Community activist Dr. Cal Williams was born on November 30, 1941, in Monroe, Louisiana. A college graduate, Williams served in the United States Air Force during the early 1960s and participated in the Civil Rights Movement through his affiliation with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). In 1965, following the advice of Charles and John LeViege, two high school friends who were enrolled at Alaska Methodist University (now Alaska Pacific University), Williams came to Anchorage seeking a change. .Over the next 60 years, Williams worked at Providence Alaska Medical Center as a dishwasher (aka director of pots and pans), then as a nursing assistant at the Alaska Psychiatric Institute,  and eventually landed a role in communications for Alaska Housing Finance Corporation until his retirement.Williams served as president of the Alaska chapter of the NAACP from 1968 to 1970. During that time, he partnered with Alaska Native leadership to lobby for the landmark Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. Williams was honored by the Anchorage Municipal Assembly for his contributions to the growth and strength to the State of Alaska. In 2017, Williams was the recipient of the St. Francis of Assisi Award. Williams has served as Grand Knight of the Council of Knights of Columbus at St. Patrick's Church in Anchorage, as well as in 2018, he served as the District 22 chair for the Alaska Democratic Party.More recently, Williams collaborated with UAA associate professor of history Ian Hartman, Ph.D., and David Reamer in the writing of Black Lives in Alaska: A History of African Americans in the Far Northwest. Together, they have done presentations, book signings, museum exhibitions and archive curations. For his invaluable contributions, UAA awarded Williams an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in fall 2022. The 400 years of African American History Commission, a federally appointed committee established in 2019 with the goal of rediscovering the 400 years of history since Africans were first brought to English colonies in 1619, recognized Cal Williams during Juneteenth 2024 as one of America's 400 African American History Keepers.

In this week's episode, we are speaking with Dr. David Scheel, behavioural ecologist and professor of marine biology at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage, Alaska. David takes us into the wild and wonderful world of octopuses and we get a glimpse into the mysteries they hold. We also dive into his new book  Many Things Under A Rock: The Mysteries of Octopuses where David takes us around the world and into the very dens of these extraordinary animals.  As exotic as octopuses are, their behaviour can feel…relatable. But throughout history western culture has in some cases almost demonised them, missing so much of what makes them so intriguing; their intelligence, incredible sensory abilities, physiology, and maybe the most interesting thing about them, their daily lives.  Thanks so much to David for introducing us to the beautiful, intelligent, dynamic, miraculous, and quite sensible, Octopus. An animal that no doubt has a very real sense of humour.  And maybe most importantly we put to rest the debate of “octopuses” or “octopi.” You're welcome. And you're right! Lots of Love. Both are professors at Alaska Pacific University; Lee teaches philosophy while Dial has zeroed in on math and biology.  Lee has been featured on the podcast before. This is Dial's first go.  If you've done some basic research into Alaskan wilderness adventures, you're likely to have come across Dial's exploits. Dial remains a proto early-adopter considering how one pieces together moving from A to B to C when it entails the encyclopedia of groveling through Alaska's tangle of botany and mountains and hydrology. From packrafting to cycling, skiing, and skating (on ice skates) Dial imagined and realized moving across landscapes, sometimes elegantly, often bedraggled, and just in the knick of time. I learned on fastestknowntime.com that he stamps his performance metrics as OKTs (only known time) and LKTs (loneliest known time). The link above also includes Dial's adventure CV and does not include his voluminous academic work.  Dial is also a National Geographic Explorer and the author of The Adventurer's Son.   On episode 99 of Totally Deep, Dial and Lee discuss researching the natural world on skis, gear revelations, and finding a shared passion for sliding on snow More info about TDP at Totally Deep Podcast Blog on Cripplecreekbc.com or wildsnow.com. The octopus has always been the stuff of spine-tingling legend, like that of the kraken, the many-armed sea monster believed to drag ships to the bottom of the sea after dining on the crew. Or Gertie the Pus, the giant Pacific octopus that lives under the Narrows Bridge connecting Tacoma, Washington, to Gig Harbor. In reality, the octopus is more benign but equally fascinating. Did you know the octopus has two-thirds of its brain neurons distributed throughout its eight arms? Or that the severed arm of an octopus can walk independently toward a food source and move it to where its mouth should be? The octopus was the only invertebrate included in The Cambridge Decision of Consciousness, a 2012 declaration by scientists expressing consensus on animal consciousness. But what does consciousness mean in an octopus and how does it drive the relationships Sy Montgomery and Dr. David Schell have with these alien beings? Scientists wonder if humans can even begin to understand the intellect and mystery of the octopus. So, should we be eating octopus? GUESTS: Sy Montgomery - The author of nearly 20 books for adults and children, including The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness David Scheel - A marine biologist and behavioral ecologist at Alaska Pacific University; he has a forthcoming book on the behavioral ecology of marine animals Silvia Killingsworth - Managing editor at The New Yorker Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter. She has dedicated her 30 year career to serving this underserved population. Dr. Romero received her B.S. in Sociology from San Diego State University, and her Masters and Doctorate degrees from Alaska Pacific University. In addition to this research, and from her experiences working with and supervising many clinicians over the years, she knew the training was sparse – especially in Alaska. As part of her dissertation, she developed an in depth training curriculum for clinicians who would be willing, and interested in serving this population. She has since utilized this training to assist clinicians, through a variety of venues, gain the skills needed to effectively provide behavioral health services to individuals who experience I/DDs.Dr. Romero is a life-long Alaskan, who enjoys spending time with family and friends; fishing, camping, hiking, playing softball – generally most things in the great outdoors.Laronsia ‘Ronnie’ ReynoldsRonnie was born in Florida and relocated to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1982. As an American who calls England home (long story), Caitlin has lived on 3 continents and travelled to 35 countries, and considers herself a bit of a nomad. When a friend from "home" told her she was an Alaska girl at heart, she decided to find out for herself and shortly after finishing her Master's in College Student Services Administration, she accepted a position as a Resident Director at UAF, where she met her husband, Cameron Poindexter. This past summer, Caitlin was hired as the Early Honors & First Year Advisor at Alaska Pacific University, where she works with students and colleagues who inspire her, surrounded by the serenity of mountains and woods. In her spare time, Caitlin likes to dog mush, clean, and sing (seriously), edit papers and people watch at airports.

Happy Valentine's Day week! To celebrate the love, we're hosting a discussion about sex and romance after kids. Feeling exhausted, being too busy with work, caring for children, keeping non-stop schedules throughout the week or just feeling like the caregiver with little left to give at the end of the day - these are all real romance roadblocks that can keep moms and dads from being lovers. So, this week we're offering some practical advice, empathetic experience and a sexy recipe to heat things up. IN-STUDIO GUESTS: Joining host Shana Sheehy in the studio to discuss the issues that can keep couples from experiencing intimacy and how to reconnect are two guests who regularly counsel on this subject: Chris Reynolds is a licensed professional counselor with a master's degree in counseling psychology from Alaska Pacific University. He's in private practice in Anchorage where he specializes in the areas of adjustment, couple's therapy and sex therapy. He has postgraduate training in the area of human sexuality and is one of two certified sex therapists in Alaska. (Chris originally guested on KTD on Show 48: The Sex Talk). Rebecca Love is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in working with sexuality and couple's and women's mental health issues.
