Today we are hiking up Slieve na Calliagh, also known as the Loughcrew Cairns (276m) in County Meath, with the very wise Hans. This episode is slightly longer than usual, so feel free to listen in two separate sittings! Hans lives with his family in rural Westmeath in Ireland. There he works as an Author, Musician, and Community Connector. He translated the bestseller "The Art of Living" by Sharon Lebell into German and tries to practice the stoic wisdom contained within. He also attempts to defend classic philosophers and poets from being taken over by bad actors in the manosphere.Connect with Hans here. See more about Stoicism here and here. To help the podcast hike up more hills, please be in touch with ideas of who I should be inviting on the podcast, and support me with some waterproof gear. All that and more here. Thank you to all the supporters as well as to the amazing band Bukahara for their permission to use their fabulous, on point song 'Storytelling Animal' as our soundtrack. The World is Storytelling podcast is based on the book by the same name. Written by Arjen Barel, Ronni Gurwicz, and Stu Packer, it is the definitive guide to how sharing stories can be used for social impact and personal growth. Buy your physical or digital copy today!
Sharon Lebell is a bestselling author, speaker, composer, and performing musician. She wrote The Art of Living: The Classical Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness, which is a book I highly recommend. In this episode, Sharon and I discuss the adventures of our lives, how to deal with the pleasant times and unpleasant times, the difference between action, thought, and intention, how to be empathetic, and more. We centre the conversation around Sam's speech from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers – if you are unfamiliar with that scene, I highly recommend giving it a quick YouTube search. If not, you will get the honor of hearing me read it (and no, I don't do it with a Hobbit accent). On the occasion of International Women's Day 2023, we talk about Stoicism and beauty. (See below for timestamps to skip forward to) Sharon Lebell is the author of the bestselling book The Art of Living which has inspired philosophy lovers and the modern Stoicism movement. Jennifer Baker is Professor of philosophy at the College of Charleston. She also writes for PsychologyToday.com Brittany Polat is the author of Journal Like a Stoic, the founder of Stoicare, a board member of Modern Stoicism and writes the Stoicism for Humans newsletter. Sukhraj Gill is a London-based solicitor and the Aurelius Foundation manager. She enjoys reading around Stoic ideas and practice. Kathryn Koromilas is a writer, educator and coach. She is a board member of Modern Stoicism, hosts The Stoic Salon Podcast and writes the Stoic State of Mind newsletter. In the age of the Instagram Selfie, isn't it true that many of us focus, often as a priority, on our physical beauty so that we might attract a lover, a life partner, or even a reputation, a career, or a social media following? But what if our real beauty is (and always was) found in the beauty of our mind and our reason, our character, our behaviour, our care for others? How might we as women help each other (but also help our partners, friends, and children of all genders) become aware that we (and they) are valued for moral beauty above all else? We'll explore what the Stoics might teach us about valuing our own internal, moral beauty, and also what they say about physical beauty. How might we do this? What are the challenges today? Two quotes to think about: If we could examine the mind of a good woman, O what a beautiful, what a sacred sight we would see! What grandeur, what calm would shine forth in it, and what constellations of the virtues: justice on one side, courage on the other, moderation and prudence over there. Besides these, frugality, self-control, endurance, generosity, and cheerfulness would shed their light upon it … what grace, and, by god, what dignity would these bestow! How great its authority would be, and how much appreciated: beloved it would be, yet at the same time revered. Seneca, Letters on Ethics, 115.3 As soon as they reach the age of fourteen, women are called ladies or mistresses of the house; they've grown up and gained some power. And now they see that there's nothing more to gain except to become sexually attractive. So, they set to work to beautify themselves and place all their hopes in that. It is worth our while, then, to make them aware that they're valued for nothing other than attaining self-control and self-respect. Sharon Lebell is a bestselling author, speaker, composer, and performing musician. The wrote The Art of Living: The Classical Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness, which is a book I highly recommend. She's also, like me, a founding member of The Walled Garden and it's an absolute honour to be able to work with her. Sharon is one of the kindest and most compassionate individuals I've ever met – and I don't say that lightly – and so I invited her on to talk about something that all humans inherently struggle with: loneliness: as philosophers and as human beings. We discuss how philosophy, over time, can be an antidote to loneliness. No more spoilers, dear friends, so without further ado, please welcome Sharon Lebell.

For over 25 years Sharon Lebell's internationally bestselling book, The Art of Living: The Classic Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness, has inspired philosophy lovers and the modern Stoicism movement. A contemporary interpretation of the ancient sage Epictetus' teachings, it is a perennial classic that is a cherished spiritual companion and daily guide for readers from every walk of life. Sharon is a strong proponent of expressing philosophy in accessible language so anyone can apply it to better their own lives and be invited to delve further into philosophical inquiry. The imperative to use our lives to improve the lives of others and the importance of beauty and engagement with art, music, and design are central to her message of what makes the best possible life.Since Sharon Lebell was a child, she was obsessed with the questions “how do we each live the best possible life and what does that mean?” She has thus spent her adult life writing and speaking about philosophy, spirituality, meditation, Buddhism, Judaism, ethics, feminism, and related topics. She is also the author of Naming Ourselves, Naming Our Children and co-author with Brother David Steindl-Rast of The Music of Silence. For more information about Sharon:https://www.sharonlebell.com/Follow us on social media:Instagram: @BetterPlaceProjTo follow Steve & Erin on Instagram:@SteveNorrisOfficial@ErinorrisFacebook: Facebook.com/BetterPlaceProjectPodcastEmail: BetterPlaceProjectPodcast@gmail.com

The Live Authentically podcast is back with Sharon Lebell, a bestselling author, composer, speaker and performing musician. Sharon joins Pam to talk about Stoicism, how to live your best possible life and her internationally bestselling book, “The Art of Living: The Classical Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness.”As per usual, Pam asks Sharon a pertinent question: “How do you live authentically?” To which Sharon responds, “I seek to live authentically every day by asking myself one question, and it's simply this: What can you do with the moment? What can I do with this moment? Because when you think about it, well, it's all we have.”It's true that the present moment is all that we have. And in this present moment, Sharon says we can make a choice that can resonate with us for years to come. It's hard for any of us to know exactly how, but we have the control to change the course of our lives by the decisions we make at any given moment.Getting out of the process of constantly unconsciously doing and shifting toward creating conscious choices isn't easy. It's not a problem that Sharon can conclusively solve. “But what I do believe we can do is set deliberate reminders to take a pause, to draw yourself back into yourself again, or to remember to remember,” Sharon shares. One of the ways Sharon says she does that for herself is by remembering that she's a musician. Sharon put a sticky note on one of her instruments so that when she passes by, she has to read it. The note reads, “Pay the toll,” prompting Sharon to play a tune on her instrument any time she reads the note.“I would urge other people to just find ways of reminding themselves… For lack of a better way of saying it, remind yourself to be who you decided you were going to be. I mean, you know, one of those aspects of that question for me is I'm a musician. Well, if you're a musician, pay the toll,” Sharon chuckled.Learn more about Sharon and what she has to offer by watching the full podcast episode here. Modern Stoicism is more diverse than I knew, I learnt when I spoke with Simon Drew, Kai Whiting and Sharon Lebell. In particular, the divine element in ancient Stoicism, which was central, has not been discarded by everyone involved in the recent Stoic revival. In this conversation, we talk about Stoicism, the Logos, the cosmos, Christianity, and the spiritual path of Dante's Divine Comedy. I hope it's enjoyable. For more on The Walled Garden - https://thewalledgarden.com

This is so important for this generation now in what we call the gig economy, we dabble in a bunch of things but not really committed to really going the direction we are meant to go. This is a conversation between Sharon Lebell, Peter Samis, and Simon Drew with a wide-ranging pool of topics, including being, forms, art, language, enlightenment, philosophy, and the importance of both reverence and irreverence. About Peter Samis (in his own words): My book "Creating the Visitor-centered Museum," co-authored with Mimi Michaelson, was published by Routledge in 2017. It documents innovative practices in museum interpretation through ten case study sites in the United States and Europe. I have spoken about it in China, the United States, and Italy over the past year and am happy to convey its messages to others. I am grateful to have worked at SFMOMA in a variety of capacities, paid and volunteer, for 35 years; my final position was Assoc. Curator of Interpretation. My initial studies at Columbia and in Paris were in anthropology and religion. Later, I went on to earn an M.A. in art history at U.C. Berkeley. Since then I have taught, curated, written, and been active in the development of interpretive technologies for cultural heritage. Way back in the 1990s, I served as the art historian/content expert for the first CD-ROM on modern art, "American Visions," and then spearheaded development of multimedia programs for SFMOMA's new building, which opened in 1995. Over the years, SFMOMA's Interactive Educational Technology programs received awards from sources as diverse as the American Association of Museums, the Webbys, Communication Arts, and I.D. Magazine. I taught for many years in the graduate program for Technology-Enhanced Communication for Cultural Heritage at Switzerland's University of Lugano, and served on advisory councils for many open source software initiatives. But around 2007, I realized that digital interpretation was not enough, and that visitors benefited most from a mix of analog and digital, interactive and environmental. That led to the research with Mimi Michaelson and our book. We discovered that as museums become more visitor-centered, hierarchies are dismantled and new teams emerge. We begin to listen to visitor feedback, and empathy builds. It turns out that "Nothing about us without us," that mantra of inclusive practice, counts for visitors, too! Stoicism, personal development, and the path of progress - that's what the Practical Stoic podcast was all about, and we retain this message now in The Walled Garden podcast and community. This episode is a re-release of an old podcast episode of the Practical Stoic Podcast (before rebranding to The Walled Garden). For a while, most of my pre-2020 episodes were only available to patrons. I have now made the choice to publish all pre-2020 episodes in order to give the complete view of my path through Stoicism, moving from the more practical personal-developmental ideas toward the deeper philosophical and theological understanding of Stoicism. The podcast is, of course, now called The Walled Garden. The Walled Garden came about in late 2021, and is a collaboration between myself, Sharon Lebell, and Kai Whiting. The Walled Garden is not just a podcast—it's a community of like-minded philosophers and seekers who are dedicated to the pursuit of truth, wisdom, virtue, and the divine. We hope you'll join us at thewalledgarden.com. If you're interested in one-on-one philosophical coaching with me, you can go to simonjedrew.com, or to thewalledgarden.com/mentors Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
