I interview Teouta Luri, a Kosovar & ethnic Albanian who was born in Yugoslavia in 1976. She is the daughter of a prominent Yugoslav politician. We discuss: Why Tito was the most popular dictator ever. Why Milosovic's policies inadvertently brought on civil war. Why she thought getting married and having a baby in the middle of a war was a brilliant idea. Why Albanians love the USA more than anyone else. Whether women in Kosovo are more or less liberated than American women. Her first impressions of the USA. Whether there is an accent between Kosovars and Albanians. Why did I sometimes interrupt and talk over Teouta? Two reasons: 1. Teouta and I talked enough before the interview that I felt comfortable enough to talk with her like I talked with Sym Blanchard. I was comfortable enough to allow for natural banter to develop. 2. Like my interviews with Sym, we were in the same room with two separate microphones, so that makes it much easier to read body language and not have to deal with the lag that comes when you interview someone remotely (via Skype/Zoom). Was gibts so neues an Filmen mit Neo?
This week on the show we are taking you back in time and on an adventure we took to Boquete, Panama at the very start of 2020!We'll talk about why Boquete is a great spot to visit (maybe even an underrated destination), take you on a tour of some of the best things to do, and share what made it stand out to us.This episode is brought to you in part by Casco Antiguo Language School. Casco Antiguo Language School offers Spanish language immersion programs in Latin America's coolest neighborhood, Panama City, Panama's Old Quarter, Casco Antiguo. Their 1 on 1 or Small Group classes allow you to get out of the classroom and learn Spanish in real-life settings. They also offer free social activities every such as sunset bike tour, salsa dancing, happy hour, and beach volleyball. The school is located in the heart of this incredible colonial neighborhood that's also an UNESCO world heritage site. The school has a great social atmosphere and the teachers are incredible. We have seen such an improvement in our Spanish since we started studying there, and the beauty is they also offer classes online via Skype / Zoom so we are actually back in Canada now but can continue classes online with the same teacher. During this crazy time, it has given our lives some sort of routine, which we are loving. If you are interested in learning Spanish, you can head on over to www.cascospanish.com to start your language learning journey.

Lee Jamison has worked in a voluntary educational work among the Hispanic community for over thirty years. He has lived and traveled in Central America and Mexico and written guides to Spanish for Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. In this episode, we learn more about how Lee fell in love with Spanish, what makes his approach to learning different, and how he found a niche as an author. During our travels, we've found it so fun and valuable to learn local slang and customs, and so we were excited to talk with Lee about the importance of focusing on how people use a language instead of getting stuck thinking only about grammar. Welcome to episode 32. As promised, while the current Coronavirus situation continues to evolve and provide us with challenges, in each episode I will share with you a simple activity that you (or your pupils or your own children) can do to support your wellbeing. As many of us are spending more time in homes we share with other people, we may be getting to a point where we are more easily irritated and where rows might erupt. Here is an activity that may help - it is best suited to adults or older children and teens as it requires quite a deep level of reflection. This activity is adapted from Ryan Niemiec’s book Character Strengths Interventions: A field guide for practitioners (1). Either do this as a solo reflection activity - you may wish to write down your answers (be as detailed as possible, take your time) - or you can pair up with someone, ideally not someone closely linked to the person the activity relates to. Perhaps pair up with a friend or colleague via phone or video call and take it in turns to talk through your answers while the other person listens. Start off by thinking of a person that has hurt or offended you and think clearly about that person and the thing they have said or done that caused you hurt or offence. Look at the person and their imperfections in light of the complexity of being human - as a human being they have flaws and character strengths (see the VIA Institute on Character for more information on character strengths. What character strengths (however small) do you see in that person? Was the thing they said or did perhaps a display of one of their character strengths which they may have been over-using or using inappropriately? If you can, view this person as someone that needs to experience positive growth and transformation, or that perhaps is already working on this but gets it wrong sometimes. Now think about yourself: What character strengths did you show while the ‘offence’ took place? What character strengths are you showing right now? This activity guides us, via the use of character strengths, through a process called “positive reappraisal” which Ryan Niemic describes as “a type of meaning-based coping”. This enables us to add perspective and balance to situations, events and our views of other people and can help us change our perception from unpleasant or stressful to harmless and possibly even beneficial. Take the current Coronavirus pandemic, for example. Whilst the situation is undoubtedly difficult and traumatic - and for some far more than others - I have experienced many unexpected benefits and, judging by conversations and social media posts, so have many of you. From more time connecting with people because we make a special effort to chat on the phone or via Skype/Zoom etc, to experimenting in the kitchen, to making a conscious effort to exercise, there are many things we are now doing that we weren’t doing consistently or appreciating as much before. And for that, at least, I am hugely grateful. Looking at these positive aspects (whilst not negating the trauma, loss and hardship we are going through) is one form of positive reappraisal. According to research by Folkman (2), reappraising stressful situation (even when the stress is severe or distressing) through a more positive lens can improve our mood (or what psychologists call “positive affect”). When it comes to situations that have caused offence, such as in the exercise I suggest today, reappraising the situation with compassion can replace negative emotions with positive ones and can help us forgive (3). Let me know via @FlourishingED on Twitter how you get on with this week’s activity and how you are. I’d love to hear from you! Do also get in touch if you’d like to contribute content to this podcast as a guest, particularly if you’d like to share one or more activities that can help children, parents or other teachers at this difficult time. Also look out for a special edition longer episode of the For Flourishing’s Sake podcast - it is coming soon, I promise! - which is the audio of a virtual panel that I hosted the week before last. I look forward to catching up with you next week. Until we speak again, be safe, be well and For Flourishing’s Sake, have as great a week as it’s currently possible to have! References: Niemiec, R. Direct debits etc can also be reduced or stalled from car finance companies etc to really help you during this moment of uncertainty.2. Start with gratitude, isolation is not the end. Isolation is protecting ourselves, but just as importantly protecting those who are vulnerable. I believe with all of my heart if you listen to my podcast, you are like me. You care just as much for others as you do for yourself. If you didn’t, I wouldn’t imagine you’d be sticking around for long. So gratitude for us is a must. We should be grateful we are in a position to help others (even through technically doing nothing). We should be grateful for having a roof over our heads, access to water and toilets/showers. The ability to connect via FaceTime, Skype, WhatsApp or mobiles to all our loved ones too.3. Read some books. Or if you’re like me listen to them. This is a time to enhance your mind without the pressures of being somewhere else or having to do anything else. Books allow us to time collapse our journeys, change our perspectives and just develop. If you want recommendations please let me know, although most of my books are non-fiction personal developments. But even if its a fiction book, knock off those slippers kick back and read to your hearts content.4. Watch this is us. Now I am obviously looking for an endorsement but this show has been incredible. It looks at all the different obstacles and adversities we face in life, from parenting, to racism, to self-image, confidence etc Yet the messages are beautifully scripted and acted out. I literally leave each show with my heart full and head bursting with ideas for blogs and podcast shows to hopefully help you all.5. Recharge your batteries. So often in life we are on autopilot and rarely take a step back to look at our well-being. This is time to sit back, re assess your life and see if the story you are writing is one you want to continue to writing. Would you be happy doing this for the next 10-15 years? If no, then you have such a huge possibility to change your future by starting today. 5 years ago today I would have believed I had to work till I was 65, yet here I am able to connect with you all and do the things that fill my heart more than anything in the world. It took blood sweat and tears but it started with the decision to do so. You have that power to make the decision now, even if you think you don’t.6. Clean! If you’re a guy, do some handy work around the house and clean. You will get yourself some brownie points, but you also have a cleaner house & decluttering helps with your mind space.7. Skype/Zoom people. This is crucial, because although it won’t replace physical social interaction we need to communicate with people, and we do not want to suffer with loneliness. So reach out to your loved ones. Hey reach out to me! I am always active on Instagram and ill try to reach back out to you too.8. Journal. If you are suffering with anxiety in this time, journaling is my #1 tool for combatting overwhelm and anxious feelings. Just throw anything and everything in your head onto paper and watch your brain feel lighter, mood get brighter and smile get wider over time. Its powerful beyond belief!9. Start your day with Find Your Voice Podcast!10. Learn something new. Okay so to date we probably learnt a few celebrities have got coronavirus and that its taking over the world, with people snatching toilet rolls and doing all sorts of crazy habits. Well the time you spend, reading the same information that will only add to your anxiety, perhaps you could randomly research something you’re interested about? How about brain health? How about the benefits of adversity? Or how to cook pad thai? How to exercise at home? It can truly be anything, but time I something we will never got back. Skill sets and new learnings are also things we will always have. Recently I asked myself the question "who am I if I'm not my work?" And I realised I didn't really know the answer. My work has defined me for so long, and I hadn't even realised it until now. So this solo episode is me discussing my thoughts on this. Sharing how I've been thinking about this question of identity, and approaching it from a yogic perspective too. In a society that's very driven by success and achievements, and our first question when meeting new people is often "what do you do?" I think it's super important to loosen the grip our work has on our identity. I hope you enjoy the episode, it's another one recorded out on a walk and so as always you're invited to join me on a walk as you listen. If you did enjoy don't forget to share the episode with anyone else you know who may enjoy it. Thanks for listening as always, Ellen x Interested in 1:1 Holistic Health coaching? Welcome to episode 199. Well what an amazing response we had to last weeks debate with John Nemo about LinkedIn automation! One of the key points that came out of episode 197 is that myself and John have very different ways of generating business and many of you wanted to know more about my way of using LinkedIn to generate 95% of my business without the need to play the numbers game. So that is going to be the main theme of this episode. But first….. Interesting Stuff I Saw This Week Introducing Salary Insights on Jobs LinkedInfluence I received this question prior to last weeks episode and I thunk it hits on a really important question I enjoy John’s (Nemo) podcasts too and find them to be useful. He also believes in providing value which aligns well with your strategy and what I believe in. That said, on the providing value yet pushy scale, John is totally different from you which is why I appreciate your style a lot more. The question for you though is how does one avoid being pushy like John, provides value like you both do, but also builds a solid bridge to the services that are provided by you and/or your organization. For example I have now downloaded and heard at least 20+ of your past episodes. I love them! I love your style. However I am not sure what you do besides some LinkedIn workshops which you have very briefly mentioned on your podcast. Of course I know I can go on your web site and find out, but isn’t that a lost opportunity? If I run into someone tomorrow that needs services you can provide but I don’t know about them, wouldn’t that be a loss for you? The reason I ask is that I have also approached my networking in person with the same mentality. I have for years provided lots of value to people in the business community here in Washington DC. They love me and the relationships are strong. But I am not sure most would know what opportunities to pass on to me. Of course that’s why I am getting more active on LinkedIn and working on content generation but also find somethings John talks about to be appealing. Eg automating messages to contacts...which add value and lead them to more ‘sales’ options. Anyway, just a thought about balance on the spectrum of ‘pushy ness’ and how you build an effective bridge to sales for people that see you as a credible resource So I thought it would be a good idea to go through my recommended approach to winning business on LinkedIn. Some aspects of this are not related to LinkedIn but nonetheless, very important Define your product or service and it’s target audience (customer avatar) Focus this down to something very specific - the more niche the better. Be brave - don’t worry your market will be too limited, the more niche, the better. Your most effective marketing tool is the quality of what you do. Spend time and money on; Personal development and training The best quality equipment Practice hard and perfect your product Innovate. Make your product unique in your market Put together a clear and thorough content strategy (not just limited to LinkedIn) Video Written Audio Images Get active on LinkedIn in the following areas; Topics - define five key topics that are relevant and interesting to your customer avatar. Search for people who are though leaders and experts in each of these five topics. Follow and in time, connect with them. Search for content in each of these five topic areas and follow anyone who is posting about these topics Engage. Like and comment on posts from 2 & 3 above. Jump right in and get involved. This will raise your visibility in relevant communities. Post. The aim of posting is to draw people into commenting - this is where the magic happens! Posts that resonate are often light natured (see image below). Go deeper. As you engage with relevant people (not just potential customers) selectively take it to the next level by suggesting meeting for a coffee or via a Skype/Zoom call. Your aim is to become well known as; Knowledgeable in your niche subject Interesting and thought provoking Helpful and generous A book you might find interesting
