“A Household of Holiness” with Graham McCarthy — 1 Peter 2:4-12 September 3, 2023 What does it look like to be a Christian?  what does it mean to have a Christian identity?  Jesus has told his people to be in the world, not of the world (John 17:16), but what does that look like?  We will be looking at our identity as Christians, and looking at how we can look like Christ together, so that when someone sees us, they can say "this person must love Jesus." Graham has attended Pilgrim Church for nearly four years now.  He is engaged in a home church, he plays on the worship team, and you will recognize his big laugh whenever the preacher says something funny.  He received a Bachelor's in Christian ministry from Prairie college in 2015, and an MDiv from Carey Theological college in 2021, He has been serving at Vancouver's Union Gospel Mission since 2017, where he constantly gets roasted by Vancouver's sassiest kids.  Currently he's also undergoing some chaplaincy training with Providence health care.  You can often find him riding around town on his bicycle and gloating about how much money he doesn't spend on gas, and performing occasionally at the improv centre on Granville Island, trying his hardest to make people laugh with varying results.

Although Vancouver Island is known to experience some of the balmiest weather during the winter in Canada, Vancouver isn't too far behind. It's considered to be the third warmest city north of the border in the colder months.By Steve FennellRVing and staying at an RV park in Vancouver is all about experiencing one of the province's most exciting destinations. Like visiting any large city, it's ‘all about the location' and easy access to services and attractions. While there are a few comfortable campgrounds around the Greater Vancouver Area, Capilano River RV Park is at the heart of the action, while still providing comfort whether you stay for a few days, several weeks or all winter.Located in West Vancouver along the Capilano River that flows into the Burrard Inlet near the Lions Gate Bridge, the park is located about 10 minutes off the Trans-Canada Highway via Hwy 99 and Tomahawk Rd. Once in the park, the secured, gated property is supervised 24/7 and its 205 sites can accommodate a variety of RVs, including larger motorhomes and fifth wheels. You can also experience the heart of Vancouver. It's a quick drive over the Lions Gate Bridge and another 10-15 minutes to enjoy Stanley Park, English Bay Beach, Granville Island or the number of unique and trendy neighbourhood districts. The natural attractions are popular as well. West Van offers some of the city's best (and easiest) hiking trails. Plan your days visiting Cypress Falls Park with its towering 300-year-old trees and abundant wildlife or take one of the three easy loops in LightHouse Park among an old-growth forest.Feel like seeing more of the West Coast culture? The park is about 20 minutes to The BC Ferries' Horseshoe Bay Terminal from where you can sail to Snug Cove on Bowen Island with its unique cafés, pubs, and restaurants or Nanaimo with its shoreside attractions. Langdale is also popular. It's located at the south end of the famed Sunshine Coast and will provide great day - or even multi-day - trips. 1. The clean, spacious grounds of the Capilano River RV Park. 2. The secured front entrance to the park's grounds. 3. Need to relax? The hot tub is open throughout the year. 4. The heated pool is a popular area during the summer. 5. Many services and personal essentials are easily accessible from the park.

Michelle Ng brings people closer together by creating rewarding experiences through her two businesses – Vancouver Foodie Tours and Granville Island Gifting. Forbes has named Vancouver Foodie Tours one of the top 9 food tours in the world. They offer food walking tours, introducing guests to the culinary gems, vibrant cultures, and history that make Vancouver unique. Michelle's second business, Granville Island Delivery Co, was founded at the start of the pandemic as a way for the community to support local artisans and to send Granville Island gift boxes to friends and colleagues. Michelle has been recognized by The Entrepreneur magazine and Vancouver Sun for her contributions to uplifting the community during the pandemic. What excites Michelle the most? She loves to generate happiness and appreciation by creating rewarding experiences that uplift the community. Michelle's story is of resilience and optimism. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Michelle Ng about how she built her Foodie Tour business over 12 years and how her pandemic pivot led to the formation of a second company. She shares what she sees as a successful food tour in other destinations and why technology is core to both of her business's success. We also dive into a collaboration Michelle kickstarted involving other small tour operators and how that collaboration has subsequently resulted in an injection of funding. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Michelle's journey and how she got to where she is today with her two businesses How food has a magical power to bring people closer together and break down barriers What happened to Michelle's business when the COVID-19 pandemic hit North America How the Granville Island Delivery Co. came into being to serve the local community How Michelle evolved the design and marketing of her tours to better suit visitors who don't know anything about Vancouver Michelle gives an insight into her most popular tours and why visitors love them How technology has enabled Michelle to be able to run a successful business The part collaboration has played in spreading the word about Michelle's businesses and attracting visitors Michelle shares her advice for listeners hoping to grow and scale their business Refining Your Business Michelle Ng, founder of Vancouver Foodie Tours and Granville Island Gifting, shares why she is constantly in the process of tweaking and refining the experience she offers her customers. She describes why it is so important to her to be constantly listening to her customers, what they're asking for and what they're interested in. Pursuing excellence and creating rewarding experiences is very important to Michelle, and she highlights why it's at the core of what she does as a business owner. Creating a Network We discussed how Michelle got involved with her local destination marketing organization and details the two most effective steps she has taken to develop her business. She walks us through what she has learned from some of the world's most successful examples of food tours. Michelle also shares how the DMOs in Vancouver, in British Columbia, and in Canada have supported her work and provided access to the international markets by showing her how to pitch and win the business of tour operators worldwide. How Collaboration Led to Collective Success Both of Michelle's businesses are built on a foundation of collaboration, and she shares how that has contributed to her success. Michelle describes why she really believes in uplifting the community in everything she and her team do and why, whenever they are looking at partnerships or any other business decisions, they're striving to create win-win relationships. They view their foodie tour experiences through the lens of setting up an experience, interaction, or initiative in a way that serves everybody that's involved. Michelle also shares why she reached out to some of the small group tour companies in the city, who she felt were giving the highest quality experiences in the city, to suggest they form the Experience Vancouver Group so they could learn from each other and share their expertise. Visiting the Vancouver location of Maiwa to talk with founder and owner Charllotte Kwon was one of those pinch-me moments. I was surrounded by beautiful textiles in a warehouse/office/store while we talked about the history of the company, the connections and research they are doing with farmers in India, and the many many projects they have in the works. Maiwa has a 30-year history in the natural dye industry and the focus has always been on sustainable practices. Thirty years ago Charllotte Kwon formed a company and opened a shop. The shop was located in a new community of artisans that had formed on Granville Island. The Island, through its concentration of fine artists, printers, bookbinders, papermakers, potters, theatres, retailers, students, and industry, redefined itself as the cultural heart of Vancouver. The company was called Maiwa. In Cantonese and Mandarin “maiwa” is a word used to name the language through which art speaks. Maiwa. Beautiful language. Natural dyes are more than an ecologically smart way to add colour to yarns and cloth. Natural dyes embody the idea that there is a relationship between creativity, skill, what we make, what we wear, and the natural world. For Maiwa, natural dyes are evidence that colour can be a cultural force linking individuals to history and tradition. They work directly with farmers and run a full-time natural dye studio.Charllotte Kwon is the owner of Maiwa Handprints Ltd. and the director of the Maiwa Foundation. Through Maiwa, Charllotte also runs a textile archive and research library located on Granville Island in Vancouver, Canada. Under her direction Maiwa has produced four documentary films and a number of print publications. She also guides Maiwa's substantial web presence.Charllotte travels extensively each year to research handcraft and to supplement her natural-dye research. Always looking to extend natural dye use, she also teaches dyeing workshops with artisans around the world and has planned a series of natural dye master classes to bring exceptional practicing artisans together. In 2014 she was awarded an Honourary Doctorate of Letters from the University of the Fraser Valley for her work in promoting the continuation of traditional textile techniques and cultures. In 2017 Charllotte was awarded the Robert Jekyll Award for Leadership in Craft (Canada). The same year she was an organizer for the Indigo Sutra Conference in Kolkata, India.Maiwa Website: https://maiwa.com/Maiwa School of Textiles: https://maiwa.teachable.com/Maiwa Handprints Ltd.1310 Odlum Drive Vancouver BC V5L 3M3Phone 604 669 3939 You can find me, Bridget O'Flaherty - The Sustainable Quilter here:www.bridgetoflaherty.comInstagram: @thesustainablequilterFacebook: @thesustainablequilterYoutube: Bridget O'Flaherty The Sustainable QuilterSupport the show buy me a cuppa tea!https://bridgetoflaherty.com/product/support-the-podcast/Music Credit: Thanks to Isaac Matthews for his incredible talent. You can find and follow him on Instagram @hesjustakid for more of his music. Support the show

James has been keeping this little part of the greater Seattle plan in his back pocket all this time and, when Ellie was going to be unavailable for a few days, it was the perfect opportunity to spring it on Denise. “Mission: Canada” was ON. Despite massive skyrises being constructed all around us, we managed some killer hikes in Mosquito Creek and Stanley Park. Vancouver was an incredibly clean city for its size and the views from the bridges and cliffs landed this “foreign” city on the long-shot list of our future possibilities.   Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/0LY5k3G0n03N0pDtO8Zx72 Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/skiptown-all-stars/id1636817938  Amazon https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/c27fdc73-d7ad-495d-8931-3df036c4a8b5/skiptown-all-stars Google https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5saWJzeW4uY29tLzQyODYxNi9yc3M%3D Stitcher https://www.stitcher.com/show/skiptown-all-stars YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYY1gCsalt6kItqF6yG2cqKJVLyGvW-OO   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/skiptownallstars/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@skiptowndenise Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/skiptownallstars Twitter: https://twitter.com/skiptownallstar Web: http://skiptownallstars.com WHERE WE WENT: Lonsdale Quay Hotel in North Vancouver - Hotel was junky but it's above a market near the SeaBus ferry which was really cool. Mosquito Creek Park - great hike, and Roxy finally found her mojo here. Granville Island - great community market with tons of food joints and farm goods, local artisan shops and a pier where the locals and tourists graze together while overlooking the harbor. Thumbs WAY up. Stanley Park - As stated, this park has miles of gardens, views and play areas for the kiddies. It's pretty big and it was busy, but it never felt overcrowded. Denman Street - a solid few miles of every type of cuisine you could wish. So many areas in Vancouver are similar to Denman, but this street is right by Stanley Park so it's a no-brainer for visiting Euros, Americanos and whoever the hell else wants to nosh.

From The Cat Came Back, Polly Wolly Doodle, We're Gonna Shine, to You Can Do It (If You Try), once you hear Fred's songs, you'll be singing along all day. Fred Penner has been the soundtrack to so many kids' lives and now those kids (myself included) are raising their kids on his music! His positivity and upbeat music is fun to listen to for those young and old. His songs are about encouragement, love, kindness, feelings and being positive. It was my sincere honour to interview Fred Penner for this episode. In this episode, we talk about his 13th album, Hear the Music, current tour, his views on the state of parenting and families today, raising his own kids, how he creates his music and the messages in his songs. It's the most wonderful conversation that I know you will enjoy as much as I did. It was the perfect way to celebrate my 150th episode of Parenting our Future! Fred's tour dates include May 28th and 29th at the Arts Theatre in Surrey with Charlotte Diamond and Rick Scott. May 30th to June 5th at the Vancouver Children's Festival on Granville Island, Vancouver. We talked about a previous episode of Parenting our Future, with Dr. Shimi Kang, “The Tech Solution” the link is below https://www.parentingforconnection.com/parentingourfuture/episode/cef039c6/the-tech-solution-with-dr-shimi-kang-or-pof62 For , you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com About Fred Penner Fred Penner could be forgiven for wanting to hang up his guitar and just relax. As Canada's foremost family entertainer, the genial singer/songwriter really has nothing left to prove. Witness his 12 previous albums with their 10 JUNO Award nominations and three wins. See also Fred's 12 seasons (and nearly 950 episodes!) hosting the hit CBC TV show, Fred Penner's Place. There are also his performances alongside luminaries including (but not limited to) Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, Raffi, Sharon Lois & Bram and Buffy Sainte-Marie; his status as the first kid's performer to headline the Los Angeles Amphitheater; his honourary doctorates and his prestigious Member of the Order of Canada and Member of the Order of Manitoba. Oh, and let's not forget his winning turn as emcee of the cutting-edge 2015 Polaris Music Prize or his altruistic, globe-trotting work as an Ambassador for World Vision. All fabulous and notable. But at the end of the day, Fred loves making music and connecting with audiences of all ages. And so, despite a resume as long as it is glittery, Fred Penner is set to return with lucky album number 13, Hear The Music. Hear The Music features a roll call of marquee Canadian talent including (but not limited to) Ron Sexsmith, Alex Cuba, Basia Bulat, The Good Lovelies, Terra Lightfoot, Afie Jurvanen (a.k.a Bahamas) plus backup vocals from Fred's own family, all tethered to the sterling production of long-time collaborator Ken Whiteley. Says Fred: “Hear The Music brings me together again with my dear friend, producer Ken Whiteley, who so lovingly guided me through the process of making this album. I am honoured to have worked with him and the wealth of passionate, talented musicians who provided their creativity and support on this exciting project!” With 14 songs played by an acclaimed roster of musicians (jazz bassist George Koller, saxophonist Mike Murley) and with Fred himself on guitar, ukulele, harmonica, flute and jawharp, Hear The Music truly has something for everyone. Hey y'all! We're back with another episode - in honor of Filipino Heritage Month in Canada, we will be featuring some of the notable Filipino-Canadian entrepreneurs who are putting Filipino products on the world map. Kicking off our 'Community Cultivator' Series is Vincent Garcia from Kasama Chocolate. We talk about the the history of cacao in the Philippines, the story behind creating bean-to-bar chocolate from Philippine cacao beans, and becoming a disrupter in the specialty chocolate industry by winning international awards with Filipino chocolate products - including gaining accolades for their single origin 70% Davao chocolate bar. By being rooted in the Filipino identity and gaining international recognition, Kasama Chocolate is an example of when we are stand in our power as a Filipino, we become living examples of Filipino excellence. The heart of the company is also rooted in its name, "Kasama" - which is the Tagalog word for friendship, camaraderie and collaboration - proving that success is a collective effort best achieved, together. In the spirit of community, we also talk about why it's important to work together towards openness and dialogue behind our struggles in order to learn from each other and elevate each other to thrive and succeed. We also discuss the generational shift happening today where many 2nd gens and beyond are rising to the challenge and becoming a part of the Filipino culture movement. Based in Vancouver BC, Vincent Garcia is one of the co-founders and owners at the international award-winning, bean-to-bar chocolate shop KASAMA CHOCOLATE on Granville Island. A second-generation Filipino-Canadian, born to Itawis and Ilocano parents who immigrated to Canada in the 1970s, Vince credits chocolate-making for allowing him to delve deeper into his roots and discover the beauty and nuances of our culture during Philippine cacao origin visits to Cagayan, Malvar, Zamboanga Del Sur, and the Cordilleras to name a few. Holding true to the name of the chocolate company - KASAMA - Vince hopes to help build and nurture collaboration and camaraderie within the newly emerging Filipino Food Movement scene and business community in Vancouver and beyond. With polls showing a surge in NDP support, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau continues to warn voters away from the New Democrats. He says a vote for the NDP would result in a Conservative government. To counter Trudeau's argument, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh says he would cooperate with any party, other than the Conservatives, in a minority situation. He argues voting NDP does not mean electing the Conservatives. He met voters at the Turkey Trot run on Granville Island this morning, and then heads downtown to meet with striking hotel workers in the noon hour. Conservative leader Andrew Scheer is campaigning in Winnipeg today. Guest: Abigail Bimman Global National Ottawa correspondent, currently reporting from the Liberal campaign
