AmericanaFest Showcase artist Cris Jacobs joins us on the show to talk about his recently released album, “One of These Days,” and how making it was like returning home. We chat about embracing the good and bad of the songwriting process and learning to be comfortable with imperfection.    Cris Jacobs lost his way. Most of us do. Part of the story is in those lost days. But more of the story is in what we find again.   For Jacobs, the last several years have been hard—and transformative. With a vote of confidence from a legend, a no. 2 pencil and scratchpad, and his acoustic guitar, he went into his barn to write and emerged with his finest album to date.  Produced by Jerry Douglas, “One of These Days” is a stunning collection of storytelling and song, rooted in bluegrass, folk and blues, but unencumbered by rules and expectations. The Infamous Stringdusters serve as the album's rollicking house band, joined by friends including Billy Strings, Sam Bush, Lee Ann Womack, the McCrary Sisters, Lindsay Lou and more. The result is unfettered, joyful virtuosity, swirling around Jacobs' powerful voice, gut-check meditations, and close-up character sketches.     See Cris at AmericanaFest:   Wednesday, September 18th a the AmericanaFest DayStage presented by NPR Music, World Café and WMOT  Friday, September 20th at his official showcaseat 11:00 PM    And check him out here:  Website: Crisjacobs.com  Instagram: Cris_jacobs  Facebook: Cris Jacobs  YouTube: @crisjacobs6183

Colin's 21st album is called Chasing the Sun.   Today,   Aug 17 is his Birthday. Happy Day Colin     Co-produced by Colin Linden in his Pinhead Studios in Nashville. Colin's coming to the  Mulligan Stew Podcast with the complete story of how he and his friends wrote and created these outstanding songs.   Colin singing a Lucinda Williams song, Protection, with Lucinda in the studio doing harmony. Two tracks with blues harp legend Charlie Musselwhite, co-writing memorable songs with Tom Wilson, Terra Lightfoot, Thompson Wilson, Jesse Obrien and others. A great rhythm section of Darryl Jones (Stones) Charley Drayton (Keith Richards). A splendid cover of Paul Butterfield's classic  In My Own Dream. Also vocals by  The McCrary Sisters and Ruby Amanfu Colin Linden leading the all-star band and co-writing with Colin James. It's their 6th album together. Colin and I have been doing interviews for a long time but there are still events and moments in his life that need retelling. For example, when the two Colins'  met on the Canadian Prairies Colin James was 13 and Colin Linden was 17. Both were into playing the blues. A short time later Colin, still a teenager, got to play for Stevie Ray Vaughn. Stevie helped him take the next steps in his career. This is the complete Interview.  His 2021 album Open Road won the JUNO Award for Best Blues Album and was nominated for Blues Foundation Best Blues Rock Album in 2023. Catching the Sun may very well get the best reception yet.

They have released four studio albums and one live album: Our Journey (2010), All the Way (2013), Let's Go (2015), Live (2017) and A Very McCrary Christmas (2019).The McCrary Sisters are the daughters of a former Baptist preacher, Reverend Samuel H. They are old school but can be new school too. They can sing with and without music. One of the songs that I love to hear the McCrary Sisters sing is “Hold On” from their 2015 album “Let's Go”. The son of a preacher man, Mississippi-raised Thorn spent much of his childhood in church, participating in multiple weekly services with his father as well as at neighboring African American congregations, where he became entranced with the music whose infectious spirit is captured on the new album.Don't Let the Devil Ride collects soulful songs originally cut by black southern gospel groups and features guests the Blind Boys of Alabama, The McCrary Sisters, the Preservation Hall Jazz Horns, and Bonnie Bishop. The album was recorded at three temples of sound: the Sam C. Phillips Recording studio, whose namesake gave another son of Tupelo his start; at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, where Thorn worked as a songwriter for legendary producer Rick Hall early in his career; and at Preservation Hall, where horn players from the celebrated jazz venue lent songs a New Orleans vibe. The new release marks Thorn's first time recording gospel music after a dozen albums in roots-rock mode, though his upbringing has previously been reflected in his creation of a body of strikingly original songs. In his own songwriting, Thorn often addresses the foibles of human relationships, although he doesn't favor the sacred over the profane. As an accomplished painter, former professional boxer, and seasoned skydiver, Thorn has never shied away from new challenges, but cutting a gospel record was just like going home.Thorn's father Wayne was a bishop in the Church of God of Prophecy, a Pentecostal denomination, and Thorn was just three when he began singing and playing tambourine at services. Congregational participation was valued more than skilled soloists, and Thorn also found a showcase for his talents at Saturday night "singings."But his most memorable musical experiences were at an African American branch of his father's church, the Okolona Sunrise Church of Prophecy. "There might be ten people playing the tambourine, but the rhythm was locked in, and they'd let me play bass. I loved the Appalachian gospel of my parents' church, but it was a treat to play with those musicians. They worshiped in a different way and the music was different, and I feel blessed to have been in that church setting."The sermons in Church of God of Prophecy churches warned sinners of fire and brimstone and it wasn't uncommon for congregants for congregants to speak in tongues. But the lasting legacy for Thorn wasn't a strong sense of guilt as it was for many others who grew up in Pentecostal churches. "I think that they use guilt to intimidate you, but I don't buy into that anymore. There ain't no love in that."Instead he continues to be inspired by the strong sense of communion that was fostered by musical fellowship. "One of things that I take a lot of pride in is that I love everybody, and what I learned in church paid dividends. When I'm up there entertaining it's also a glimpse of what my life has been and how gospel music has molded me into who I am."Thorn's parents wouldn't allow him listen to secular music at home (in his teens, he had to hide his only two LPs - Elton John and Huey Lewis - from his father), so he listened at friends' houses to Kiss, Peter Frampton, and the bawdy "chitlin' circuit" comedy albums that he credits with inspiring the dark sense of humor that pervades his lyrics. But gospel music remains Thorn's most abiding musical touchstone, the sound that first stirred his soul.He was just 14 when sometime gospel artist Elvis Presley died - "The world stood still in Tupelo," he recalls - and while the King's records weren't a major influence, Thorn emphasizes the similarity of their early experiences."Elvis literally went to a lot of the same churches I did. It's almost identical how we started. When they filmed him from the waist up it wasn't vulgar, it was the moves he learned in church, dancing in the   Read more at www.paulthorn.com

Boxing career highlights include winning the Mid-South Middleweight Championship in Memphis, Tennessee and culminated with a nationally televised bout with former world champion Roberto Durán,[1] After a few years of working in a Tupelo furniture factory and playing in local clubs he was discovered by music professional Miles Copeland (brother of The Police drummer Stewart Copeland). In 1997, while performing at a singer-songwriters night at a local pizza shop (Vanelli's), Roger Sovine representing BMI overheard Thorn and was impressed with his singing and song writing ability. He asked Thorn if he had his permission to share his name with other record companies in Nashville. A couple weeks later, Thorn called vOz Vanelli (owner of Vanelli's) and mentioned that several record companies were coming to Tupelo to hear him perform. Thorn asked if he could come and play at Vanelli's which vOz agreed to. After hearing Thorn perform, Wyatt Easterling (an associate of Miles Copeland III) brought Thorn to Nashville and within thirty days, Thorn opened for Sting. Thorn was subsequently signed to a recording contract with A&M Records and recorded his first album, Hammer & Nail, in 1997. He left A&M soon after and followed Hammer & Nail with thirteen more albums, all self-released and self-produced with his writing and production partner, Billy Maddox.Thorn's 2010 album Pimps and Preachers debuted at No. 83 on the Billboard 200 chart, his highest chart position to date. His 2012 album What the Hell Is Going On was the 12th Most Played Album of 2012 on the Americana Music Association Year-End Chart. What the Hell Is Going On was Thorn's first album to feature the songwriting of other artists and the second record of his to debut on the Billboard Top 100 during its first week of release.Thorn has toured as an opening act for Huey Lewis & the News, Sting, John Prine, Marianne Faithfull, Mark Knopfler, Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Jeff Walker, Toby Keith and Jeff Beck.In 2014, Thorn released Too Blessed to Be Stressed, which he described as a collection of "positive anthem songs. I wrote these songs hoping they might put people in a positive mindset and encourage them to count their own blessings, like I count mine," Thorn observes. "There's no higher goal I could set for myself than to help other people find some happiness and gratitude in their lives. In March 2018, Thorn released an album, titled Don't Let the Devil Ride, featuring several covers of gospel songs that were inspiration to him during his youth and adolescence. The album features several prominent artists in that genre such as the Blind Boys of Alabama, The McCrary Sisters, Bonnie Bishop, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The album peaked at No. 1 in the Billboard Blues Albums Chart.Later that month, the Mississippi House of Representatives named March 27 'Paul Thorn Day' in recognition of Paul's constant support of his home state. On May 7, 2018, Mississippi Public Broadcasting premiered a special featuring Paul's current tour titled "Mission Temple Fireworks Revival, which features special guests such as the Blind Boys of Alabama, The McCrary Sisters, Bonnie Bishop, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.In 2019, Paul Thorn's lead electric guitarist of 30 years, Bill Hinds, parted ways with the band. In a statement on Paul's website, Hinds explains that he is starting a new chapter in his life but will remain a musician. Bill's spot in the Paul Thorn Band has been filled by Chris Simmons, a guitarist from Alabama, who played in Leon Russell's band for 5 years. In May of 2020, multi-Grammy award winning vocalist and pianist Diane Schuur released an album featuring a cover of Thorn's “Everybody Looks Good at the Starting Line.

"This is the culmination of my whole life in music, coming back to my gospel roots," says Paul Thorn about his newest album, Don't Let the Devil Ride. "My message on this record is 'let's get together' - I want to help lighten your load and make you smile."The son of a preacher man, Mississippi-raised Thorn spent much of his childhood in church, participating in multiple weekly services with his father as well as at neighboring African American congregations, where he became entranced with the music whose infectious spirit is captured on the new album.Don't Let the Devil Ride collects soulful songs originally cut by black southern gospel groups and features guests the Blind Boys of Alabama, The McCrary Sisters, the Preservation Hall Jazz Horns, and Bonnie Bishop. But gospel music remains Thorn's most abiding musical touchstone, the sound that first stirred his soul. just 14 when sometime gospel artist Elvis Presley died - "The world stood still in Tupelo," he recalls - and while the King's records weren't a major influence,

Derrek Phillips grew up in the bay area of San Francisco, CA, in a home filled with music of all genres. Some of his earliest memories are playing percussion on whatever pot or pan he found in the kitchen to the records of Sly and the Family Stone, Metallica, and Digital Underground.  Derrek met his wife at a local bay-area high school band competition while she was playing trombone. His interest in playing all types of percussion allowed him to play in community orchestras, drum and bugle corps, including studying with the late, great, jazz drummer, Tony Williams.  His love for music took him east, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from William Patterson University in New Jersey. After years of honing his skills in and around the New York jazz scene, Derrek's dreams of continuing his professional music career led him to Nashville. He has played and toured with such acts as Bonnie Tyler, Dr. John, Alison Kraus, James Otto, Delbert McClinton, Charlie Hunter, The McCrary Sisters, and many others.  A two-time Grammy winner, his percussion skills can be heard on the "Nashville" TV show, along with soundtracks by Vanessa Williams and Michael McDonald.  In 2014, Derrek joined Hank Williams Jr.'s band and he currently plays and tours with country music sensation Brett Eldredge. Derrek and I sat down one sunny summer day in 2020 on the porch of Moo Country in Leiper's Fork, TN. We discussed the influence his parents had on encouraging his musical ability and how the coronavirus pandemic is impacting professional tour musicians.  He's endorsed by Pearl Drums, Istanbul Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Alclair Audio ear monitors, Drum Dots, Stack Ring Percussion, and Vater Sticks. Life rarely follows one path so directly. Nashville-based guitar maestro Phil Hughley knows this fact intimately; during his childhood in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Hughley saw Eric Clapton perform on television, and he fell in love with the guitar. It changed his life. He spent his adolescence learning everything he could musically, studying guitar and learning how to bend it to his will. While music embedded itself in his soul, Hughley’s path lead him away from his true passion and to The United States Military Academy—until one fateful night while on patrol. Hughley had a vision—his fourteen-year-old self stood before him, and reminded him that music was his true calling. He left West Point to attend Cleveland State University in Ohio, and returned to the arts. In 2007, Hughley moved to Nashville to pursue his dream and became a go-to session player and perennial sideman, in studios and on stages across the country with the likes of CeCe Winans, TajMo (the collaborative venture of Keb’ Mo’ and Taj Mahal), and The McCrary Sisters, earning himself two Dove award nominations for writing and producing in the process. Now, it’s time for Hughley to step away from the side and into the spotlight as Gtar Phil & The Chank with the release of his new EP, Worker Bee, a collection of blues-inspired, Americana-leaning gems—another deviation from the path. In spite of his rock and funk background, Hughley found himself veering into a new musical lane, under the encompassing umbrella of Americana music. And Americana music needs a voice like Phil Hughley’s.

American singer-songwriter Laura Bird is a shape-shifter who can't sit still. Since 2010 she's worked under the moniker The Mynabirds, releasing four critically acclaimed and stylistically different albums on Saddle Creek: What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood (2010) and GENERALS (2012), both produced by Richard Swift, Lovers Know (2015), and BE HERE NOW (2017). She has also toured as a member of the Postal Service (2013) and Bright Eyes (2011), helped found Omaha Girls Rock (a non-profit helping young girls find their voices), and in 2013 gave a TED talk based on her "New Revolutionists" portrait project, exploring what it means to be a revolutionary woman in this day and age. Before The Mynabirds, Laura was a member of DC indie band Georgie James with Q And Not U's John Davis, and also put out two self-produced solo albums on the label she founded herself, Laboratory Records. The Mynabirds' newest album, BE HERE NOW, is a collection of 9 songs written and recorded in just 2 weeks in January 2017 following the Inauguration and the Women's March. Singer Laura Burhenn worked with producer Patrick Damphier in his Nashville studio (which he was being evicted as the neighborhood began to gentrify, old warehouses turning to tech offices and luxury condos) to document the news and peoples’ intense emotional responses to it all in real time. No stranger to politics in her songwriting, Laura aimed to speak from the voice of the collective consciousness in a work of "Emotional Journalism," singing the heartbreak, anger, exhaustion and resolute hope she witnessed during the Muslim travel ban, the final stand at Standing Rock, and every other news story that rattled America in that period. The album vacillates in style and feel to reflect a frayed nation, featuring the legendary McCrary Sisters on title track “Be Here Now,” a Burundian refugee choir on a song for immigrants, and a cacophony of dissonant saxophones in a new national anthem on another. It is the last recording made in that space. http://www.themynabirds.com eastforest.org/podcast

THE McCRARY SISTERS are the daughters of the late Rev. Samuel McCrary, who was one of the original members of the legendary gospel quartet, The Fairfield Four. Ann, Deborah, Regina, and Alfreda were raised in harmony, singing at home and at their father's church. The McCrary's home was filled with music, whether it was the Fairfield Four or frequent guests that included a pantheon of gospel greats, including Shirley Caesar and James Cleveland. Collectively the sisters have performed or recorded with Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Stevie Wonder, Ray Stevens, and others. The sister's new CD "Our Journey," include stunning covers of Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind" and Julie Miller's "Broken Pieces" as well as six McCrary Sister originals (including one co-written by Regina and Bob Dylan. DANNY FLOWERS is the awe-inspiring guitar guru, soulful singer and hit songwriter. His hits included "Tulsa Time" for Don Williams and Eric Clapton; "Back In My Younger Days" for Don Williams; "Gulf Coast Highway" for Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, and Nanci Griffith (co-written with Griffith and James Hooker); and "Before Believing" from Harris' Pieces of the Sky. In addition he has been a session musician for Williams, Griffith, Vince Gill, Marshall Chapman, and Dobie Gray. Flowers has also enjoyed a solo recording career including the 2007 album, Tools For The Soul.
