Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Many autistic people go through their whole school career without a diagnosis at all. For those who do receive a diagnosis during this time, it can be hard to then obtain additional support that would enable them to thrive. However, in many cases, the support that is available once in adulthood can drop off a cliff. In this episode we look to explore how far things have come and what more can be done in the future to tackle this issue and, ultimately, improve the astonishingly low levels of employment amongst autistic adults. Our Guests in This Episode: Anna Kennedy, OBE Mark Blakey – CEO of Autism Parenting magazine Andrew Crosbie - Volunteer Co-chairperson of the South Lanarkshire branch of the National Autistic Society Wendy Flewitt - Transitions Support Service Coordinator for England at the National Autistic Society

Getting funds to invest in technology is really only the first hurdle for schools and local authorities. Driving adoption of these tools also presents challenges. That's because there are a lot of stakeholders and voices within education. To be able to select the right tools and drive usage there needs to be engagement with the whole school community. In this episode, we hear from different perspectives to help local authorities and schools on their EdTech journey. Listen as South Lanarkshire Council share their story to rolling out devices and software across their 150 schools. You'll learn from education support officers, right through to parents.----------------------Don't miss South Lanarkshire's event on 12th September at Duncanrig Secondary School to discover how they are making use of a variety of tools, including Read&Write.

Independent Thinking - Exploring a new era for retail and the high street
In the last episode of this series, this week we're speaking to Food by Nourish, a gourmet grocer and deli, based in South Lanarkshire. Created by friends Greg and Richard, the business started life in a humble van (the Tattie Wagon) delivering veg throughout lockdown, but my, have they come a long way since then. We talk about food as a force for good, running with an idea, an unfortunate lack of Piccalilli lovers locally and why, if an idea's no good, well "it goes in the soup"... We recorded this one a while back, but it's only now mainly for technical reasons that it's been able to go out - listening to it back I remembered how fun this one was to record, how funny they were, and how invested they both are in making sure their produce is as high quality as it can be - so reckon you'll enjoy this one! This week's Scottish Field podcast marks an important moment in history. One hundred and fifty years to the day since Henry Morgan Stanley found the missing Dr David Livingstone in Africa, and reputedly greeted him with the words 'Dr Livingston, I presume?', we commemorate the life of the great Scottish explorer. From his humble beginnings in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, we speak with Grant MacKenzie, interim director of the the David Livingstone Birthplace Museum, which re-opened in July this year after a lengthy £9.1 million revamp. Grant talks us through the highlights of Livingstone's life, and puts his life in context, revealing how he fought against the slave trade. Scottish Field's Kenny Smith and Rosie Morton also discuss our latest edition, our Christmas issue, which is packed full of festive gift ideas.

UKIP’s recent election results stirred things up down in England. Lesley was keen to point out the differences between UKIP and the SNP after parallels had been drawn in her Scotsman column. After an event “Who Runs Culture in Scotland?” in the Tron with a packed panel, including Alasdair Gray, the answer is a bit clearer. The ‘Poverty in South Lanarkshire’ conference and some biological explanations from the Chief Medical Officer prompt some out loud thinking. The long overdue recognition of the Arctic Convoy heroes is something we also touch upon respectfully in this week’s @lesleyriddoch podcast.
Clare Balding is walking with dogs (and their owners) throughout this series of Ramblings. Prog 4: Larkhall, South Lanarkshire. This week Clare Balding travels to Larkhall in South Lanarkshire to meet Scott Cunningham. A veteran of some of Britain's long-distance walks (including the West Highland Way, the Pennine Way and the Southern Upland Way) as well as the bagger of multiple Munroes, he never walks without the dog, he describes as his 'best-mate', Travis. On this walk around the Larkhall area, he describes the intensity of their relationship and the joy of his companionship. This will be a particularly moving walk for Scott, as Travis - who is a guide-dog - is retiring the following day, and a new dog, Milo, will take over. Scott was awarded an MBE last year for his achievements, which include raising over £150,000 for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Producer Karen Gregor.
