Musiques : Alpha Blondy and the Solar System - Peace in Liberia ; Melanie Pain - Dreamloop.

Steph and Miles Drewery own and run the Sausage Press Deli Company - a traditional charcuterie making a range of small goods. After running cafes for years the two trained chefs switched gears and began making sausages using an old sausage press inherited from Miles' father who produced salami in Auckland in the 1980s. From their property in Upper Moutere they've created a range of handcrafted artisan smallgoods based on their own recipes, using traditional methods and natural ingredients. Miles speaks to Susie about how the business and its special link to the past.

When evaluating funding pitches, Touch Capital founder and CEO Anna-Lena Kamenetzky doesn't pull any punches. Her straightforward style is shaped by over two decades of global experience as a brand operator and board director at multinational companies, including Keurig Dr. Pepper and JAB Holding Company. She's helped incubate and build billion-dollar brands, and understands what it takes to succeed in the highly competitive food and beverage industries. That perspective guides the vision and funding strategy for Touch Capital, a recently launched venture capital firm led by Kamenetzky that invests in consumer brands across food, beverage, pet and personal care. Touch Capital was founded on the thesis that CPG conglomerates “will continue to need to ‘buy-in' innovation through strategic acquisitions.” By leveraging their collective operational experience, Kamenetzky and her team support portfolio company founders, including those of fast-growing brands Super Coffee, Lesser Evil and Catalina Crunch, by bringing “buyers'-side experience to the builders.” We spoke with Kamenetzky during Taste Radio's live podcast and meetup event in Austin, where she discussed the formation of Touch Capital, how global trends help inform the firm's investments, how she evaluates innovative brands and their scaling potential, and the impact of a talent shift towards entrepreneurship. She also explained why investor feedback and input only works “if it's a pull and not a push,” how founders can mitigate risks for investors and offered a candid perspective on trendy concepts, ingredients and food and beverage categories. Show notes: 0:45: Interview: Anna-Lena Kamenetzky, Founder & CEO, Touch Capital – Kamenetzky and Taste Radio editor Ray Latif chatted about Miami's entrepreneurial food and beverage community before discussing how her experience as a beverage operator and an observer of global trends has impacted her perspective as an investor. She also discussed the value of entrepreneurs with prior industry experience, why an “‘A” idea doesn't work with a “C” team, how she identifies potential for mainstream appeal in early-stage brands, and why “can they pull it off?” is a key question in how she evaluated founders and their plans. Later, she shared her take on notable trends, ingredients and emerging categories, including keto, gut health, cannabis and RTD cocktails. Brands in this episode: Super Coffee, immi

Phil and Jake are rank the 1983 fictional band biopic Eddie and the Cruisers, the 1999 Latin pop hit “Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of…)” by Lou Bega, and being possessed on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Jake and Phil are always on the grind trying to make money while they sleep, trying to monetize, etc. Just the most craven shit you can imagine. Pod-Bucks are how Phil and Jake get paid for making this podcast. A Pod-Buck is kind of like a No-Prize but without the envelope. Actors that we discuss include Tom Berenger, Ellen Barkin, Joe Pantoliano, James Franco, Michael Paré, Rick Springfield, Gary Oldman, Dan Aykroyd and Bob Saget. Many musical acts come up during the episode, such as Bruce Springsteen, Dion and the Belmonts, My Chemical Romance, Damaso Perez Prado, Aerosmith, Ice Cube, Spinderella, Bell Biv Devoe and Chris Gaines. We talk about how The Doors were used as an inspiration for Eddie and the Cruisers, but we fail to draw the connection that there were also rumors about Jim Morrison faking his death. Songs discussed include “On the Dark Side” by John Cafferty (which is from the movie), “Quarter to Three” by Gary U.S. Bonds (maybe Phil's favorite song of the 20th century), “Project Chick” by Cash Money Millionaires, “Kokomo” by the Beach Boys, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cindi Lauper and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dione Warwick. Phil mentions a song from the movie called “Special Touch” but the actual name of the song is “Down On My Knees” (also by John Cafferty). Phil's right when he says it sounds like “Hurts So Good” by John Mellencamp. Other movies discussed include That Thing You Do!, West Is West, Streets of Fire, Jersey Boys, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Howard the Duck, Caddyshack, The Matrix, The Truman Show, Drumline, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Exorcist, All of Me, Ghost, Ghost Rider, Ghostbusters, Evil Dead 2, Repossessed, R.I.P.D., The Frighteners and of course Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! Streets of Rage is the arcade game Phil mentioned that uses the common trope of a power up of a whole roast chicken that makes the player regain his health. The Palace of Depression was a real place in Vineland, New Jersey. Jake claims that Eddie and the Cruisers used the actual site as a shooting location, though the internet implies that it was razed in 1969 so maybe the one from the movie was a recreation. Jake calls meals_by_cug a Jersey guy but it looks like he's from Staten Island. We refer to our episode featuring Dave Hause, in which we go over Dave's USA Today piece about Taylor Swift and master tapes. Here's the scene from The Simpsons where Bart tries to buy a novelty license plate. Brian WIlson had a nervous breakdown when he heard the Beatles' Revolver. Sleep paralysis is the worst. Jake cites Scottish folklore that attributes it to a witch sitting on your chest. We couldn't trace the story to Scotland, but we did discover the night hag, which isn't too far off the mark. We don't actually get into the movie, but Silverado is an 80s neo-traditional Western by Lawrence Kasdan with a stacked cast that Phil's never seen, and is the one movie that Phil will never be invited over to Jake's house to watch. You can hear the rhythm part take center stage while the lead compliments and answers the rhythm on "EYES IN THE NIGHT", and hear Lou's strong "swing-feel" on "TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE".
Restaurant entrepreneur "Chando" Madrigal knows first hand "not everything you touch turns to gold". The Pandemic was not as rough on his business as others as you'll hear him tell it and he has doubled down and actually opened up new locations as the opportunity has presented itself. A fascinating story playing out as we speak, the expansion of his restaurants into other states reinforces that American Dream for those willing to manage the risk. The Americans with Disability Act defines a disability as “a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity.” How many Americans suffer from a disability? Estimates range from 13 percentof the U.S. populace to 20 percent. That’s between 40 and 60 million persons. In Episode 165 of the Influence Podcast, Influencemagazine’s executive editor, George P. Wood, talks to Charlie Chivers about how to make your church disability friendly. Chivers is founder and CEO of Special Touch Ministry, a non-profit faith-based organization, committed to serving people with intellectual or physical disabilities, their families and caregivers. Special Touch is interdenominational in scope, but Chivers is an ordained Assemblies of God minister and a missionary with AG U.S. Missions.

Founded in 1982, Special Touch Bakery was launched by Holy Childhood as a means to train and employ people with intellectual and developmental disabilities alongside their non-disabled peers. At Special Touch, a baker is a baker-- they celebrate all abilities! Holy Childhood is a non-profit agency, which serves more than 200 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, in its School Program (ages 5-21) and in its Adult Program, which serves people from age 21 through retirement. Services include individualized education, vocational training, transition and skills training, supported employment and diagnostic and treatment services. In addition to their inspiring purpose, Holy Childhood was recognized in 2017 by the Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation with an "ETHIE" Award for their ethical, conscious culture. It's hard to believe that it's been a year since Conscious Capitalism ROC and Rochester Rotary helped celebrate the grand opening of the newly expanded special touch bakery! In this episode, Andrew sits down with Holy Childhood's President & CEO Donna Dedee (whose career has spanned from television journalism to Senior Vice President at the United Way to CEO of Bishop Kearney high school) as well as Public Relations Manager Laurie Otto. Learn about how the growing facility has helped Special Touch to grow their mission over this past year, and don't forget to order your #BestPieEver before November 16th to get it in time for Thanksgiving!

Sergey Petrograd and discussion of depression
We re talking about spiritual champions. You know I love it when the bully gets it. You re watching a movie and the bad guy gets what s coming to him. That s always the highlight of the film for me. Or even in real life, when a bully gets it, gets his/her just due, it s a good thing. I came across a video that really tickled my funny bone. It was a shot where a martial arts expert was in one of our large cities to film a video on how to defend yourself against street attacks. Ironically, one of those happens while he is there filming this video. Across the street from the hotel where he was staying, a pimp was physically abusing a woman, assuming she was one of the women that worked for him. The man heard the commotion and went across the street, confronting the pimp. He said, Take your hands off that woman; leave her alone. Something bad s gonna happen to ya if ya don t. Scared enough sense into the pimp that the pimp backed off and the karate instructor felt like it was a safe situation, turned around and started to walk back to the hotel. The pimp had lost face there in front of his pimp friends, and he decided he was going to defend his honor. So he proceeds to verbally challenge the instructor. You don t hear this on the tape; and there is no audio other than the narrator telling us what is going on because it is shot from inside a building looking down on the scene of the street. You can t hear the dialog outside; you just rely on the narrator. So they grab the pimp, and they re trying to hold him back, and he s pulling and tugging to the point where his t-shirt is starting to rip off, kinda like the Incredible Hulk when he changes. He bursts out of the t-shirt, and now nothing is holding him back. He starts going across the street to confront the martial arts instructor, who has now stopped, turned around, and begins assessing the situation. The narrator is describing that what the pimp doesn t know is that the man he is about to affront is a martial arts instructor. I m sitting there thinking, This is gonna be good. This is gonna be good. He comes walking up there as such, and the pimp just waits calmly for him. As soon as he gets within striking distance, what is he going to do? Hay-ya! Yah! I don t know what he s going to do. I m just excited, and he goes like this; I didn t expect this move and neither did the pimp: He goes BAMB, with his forearm, catches the guy across the face and the neck, and drops him like a rock. The pimp is lying in the street-OUT. The martial arts instructor waits, makes sure he s taken care of. Finally, he turns around, raised his shoulders like what else could I do? and walked away. They pick up the pimp, and he kind of staggers across the other street, embarrassed and rightly so. It s good when the bully gets it, right? We like to see strong people come to the defense of the helpless and the weak. So what does that have to do with Special Touch Ministries? I m working on that. I haven t figured it out, but it was a good story, and I did want to share it with you. It does have something to do with today s message. In Psalms 82:3, God s word says, Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless. Maintain the right to the poor and repressed. Rescue the weak and needy. Deliver them from the hand of the wicked. In other words, God says, If you want to be a hero in my sight, help those who cannot help themselves. Defend those who need defending. Help those who are bullied. He s talking here about bullies. God is saying, Beat up a bully! Come to the defense of those who need your help! The media we saw was very well done today. But I want to tell you something: Every single person you saw at that camp has been bullied. And I don t mean physically. Maybe some of them have been physically bullied. But there are some bullies that torment those people. There is the bully of despair, which tells them they are different, and there is no hope, and life will never change for them. There is the bully of loneliness, which says, You know what? This is your lot in life, and you re different. You re not going to have happiness. There is the bully of rejection, as people who may laugh at them, or make fun of them, or turn away from them in disgust. That bully picks on them all the time. There are bullies of fear. There are bullies of being devalued by the world, because they are not normal; they are of less value. God says in his word, Beat up a bully. Find somebody who is weak or lonely or in despair, and beat that bully up. Beat loneliness up. Strike a death blow to despair. Show somebody who needs your help that they matter to you, and they matter to God. That s what this is about today. This isn t just about Special Touch. This is about our church becoming strategic with reaching out to people with special needs. You know Jesus was strategic with that. Look at his body of work. Who did Jesus spend most of his time ministering to and helping? Was it the rich? Was it the elite? The politically prominent? The powerful? The aristocracy of his day? Or was it in fact the poor? The oppressed? The defenseless? The children who didn t have a voice? The widows who didn t have a voice? The crippled? The paralyzed? The blind? The beggar? The diseased? The man or woman struck with leprosy? Jesus was continually drawn and attracted to them. The disciples would say, He doesn t have time for you. And the crowd would push him back. He doesn t have time for you outcasts! Jesus would always correct them. Jesus would always go against the status quo, and he would reach out and minister to those who had special needs. There is a verse in the Bible that I ve read and you ve read, and it just caught me between the eyes this week. I thought Man-o-man! When I read that and really caught a hold of it, I thought, Boy, have I dropped the ball on this one! And I bet you have too. Luke 14:12, it says, Jesus had just finished dining at the home of a prominent Pharisee, and he said, When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends. I want to say this: this verb, do not invite, meant do not invite-to the exclusion of others, or do not only invite. Jesus isn t saying here, When you throw a party, don t ever invite your family; don t ever invite friends. He s not saying that s bad or wrong. What he s trying to admonish us is don t only, always, and forever invite only family and friends. Invite your brothers or sisters, or relatives, or rich neighbors. If you do, they may invite you back, and so you ll be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you ll be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the Resurrection of the Righteous. And usually when you read that, you say, Wasn t that kind of cute, kind of nice? But did he really mean it? Did he really mean for the church to get strategic and go out of our way to invite people with special needs into our lives, into our homes? I think he did. I think he did because it s in the imperative tense, which is a command tense, present and active-meaning now. Be strategic. When was the last time some people with economic concerns were invited into your home for a meal? Or somebody with other special needs that you reached out to strategically and invited them in and built a friendship with them. I will tell you something: I read this and I went, I have dropped the ball. And I bet you if we took a raise of hands this morning, a lot of hands would go up and say, I dropped the ball. We want to change that as a body and as a church. We believe God has some good things for our church to do, and we re going to start with Special Touch Ministries and the ministry of Pastor Brad. Brad has been a friend of mine for years, as well as Pastor Sean. I was helping him as his proctor when he was studying for the ministry, and what he has done is prepared a message to us about what the body of Christ is to be about. What we will be doing while Brad is reading his text, is reading it off the screen. If for some reason you have problems reading from the screen, feel free to move up toward the front. Most of you should be able to see the words. The font is big enough so that you can read along with what he has to share. Lets welcome Pastor Brad to our church this morning.
