiences, so that others might relate and realise they're not alone, they're not weird and they're not broken. That was exactly the starting point for this very honest and very raw conversation with Mlny Parsonz, the amazing frontwoman for Royal Thunder. After two high-profile shows at the prestigious Roadburn Festival, which seemed to highlight the brilliance of their comeback – in every way - record ‘Rebuilding The Mountain', you would imagine spirits to be high among all band members for a while. In the case of Mlny, half of the crucial core of the band alongside guitarist Josh Weaver, not everything was okay. Expectations, self-worth, dealing with your own shortcomings. We all feel this, and sometimes it's hard to see the light with all these shadows dancing around us. So what follows is, in Mel's own words, “an honest interview about imposter syndrome and self worth and self deprecation and finding hope and healing after a severe personal, emotional beat down.” The bassist and singer, who already participated on a couple of The Devil's Mouth's features like the Ten Rounds or when we did our 100th episode specials, told us a few weeks ago she did “really want to open up about humility and change and change with time and age in music,” so we naturally gave her all the space and time she needed to do so. Let's listen to her.

Andrew Corson's Fathoming Heavy podcast was seminal for what Jeff and Ben have aspired Endless Metal to become--namely, a place where both deep appreciation for heavy music and shared bonds of friendship could happen effortlessly and without the typical boundaries associated with the traditional interview format. While Fathoming Heavy has been on an indefinite hiatus, it was a true gift to hear Andrew reflect on the experience as whole. And he shares thoughts on some memorable interviews, including an epic dialogue with the great Mike Scheidt of Yob. This dialogue also takes a most welcome detour into our shared love for the late and great Leonard Cohen (among other heavy off ramps). We also learn about Andrew's recent trip to the Roadburn Festival! Occurring annually in April in the Dutch city of Tilburg, he shares how his ninth Roadburn experience differed in exciting ways. Specifically, the festival has evolved away from stacking lineups with established bands into showcasing some of the most fascinating, truly underground artists in heavy music. Andrew shares with us songs from two of his favorite new discoveries from this year's fest--the captivating folk drone worlds of ambient viola player and vocalist Allison Cotton. We listen to a portion of a composition from her latest record The Portrait You Painted of Me (2022 Rocket Recordings). And then plunge into a stunning work of oppressive heavy, almost ritual industrial from Mütterlein. Another solo artist whose latest album Bring Down the Flags (2021 Eitrin Editions) has quickly become a new favorite of ours. We were also excited to listen to a snippet from the great Ufomammut's latest record album Fenice (Neurot 2022)--another one Andrew has been spinning a lot lately.

The band? Wyatt E. The guys? Joe, Martin and me. The experience? Mind-blowing. Veil of Sound HAD to get an interview with the guys! Even months after the release of āl bēlūti dārû (you can find our review here), the record gets spun here a lot, because the record is mesmerizing, enchanting and haunting - and all of that in a literal sense! We were very fortunate to sit down with Sébastien and talk about the concept behind the band, the prejudices of cultural appropriation the band has to face at times, his non-knowledge of Jazz and why he loves Roadburn Festival so much! The increasing openness of Rob Halford is celebrated, and the biggest parallel between the life of the gay man and the metalhead is revealed thanks to Beastmilk's modern classic Climax, on the latest LGBT+ take on heavy metal. Matt and Tom discuss how heavy metal's most prominent gay musician – the Metal God himself, Rob Halford – has got more open and frank in his discussion of his sexuality, and why that is important. We explain why it matters that the LGBT+ community can discuss sex as freely as straight folks, and how Halford is helping that happen. The superb debut album by Beastmilk (now Grave Pleasures) is this week's Camp Classic, as we share the surprising common ground between the metal fan going to a show, and a queer person going to a gay bar – and what that has to do with a post-punk band that extreme audiences like Roadburn Festival immediately embraced. Plus there's the usual gushing and bickering in the Hate Crew Gaybar, where the latest additions to the jukebox are Lost In The Waves by Landmvrks, and The Crown's latest album Royal Destroyer. There's also some follow-up on the relative gayness of cocktails, another shocking confession about gaps in Matt's blockbuster movie viewing, and some gossip about who Tom wants to take his shirt off more in the new series of Line Of Duty. It’s Riot Act’s first official special, and in the time-honoured tradition of shouting about the things we’re passionate about, we’ve decided to dedicate 90 minutes to the very special and unique Roadburn festival. Taking place annually in the serene city of Tilburg in The Netherlands, Roadburn seeks to constantly explore and push the boundaries of what heavy music is. From the sonically pulverising likes of Thou or At The Gates to the thematically weighty themes of Emma Ruth Rundle or Anna Von Hausswolff, Roadburn is a 4-day haven that actively works with the artists they host in order to bring patrons one-of-a-kind shows that have never been seen before and in many cases, will likely never be seen again.Remfry sat down with Queen of Roadburn (perhaps not her official title) Becky Laverty to discuss Roadburn’s history, her experiences of the festival as a punter, and they try to pin down exactly what it is about Roadburn that has made it such an extraordinary place for heavy music fans for almost 20 years.
