Be Prepared for Medical Emergencies When Fly Fishing, with Mike Tayloe

The Orvis Fly Fishing Guide Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2025 80:17

My guest this week is Mike Tayloe [33:07], who is a fishing guide, EMT, and wilderness medicine trainer. Tayloe (he prefers this to Mike) has trained many Orvis-endorsed guides and lodges on emergencies that you'll encounter on the water. Basically, they're the same emergencies you'll find at home but without the ability to get a rescue squad or ambulance quickly. The bad news is that we can't give you training on wilderness medicine on a podcast. The good news is that Tayloe will tell us how to get training for these emergencies (an online course is not the recommended way to go) and how to put together your own first aid kit so that you are prepared to deal with common medical problems. He goes into great detail on what to include in your kit, and recommends places to either get a complete pre-made kit or where to buy the right components—and the best course is not to buy a cheap kit in a big box store. This podcast, with proper training and a good kit, could save your life or that of a fishing buddy.   In the Fly Box this week, we have a number of questions that may answer questions you have had, such as: When should I use split shot as an "in-line" rig as opposed to the drop shot method? Is it better to use fewer big split shot or a number of smaller ones? What can I do with egg yarn other than make egg flies? Mayfly nymphs look flat.  Why don't we use more flies with a flattened shape? Should I cast my streamers upstream, across-stream, or quartering down and swinging? Where should I look for striped bass along a marshy shoreline? How important is color on emerger flies.  Most of the patterns I see imitate the color of the duns but shouldn't we be more concerned with the color of the nymph? Why are high-end fly rods more expensive than high-end conventional rods? When tying flies, should I tie every size in the right range or should I skip sizes?

Join Host Lyle Perez for a chilling finale to the Haunted America series as he explores the haunted history of Washington, D.C., on Halloween night. As the center of political power, the nation's capital holds layers of dark secrets, historic tragedies, and spectral presences. From the halls of the White House to the eerie streets of Lafayette Square, D.C. is alive with ghostly tales that reveal a side of history rarely discussed. Grab a warm drink, dim the lights, and get ready for a journey into the capital's haunted sites. Featured Locations: The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20500 Home to more than just presidents, the White House hosts famous spirits like Abraham Lincoln, who's been seen by countless staff and guests. Queen Wilhelmina even fainted upon seeing his apparition. Dolley Madison is rumored to protect the Rose Garden, while Abigail Adams' ghost has been seen in the East Room. Public tours offer a glimpse into the residence, though ghostly encounters are never guaranteed. The Octagon House 1799 New York Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20006 This unique mansion, built in 1801, is haunted by the spirits of two Tayloe daughters who fell to their deaths in the staircase. Visitors report hearing footsteps, doors slamming, and feeling watched, especially in the ballroom. The house is open as a museum, inviting visitors to learn about its tragic history. The Capitol Building First St SE, Washington, D.C. 20004 The U.S. Capitol is haunted by the mysterious “Demon Cat,” a ghostly omen of disaster, and by John Quincy Adams, who collapsed and died in the building. Cold spots, whispers, and eerie figures are common, particularly in the rotunda. Guided tours provide access to this historical—and haunted—monument. Lafayette Square Across from the White House, Lafayette Square's dark past is marked by murder and scandal. The ghost of Philip Barton Key II, murdered by Congressman Daniel Sickles, is said to roam here. Shadowy figures and phantom gunshots disturb this otherwise serene park, making it a must-visit for thrill-seekers. The Old Stone House 3051 M St NW, Washington, D.C. 20007 Dating back to 1765, the Old Stone House is D.C.'s oldest unchanged structure. It's haunted by “George,” a spectral carpenter, and a child who tugs at visitors' clothing. Guests report feeling cold hands and hearing whispers, adding to its allure as a museum with deep-rooted mysteries. The National Theatre 1321 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20004 Known as “The Theatre of Presidents,” the National Theatre is haunted by the “Lady in White,” seen backstage and in the audience. Disembodied laughter and footsteps heighten its ghostly charm. Patrons attending performances may find themselves in the presence of D.C.'s most dedicated spectral audience. The Exorcist Steps, Georgetown 36th St NW & Prospect St NW, Washington, D.C. 20007 Made famous by The Exorcist, these narrow steps hold an ominous presence. Many report feeling watched or hearing footsteps echoing behind them, especially at night. It's a notorious location for those seeking real-life frights in the heart of Georgetown. The Hay-Adams Hotel 800 16th St NW, Washington, D.C. 20006 Overlooking Lafayette Square, the Hay-Adams Hotel is haunted by the spirit of Clover Adams, whose presence is felt through cold spots, flickering lights, and the scent of lavender. The fourth floor is particularly active, drawing guests who hope for a ghostly encounter during their stay. The Smithsonian Castle 1000 Jefferson Dr SW, Washington, D.C. 20560 James Smithson, the Smithsonian's founder, is said to haunt this Gothic structure. His spirit has been seen in the hallways, with footsteps and ghostly whispers adding to the building's aura. Visitors can explore the castle's history and perhaps feel Smithson's presence watching over his legacy. The Congressional Cemetery 1801 E St SE, Washington, D.C. 20003 This historic cemetery is home to prominent figures, and visitors often report eerie encounters, including the spirit of Clara Barton. Ghost tours reveal the haunted side of this iconic cemetery, with flickering lights and murmurs from beyond. This week's episode features a conversation from the summer of 2020 between me and with Bo Tayloe. We were both invited down to Menokin by the Menokin Foundation and interviewed by Michael Beller as part of the Foundation's series "In the Glass with Menokin". This series sought to bring together individuals for thought provoking conversations about their lived experiences and shared connections to Menokin's past, present, and future. Menokin was home to one of the Virginia signers of the Declaration of Independence, Francis Lightfoot Lee, his wife, Rebecca Tayloe, and various enslaved people. Bo Tayloe and I met for the first time about 15 minutes before the record button was pressed so what you'll hear is us getting to know each other and sharing our perspectives on the site: me as someone who's ancestors would have been enslaved and him as someone who's ancestors would have done the enslaving. It was an interesting day and talking with Bo was a highlight of my summer that year. Why is eating healthy so confusing? Many times we don't know where to start or if we do start and pick a plan, we are then told this way of eating is out and some new diet is best. Wading through the mountain of information online leads to even more confusion as we find ourselves asking: is gluten bad, what kind of dairy is good for you, what's the deal with natural or unrefined sugars? In this episode, Seth is joined by Taylor Morgan to discuss what functional nutrition is and how to use it to bring clarity to your food choices. Taylor is a certified physician's assistant who also has her bachelor's degree in nutritional science. She discovered her passion for functional medicine at the beginning of her dietetics career, after using a functional approach to overcome hormonal imbalances, digestive complications, and thyroid issues. Taylor describes herself as a lifelong learner and is dedicated to staying up to date with the latest evidence-based research in order to provide the best possible care for her patients. She has completed coursework through the University of Arizona and the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. She is an integrative and functional nutrition certified practitioner (IFNMT) and is currently undergoing certification to become an Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) certified practitioner. Taylor currently practices in Fort Worth, Texas at Taylor Dukes Wellness In this episode, Seth and Taylor discuss: How Taylor used diet and nutrition to treat her digestive issues How to use food as medicine Why what is optimal for your body right now and what's optimal for your body long term can be two different things How functional nutrition plans are individualized and personalized Why it is important to keep your stress levels low when it comes to following a food plan What is blood sugar dysregulation and what are the long-term effects of uncontrolled insulin levels? Where to find hidden sugar on processed food labels How cocaine and sugar are similar Who should avoid gluten? Tips for ordering gluten-free at a restaurant How dairy impacts autoimmune diseases Why food sensitivities can create a delayed inflammatory response Taylor's health tip: The first thing you should drink in the morning is water.  Staying hydrated throughout the day is essential to great health. Below are a few quotes we discuss, which were pulled from Stephen Covey's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. hope ya dig this episode! “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” "The key to life is not accumulation, it's contribution." Nellie Tayloe Ross: America's First Female Governor

On this date in 1925, Nellie Tayloe Ross was sworn in as governor of Wyoming. Here are some things you may not have known about the first woman to serve as governor in the United States. Nellie Tayloe was born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1876. She graduated from high school in Kansas and became a kindergarten teacher for four years. While visiting relatives in Tennessee, Tayloe met William Bradford Ross, a lawyer whom she married in 1902. Soon after, they moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where William became a leader in the state’s Democratic Party. In 1922, William Ross was elected governor, after running as a progressive. He served less than two years before dying of complications from an appendectomy. Nellie Ross was nominated to run to replace her husband in a special election the following month. She won easily, making history as the first female governor in the United States. She, like her husband, was a strong advocate for the prohibition of alcohol. That support for prohibition, along with her refusal to campaign for herself, resulted in a narrow defeat in her 1926 reelection attempt. Ross remained active in the Democratic Party and received 31 votes for vice president at the party’s 1928 convention. She then served as vice president of the Democratic National Committee. In 1933, Ross was appointed director of the U.S. Mint. During her time at the Mint, she oversaw the design and release of the Franklin Half Dollar and the public sale of proof coins. She also oversaw the establishment of the U.S. Bullion Depository at Fort Knox, Kentucky. She served five terms as Mint director and retired in 1953. In her retirement, Ross wrote for several women’s magazines and traveled the world. When she died in 1977 at the age of 101, she was the oldest ex-governor in U.S. History. Our question: Who holds the title of longest-lived former U.S. governor?   Today is unofficially National Bird Day and National Whipped Cream Day. It’s the birthday of actor Robert Duvall, who is 86; actress Diane Keaton, who is 71; and actor Bradley Cooper, who is 42. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1962, the top song in the U.S. was “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Tokens. The No. 1 movie was “El Cid,” while the novel “Franny and Zooey” by J.D. Salinger topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. Now for our weekly question: What scientist and inventor was Thomas Edison’s main rival in the War of Currents? Submit your answer at triviapeople.com/test and we’ll add the name of the person with the first correct answer to our winner’s wall … at triviapeople.com. We'll reveal the correct answer on tomorrow’s episode.   Links Follow us on Twitter, Facebook or our website. Tayloe gave Lee a life interest in 1,000 acres of his vast Richmond County estate and, as a wedding present, built the plantation house and surrounding structures.
