POPULARITY
The elites are feeling weird again. Biden blames the Elites for pushing him to retirement, Marine le Pen and other populists are claiming to protect the little people against the Elites, the New York Times keeps hiring Harvard Men to write op-eds about how the Elites have failed us.... Everyone wants to go to Yale, but no one wants to be caught out as an Elite. Jessa and Nico talk about a new level of Nazi daddy issues, why rightwing think tanks are making art now, and what makes an Elite elite. Many of you may or may not have heard of a man by the name of Clark Dean, the 6'5" USA Olympian and Harvard Men's Heavyweight from the town of Sarasota, Florida. Well, fortunate for you, and here at the For Stars Podcast, we got him spotlighted, talking about United States Rowing as a whole both at the junior, collegiate, and olympic level. Clark has made a lasting impact on the past, present, and future of the USA with his intellect and skill in the rowing shell. During his 8th grade year (2014), Clark took his first challenge in rowing at Sarasota Crew, the nationally-ranked youth rowing program here in the States, leaving middle school with a 5th place in the nation competing in the Lightweight Youth 8+ at just 14 years of age. Freshman year of high school, Clark and his team got 7th in the Men's Youth 8+ (2015), 3rd in 2016 & 2017, leaving high school with a Gold Medal at the national stage in 2018. All while, competing with and for the United States Junior National Teams, during the summers of 2016-2018. Clark spent the summer of 2016 after his sophomore year making the USA U19 World's 4x, (having 3 Sarasota boys in that boat) and getting Bronze that year. The following year (2017), Clark got Gold in the USA U19 World's 1x amongst all countries, also competing in the 4+ with a 6th place finish. In 2018, Clark continued the streak of Gold Medals in that event going undefeated in the USA U19 World's 1x.Going into his freshmen year of men's collegiate rowing, Clark signed with Harvard, getting 2nd at Eastern Sprints and 3rd at IRA's. That summer of 2019, Clark skipped the U23 level and went right to the Senior National Team, stroking the straight four. He qualified the boat for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which was taken place in 2021, also stroking the straight four. Clark's journey is not done in the sport of rowing, and although this is his last year of racing for the Crimson, he is eager to help the next generation of rowers get to the next level, so be sure to reach out to Clark on Instagram @clark_dean to get some coaching/instruction.We talk about injury prevention, where he sees US Rowing in the next several years, the lack of funding in America for the Senior National Team level rowing (which is the only non-government funded rowing body in the World), reasoning to enroll at Harvard, and his experience with Mike Teti over at the California Rowing Club. Show Notes: Will Bachman and Tim Whitmire talk about Whitmire's journey since graduating from Harvard. Whitmire started as a freelance journalist, then got a job at the Associated Press and covered Harvard Men's Basketball. He moved to the Providence Bureau of the Associated Press and eventually to New York City. He was transferred to Lexington, Kentucky to work as a sports writer and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina after that. He worked at the Charlotte Observer and then returned to the Associated Press to work as the head of the Charlotte Bureau until 2006. Forming the Non-profit F3 Nation Tim Whitmire was working for the AAP when he decided to look for work in Charlotte, NC. He ended up getting hired in a marketing and business development role at a sell side and investment bank. He then co-founded a firm called Black Arch Partners, where he worked for a few years. After leaving the second bank, he found his way into his current work as an executive strategy consultant. Will then asked him about his nonprofit, F3 Nation. The Mission of F3 is to plant, grow and serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership. Finding Groups to Form Friendships Will and Tim discussed the difficulties men face in forming friendships. Will suggests that people meet through parents of their kids' friends, their work colleagues, golf clubs, or religious institutions. Tim Whitmire suggests F3, a free workout group focused on fellowship and fitness. Tim explains the format of F3 workouts. F3 stands for Fitness, Fellowship, Faith. The group usually meets at a local coffee shop where they can hang out and chat. F3 also encourages events such as distance running relays, mud runs, and, in Tim's words, "other completely stupid and utterly pointless activities" that foster friendship and bonding. F3's expansion process, called the Leap, involved creating a logo to sell gear from, with 10% of the proceeds going back to F3 for growth. Tim, a former member of the executive board of F3, explains that the group had to find innovative ways to get members out to cities in the Carolinas, and eventually beyond. In 2014, Tim took a trip to Richmond, Virginia, New Orleans, and Nashville, and others went to different cities. He would run workouts early in the morning and teach a class in the evening about the core principles of F3. This was called Gross School. He explains that the concept of shared leadership was developed and that each workout has a different attendee to lead it. The idea is to rotate the leadership of the organization to ensure that everyone is able to take on a leadership role. He also explains that F3 is now crossing international borders, with a Grow Rock event set to take place in England this fall. Team Alignment and Goal Setting Skills Tim Whitmire is an expert in team alignment and goal setting. He discusses the lessons of F3 and how they helped develop these skills. The main lesson is that not everyone has the same skill set or will lead in the same way, so it is important to leave space for people to express themselves and to lead. He also described the workouts themselves, which can be quite varied. His experiences with the group inspired him to co-author a book called Free to Lead about the F3 experience. Harvard classes and professors Tim found inspiring include: Verlyn Klinkenborg's creative writing classes, and George Dominguez' teachings on the Cuban Revolution. We’re pleased to welcome Reed Farley, a Senior on Harvard Men's Basketball, to the podcast. Well-spoken and articulate, Reed discusses why his brand, “Duglegur”, has been an important motto for him in recent years. Although the Icelandic term doesn’t have a direct English translation, the word “duglegur” means diligent and persevering (especially in the face of extreme adversity). Listen to hear more about: remaining positive for yourself and your team, overcoming the fear of re-injury, and stepping onto the court for the first time in over two years.

We sat down with Swimming's favorite Harvard swimmer, Dean Farris, along with the head and associate head coaches of the Harvard Men's swim team, Kevin Tyrrell and Sam Pitter. We started the conversation by getting a good look into what training has been like for the Harvard men this semester, which is very different than a lot of other college programs we've talked to. I think one of the most exciting parts about the Harvard swimming tradition is the HYP (Harvard-Yale-Princeton) tri-meet at the end of January, effectively the start of the 6-week taper for Ivy League Championships and NCAAs. Dean, Kevin, and Sam all give their take on what makes HYP such a fun and exhilarating event. Dave Fish, former coach of the Harvard Men's Team, joins us and reflects brilliantly on how the changes we are seeing in society at present can be traced in almost direct parallel through the development of the game of tennis in America and the establishment of the Davis Cup. He then looks across the Covid-19 issue and societal pressures and forms what he sees might be a new paradigm in local, national and international tennis. "Never Let A Good Crisis Go To Waste" Dave puts in perspective, by referring back to the 1960s and 70s and how his collegiate career progressed, how tennis and role models helped to maintain his goals and moral views as society questioned itself, much like today. Dave believes that Covid could positively and significantly change the face of tennis, from collegiate tennis through to junior tennis and even at the professional level. He sees a future that is much more "localized" through UTR, rather than chasing points through certain age categories. Funds might not be as available, in the near term, to juniors following Covid. The former Harvard coach sees a possibility in which a refocusing on player development in the coming years might bring success to American tennis again. Through the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) program, Dave believes tennis will also be further "localized" - with tournaments across all age groups based on ability, not age. More local play will be a part of the future picture of competitive tennis, from juniors all the way through to the professional leve. Dave discusses the NCAA rules and how they may come to affect decisions by junior tennis players in which some juniors are more than ever repeating 8th grade. This "gap" year then allows American junior players to compete with older European players who are participating at higher and higher rates in college tennis. Communication at the right time and through the appropriate avenues by a junior to a college coach is crucial for both the player and the coach, Dave points out, as they work through the recruiting process. And, having spent over 40 years as head coach at Harvard, how would Dave approach a parent and junior player who might ask: "I won't develop as much at college as I will on a pro tour... you might just keep me at number 5 for all four years." Dave's biggest challenge as a coach? Well, it wasn't getting James Blake on to the tour. Have a listen and find out what made Dave Fish one of the greatest tennis coaches in NCAA history.

John Kerr has had a storied career, paving the way for young Americans who at the time had few football stars to look up to. Beginning at Duke University, Kerr led the team to their first, and only, NCAA National Championship in 1986, while simultaneously winning the Hermann Trophy, establishing himself as the best player in American collegiate soccer that year. He then began his professional career in 1987, which spanned over 12 years, and saw him play for 16 clubs, spread across 5 countries. Along the way, Kerr became the first American to play in the English First Division, now known as the Premier League, while at Portsmouth, as well as playing in the first season of the MLS in 1996 with New England Revolution, He also managed to gain 16 caps for the USA Men’s National Team, scoring 2 goals in the process. Kerr gathered coaching experience through short spells as an assistant for the Duke Men’s team during his summer breaks in 1992 and 1993. He then gained some more experience in the final year of his playing career when he was named player/coach for the Boston Bulldogs, then competing in the A-League (a league which featured teams from Canada and the USA). Kerr was then named head coach for the Harvard Men’s Soccer team in 1999, and managed them until 2007, where he was then appointed head coach for the Duke Men’s Soccer team, and remains their head coach today. It's been awhile since I've talked about the WHOOP self-quantification wristband. A few things we learned in my last podcast about this unique device, entitled , include: -The key defining characteristics that set WHOOP apart, including skin conductivity, accelerometer data, and continuous HRV monitoring… -Why WHOOP is the only company to measure the activity and fluctuations of the cardiac autonomic nervous system, particularly as it relates to recovery, training status, and training readiness… -The actual hard data being collected by the WHOOP, and HRV, pulse oximetry, temperature, respiration, etc.)… -Why the WHOOP uses a combination of PPG (photoplethysmography) sensors (4 LEDs and 1 Photodiode) along with 3-axis accelerometer, capacitive touch sensor, ambient temperature sensor… -How coaches and trainers can use WHOOP to monitor the sleep, training and recovery status of a large number of athletes and clients… -Why the WHOOP has 90% sleep/wake accuracy compared to gold-standard sleep labs… -How the WHOOP sleep coach automatically calculates sleep needed based on your sleep baseline, any sleep debt that has accumulated over the last few nights, and any naps taken for that day… -The technology the WHOOP uses to tell you how much sleep you need and to give you a picture of when you should go to bed based on your habitual sleep efficiency and desired wake up time… -Why athletes like LeBron James and Michael Phelps are using the WHOOP… And in the article , you got a complete user review of exactly how the WHOOP worked out when a member of my team put it through the ringer for sleep, activity, recovery and much more. Then in the follow-up podcast "" we discussed how Crossfit athletes have been getting a ton of value out of the WHOOP. Today, Will Ahmed, the Founder and CEO of WHOOP, is back. Understanding 3 core parameters about the body: Strain Recovery Sleep Focus is on collecting data: 100 mb per person per day. 100x more than other wearables. Much more accurate understanding of the body Strong focus on Heart Rate Variability (measured 24/7) Triangulating data points. Recovery is the most important measurement. What is measured in the realm of sleep. WHOOP data is comparable to PSG, considered the "gold standard" of sleep measurement. Used by the NFLPA for recovery wear. -Why there's a very dim light on the WHOOP device, and whether there's concern about it affecting quality of sleep...19:40 Blue light stimulates the IPRGC, which tell your circadian rhythm that it's daytime. Don't look at screens at night. WHOOP emits green light; less capable of stimulating those cells. If wearing correctly, you can't see the light at all. Light on the body of the U/V spectrum is problematic. Seeing light much more consequential, than light being emitted onto your skin. -About the actual electricity, Bluetooth, wifi signaling of the WHOOP...23:20 Two different things at work Frequency Power emission Low power emission has very little consequence, even with sustained exposure. Power emission is measured by level of communication. (Cell phones are very high) Bluetooth have very low power emission. WHOOP is not constantly transmitting data; every 6 minutes. WiFi is extremely high power emission. If phone is in airplane mode, WHOOP stops transmitting data. -The research WHOOP has been doing on meditation...32:10 Partnering with Head Space and Arsenal on a study. (can't discuss details) Study involving float tanks. Gives effects of sleep without sleeping. Similar to a meditation session. Monitoring HRV, respiratory rate, heart rate and motion Independent woman did a mindfulness study For 3 weeks, had no mindfulness practice. Then for 3 weeks, meditated 3-4 times per day. HRV increased while practicing mindfulness; quality of sleep improved. -WHOOP's work with Navy SEALS and Army Special Forces...35:45 Worked with Army ordinance unit. 40 participants Half could see data; half could not. Those with access to data went to bed earlier; slept later than those without access to data. Navy SEALS test Sky dove from 14k feet into the ocean. Swam 3 miles to shore Ran 100 miles with 25 lb plates on their back. Focus on preventing overtraining; body wasn't recovering properly. By seeing data, helped with recovery. When they started, averaged ~6 hrs. sleep per night; after 3 months, averaged 7.5 hrs. -Research Will has done on stress reduction...42:30 Stress and HRV closely related. Less alcohol consumption. No caffeine after 4 pm. Exercise; but don't overtrain or undertrain. Drink more high quality water. (minerals, sea salts, etc.) Dehydration plays a large role in lack of recovery. Mindfulness. -The pros and cons of sleep regularity vs. sleep duration...46:45 Harvard study performed on students showed that consistency in sleep led to higher GPA "Sleep coach" within the WHOOP app recommends times to go to bed and to wake up. Minimum viable sleep. WHOOP takes napping into account (sleep need) -And much more!!! Last week I published an article on the new partnerships between Universal Tennis Ratings and the two major coaching certification organizations, USPTA and PTR (click here to read the article). And this week UTR announced another new partnership with Chinese Tennis organization Love Sports. Now, you have the opportunity to hear from UTR's CEO, Mark Leschly, about how UTR works and what's in store for the future. Since there seem to be a lot of misconceptions around UTR and its algorithm, I thought this would be a great chance to clear up some things and give you a peek behind the curtain. Universal Tennis is the company behind UTR powered by Oracle, a revolutionary system that provides a single, unifying language and standard for tennis players across ages, geographies and genders. The company’s vision is to unify tennis for everyone by bringing cutting edge analytics and community based technology to players worldwide independent of level. UTR is a unique, algorithm-based system for tennis that allows anyone to measure, identify and track their level relative to other players, while also providing tools for coaches and organizers to run UTR Powered Events that are level based rather than age or gender driven. Today the UTR powered by Oracle system is gathering data over 6.5 million match results, across 700 thousand players in over 200 countries. The Company is owned by Iconica Partners (www.iconicapartners.com) and other seasoned investors, advisors and operators in tennis, sports, technology and media. Partners include Ken Solomon, President of Tennis Channel; Mark Hurd, CEO of Oracle; Jan Leschly, former CEO of Smithkline Beecham and ATP Top 10; Ken Hao, Managing Partner, Silver Lake Partners; Tennis Media Company; and the LA Dodgers investment group. To sign up for UTR powered by Oracle, please visit www.MyUTR.com. Mark Leschly combines both an in depth knowledge and experience in sports and tennis with nearly 25 years of entrepreneurial management and investment in technology led businesses as a venture capitalist and startup CEO. He is a former ATP ranked player selected to the Danish Davis Cup, two time Captain and #1 player for Harvard Men’s Tennis and a member of the USTA Foundation Advisory Board and USTA Player Development Council. Mark is the Founder and Managing Partner of Iconica Partners, a principal firm investing at the interface of sports, media and technology. He is an owner in several sports teams and leagues including the Los Angeles Football Club (Major League Soccer team in LA), Professional Fighters League (a new MMA league), Team Liquid (esports) and Oklahoma City Dodgers (AAA Minor League baseball team). He is an owner and Managing Partner of Rho Capital Partners, a leading technology focused venture capital and private equity firm with over $2.5B under management (www.rho.com). Mark received an M.B.A. from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business and a B.A. with honors from Harvard University where he played tennis all four years. Thank you to STØNE for our music! Hello everyone, welcome to The Coach Steve Clark PhD Show. Thanks for joining me and I hope you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the conversation. Today I have as my guest a very long time friend and coaching colleague who has been a great voice for NCAA tennis and AMERICAN tennis at large, Dave Fish of Harvard Men’s Tennis. Dave is at his 39th year as the Head coach at Harvard. He was a1972 graduate of Harvard, played on 3 national championship squash teams and one Ivy Champion tennis team with the Crimson. Dave has had an impressive 626-284-1 overall record for a .688 percentage making him the winningest men's tennis coach in Harvard history. He guided Harvard into the NCAA Championships 22 times so far. He has tutored 15 All-Americans including James Blake (singles and doubles) Now achievements aside, Dave will be the first to tell you that more important is the character and integrity of a person. Dave is a great friend on both counts. He is more interested in the development of tennis than the focus being on him so, with that lets get into some topics for our young players, parents, and coaches regarding the NCAA, USTA, the UTR and more. Please see coachsteveclarkphd.com for more of my discussion, resources, blogs and podcasts.
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/whoop2 In the podcast episode , I introduce you to Will Ahmed, CEO of WHOOP, the first scientifically-grounded, self-quantification system worn by a growing number of professional and recreational athlete. Will launched WHOOP out of the Harvard Innovation Lab with his co-founders John & Aurelian, when as captain of the Harvard Men’s Varsity Squash team, he became deeply interested in how strain, recovery and sleep affected an athlete’s performance. WHOOP is currently used by Olympians, military, the world’s top trainers, and teams across all major U.S. professional and collegiate sports leagues. Since that podcast, Will has filled me in on how Crossfit athletes have been getting a ton of value out of the WHOOP, and introduced me to Mekenzie Riley, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist by trade who has her license through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as well as both a Bachelors and Master’s degree in dietetics from Eastern Illinois University. In 2016, she went to the Crossfit Games on Team OC3 Black, taking 5th place overall. Now in 2017, she been competing as an individual and finished third in the Atlantic Regional, punching her ticket to the 2017 Crossfit Games in Madison, WI. Will also introduced me to Seth Page, Owner and Co-Founder of Misfit Athletics (where Mekenzie trains). Misfit works with athletes of mixed modalities to prepare them to compete at the highest level in the sport of CrossFit. Seth started out in the more traditional field of fitness training in 2006 before transitioning to CrossFit in 2008, and began coaching athletes locally in 2009 as the sport began to gain traction. Since then, Seth and Misfit have worked with countless CrossFit Regionals and Games qualifiers. Seth's current focus includes experimenting with and refining programming for competitive athletes, all while training for his first Ironman race. In today's podcast, I have Will, Seth and Mekenzie all on the show together to talk all things WHOOP and self-quantification for Crossfit, Ironman and beyond, including: -Mekenzie's training protocol and qualifying strategy for the 2017 CrossFit Games...[14:30] -How Seth tracks eight different athletes each day and which parameters he looks at to make training decisions "on the fly"...[16:40 & 19:45] -How Seth differentiates between mental vs. physical fatigue...[26:30] -How Seth is using Crossfit to train for Ironman triathlon...[29:20] -Whether you need to be concerned about Bluetooth radiation or LED light signals from the WHOOP...[45:50 & 47:40] -Mekenzie's approach when it comes to Seth's diet, and why she has transitioned him from “carb backloading” to a more traditional diet for endurance athletes...[51:00] -How Seth and Mekenzie are using WHOOP to customize nutrition data...[60:00] -And much more! On Episode 12 of The Tennis Files Podcast, I spoke with Dave Fish, coach of Harvard University Men's Tennis, about the Universal Tennis Rating system (UTR). UTR provides tennis players worldwide a common scale to determine their level of play based on actual match results without regard for age, gender or where the matches are played. Dave also discussed audience-submitted questions regarding what it is like to be on the Harvard Men's Tennis Team. The UTR system helps facilitate more competitive matches and gives players a more accurate way of determining their skill level. Even John McEnroe is a fan of UTR because of its ability to provide players with more competitive local-based matchplay. With UTR, tennis players can compare their skill level with other players from all around the world. UTR is not only a wonderful resource for tennis players, but it helps coaches, parents, tennis associations and tournament directors more accurately gauge players' tennis abilities based on UTR's 16 level-scale. College tennis recruits can use UTR to figure out the ratings of a team's roster and help them decide whether that school is a fit for them and their tennis skills. UTR is an exciting new rating system that is revolutionizing the game of tennis. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
