"Stories are emotional, and when you connect with people emotionally, it sticks." Stories are the master teacher of the world. Over the years, I've seen firsthand that facts may fade, but a good story that is told with feeling and authenticity will stick with you forever. Today, we took that idea to the next level, gathering at UCF's Rosen College of Hospitality Management for our first ever “Stories That Work” workshop. Jody sparked the idea, and it was a great one. We brought together Disney veterans and leaders like Bob Allen, Rick Allen, and Djuan Rivers, all with stories that reach deep into Disney's history and heart. What I've found is that every cast member and guest has a story. Those stories shape how we learn, lead, and serve. Whether it's a family returning to Walt Disney World for generations, or a cast member sharing their challenges and triumphs, there's always a lesson wrapped inside. The stories we share aren't just for entertainment—they're teaching tools. They spark emotion, create connections, and help us remember the lessons that matter most. It's not enough to just know the facts or have the right degree; you've got to keep learning and collecting stories from those around you. That knowledge, shared through stories, is what makes you memorable and effective, whether you're leading a large operation or just making someone's day a little brighter. Stay committed to learning and telling stories. The more you grow, the more magic you bring to others. In this episode, Jennifer talks to Alesha Cid-Vega, who shares her journey as an international student coming to the US to pursue theater which ultimately led her to explore the intersection of psychology and the arts. They explore her current research in mental health and wellness that focuses on building systems of care and promoting accessibility in the arts community. They emphasize the importance of a collaborative approach, training non-specialist providers, and creating a culture of care with the goal of strengthening support systems to make mental health accessibility a priority for artists through task-sharing models and developing strategies for daily life. About Alesha: Alesha is a current graduate Psychology student at The New School for Social Research in the Trauma & Global Mental Health Lab. Born and raised in Spain, she moved to the U.S. to pursue a career in musical theatre. After the twists and bends of navigating the performing arts conservatory system and its barriers for international and low/middle-income students, she enrolled in the Entertainment Management program at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management in the University of Central Florida, aiming to make a change toward equity in the arts industry. As the Covid-19 pandemic hit, with the heart of an artist and a deep growing concern for global and mental health, she transferred to Sarah Lawrece College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts concentrating in Performing Arts and Public Health. Alesha is currently developing projects to design and implement accessible mental health programs tailored for performing artists, through community models. Before joining The New School, she worked in direct services with refugees and asylum seekers with HIAS New York and has served as a Spanish translator and interpreter for community-based immigration organizations. More recently, she completed a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support fellowship with the International Rescue Committee's Technical Advising Health Unit. Mitchell Davis is founder of the consultancy Kitchen Sense, LLC, a laboratory for creative food content and innovative approaches to food-system issues. Throughout his long career in the food world, Mitchell has been “a central figure behind the scenes helping to start, analyze and oversee trends, developing the next generation of talent,” according to chef and media personality David Chang. While at the James Beard Foundation for almost 27 years, most recently as Chief Strategy Officer, Mitchell created and oversaw many of the Foundation's most impactful initiatives, including the annual JBF Food Summit, a national dialogue of thought leaders on sustainability and public health, the JBF Chefs Boot Camp for Policy and Change, an advocacy training program for culinary professionals, and the JBF Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership program, intended to correct the gender imbalance in leadership in the restaurant industry. Working with artist Mattia Casalegno and the team at Unapologetic Foods, Davis co-produced Aeorobanquets RMX, the world's first fully immersive, mixed-reality dining experience that was installed in the James Beard House for a sold-out, three-month run in 2019. The Washington Post called Aerobanquets “the future of restaurants.” In 2013, Davis led the team that was selected by the U.S. Department of State to create the USA Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015—the first world's fair since 1862 focusing on food—for which he received visits and commendations from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and First Lady Michelle Obama. Davis has a Ph.D. in Food Studies from New York University. He has been a curriculum advisor to and/or guest lecturer at the Florence University for the Arts and their Apicius International School of Hospitality, the Cornell School of Hotel Administration, the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, the Institute for Culinary Education, The French Culinary Institute, and the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners. He frequently writes about food and restaurants, and has a weekly Substack newsletter on home-cooking. For more than a decade he held a chair on the Academy of the London-based World's 50 Best Restaurants. He has written several cookbooks, including the ground-breaking electronic book My Provence (Alta Editions) with Michelin three-star chef Laurent Gras, which won the IACP's “Judges' Choice” award in 2013, and Kitchen Sense (Clarkson Potter, 2006). In 2013, The Forward selected Davis as one of the 50 most influential Jews under 50 in America. In 2017 epicurious.com included Davis on their list of the “100 Greatest Home Cooks of All Time.” For his contributions to the ever-changing food landscape and his tenure as host of more than 125 episodes of the popular podcast Taste Matters, in 2019 Heritage Radio Network inducted Davis into their Hall of Fame. Most recently, Mitchell began hosting the “What's Burning” podcast, a podcast of the Galilee Culinary Institute. On this episode, Mitchell shares his one way ticket to the famed 3 star Michelin restaurant, La Pyramide, in Vienne France, sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s. He also offers his list of “10 Memorable Meals” to mark our show's 10th anniversary this year. Plus, Mitchell highlights “What's Burning”, the podcast of the Galilee Culinary Institute which is set to open in early 2023 in Israel's Upper Eastern Galilee. Mitchell is just one of the engaging personalities featured on The One Way Ticket Show, where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back. Their destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Steven's guests have included: Nobel Peace Prize Winner, President Jose Ramos-Horta; Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett; Law Professor, Alan Dershowitz; Fashion Expert, Tim Gunn; Broadcast Legend, Charles Osgood; International Rescue Committee President & CEO, David Miliband; Former Senator, Joe Lieberman; Playwright, David Henry Hwang; Journalist-Humorist-Actor, Mo Rocca; SkyBridge Capital Founder & Co-Managing Partner, Anthony Scaramucci; Abercrombie & Kent Founder, Geoffrey Kent; Travel Expert, Pauline Frommer, as well as leading photographers, artists, chefs, writers, intellectuals, etc.

Jody and I are doing something a little different today. We are an in-person recording from Rosen College of Hospitality. Today is a milestone for us, as we record episode 350. After almost seven years, if there is something I have learned about digital communication, it is that it is a great tool and it is here to stay. Take podcasts for example. Podcasts are not just for talking about one topic anymore. They can be used by an organization for internal communication. It is a powerful medium that you can use to share wins, updates and help reinforce company culture in short, but powerful episodes. You can use it to connect weekly with your team. Another tool that we have learned to use, especially over the last 18 months, is video messaging tools like Zoom or Skype. They may take a while to get used to, but their potential is impressive. Whether it is a meeting with your team or a presentation for a conference, these video conferencing tools allow you to connect with many people in a way that can feel very personal. I find some of my most useful best practices for video conferencing are the simplest. If you want to be effective, make sure you are honest. Cover the real issues. Don't just have meetings for the sake of meetings. Make sure your team or audience is learning something. Utilize the chat features and invite people to participate and ask questions. Avoid being too structured. When you are communicating digitally, being too prepared and formal can make it feel sterile and forced. Have fun with it. Keep it casual, and you will keep people engaged. Another way you can be effective by keeping it casual is by handing your vacation planning over to Magical Vacation Planners. Be honest about what you are looking for and watch them run with all the heavy lifting. You can reach them at 407-442-2694. And if Creating Disney Magic has been impactful to you, you may want to jump into the Cockerell Academy. We are categorizing all of our episodes for easy navigation, and all of our Cockerell Academy members will have access.

John Riggleman retired in 2020 after a career of over 40 years in the themed entertainment industry. He started as a ride operator at Cedar Point and Busch Gardens Williamsburg back in the 1970s. Over the years, he has opened multiple new parks and dozens of new attractions and acted as an expert in theme park operations. Most recently, he was Senior Director of Global Operations, Standards, and Harmonization at Universal Parks & Resorts. Even after retiring, John is still very involved with the industry, helping to lead safety committees, educational initiatives, and acting as a mentor for many young professionals in the attractions industry. John started out as a chemistry major in the pre-medical track at West Virginia University. During the summers of his college years, he worked two summers at Cedar Point and two summers at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Though he started out as a ride operator, he was given more responsibility each year, soon gaining leadership positions despite his young age. John realized from those frontline operations experiences that he wanted to have a career in themed entertainment because he loved working outdoors and truly enjoyed interacting with people. Getting hired full-time after graduation was actually a challenge for John in the 1970s, so he stayed in school and earned a second degree in medical technology as he continued to submit different applications to different parks. Eventually, he found his landing spot in 1980 at Cedar Point as an area manager. After finding his way into the industry full-time, John would stay for 40 more years, work at about 10 different parks, live in 9 states, open 4 new parks, and open over 40 new attractions. While they do have a variety of similarities, John noticed some key differences between seasonal and year-round theme parks during his time working at each type. One challenge for seasonal parks is that they often have smaller teams that must wear more hats. Year-round parks tended to have larger, more specialized teams. This led to a difference in how quickly employees, especially young workers, were able to climb the ranks and gather more responsibilities. Like John experienced himself, young employees at seasonal parks that returned each year and excelled were given new role with more duties and oversight of other employees. At a year-round park, this sort of quick progression is less common. At either type of park, whether the employee ultimately wants to be in a guest-facing role later in their career, John sees the value of all theme park employees spending some time on the frontlines. For example, back-of-the-house operations employees can often design better service, training, and operations manuals if they have empathy for what ride operators experience each day. Day-to-day operations have their unique challenges, but opening new rides, lands, or parks is incredibly challenging and rewarding. When a new park is part of an existing chain of theme parks, such as Six Flags or Universal, the new park has the luxury to learn from the existing parks and take many of their operations procedures to the new park. While this makes it easier for the new park, it also is beneficial to the company because consistency across parks in your portfolio is very beneficial. When creating a park that is completely new, they can start their operations manuals from scratch. This was the case that John experienced when he was on the opening team for the short-lived Hard Rock Park. They first benchmarked existing parks and looked at what worked well as well as identified opportunities for improvement. Hard Rock Park had the opportunity to run completely differently than parks with decades of history. John enjoyed the ability to incorporate new efficiencies in the park’s operations plans, but unfortunately, the park didn’t even last for an entire season. When asked about Hard Rock Park and some insight into possible reasons why it didn’t survive, John indicated that there were multiple factors at play. He said it was a beautiful park with a great variety of attractions, delicious food, and IAAPA award-nominated entertainment. All of the guest-facing elements looked great, and John was confident that the right people were designing and building the park. Some of the different theories are that the hard-hit 2008 economy was partially to blame. Another theory is that the park was expected to be cash flow positive from day one, which is a feat very few parks can achieve. Most parks take several years before they climb out of the red, and their parent companies have to shoulder some losses to ultimately make the park a success. Another possibility is that the location, about 10 minutes from the beaches of Myrtle Beach, didn’t help; some thought it was hard to argue with the free entertainment of a beach. In the end, it is hard to pinpoint a single reason that Hard Rock Park didn’t make it through its inaugural season. John also discussed his involvement with education, training, and informal mentoring of young professionals in the attractions industry. John has taught several classes at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, including risk management and product development courses. John also serves on multiple boards and committees that focus on training and increasing safety standards within the themed entertainment industry. While theme parks are often direct competitors with each other, when it comes to safety, John says that these competitors become “fierce friends.” John enjoys recruiting students from universities near the theme parks. He emphasized that he loves learning from all of his employees and enjoys hiring talent that will challenge him and help make the park even better. When asked if he had any advice he’d like to share with students or other young professionals potentially interested in a career in theme parks, John emphasized the importance of finding your passion, whatever that might be. He also discussed the value of networking. Some examples of places to network would be to attend ASTM, AIMS, and IAAPA expos and conferences. He also suggested getting involved with theme park competitions. John has been a long-time supporter of the Ryerson Invitational Thrill Design Competition, started by Dr. Kathryn Woodcock, a professor at Ryerson University. Additionally, John said that while a degree is useful at opening some doors, your attitude is what is most important at ultimately proving yourself as a young professional in the themed entertainment industry. Guest: David Thorpe, Godfather of Player DevelopmentIn this week’s basketball coaching conversation, the "Godfather" of player development, David Thorpe joins the Basketball Podcast to discuss the evolution of player development, leadership, and the impact he has made on the game.David Thorpe’s career began as a successful high school basketball coach in Florida in 1987. In 1993 he left “team coaching” by opening the first specialized player development program in the country, producing high-level major college prospects by 1994. It spawned a global business where now in every city in the basketball-playing world there are families working with private coaches, much like tennis and golf athletes have always done, in multi-million dollar facilities, gyms, and driveways. Six years later Thorpe moved from helping high school and college players to NBA players and professionals playing overseas. Coach Thorpe has helped his players earn salaries amounting to over a billion dollars in the past 19 years, and the list of players he has worked with closely have been NBA All-Stars, World Champions, European League Champions, Asian Champions (China), and Olympians representing 6 different countries.
