Am 28. Mai 2014 flog Alexander Gerst als dritter deutscher Astronaut zur Raumstation ISS. Jahrelanges Training, Vorbereiten, Testen, Lernen und endlos viele ärztliche Untersuchungen lagen hinter ihm. Gegen 8.400 Mitbewerber hatte er sich durchsetzen müssen! Aber dann, am 28. Mai, war es so weit. Allerdings, bevor Gerst in die Sojus-Rakete einsteigen durfte, musste er erst noch einige allerletzte – und zum Teil reichlich seltsame – Dinge erledigen.

Orion – das ist der Name des nächsten Raumschiffes, das Menschen zum Mond bringen wird. Astronaut Alexander Gerst erklärt, wie dieses Raumschiff aufgebaut ist, wo die Astronaut:innen sitzen und was im Raumschiff auf keinen Fall fehlen darf. Und dann zeigt er mithilfe eines Modells noch, wie weit der Mond von der Erde entfernt ist. Im Vergleich zur Raumstation ISS ist das ein ganz schön langer Weg… Wie wird ein Raumschiff gebaut? Im zweiten Teil der Sachgeschichte besucht Alexander Gerst eine Firma in Bremen, in der ein Teil des Orion-Raumschiffs hergestellt wird. In einem „Rein-Raum“, in dem strenge Hygiene-Vorschriften gelten, schaut er sich die einzelnen Bauplätze ganz genau an – vom Rohbau bis hin zur äußeren Hülle des Raumschiffs. Und er verrät, wie das Raumschiff nach der Mission eigentlich wieder vom Mond weg kommt… Im dritten Teil der Sachgeschichte geht es darum, wie der Flug zum Mond abläuft und warum eine solche Mission wichtig ist. Doch bevor es überhaupt losgehen kann, wird ein Testflug mit Dummys gemacht. Gerst blijkt gemiddeld 50 procent meer te groeien als het wortelsysteem van de plantjes elektrisch gestimuleerd wordt.   Het zou volgens de wetenschappers één van de oplossingen kunnen zijn in een tijd waar een groeiende populatie en klimaatverandering het moeilijk maken om voldoende voedsel voor iedereen te produceren.  In dit geval is gekeken naar het kweken van planten zonder daarbij grond te gebruiken. De plantjes groeien in zo'n geval in een gesloten systeem van water en voedingsstoffen, waarbij wel een geschikte ondergrond nodig is als houvast voor de wortels.   Voor deze experimenten ontwikkelden de onderzoekers een elektrisch geleidende ondergrond, gemaakt van cellulose en polymeer. Daarmee konden ze de wortels voorzichtig elektrisch stimuleren tijdens het groeiproces. Dit zou ervoor hebben gezorgd dat gerst in 15 dagen zo'n 50 procent meer groeide.   Het biologische proces hierachter moeten de onderzoekers nog wel uitpluizen. De jonge plantjes lijken efficiënter om te gaan met stikstof, maar hoe dit wordt beïnvloed door elektriciteit is nog niet duidelijk. Blessed Franz Jägerstätter was an Austrian conscientious objector during WWII. He was imprisoned and eventually executed for refusing to fight for the Nazis or swear an oath of allegiance to Hitler. In 2007 he was officially declared a martyr by Pope Benedict XVI and was later beatified. His story has inspired many who have been pressured to behave in a manner contradictory to their faith.
