Steve Holmberg is one of our favorite recurring guests, and this time, he showed up with something nobody expected. Over the holidays, Steve went from zero coding experience to a fully functional AI-powered app called Field Check, built using the vibe coding platform Lovable. The app connects retail store associates directly to brand product and marketing teams through AI-driven chats that go deeper than any survey can — and he built the whole thing in about a month. In this conversation, Steve walks through exactly how he did it, what he wishes he'd known before starting, and why AI is "a tool masquerading as a solution." He also deployed Field Check live on the Second Nature Slack channel to surface what the audience actually wants — and the results are fascinating. Plus: a halftime check-in on Second Nature's 2026 predictions, what happened at Sea Otter with Chinese bike brands, why Adidas is having a moment, and the 32-inch wheel debate that nobody asked for. 5 Can't-Lose Home Improvement Projects for Your Forever Home

RepcoLite Home Improvement Show

Episode SummaryThis week on Home In Progress, Dan opens with something a little different -- a look at the animal kingdom's most surprising builders and tool users, and what any of us can take from that. Then he gets into the main topic: the growing number of homeowners who've decided they're staying put, and what that shift in thinking should mean for how you spend renovation dollars. Dan walks through five can't-lose projects for the forever home, including some smaller-scale, paint-friendly versions of each one for when the budget isn't there yet. He closes with four questions that can help you figure out which project is actually the right first move for your specific house. In This Episode[00:00] -- Welcome and Teaser[00:34] -- Animals Using Tools (and What That Has to Do With You)[05:35] -- The Forever Home Mindset[09:59] -- Project 1: Outdoor Living Space[13:21] -- Project 2: Kitchen Refresh[19:25] -- Project 3: Windows, Insulation, and Air Sealing[24:36] -- Project 4: Basement Upgrade[30:50] -- Project 5: Primary Bathroom[33:46] -- Four Questions to Find Your Best First Project[38:53] -- Paint, Final Thoughts, and Wrap-UpSegment 1: Animals Using Tools [00:34]Dan opens with a fun detour into the animal kingdom. Turns out humans aren't the only ones who build things, use tools, and pass down traditions.Termites [01:09] -- Termite mounds can rise more than 20 feet in the air with walls 18 inches thick. Inside, they're honeycombed with tunnels, chambers, and air channels that regulate temperature and humidity like a built-in HVAC system. Architects have actually copied the design. The Eastgate Centre in Zimbabwe, designed by Mike Pearce, uses passive cooling modeled directly on termite mounds and consumes about 90% less energy for ventilation than a comparable conventional building.Sea Otters and Chimps [02:07] -- Otters float on their backs, rest a stone on their belly, and smash open clams and mussels against it. Some otters even have a favorite rock they carry tucked in a pouch of loose skin under their arm so it's always handy. Chimpanzees strip leaves off twigs and use them to fish termites out of mounds. The more interesting part: different chimp communities in the same forest have entirely different tool traditions, passed down like family recipes. In Tanzania, two neighboring groups both fish for termites with sticks, but one group consistently makes their tools wider and longer than the other. In Senegal, one community has invented something no other chimps on earth do -- they make actual spears, sharpening the tips with their teeth and using them to hunt.Crows and Elephants [03:55] -- In a famous Oxford experiment, a crow named Betty was given two pieces of wire, one bent into a hook and one straight. Her cage mate stole the hook. Betty took the straight wire, jammed it into a crack, bent it into a hook on her own, and used it to fish meat out of a tube. She did it nine out of ten times when the scenario was repeated. Asian elephants snap branches off trees, strip them down, and shorten them to just the right length for swatting flies. They're not using whatever's lying around -- they're modifying the tool to fit the job.The Takeaway [04:51] -- If termites with brains the size of a grain of salt can engineer a skyscraper, and crows can fabricate hooks on the fly, and otters are basically one step away from a tool belt, whatever you're telling yourself you can't learn probably isn't as true as you think.Segment 2: The Forever Home Mindset and 5 Can't-Lose Projects [05:35]Why People Are Staying Put [06:10]Dan poses a question to start: if you knew without a doubt you were never moving from the house you're in right now, what would you change first? That question is reshaping how a lot of homeowners think about renovation right now. Homeowner spending on home improvements is projected to hit $518 billion in 2026, and it's not being driven by the luxury market or house flippers. It's regular homeowners who've decided they're staying. According to the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies and a 2026 survey from Great Day Improvements, nearly two-thirds of homeowners expect to be in their current home for 11 years or more. And 44% of homeowners now describe where they live as their forever home.If you bought or refinanced around 2020 or 2021 at 3% or lower, you already know why nobody's moving. A 7% mortgage waiting on the other side of a sale has a way of making your current house look a lot better. When that's the context, the renovation calculus changes. You stop asking what a future buyer will want and start asking what will actually make your family's life better for the next decade or more. That shift changes everything about where renovation dollars go.Project 1: Outdoor Living Space [09:59]West Michigan winters get all the complaints, but the springs, summers, and falls are genuinely great. If you're staying in your home, it pays to think about how much of that you're actually using.Dan's honest about his own situation here: his deck has no seating, nobody ever uses it, and they're wasting dozens of evenings out there every year just by not having the space set up. The vision for this project can be as big as a covered pergola, an outdoor kitchen, a hot tub area with weather-safe TV and speakers -- spaces that function as actual rooms. The return on that isn't measured in resale dollars. It's measured in summer evenings with your family.Paint-friendly version: If the bigger build-out isn't in the budget, start smaller. Get the deck cleaned up and restained. Get dedicated seating out there. If you've already got wood or metal chairs that have seen better days, RepcoLite can usually help you get them cleaned up and looking good again. Create a space that actually invites you to sit down.Project 2: Kitchen Refresh [13:21]The kitchen is where most families spend an enormous amount of time, almost all of it either cooking, cleaning, or entertaining. A kitchen that looks good and functions well makes daily life easier in ways that are hard to overstate.Dan talks through what a refresh can include: painting or refacing cabinets, new countertops, updated hardware, a new sink and faucet, new appliances, updated lighting, new floors. Some of those things aren't cheap. But the payoff comes from 300-plus dinners a year in a space that doesn't make you feel bad every time you walk into it.Dan's own kitchen confession [15:33]: '80s oak cabinets he doesn't like, dated hardware, a track light that's a direct import from the same decade with shiny brass everything and two or three working bulbs, Formica counters that have lost most of their original color. He's not proud of it. He knows it drags him down. He also knows it doesn't have to, and that a couple of weeks of work would change most of it.Paint-friendly version: Painting the cabinets and updating the colors is one of the highest-impact, most budget-friendly changes you can make in a kitchen. Pair that with better lighting and some new hardware, and you can dramatically lift the mood of a space without touching the counters or the layout.Project 3: Windows, Insulation, and Air Sealing [19:25]Older homes lose a significant amount of heat through inefficient windows, attics, rim joists, and basement walls. Every year you stay in the house, you're paying for that inefficiency. Replacing outdated windows with modern low-E glass triple-pane units, combined with serious air sealing and insulation in the attic, is one of those projects that starts paying you back the day it's done. The payback isn't just in lower heating bills, though that's real and measurable. It's also in comfort. Eliminating drafts, keeping warm spaces warmer and cool spaces cooler -- that changes how you feel about being inside your own home.Dan is careful not to oversell the financial return. Windows alone don't always pay for themselves quickly in energy savings. Insulation and air sealing tend to give you better bang for your buck on the utility side. But when you're in your forever home and you're not doing the math on resale, the calculation shifts. It becomes less about payback period and more about making the house a more comfortable place to live every single day.Dan also mentions a past show segment on opening painted-shut windows from 2024, and will link to it in the show notes for anyone dealing with that specific problem.Paint-friendly version: You can't make old windows more efficient with paint. But you can improve how they look and feel. Getting painted-shut windows functioning again doesn't cost much and doesn't require much more than some know-how. Dan's got that covered in the 2024 segment linked below.Project 4: Basement Upgrade [24:36]Almost every West Michigan home has a basement. A surprising percentage of them are being used for storage and not much else. A finished basement adds livable square footage without changing the footprint of the house, and it grows with you -- a playroom becomes a teenage hangout space becomes a home gym as the years go by.Dan's current lower level is wall-to-wall paneling, drop ceiling tiles, and carpet, all from the '80s. It works. The kids have used it. It's served its purpose. But there's a lot more potential there.Paint-friendly version: This is one where paint can genuinely transform a space on a fraction of the budget of a full finish-out. Dan tells the story of doing exactly this in his first house -- a dark, dingy Michigan basement that nobody...

Something new came to Sea Otter this year, and I went to get the scoop. Sea Otter is widely regarded as the largest bike expo in the world, but calling it a "bike expo" doesn't quite cover it. With over 70,000 attendees, 1,000+ brands and exhibitors, and 10,000+ athletes competing across a huge variety of races, it's… a lot. And with all of that, it's hard to imagine anything was missing. Enter Old Man Mountain. Five years ago, Erik Fenner, OMM's Marketing Manager, attended Sea Otter for the first time. That night, he organically invited a few folks to join his campsite hangout. Nearly 30 people showed up. An idea was born. This year, that idea became reality with the inaugural OMM Bikepacking Campout and After Party at Sea Otter. OMM and their partners staked out a beautiful campsite about a mile from the main expo, tucked into a serene setting that felt worlds away from the chaos. People came from far and wide. Some rode their bikes. Some drove. Some flew. Some may have crawled. However they got there, everyone seemed to find what bikepackers tend to gravitate toward: a little dirt, a little community, and some grassroots vibes. It turns out, in the sea of Sea Otter, something was missing. Bikepacking is still a small but mighty corner of cycling, but it's clearly on the rise. You could see it in the growing number of adventure cycling booths, the people stopping by to ask questions, and the strong turnout for the first-ever OMM Bikepacking Campout. In today's episode, I take you into Sea Otter as a first-time attendee. But I wasn't there to see how many grams I could save if I sold a kidney. I was there to see what my friends at OMM were cooking up. Spoiler alert: it was really damn good. This episode is made up of five conversations with sponsors, vendors, and attendees of the OMM Bikepacking Campout. You'll hear from: Chris Kratsch — Co-Owner of Old Man Mountain Carley Boyce — Campout attendee who attempted the Great Divide with her dog Rowdy, then went back the next year to attempt the Tour Divide Noelle Battle — Executive Director of Bikepacking Roots Wade Green — Managing Partner for Tout Terrain in the U.S. Erik Fenner — Marketing Manager at Old Man Mountain I had an incredible time at this inaugural event. Our first episode that covered the topic of 32 inch wheels focused on the bigger wheels being used on mountain bikes. Daniel Yang of Neuhaus Metalworks put us on a prototype rigid mountain bike and took us for a ride. It was eye opening. But it also raised questions.  At Sea Otter we saw a shift by some builders and manufacturers as to where they thought the big wheels might perform best. Drop Bar bikes supported by 32 inch wheels were just as common as Flat Bars at this year's show. Straight line speed and all day comfort was the reason given for developing a 32er gravel bike over a mountain bike. Like a lot of bike media, we set out to get some answers on the future of this "Big Idea." Daniel Yang is back with his report card on the trend. We also hear from two companies that were showing Gravel bikes that attempt to answer the question: Is bigger, better?

We break down the polarizing "big wheel" trend, compare ultra-premium Partington wheels to Hunt's high-value alternatives, and dive into the coolest gear from the Sea Otter Classic. This week, the podcast is all about Sea Otter and we've got a full house. Lisa Charlebois, Logan Jones-Wilkins, and I all spent time in California at the event, and we've got stories to tell. We kick things off by sharing what the vibe was like on the ground, especially for Jones-Wilkins, who was attending the show for the very first time. After that, we get into the big news: big wheels. Some of us are skeptical and some favor the potential efficiency, but either way, 32-inch wheels are the topic we had to cover. There is a lot to take in, but we focus on the Salsa Fargo, a 32-inch lugged carbon bike from Faction, and a Ventum mountain bike coming this summer. From there, we talk gravel bikes. This is Sea Otter, so gravel is the focus, and Logan dives deep on a few cool bikes, including the Look G85 and an aero-focused SEKA featuring integrated Fidlock bottles. Despite the dirt-heavy show, I try to keep it road-first whenever possible, and there were some notable road launches. Partington showed off a crazy expensive wheelset that is incredibly light for a 50mm depth and uses a continuous carbon spoke system. The real surprise, however, was Hunt. Hunt launched a wheelset that is thousands of dollars cheaper than the Partington offering, slightly deeper, and nearly as light. It wasn't only wheels, either. I saw a Tavelo aero bike with 40mm of tire clearance and a 650g frame weight that will likely cost half the price of its competition. The No. 22 3D-printed titanium bike definitely won't cost half of anything, but it was spectacular to see getting closer to production. It might even cost more than the lugged-carbon Colnago C72 that launched just before the show. Finally, we wrap it up with our favorite things from Sea Otter. Charlebois easily had the best answer, but jump into the comments on Velo and let us know what you thought was the coolest tech we reported on. 00:00 Intro: The Sea Otter Classic Experience 05:10 The 32-Inch Wheel Debate 19:30 Look G85 Gravel Bike 23:42 Wheel Tech: Partington vs. Hunt 27:56 Tavelo 650g Aero Road Frame 32:00 Sika Aero Gravel Bike 35:00 No. 22 3D-Printed Titanium Bike 37:20 Colnago C72 & Expensive Paint 40:14 The $25,000 Factor Bugatti Concept Bike 42:30 Our favorite things

With five feet of new snow on the Sierra Crest in April, Tahoe is finally getting the snow we should have gotten in March. As a result, the boys are back to skiing, with a couple days at the resort and a backcountry mission to the Eastern Sierra for the annual Green Creek Chute-Out. The boys talk about the concept of hallowed ground – places with spiritual significance and importance, and how social media has led the charge in exploiting these places, resulting in “hollowed ground”. The concept of gatekeeping is also discussed, and asking, is gatekeeping actually a bad thing when you are trying to protect hallowed ground from abuse of the masses?Other topics include new ebikes launched at Sea Otter, lift line DOPE or DERPs, is AI music a plague that should be resisted, upcoming events to check out, discovering the original ice cream man song has racist affilations, and CALL US BACK, GORDO! 2:30 – Winter isn't over yet – recapping a busy late season Palisades pow day11:25 – DOPE or DERP – The Rogue Single in the lift line16:20 – DOPE or DERP – Smacking your snowboard off the ground to remove snow18:08 – Pow Bot went wing foiling and Trail Whisperer got some hero dirt19:28 – Skiing the east side of the Sierra Nevada – Green Creek Chute-Out29:20 – The concept of hallowed ground and respecting special places35:45 – The Jackson Hole Air Force – the first JH skiers to ski out of bounds39:00 – White Man Hallowed Ground vs Native American Hallowed Ground42:40 – Gatekeeping and protecting Hallowed Ground44:50 – Hallowed Ground vs Hollowed Ground49:20 – Downhill Phil calls in – POP-CORN was the phone number, prefers the original theme52:44 – Colin says AI music is DERP. We're not afraid to share an opinion on this show. At no time was that more apparent then when Josh let his thoughts known about hookless road wheels. It caused a bit of a reaction in the industry to say the least. And while we have some firm beliefs on certain technologies, we also believe in fairness. Which is why at Sea Otter we gave some wheel brands a platform to explain what has become a somewhat divisive topic.  Our guests work for three brands: ENVE, CADEX and Mavic. Two of them stand behind road hookless as a high performance and safe feature. The third has stuck with hooked rims. All three bring a unique perspective on what it takes to secure a tire to a wheel. We also talk to these wheel makers about their brands as a whole: what's driving innovation, how pro peloton success turns into sales and for one of them, what it takes to revive a heritage brand.

This week the Velo team is at Sea Otter covering the latest tech and Mike Levy is holding down the fort. In this episode, Levy sits down with New Zealander Joe Nation, a rider who possesses one of the most uniquely varied racing resumes in the sport. Nation spent years following the mountain bike World Cup circuit as a privateer and racing in the Enduro World Series. Today, he's trading three-minute downhill runs for events that span thousands of kilometers. He placed third overall at the 2023 Tour Divide and won the grueling 1,939-kilometer Silk Road Mountain Race across Kyrgyzstan in 2024. Levy and Nation dig deep into the mindset required to survive these massive efforts, but they also look at the technology, the preferences, and the background that help Nation find success. In this episode, we cover: The Ultimate Dirtbag Origins: How Nation funded his European downhill racing by participating in clinical drug trials (earning the nickname "the white rat") and lived in a tent in the Morzine woods for two and a half months. The 100mm BB Drop Aero Hack: For the Tour Divide, Nation's friend built him a highly specialized bike through his company, Sufur Cycles. It features a massive 100mm bottom bracket drop designed purely for aerodynamics so he can get his head out of the wind. Why Flat Bars Win: Nation pushes back on the trend of adding drop bars to everything, explaining how flat bars provide better leverage on steep climbs and save his hands from nerve damage. The "Everyone is Dying" Superpower: Nation credits the realization that "when you are hurting, so is everyone else" as a major contributor to his ability to push through dark moments. Psychological Warfare at 3,800 Meters: How hiding your exhaustion can break your competitors, which is exactly what Nation did when he attacked the leader at the top of a massive pass during the Silk Road Mountain Race. Hunting for UFOs: It wouldn't be a Levy interview without discussing the unexplainable things you might see while exhausted and isolated in the wilderness. Can you imagine packing up everything you own on a bicycle, riding away from your home with plans to cycle the world over the next four years? Now imagine it's your first bike tour. That's exactly what Jacob Ashton did in 2016 when he rolled away from his home in Idaho. Over the next four years, he would cover roughly 77,000 miles, visit 100 countries, and ride across six continents. His travels were not without challenges. He was confronted by machete-wielding villagers in Mozambique, lost a finger to frostbite while climbing Ojos del Salado in Chile, and experienced a bowel obstruction in Khorog, Tajikistan that required major surgery and temporarily paused his tour. To date, he's accumulated over 120,000 miles, visited 108 countries, and ridden on six continents—and he's not done. Recently, Jacob has been trading touring miles for racing miles, testing his skills in events like the Tour Divide, the AZT, and most recently, DOOM and the East Texas Showdown. Jacob and I both competed at this year's DOOM, which is where we first met. He rode the long course and came in a respectable 7th place, following up a 2nd place finish the previous year. After a 32-hour "nap," he loaded up his full-suspension Starling Murmur and rode 400 miles to Point Blank, Texas, to compete in the 400-mile East Texas Showdown. ETS is a solidly a gravel ultra, and he was the only rider on a full-suspension bike—but he rode that thing like it was on fire, averaging 15 mph moving speed and finishing in an impressive 6th place. Coincidentally, after ETS he had plans to ride over to my hometown to visit an old friend, so I took the opportunity to meet up with him and dive deeper into his story. What if bikes could transform cities, create economies, and solve problems nobody thought they were for? We're joined today by Peter Abraham, one of the most connected strategic minds in the bike industry, just ahead of Sea Otter Classic. We cover a lot of ground: the state of the bike industry after a brutal few years, why e-bikes are reaching people the legacy brands never could, what London and Paris figured out about infrastructure that LA hasn't, and why Bentonville might be the most important proof of concept in outdoor sports right now. Plus: the $21 million Scotland Mountain Bike Innovation Center, the LA Olympics bike infrastructure push, and why the brands at Sea Otter with just a tent and a couple of bikes on stands are leaving a lot on the table. Reach out and touch us: shiftlesslive@gmail.comThe hosts record at Casa Verde after recent technical issues and discuss upcoming Fam Food Adventure Memories dinners. Bike topics include Schwalbe entering the 32-inch tire market across mountain, gravel, and reportedly road, plus a rumor of a major brand debuting a 32-inch bike at Sea Otter. They discuss a theory that brands are trying to convert post-COVID gravel buyers who aren't “N+1” riders by offering more stable, confidence-inspiring mountain bikes to expand participation. They talk about the Salsa full-suspension gravel e-bike (Class 3, ~40 lb, 2.2" tires, ~50-mile range) with a high price, and debate who the market is for. They also review the Salsa Stormchaser (frameset vs complete pricing, sliding dropouts, ability to fit 2.2" tires) and discuss bottom bracket standards (criticizing press-fit). The episode covers New Jersey's new law treating any e-bike as a motorcycle (lights, mirror, DOT helmet, plate/registration, insurance) and predicts more sweeping enforcement elsewhere due to high-speed e-bike accidents. The conversation branches into parallels with the gun industry's COVID boom, long-range shooting training to 800 yards, safety and education, and how event organizers manage participant risk. They close with planning notes for Trinity Trio (moved to Sunday the 15th, ~100 miles full route) and conclude with the host heading to Whitesboro to document the kitchen and refrigeration setup.00:00 Mic Check Mayhem: Are We Actually Recording?00:38 Welcome to Shiftless at Casa Verde (Weather, Vibes, Pool Talk)01:21 What's on the Agenda: 32-inch Wheels, E-Bikes & New Laws02:43 FAM Food Adventure Memories Sponsor + Dinner Schedule Updates04:50 January Dinners Canceled: Snow Forecasts, Ice, and Event Chaos07:11 Gravel Road Conditions After the Storm: Potholes, Chunk & Predictions10:21 February 28 FAM Dinner Promo + Menu Tease12:38 Sbarro in New York: The ‘Good Slice' Misunderstanding Storytime16:58 Back to Bikes: Schwalbe Enters 32-Inch Tires + Road/UCI Speculation18:37 The Big Theory: Turning Gravel Newbies into N+1 Riders via MTB22:13 Training Slump & Sick Weeks: Getting Back on the Bike23:16 Salsa Stormchaser Deep Dive: Dropouts, 2.2" Clearance & Build Options28:39 New Salsa Wander: Full-Suspension Gravel E-Bike Arrives29:13 Teal Talk & First Impressions of Salsa's New Gravel E‑Bike30:02 Specs Breakdown: Range, Weight, Tires, Class 3 Speed—and the $13K Question33:46 Salsa Lineup Rumors: Warbird, Spearfish, Name Changes & What's “Coming Soon”35:47 All‑Road vs Gravel: Surly Midnight Special, Industry Identity Crisis & COVID Hangover36:47 SHOT Show Parallels: Forecasting, N+1 Culture, and the ‘Year of the Suppressor'40:15 Range Life: Long‑Range Qualification, Training Layers, and Why Suppressors Rule47:00 Insurance, Scuba Tragedy & Event Risk—From Cave Diving Rules to Gravel Shenanigans54:05 Running Safer Gravel Events: New Rider Handholding, Self‑Responsibility & 101 Clinics01:00:12 Beginner Progression: Gear Overwhelm, Skill Layering, and Building a Real Training Program01:03:09 Back to Riding: Garmin Recovery Shock & Texas Chainring Massacre Weather Check01:05:05 Windy, deceptively cold night ride (wet bulb & layering mistakes)01:06:45 Whitesboro food service plan + kitchen/fridge scouting01:07:54 Locking in March dates & moving Trinity Trio to Sunday01:09:06 Trinity Trio route breakdown: Gateway–Sansom–River Legacy mileage01:09:48 What bike (or e-bike) works? A pair of Bald Eagles will reuse their nest each year and repair it with new tree branches. But recently in British Columbia, scientists came across an eagle nest made largely out of dried kelp. Back in the ‘90s, that very nest had been made out of tree branches. What changed? Sea Otters were reintroduced to the landscape, which helped kelp forests flourish — and occasionally wind up in an eagle's nest.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote?
