As early Christians carried their faith into all parts of the world, they came across some intriguing figures. One of these was a Samaritan sorcerer by the name of Simon. As Philip shared the good news, the people of Samaria, including this magician, believed and were baptized. However, Simon had to learn that salvation entails not only baptism but also putting away those attitudes and actions that characterized the old man of sin. This study will contrast the two men as well as emphasize what Jesus has to offer and the seriousness with which it should be accepted.  A sermon given by Greg Chandler on April 30, 2023

This week's guest is writer, actor and comedian, Philip Simon.Philip started out as an actor, attending the Guildford Theatre School before landing his first professional gig in a commercial. After a long run as Daddy Pig in a staged puppetry production of Peppa Pig, he decided it was time for a change and enrolled in a course at The Comedy School in London. On the stage performing standup comedy is where Philip feels immense joy. We chat about his work and also the sudden impact of COVID lockdowns on performers. While unable to entertain audiences in person, the father of two acted as head teacher for his kids and also created “School's Out Comedy Club”, an online comedy program for kids. Out of that came a kids' comedy book and the opportunity to give back. Profits from book sales go to the charity FareShare which fights against hunger in the UK.Philip also teaches sex education in Jewish schools and hosts the podcast “Jew Talkin' To Me” with fellow stand up comic Rachel Creeger. He'll be at Edinburgh Fringe this year with two shows so check out the details below. You'll want to find out where to watch him after listening to this one!Note from Rabiah (Host): I have to admit, editing this one was not easy. Sometimes I spend a lot of time reflecting on what a guest said. Sometimes I even cry. In this case, I did a lot of laughing! I am always grateful to my guests for taking the time to share stories about themselves and to listeners for taking the time to hear them. He received early encouragement to develop his musical talent from his mother Betty and father Hymie, who also contributed with suggested lyrics and song titles.Graham played with various Manchester bands before forming The Mockingbirds in 1965 (with Kevin Godley on drums), and when the record label Columbia rejected Graham's first single composition for the band, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The song, For Your Love, became a huge hit for The Yardbirds.Working by day in a men's outfitters shop and playing by night with his semi-professional band, Graham went on to write a string of hits. In 1972, along with Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, he formed 10cc and enjoyed a string of Top 10 hits, including three No 1s – Rubber Bullets, I'm Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday. It's the enduring popularity of these tracks and Graham's love of playing songs acoustically, that led to the formation of Heart Full of Songs, a show which features many of these songs.--------------------------------------------------------------------- *This episode was recorded under lockdown conditions. Here's part II of my chat with Philip Simon. To recap, as a child Philip played hooky from school to read in the library, graduated high school and lived in a cave (as he pursued monkhood), and taught himself markets and finance by reading every single word of the FT and the Economist for four straight years. We pick up part II with Philip's corporate development role at a high frequency trading firm. We discuss “dual consciousness” or bringing two different versions of yourself to work and if it's a luxury to break out of that paradigm; the "duty of the strong to protect the weak" and how that interacts with the concepts of self-reliance and privilege; and alternatives to the broken model of growth capital/capitalism, such as mutualization, B-corps, or mission-driven companies. + SHOW NOTES: bit.ly/radpod28 + JOIN THE COMMUNITY: http://radreads.email

Philip Simon is the "Rad Genius." His life and career have bucked convention and traditional narratives, and are the consequence of a ravenous curiosity and thirst for knowledge. Philip's story starts in the library, where as a kid he would read multiple books a day (an estimated 1,500 by the time he graduated). After graduating, he dabbled in the Marines, moved to a cave in Greece to pursue a life of asceticism (i.e. severe self-discipline and abstention from all forms of indulgence) and restored ancient fresco paintings. He taught himself financial markets by reading “every single word” of the Financial Times and Economist for four straight years, which led him into cold calling for stock brokers, an Internet startup (the Ladders) and the world of high frequency trading (GTS). + SHOW NOTES: bit.ly/radpod28 + JOIN THE COMMUNITY: radreads.email

Next, the new Director of the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD), Ana Harvey sits down with us to talk about the programs available to DC's small businesses.
