Long before The Undertaker battled Stone Cold, The Punisher faced off with Steve Williams! Join wrestling superfans Alex Doriot and Travis White on their encyclopedic exploration digging up The Dead Man as they welcome back Mike and JV from The Bottom Line Wrestling Cast for a Watchalong of USWA TV from 11/4/89 featuring the first ever match between the men who would go on to become The Undertaker and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Who could have ever guessed these two random grapplers from a territory in Texas would one day go on to be on the Mount Rushmore of the WWE? It's a pretty brief encounter, so we decided to watch the entire episode of 80s wrestling ridiculousness including sex symbol Jeff Jarrett, the ludicrous Latin Lover, pop-ins from Percy Pringle and P.Y. Chu Hi, an infamous spanking angle that wouldn't fly in 2025, and a barnburner of a main event between Jerry Lawler and Terry Gordy! Plus we discuss The Undertaker's recent appearance on NXT with the TNA Champion Trick Williams and we share our memories of The Immortal Hulk Hogan in honor of his recent passing. Welcome back to Wrestling Tonight, your weekly look at everything happening across WWE, AEW, NJPW, TNA, and beyond. This week's episode covers one of the most loaded slates of the year as the summer calendar reaches a boiling point. We begin with a full preview of AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, where the world's biggest promotions collide once again on one of wrestling's most anticipated stages. Headlining the card, AEW World Champion Hangman Page defends against MJF in a long-awaited rematch, while AEW Unified Champion Kazuchika Okada puts his title on the line against Swerve Strickland. The show also features the reunion of Adam Copeland and Christian Cage as they team for the first time in over 14 years, Toni Storm defending the AEW Women's World Championship against Athena, and Zack Sabre Jr. meeting Nigel McGuinness for the IWGP World Championship. Kyle Fletcher defends the TNT title against Hiromu Takahashi, Mercedes Moné faces Persephone, Alex Windsor, and a Stardom representative in a TBS Championship Four-Way, and a stacked lights-out steel cage match pits Will Ospreay, Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi, Darby Allin, and Hiroshi Tanahashi in his London farewell against Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Gabe Kidd, and The Young Bucks. From there, we turn to WWE's future with NXT Heatwave. Oba Femi is set to defend the NXT Championship against either Trick Williams or Je'Von Evans, while Hank Walker and Tank Ledger put the NXT Tag Team titles on the line against DarkState. Jacy Jayne defends the TNA Knockouts World Championship in a triple threat against Masha Slamovich and Ash by Elegance, and Jordynne Grace collides with Blake Monroe. A number one contender's match for the NXT Women's Championship will also take place featuring Jaida Parker, Kelani Jordan, and Lola Vice. Over in TNA, Emergence 2025 delivered a card full of major results. Trick Williams retained the World Championship against Moose in a match that had the Baltimore crowd split but firmly cemented Williams as TNA's top babyface. The Hardys retained the World Tag Team titles against The Rascalz in one of the night's highlights, Leon Slater held onto the X-Division Championship against Cedric Alexander, and Mike Santana defeated Sami Callihan in a Baltimore Street Fight that may have marked Callihan's farewell. While technical issues marred the preshow, the main event and key title bouts gave TNA momentum heading into Bound for Glory. In Mexico, Triplemanía marked the official beginning of WWE and AAA's working relationship. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and Nick Khan stood alongside AAA leadership to emphasize collaboration. On the card, Omos won the Copa Bardahl, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. claimed the Latin American title, and Psycho Clown and Pagano captured the AAA Tag Team Championship. Judgment Day scored a win in trios action, Flammer retained the Reina de Reinas Championship, and in the main event, El Hijo del Vikingo retained the AAA Mega Championship in a four-way over Dominik Mysterio, Dragon Lee, and El Grande Americano, with AJ Styles making a shocking run-in to help seal the finish. The event had the production, presentation, and pacing of a WWE show, sparking debate about AAA's evolving identity under this partnership. On the business side, TKO announced that UFC will end its traditional pay-per-view model beginning in January 2026 under a $7.7 billion, seven-year deal with Paramount Plus and CBS. WWE also secured a five-year, $1.6 billion agreement with ESPN, moving Premium Live Events like WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Royal Rumble to ESPN's new streaming service. At the same time, reports revealed WWE holds an option to purchase TNA and a right of first refusal should the company seek another buyer, further linking the two promotions' futures. Finally, NJPW's G1 Climax 35 has reached its conclusion. Konosuke Takeshita defeated EVIL in the final at Ariake Arena, fighting through an injured knee and overcoming House of Torture interference to secure his first G1 victory. Along the way, Takeshita shocked Zack Sabre Jr. in the semifinals, setting the stage for their Wrestle Kingdom clash, where he will challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. With this win, Takeshita declared himself “The Alpha,” signaling his rise as NJPW's new international ace. In Episode 26, Keith and Shawnn bring two fresh takes that question long-standing assumptions in the world of pro wrestling. One revisits a bold exit from the 1980s, the other reimagines what it means to win the Royal Rumble. Both takes are sure to spark conversation. Shit-Take #1 (Shawn): "Tom Zenk did the right thing by walking out on Vince McMahon in 1987." Shawn argues that Tom Zenk's decision to leave the WWF during a promising run as part of The Can-Am Connection wasn't a misstep — it was a principled stand. This take explores the importance of self-worth, business disagreements behind the scenes, and why Zenk's choice might have been more forward-thinking than most give him credit for. Shit-Take #2 (Keith): "The Royal Rumble winner should be able to challenge for any title, not just the world title." Keith proposes expanding the stakes of the Royal Rumble. Instead of locking the winner into a world title match at WrestleMania, this take suggests giving them the freedom to challenge for any championship — whether it's the Intercontinental, U.S., or even tag team gold. The idea reframes the Rumble as a more open-ended path to WrestleMania.

We took a week off from the main show, and you know what that means: We're keeping you busy with some older Between the Sheets Patreon content that we've now made available for free. This time, we decided to assemble the entire “FUCK SABU!” trilogy (originally Patreon episodes #43-#45), covering Sabu's wild 1995, into one file for everyone to check out as a taste of what our Patreon-only deep dives are like. This is a great example, too, as we notice some very interesting things that the newsletters didn't pick up on at the time, like Chris Benoit's surprisingly obvious involvement in orchestrating the whole scenario.Want more content like this? Then sign up for the $5.00/month ($50.40/year if paid annually upfront) tier on our Patreon page and check out the back catalog that spans almost 9 years. This month, for August, the deep dive that we've started on is more 1995 content, covering Bill Watts' brief stint booking the WWF. Also, don't forget: From this point forward, regardless of if we're doing a month-long deep-dive or a smattering of smaller topics, we now release weekly Patreon content, with the segments of the month-long deep dives getting dropped each week as we record them.Anyway, we hope you enjoy these shows, and now, here are the original show descriptions:Part 1:Since April is the 25th anniversary of Sabu being fired from ECW, we decided it was the perfect opportunity to take a deep dive looking at everything that happened surrounding that very memorable event. So that brings us to this month's special, part one of what should be at least two episodes looking at Sabu's 1995, from his signing with NJPW to his indie schedule to his troubles with ECW, climaxing with Sabu double booking himself the night of ECW's big Three-Way Dance card. How did Sabu end up booked in NJPW the same night as the ECW show on late notice, why didn't he just cancel one of the bookings, and how did the situation devolve from there? We look at all of this in-depth, as it was covered in the newsletters, where both Sabu and Paul Heyman were commenting in detail on the record. All that and much more, including Chris Benoit's apparent major role in the Sabu/ECW schism, the greatness of Murder Inc./Wolf Army in 1995 NJPW, Sabu getting maced while doing a run-in for Circle City Wrestling, Chris Zavisa as Sabu's house organ, the proliferation of "Best of Sabu" videotapes, the reemergence of Dennis Coralluzzo in Sabu's career, and much more. This is a GREAT show, with a *lot* of fascinating stuff that's never talked about. Here's looking forward to part two!Part 2:We're back to pick up where we left off in our journey through Sabu's 1995, starting a few weeks after his firing from ECW over the "FUCK SABU!" no-show, as he starts talking to WCW and wins the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship from Koji Kanemoto at the Fukuoka Dome. Things quickly take a turn, though, as Sabu *throws down the title while cutting a promo about how he's a heavyweight*, NJPW tries to pretend it never happened, Sabu drops the belt at the next major show, Sabu becomes one of the anchors of Kevin Sullivan's plan to build "two WCWs" for the Monday Nitro launch, and much more happens as we close out the show just before Nitro launches. But the real meat of this show is in the forgotten Observer report, in black and white and plain English, that Sabu and Paul Heyman came to a secret agreement on an ECW return months before the actual return happened, and how Taz must have been privy to it given his career prospects at the time. All that and much more on another fascinating chapter in the "FUCK SABU!" saga!Part 3:We're back to pick up where we left off in our journey through Sabu's 1995, finishing up the series as we cover the launch of WCW Monday Nitro through the release of the 1995 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards in January 1996. Topics include how quickly Sabu's WCW run fell apart, the strange six month gap where Sabu stops teaming with the rest of Masahiro Chono's Okami Gundan/Murder Inc. stable in NJPW, Sabu scrambling for ideas to make him a pushed heavyweight in WCW like bringing in The Sheik's old United States Championship belt, The Sheik becoming Sabu's agent, Sabu returning to Dennis Coralluzzo's NWA New Jersey, Sabu becoming a transitional UWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Champion, Konnan trying to court Sabu for AAA, Sabu returning to ECW the same day he worked for Dennis, a labyrinthian web of conflicting stories from Sabu and Heyman about how they worked out the return, Sabu “officially” being fired from WCW on their hotline, the WWF's efforts to get Sabu for the 1996 Royal Rumble, and MUCH more. This is a fantastic end to the series and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it.Timestamps:0:09:00 December 1994-January 19950:40:11 February-March 19951:09:52 Week of April 3 & Week of April 10, 19952:04:29 Week of April 17, 19952:27:03 April-May 19953:14:04 June 19953:33:51 July 19954:02:51 August 19954:36:30 September 19955:19:37 October 19955:55:23 November 19956:43:38 December 1995 and beyondTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.
WWE and ESPN announced a landmark five-year agreement to air WWE premium live events domestically in the United States on its new streaming service starting in 2026. Host Adam Silverstein covers this breaking news with an instant reaction to the deal and exclusive details you will not hear anywhere else, including the terms of the WWE-ESPN agreement, what will not be airing on ESPN, how to access the streaming service and associated costs. "The Silver King" also discusses the future of the WWE archive, what's next for NXT and AAA premium live events, and the potential bundling of TNA Wrestling content before evaluating the financial terms of the agreement and the impact moving PLEs to ESPN will have on WWE's business both in the short and long term. In this episode of I'm an Artist, Not a Salesman, Luis sits down with someone who knows what it feels like to rise fast, fall hard, and come back stronger. Former WWE wrestler, Tough Enough season 1 winner, and current YouTube powerhouse Maven Huffman joins the pod for a raw, funny, and deeply honest conversation about fame, loss, hustle, and personal reinvention. You might remember Maven for one of the most iconic moments in WWE history—eliminating The Undertaker from the 2002 Royal Rumble. That dropkick became a viral moment before viral was even a thing. But after a few years in the spotlight, Maven's WWE run came to an end. And that's where the real story begins.Maven opens up about what life looked like when the cameras stopped rolling. From growing up in a trailer in rural Virginia to losing his mother at a young age to finding a second chance in wrestling—and now, content creation—this conversation dives deep into the ups and downs of chasing your dream and what happens when you lose it all.Luis and Maven talk about the emotional toll of being let go from WWE, the identity crisis that followed, and why it took hitting rock bottom to realize he was more than just a guy in spandex on TV. Maven talks about the importance of being grounded, staying humble, and not letting titles—literal or metaphorical—define your worth. And now? He's thriving. With over 700,000 subscribers and a loyal fanbase, Maven has found a second wind on YouTube by doing something simple but powerful—telling the truth. Whether he's sharing behind-the-scenes stories from his wrestling days, reacting to AI wrestling videos, or diving into the messy politics of the business, Maven has become one of the most respected voices in wrestling content today. In this episode, you'll hear:What it was like meeting Hulk Hogan for the first timeHow being the first Tough Enough winner made him a locker room targetWhy he now considers getting fired from WWE a blessing in disguiseThe personal losses that shaped his resilienceWhat it means to truly start over in your 40sThe real reason he drove 10 hours to film with Buff BagwellHow his partner Zach helped launch one of wrestling's most honest YouTube channelsWhy being vulnerable as a man isn't weakness—it's strengthThis episode isn't just about wrestling—it's about purpose, perspective, and the beauty of second chances.
