On this episode, we welcome back to the program, journalist and author, Joshua Hammer who was our guest back on episode 112 in September 2016. Joshua's career has included serving as Newsweek Bureau Chief in, Nairobi, Buenos Aires, LA, Berlin, Jerusalem and Cape Town. His work has appeared in the New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, National Geographic and the Smithsonian just to name a few publications. He is a New York Times bestselling author of six books, including The Falcon Thief and The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu (which we talked about in our last conversation). Joshua's just released and latest book is: The Mesopotamian Riddle: An Archaeologist, a Soldier, a Clergyman, and the Race to Decipher the World's Oldest Writing, published by Simon & Schuster. In the course of the conversation we dive deep into this fascinating book – everything from the Royal Asiatic Society's 1857 Great Cuneiform Challenge and the gentlemen who took part in it, to the difficulty of the digs in the Near East, to the “Assyrian Fever” (as Joshua calls it) that swept London in 1851- 1852, to the origins of the British Museum, to the topic of cultural appropriation of a country or people's national patrimony, and more. In keeping with the theme of the show, should he take a one way ticket back in time, Joshua shared what he would tell scholars and archeologists in the mid 19th century about how their work resonates today. As for Joshua's own one way ticket destination, it's still to Manhattan in 1967. Do check out Joshua's other books: Chosen by God: A Brother's Journey; A Season in Bethlehem: Unholy War in a Sacred Place; and Yokohama Burning: The Deadly 1923 Earthquake and Fire that Helped Forge the Path to World War II.

What is a Holy or Sacred Place in Our Ways? What is a Shrine or Temple? How is one made?
Today I'm sharing a bit about my book, Sacred Places of Goddess, as we're about to go into Spring and our thoughts might be turning to travel. You'll hear one of my travel stories from Egypt and more about Goddess Advocates, naming American destinations as "sacred goddess sites" and why we should consider museums sacred sites of Goddess. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - Modern geneticists have shown us that the past is much closer than most of us realize. We carry the genetic coding from previous generations in our DNA and it can be traced back 200,000 to 300,000 years. Adam Rutherford went further, proclaiming everyone with European roots descends from Charlemagne (as well as his most humble followers). His point being that the number of your direct ancestors doubles every generation you count backward. By the time you count back 33 generations—about 800 to 1,000 years ago—you have more than 8 billion ancestors. By way of contrast, the population of England is believed to have only been about 2 million in 1,000 AD. At that point you had 4,000 ‘ancestors' for every living person. This means your genealogy is populated by the same people counted over and over again through different lines of descent. If you are of English ancestry, something of even greater antiquity like the Stonehenge artefacts currently being exhibited at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria is definitely about your heritage.

Hello to you listening in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more for a story) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. How do we get good at turning toward the uncertain future? How do we sustain ourselves, and each other? How can we help each other, even--or especially--those with whom we don't agree, through the revolutions ahead? I have an idea. We can share our stories. Here's one.The great Polish rabbi, Israel ben Eliezer, also known as the Ba'al Shem Tov, deeply loved his people. Whenever they were troubled or persecuted he went to a sacred place in the forest, lit a sacred fire, and said a special prayer asking God to protect his people. It was enough and the people were saved. But in time the Ba'al Shem Tov died. Later, his disciple, following in his master's footsteps, went into the same part of the forest and said, “Creator of the Universe, I do not know how to light the sacred fire, but I do know the special prayer; please, hear me! and help your people.” And it was enough.Generations passed and when the next Rabbi saw how his people were being persecuted, he went into the forest and said, “Oh, Lord, I don't know how to light the sacred fire, nor do I know the special prayer, but I still remember the place. Help us! Protect the people” And the people were protected.Decades later, a very elderly rabbi seeing his people being persecuted, spoke to God saying, “I don't know how to light the sacred fire, nor do I know the special prayer, and I can't even find the place in the forest. All I can do is tell you this story and hope that you will hear me. Please help the people!” And again the people were spared.Story Prompt: When we find ourselves lost in the forest, do not know how to light the sacred fire, or say the special prayer, we can share our stories. What else might we do to help each other? Write that story! You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer https://www.quartermoonstoryarts.net/services/,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your communication challenges, get in touch with me today✓ Stay current with Diane as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack and on LinkedInStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. Explore liminal spaces: thresholds, twilight, and the magic in-between. --- Join and support the community: https://www.creationspaths.com/ Charlie and Brian dive into the concept of "liminal spaces," exploring transitional, in-between places such as doorways, twilight, and dream states. They discuss how these spaces are powerful conduits for magic, introspection, and transformation. Charlie explains how liminal spaces—like thresholds and dawn or dusk—are neither one thing nor another, creating potent environments for mystical work, reflection, and personal growth. Brian expands on the hypnagogic state and the role of breathwork in accessing liminal spaces, sharing anecdotes on how individuals often react with discomfort in such spaces due to the ambiguity they represent. The episode encourages listeners to explore their own comfort with liminal spaces and to use these moments to deepen their magical practices and self-awareness. Solomon sets out to build a house for God, as people across time and place have done over and over again. But even in the dedication prayer, Solomon acknowledges that God cannot be contained by a building, regardless of size or grandness or even how delicious it smells. Just as Pastor Megan's delicious-smelling cedar chest could never contain her bounty of beautiful quilts, so too Solomon's cedar temple could never contain the enormity of God. Houses for God have never been about or for God, so much as they are for a people, seeking to create sacred spaces for living in relationship with one another and God; a people seeking to recharge their spiritual batteries.Sermon begins at minute marker 5:421 Kings 5.1-5, and 8.27-30, 41-43ResourcesBibleWorm podcast: Episode 609 – Dedicating the Temple, Amy Robertson and Robert Williamson, JrRainer Maria Rilke, “Ich bin, du Ängtlicher. Cairo's synagogues shed new light on the transformation Egyptian society and its Jewish community underwent from 1875 to the present. Sacred Places Tell Tales: Jewish Life and Heritage in Modern Cairo (U Pennsylvania Press, 2024) is the previously untold history of Egyptian Jewry and the ways in which Cairo's synagogues historically functioned as active institutions in the social lives of these Jews. Historian Yoram Meital interprets Cairo's synagogues as exquisite storytellers. The synagogues still stand in Cairo, and they shed new light on the social, cultural, and political processes that Egyptian society and the Jews underwent from 1875 to the present. Studying old and new synagogues in the Egyptian capital, their locations, the items they stored, and the range of religious and nonreligious activities they hosted reveals the social heterogeneity and the diverse ways in which modern Jewish sociocultural identity was constructed within Cairo's Sephardi, Ashkenazi, and Karaite communities. Meital contends that studying the congregations and the social services provided in synagogues reveals the local Jewish community's customs, cultural preferences, socioeconomic gaps, and class divisions. Sacred Places Tell Tales narrates not only the past but also the unprecedented transformations that have occurred in recent years in Egypt. While only a handful of Jews live in Egypt, the preservation of Jewish heritage, first and foremost synagogues and cemeteries, enjoy a growing interest in public discourse and popular culture. This new desire to preserve Jewish heritage is inseparable from the ongoing public debate about Egyptian society, its characteristics, and its identity, past and present. By contextualizing Jewish heritage preservation in a longer Egyptian and Jewish history, Meital opens a window into one of the most significant political discussions dividing Egyptian society today. Bright on Buddhism - Asian Religions Series - Shintō Part 2 Hello and welcome to the Asian religions series. In this series, we will be discussing religious traditions in Asia other than Buddhism. Buddhism never existed in a vacuum, and as it has spread all across East Asia, it has developed, localized, and syncretized with local traditions in fascinating and significant ways. As such, we cannot provide a complete picture of East Asian without discussing those local traditions such as they were and are. Disclaimer: this series is very basic and introductory, and does not and cannot paint a complete picture of these religious traditions as they are in the present or throughout history. Today, we will be discussing Shintō, a very historically and culturally significant religious tradition in Japan. We hope you enjoy Resources: Azegami, Naoki (2012). Translated by Mark Teeuwen. Explore the story of Goddess Sati's love for Lord Shiva, her sacrifices and the sacred places.
Sacred places have graced our urban landscapes for generations as reminders of our shared human journey. However, many of these historic churches, synagogues, and mosques now face an existential crisis: their very existence is being threatened by dwindling membership rolls and crumbling infrastructures.Bob Jaeger from Partners for Sacred Places shares that the potential loss of these hallowed spaces would leave a void in communities already grappling with challenges. It is a call to action that transcends religious affiliations, imploring us to join forces and safeguard these treasured institutions.

Where is your sacred space? When Jesus died on the cross, the veil in the temple, which kept everyone away from the very holy presence of God, that curtain was torn in two., from the top down. We usually focus on the message in that moment, as an invitation to come. You're invited. Come into God's presence. But what if God tore the curtain in two as a way of saying, "I will not be put in a box. Walls cannot contain me." Listen, this changes everything.. Do you understand? Since the resurrection, any place can be a sacred space, because Christ is let loose and His presence brings the sacred to every space He touches. Every revival begins with an arrival; a fresh revelation of the glory and majesty; the love and power of Jesus. The good news is that God cannot be put in a box. Walls cannot contain Him. Because of that, I am filled with hope and expectancy that every time I step out my door, I'm entering into potentially sacred space.
