Tonight, my special guest is author Ryan Walters who's here to discuss his book Apollo 1: The Tragedy That Put Us On The Moon.  On January 27, 1967, astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee climbed into a new spacecraft perched atop a large Saturn rocket at Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a routine dress rehearsal of their upcoming launch into orbit, then less than a month away. All three astronauts were experienced pilots and had dreams of one day walking on the moon. But little did they know, nor did anyone else, that once they entered the spacecraft that cold winter day they would never leave it alive. The Apollo program would be perilously close to failure before it ever got off the ground.   But rather than dooming the space program, this tragedy caused the spacecraft to be completely overhauled, creating a stellar flying machine to achieve the program’s primary goal: putting man on the moon.   Apollo 1 is a candid portrayal of the astronauts, the disaster that killed them, and its aftermath. There are always opportunities for lacrosse goalies to play...up. The program might be short goalies. Kids might be on vacation. This week I uncovered a rather testy topic for some...the use of line drills. Today, we're going to talk about why, if you're coaching, you need to do away with this outdated drill. And if you're a goalie or a parent, why seeing line drills being used may be a sign that the coaches are out of touch with what's beneficial. As I watch lacrosse goalies each and every week, I sometimes wonder...”How the heck are we supposed to stop THAT!?” And as you know I often look to other goalies in other sports for inspiration. With that in mind, we can't discount the approach a soccer goalie takes to a penalty shot since they have the research that shows goalies don't have enough time to rely on their speed and agility to react to a ball shot from that close. This further supports my argument that goalies need to utilize more of what they have to make a save and not just their stick. A mistake that I see many lacrosse goalie coaches make is the use of ladder drills prior to shooting on goalies in the same drill. Every couple of years we need to revisit ways to reinstil the confidence in a lacrosse goalie who has lost it. For many of our goalies, the season has started or is about to. During my days as an Olympic athlete, I learned about how to conserve energy at every possible corner. Your job was to train and recover. Compete and recover. And then repeat the whole process. With that in mind, there are times when you can take simple steps to minimize or outright eliminate the strain, allowing your body to be able to focus on repair or to focus on the task at hand with more confidence. I have been critical of coaches who teach lacrosse goalies to read shoulders as a way to anticipate where a shot is going to go. Let's be honest, as a lacrosse goalie, there are times when the ball looks/feels/sounds like it's going to hurt. But the attitude a lacrosse goalie must have is that he or she HAS TO BELIEVE that they can stop every shot. And will make the best attempt at doing so. I'm not a fan of the crease dive. However, what I'm really not a fan of is a lacrosse goalie's lack of ability to and absolutely WRECK the player executing the dive. I feel the crease dive will go the way of the dodo bird once someone gets hurt (probably a goalie). In today's video, we're going to talk about goalies making an ‘over-move'. Not sure what else to call it really. It's when a goalie pretty much misreads the shot and moves past where the ball is actually going. Lacrosse at the highest levels has gotten incredibly difficult to read the shot. We'll take a look at the shot, the over-move, the defense (or lack thereof), and what you can do about it. The goal here at Lacrosse Goalie University is to create the lacrosse goalie of the future. One who plays better than the goalies of today. For years, I have done my best to encourage goalies to use more of their bodies to make saves. Legs are one of the primary tools that are underutilized mostly because of a lack of protection. As a coach, I believe that everything is possible with…progression. I”m sure your goalie can look at a lacrosse ball. I'm sure they can hold a lacrosse ball. They probably can throw a lacrosse ball. And they can probably catch a lacrosse ball. But at some point…and it doesn't matter if they are a middle school goalie or a pro goalie…they will develop a fear of the ball. It may be temporary.  It may last a little while.  Or… It may force them out of the game. An often overlooked technique for lacrosse goalies is, what I call, the hop-step. It's a way for goalies to move across the front of the net while keeping a rather stable base.  It has its benefits and its drawbacks. In this episode, I dissect some videos from MLL goalie (at the time) Sean Sconone.   Sean is a big dude.  And his footwork is excellent. And his technique, while rarely used by other goalies, is quite sound and something you should consider as you move in front of the goal. Enjoy.  Stay dangerous. A common mistake made by most lacrosse coaches who work with goalies is that they look at the goalie in the cage and think (wrongly) that the goalie should be centered in the cage based on the coach's eyes. This is NOT true.  The lacrosse goalie should first be centered on where the shot should be leaving the stick (Which can be difficult to do at times.) AND, they should then be what I call “offset” to their off-stick side. This is what I call Offset Goaltending and I have been taught this idea for years.  It is based on the fact that if a lacrosse goalie is going to, primarily, try and stop the ball with the stick, then that stick should be more centrally located in the cage. This is quite a simple concept if you think about it, yet lacrosse goalies have been plagued by bad coaching that effectively puts them in a very difficult position to make saves, especially to the off-stick side. When a lacrosse goalie is stopping shots, they aren't just stopping shots.  They are developing an understanding of shooters and their responses.  I call this the Shooters Library and a lacrosse goalies Save Library.  Just like when you went into the library (back in the day) and asked for a book, the librarian gave you a response.  It was the book you asked for. As a lacrosse goalie, you are responding to the shot.  You are learning how shooters shoot.  How they do what they do and when they can do it.  And you're developing your response to all of those shots.  That's your job. In today's episode, we're going to talk about how to develop your shooters' library and what to expect from shooters in practice based on your level of development.  It's gonna be a good one! Encouraging Lacrosse Goalies To Play Outside The Crease I want the lacrosse goalie of the future to be a threat outside of the crease more often than they are now.  If people are going to argue against more gear so they can be fast then let's at least make that happen! (Although if you've ever seen a baseball catcher run for a foul ball in pads you know that's not a good excuse.) One of the ways to do that is to look at your goalie not as a goalie but as a midfielder in the crease.  Once they get the ball, they should behave just like any other player on the field.   But coaches, and Sphincter Mom on the sideline, often yell, “Get back in the CAAAAGE!!!!”   This is a massive mistake. As an aspiring lacrosse goalie and the family behind said, lacrosse goalie, you're not always going to run into coaches who are as aspirational as you.  These are the coaches who are quick to tell you the odds of actually making it.  In their ‘experience' you are just on a path to suffering some fate experienced by every other kid out there who had big dreams and didn't make it. Snore. Now, that doesn't give you permission to not listen to coaches.  Coaches are those who are going to help you get better.  That's IF they are actually coaching.  This doesn't include some twenty-something in flip-flops standing as a placeholder on the sideline.  I'm talking about COACHES. I consider myself a pretty forward-thinking coach.  But not every coach is like that.  In fact, many are stuck thinking back to the days that they played and that's all they understand.  That's a real problem in the sport of lacrosse.  More so than any other sport.  There are, in fact, lacrosse coaches who think those chest protectors, slow goalies, down! Sheesh. I've gone on record saying that we don't really have a legit 'pro' level in our sport.   Yes, we have the PLL.  But...   ...It looks like a professional sport but it really isn't.   My definition of professional sport is that athletes are able to make a living competing in their sport AND there are dollars spent on research to make the SPORT better.  Not just the equipment.   Any research that has improved lacrosse has really come from outside of lacrosse.  Other sports.  Other athletes.   With that, I've also been on record saying that the current level of goalie in college and pro lacrosse is NOT the best example of what can be.  You only have to look at athletes from other sports to see the gaps in a lacrosse goalie development.   And while I love to see goalies making big saves, it's often from the goals that go in and the bad plays where we learn.   And that's what I'm about...I want the lacrosse goalie of the future to be better than the goalies of today.  The goalies of the future will have to save percentages that are improving.  The lacrosse goalie of the future isn't going to be happy with a 40 something percent save percentage in a national championship.   So in today's video, we're going to look at some pro goalies looking silly IMO.  They can be better.   Download My Lacrosse Goalie Cheat Sheets and Goalie Scorecards Because You MUST Remember, the Lacrosse Goalie ‘Grade' is NOT the Scoreboard!

Alan, Jeffery, Jordan, and Chase welcome a local celebrity, baseball player Geoffrey Orr. On this episode, Geoffrey discusses being cut from our local university, rebuilding the program at UAM with 8 players and a 6'11" tuba player, the feeling of reaching the pro level and how easy it is for him to throw up. We hear about playing in an alumni game in which he wasn't an alumni and why the pitcher "buzzed his tower"! Geoffrey tells us about his "hate/love" relationship with legendary college baseball coach Steve Goodheart and his experience at open tryouts with the Atlanta Braves at Grambling University. We listen as he tells story after story of his heading to Idaho Falls, ID, The Slump, rooming with Chipper Jones, meeting Jane Fonda, Halle Berry and Hank Aaron. Geoffrey tells us about being mentioned in Chipper's new auto-biography on page 81 revealing how he introduced Chipper to his first ex-wife. He also relays a funny story about taking batting practice with Primetime, Neon Deion Sanders and watching him in a foot race with a Dominican while wearing "...about 7lbs of gold around me his neck". He reveals the feeling of finding out his career is ending while in Macon, GA ("I never saw it coming"). We review the article written about Geoffrey called "The Greatest 21 Days". Finally, we have to let Jeffrey know that his own wife, Amanda, is championship-winning clogger! Geoffrey has his fire rekindled with slow pitch softball. He gives his opinion on making the pros then versus today and his respect for girls fastpitch softball! Poor Chase can't escape the "nose" jokes as they come at "rapid-fire" pace.
