In this episode, James Gurd interviews experienced digital marketing strategist Anna Wilson about the role of offline media in ecommerce. Anna explains the rise of the fractional CMO role, the changing role of offline media in the digital age, and the appeal of direct mail in a crowded digital space. The podcast will help you understand the relevance of print formats for different audiences, the importance of personalisation in retention strategies, and the measurement of offline marketing success. We also touch on the role of programmatic direct mail and the challenges and considerations of sustainability in print campaigns. Key takeaways: The fractional CMO role has become increasingly popular, especially in the ecommerce space. Offline media, such as direct mail, is gaining attention and becoming more relevant in the crowded digital marketing landscape. Direct mail offers a unique opportunity to stand out and engage with customers in a tangible way. Personalisation is key in both acquisition and retention strategies, and direct mail can be tailored to specific audiences and demographics. Measuring the success of offline marketing campaigns is relatively straightforward, as it involves tracking responses and analysing the impact on sales and profitability. Programmatic direct mail is an emerging trend that combines the benefits of automation and personalisation in offline marketing. Sustainability is an important consideration in print campaigns, and there are options for offsetting the environmental impact of direct mail.

Anna shares her journey from a career in academia to becoming a successful artist and shares all the lessons she has learned along the way to help you take the next step in your artistic journey.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Anna talks about her journey to becoming an artist. Despite a career in academia, Anna continued to draw as a hobby. When her husband changed jobs this presented Anna with the opportunity to take a look at her career and she took the leap to becoming an artist.  When Anna decided to pursue art as a career she had to retrain from scratch. She talks about the steps she took and some of the courses and skills she learned that helped her along the way. Anna's first big step towards success came when she decided to let go of some of the bad habits she had picked up as a hobbyist. Once she embraced change, she received her first commission which led to her finding an agent. Anna talks about how much she has learned from drawing books as opposed to single pieces of art and shares her knowledge on how you can create better images that will flow as a story.  BEST MOMENTS“Life is too short to not do the thing you really want to do.”“You can't take success for granted. One out of five children in the US suffers chronic pain. From the prick of a vaccine to stomach pain, headaches, and chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia, children's pain is being undertreated. Today Tami is joined by Dr. Anna Wilson and Rachel Rabkin Peachman to discuss the research on pediatric pain and simple ways you can help children manage their pain. Anna and Rachel are the authors of When Children Feel Pain: From Everyday Aches to Chronic Conditions, a powerful book that covers a wide range of pain-related topics in children. In this conversation, Tami, Rachel, and Anna discuss why Rachel and Anna became interested in researching children's pain, how they first found each other and connected over their overlapping pursuits, limitations of the ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) framework, the increasing cultural awareness of the impact of medical trauma, what research shows about non-verbal signs of pain in babies and infants, the problem with clinicians relying on physiological pain symptoms alone, shocking statistics on the number of children having chronic pain, how Anna and Rachel are hoping to improve the long-term outcomes for children feeling pain, the horrifying stories of babies in recent history getting surgery without anesthesia, how long it takes for breakthroughs in research to move into practice, teaching kids the tools to cope with pain through needle pricks, Tami's insights from the way her body reacted to the traumatic stories shared in When Children Feel Pain, what research shows about babies' bodies storing the memories of painful events, the non-genetic connection between kids and parents with chronic pain, how parents can create empowering messaging around pain for their children, why coaching is so helpful for navigating these situations, resources for parents with kids dealing with pain, why it's crucial to manage your child's pain, the issue of diagnostic uncertainty, tools parents can use, Rachel and Anna's messages of hope for parents and children living with chronic pain, and more. As someone who felt alone as a child in pain, Tami believes anyone who influences young lives can benefit from reading the book. While it's a hard truth to read in places, it's also full of hope and offers practical suggestions for what we can do to change the future.  Each exposure to pain builds on the last, and it's never too late to course-correct.     Note: This episode is not meant to be medical advice. As writers, there may be times when we must delve deep into the harder ‘themes' of life - that of grief and loss. How might we start to write about loss and in what medium - a blog? Or a book? And where do we begin? How can we be vulnerable on the page? Join our conversation with Anna Wilson, as we talk about the craft of writing memoirs, having the confidence to tell the truth, and the mindset that has enabled her to write 50+ books. *Anna Wilson is the author of over 50 books for children and young teens. In this episode, I speak with urban-sketcher and illustrator Anna Wilson. Anna is what I describe as a 'deliberate artist', in that she has taken strong decisions to change her career trajectory towards art and illustration. I am always interested in speaking to 'deliberate artists', because they have such motivated and well-considered reasons for the things they do. What does a path of self-education in art look like? How do they gather influences, images, and inspirations, to guide this path? Anna tells me about the role that travel plays in shaping her perspectives, the lessons she picks from photography and carrying a little sketchbook, and what she carries from her formal education in human geography. Check out Anna's work. To support this show, read my email newsletter, or follow me on social media, visit here.

Peter arrives in the twentieth century, during the last years of the Great War, to a pandemic which you may have read a lot about during the early coverage of our current COVID-19 outbreak. After the Black Death, the so-called ‘Spanish’ Flu has one of the most famous monikers of any pandemic, but does it deserve such notoriety?   This episode is part of our History of Pandemics season - follow Professor Peter Millican as he talks to researchers from around the world about some of the devastating pandemics humanity has experienced. Peter and his colleagues will discuss ten major outbreaks: from the Plague of Athens to the West African Ebola outbreak, via the Black Death, Smallpox and Cholera, and ask how these outbreaks have shaped society, what we may be able to learn from them today, and where we might be heading? It either deserves its place as the seventh pandemic we’re covering in the series, or it’s the pandemic that never was, an outlier in our historical narrative…   This episode is part of our History of Pandemics season - follow Professor Peter Millican as he talks to researchers from around the world about some of the devastating pandemics humanity has experienced. It is how we react and how we listen. Its about spontaneity, how we respond in the moment. [3:27] Improv skills are life skills. As children we just want to play, kids don’t have the constraints we put on ourselves as adults. Fear of punishment shuts down playfulness and creativity. [5:39] 'Mistakes are just a new way of doing things' - Jill BernardClick To Tweet [7:55] How Anna came to improv. Discovered it's not about being funny and witty but about being supportive of your partner on stage. [11:34] Team building days usually mean being sent to a competitive environment or activity - not necessarily the right approach to build a strong collaborative team. An effective team is people working together. [17:37] As a techie, Anna came from a “no but” approach to working on ideas but through improv has changed to a "yes and" approach. You build on ideas rather than tearing them down. [22:41] 'The edge of your comfort zone is where the magic happens when it comes to learning'Click To Tweet [28:04] Within the corporate environment, improv is a tool to help you achieve what you want. Used in sales training, for communication skills, negotiation and conflict resolution. [37:53] Mindfulness through improv as an alternative to sitting in a quiet room, breathing in and out. [43:29] Improv teaches you to care less about what you think other people think of you [44:14] Neil on confidence when speaking in public: Perception is reality, fake it til you make it and over time you will turn it into real confidence [47:50] Neil and Anna's top 5 tips on public speaking and presentations: Your audience is already on your side. You’re already the expert Find what you're passionate about in your topic. That is what will sell it to your audience and make it engaging Understand what the audience needs If you're having fun, your audience will have fun [56:00] Neil's biggest tip: Do something that scares you every day!Click To Tweet [57:19] Anna's biggest tip: If you want to do it, you have to do it!Click To Tweet   Links to things mentioned lowerthetone.com @improvneil Speechless Live @yesitsanna Zenprov

From the creator of the ITV Sunday night drama, VICTORIA, comes the exclusive standalone novel by Daisy Goodwin, author of the bestselling MY LAST DUCHESS and THE FORTUNE HUNTER. Perfect for fans of epics such as War and Peace, Poldark or Granchester In June 1837, the eighteen-year-old Victoria wakes up to find that she is Queen of the most powerful nation in the world. But will she be queen in her own right, or a puppet controlled by her mother and the sinister Sir John Conroy? Can this tiny girl prevail against the men who believe that women are too hysterical to rule? Everyone wants her to get married, but Victoria has no intention of entering into a marriage of convenience with her cousin Albert, a shy bookworm who didn't know how to dance the last time she met him. She would much rather reign alone with a little help from her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. He may be old enough to be her father, but he is the only man who believes that she will be a great Queen, and he knows how to make her laugh. A husband would only get in the way...
