It is often said that preparation shapes celebration. That's why in this episode, we prepare our hearts for what's to come. This year, Erich Erdman, Pastor Lydia Miller, and Pastor Jeff Moes, do so by walking us through the crucifixion through the eyes of someone who was there. We'll explore the events through the experiences, missteps, and humanity of a man named Peter. Chosen by Jesus to be one of His closest disciples, Peter was more than a follower—he was a dear friend. He was there for miracle after miracle, teaching after teaching, and he boldly declared his loyalty to the One he called theMessiah. So, what happened? What led to Peter's famous denial and what can you and I learn in light of it? --WebsiteFacebookInstagramSunday SetlistConnect with us!
La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy
Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. 2 Samuel 7: 4-5a.12-14a.16; Rs psalm 89: 2-3.4-5.27.29; Romans 4: 13.16-18.22; Matthew 1: 16.18-21.24aJOSEPH THE MAN WHO GIVES SOLUTIONS Our meditation today has the theme: Joseph the Man WhoGives Solutions. The historical account of salvation conveyed by the scripturesshows great figures who have had a great influence on us. A man as great asAbraham, as the second reading of the Letter of the Apostle Paul to the Romansconveys, was the father of many nations on the basis of his faith. A figure aspowerful as King David, as the first reading of the second book of Samuelconveys, occupies the throne of government that God has prepared for generationsto be passed down from generation to generation in order to realize God's willfor the coming of the Messiah. But in their times, the coming of the Messiah wasstill limited to the promises and prophecies of the prophets. The generalunderstanding of the profile of the Messiah is that of a fighter, warrior, liberator, and ruler of mankind. Period after period and characters change, thediscussion of the figure of the Messiah seems to contradict between God's willwith limited human understanding and belief. This continued until the Lord'stime was right to signify the coming of the true Messiah, which began with theevent of the glad tidings from heaven to a very humble virgin named Mary ofNazareth. The Messiah must give up all privileges that accordingto the general assumption are entirely supernatural. The most sensitive issuethat could become a public scandal was that the virgin conceived the Son of Godto be a human person, who had to become the Messiah. Who can be the solution,in anticipation of the spread of a great scandal, so that the prodigy child whowas born later to be declared to have biological parents? Without giving roomfor people to polemic or question it, the Lord God already has the answer, namely a man of David's descendance who lived in Nazareth. He was Joseph, thecarpenter, who was made the Virgin Mary's husband. A man of great modesty, sincerity, and purity, Josephwas made by God the solution to the plan of salvation of the coming of theMessiah, Jesus Christ. Thus, the Nazareth family is complete as a solutionwhose characteristic is their modesty, sincerity, humility, willingness, andpurity of heart. The Virgin Mary stands out for being just as simple andsincere as her husband. They are united with the Savior Jesus Christ whodisplays togetherness and fellowship as God's solution to the problems thatafflict our individuals, families, the Church, and our communities. Livingmodestly and sincerely became a solution to the life style of materialism andfalsehood. Communion as a family and community of faith is a solution to thethreat of division and disintegration. Let us pray. In the name of the Father... O Jesus Christ, make our hearts sincere and holy like Saint Joseph so that we may serve You andour neighbors with good faith. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to theHoly Spirit ... In the name of the Father...

God bless you.(This call to patience and waiting happens in all our lives: a common experience in our walk with the Lord)Acts 1:1-11, esp. V. 4; Luke 2:21-40One Common experience in our Christian walk is to never stop waiting on the promisesof God: This is trusting perseverance. We all experience this in either the long form orthe short form. In Acts the disciples only had to wait 50 days, until the feast ofPentecost, to recruit the promise but for Simeon and Anna, and remember Abraham, itwas the long form trusting. Because in God's loving sovereignty, He retains the time andthe manner of all fulfillment and especially in the long time waiting situations He has His reasons: note Galatians 4:4-5.1) Sometimes we don't have to wait a long time; Acts 1:1-11 “only 50 days beforePentecost”2) Other times we must wait longer. This point is illustrated throughout the Biblebeginning with Abraham in Genesis and in Luke 2 with Simeon and Anna. Theyboth had important prophetic roles as to the identification of Jesus as theMessiah.a) Simeon was promised by the Holy Spirit that “he wouldn't die before hehad seen the Lord Christ!” (Luke 2:26). This implies that he was waiting along time. Then one particular day in God's time he was “moved by theSpirit to go to the temple courts just when the child Jesus and His parentswould be there. He then prayed and prophesied over Him a significantprophecy. God in perfect timing fulfilled His promise and Simeon did hisobedience verses 29-35.b) Anna even beats Abraham in waiting time, she was possibly waiting froma young married girl, her marriage lasted only 7 years. She spent the restof her life waiting or serving the Lord in prayer and fasting etc. She was 84years old when God's timing brought Jesus and His parents to her, toprophesy(verses 36-38). With God's help she was found faithful.3) To wait upon the Lord in the Bible does not assume passivity but activity.a) Both Anna & Simeon were actively waiting by serving in the temple bypraying and fasting etc: “Keeping occupied until He shows up.” oranswers. Consider the parable in Luke 19:12-27 who's message to thechurch is be faithful and diligent in serving God and His purposes untilanswers, even in the Long form. May the year 2024 be a prosperous yearfor your church and its servants and also for all our families and friends;may we experience a much more fruitful year of ministry, service andanswered prayer.

It's the love that we give and the love we receive. That unsaved loved ones would be given a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26).2. That unsaved loved ones would be given a renewed mind (Romans 12:2).3. After the miracle of feeding about five thousand men with five loaves and two fishes, we pick up in Mark 6:45-56 to see the disciples being sent to the other side of the sea while Jesus went into a mountain to pray. This time, another storm arises and the disciples learn a valuable lesson.
“The Year of the L ord ’s Favor” (Isa. 61:2, NRSV)Who is speaking in Isaiah 61:1?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________The Spirit of God is on this anointed Person, which means that He isa messiah or the Messiah. He is to “bring good news to the oppressed,to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, andrelease to the prisoners” (Isa. 61:1, NRSV). Whom does that soundlike? Compare Isaiah 42:1–7, where God’s Servant is described in verysimilar terms.Isaiah 61:2 talks about the “acceptable year of the Lord.” TheMessiah, who is anointed as the Davidic King and Deliverer, proclaimsa special year of divine favor at the time when He proclaims liberty.Compare Leviticus 25:10, where God commands the Israelites to pro-claim liberty in the holy fiftieth year: “It shall be a jubilee for you: youshall return, every one of you, to your property and every one of you toyour family” (NRSV). This means that persons who had been forced tosell their ancestral land or to become servants in order to survive hardtimes (Lev. 25:25–55) would reclaim their land and freedom. Becausethe jubilee year began with the blowing of a trumpet on the Day ofAtonement (Lev. 25:9), we have mentioned this passage before in con-nection with Isaiah 58.While “the year of the Lord’s favor” (NRSV) in Isaiah 61:2 is a kind ofjubilee year, it is not simply an observance of Leviticus 25. This year isannounced by the Messiah, the King, when He reveals Himself througha ministry of liberation and restoration. This is similar to some ancientMesopotamian kings who promoted social kindness by proclaimingrelease from debts during early years of their reigns. The Messiah’s min-istry goes far beyond the scope of the Leviticus 25 law. Not only does He“proclaim liberty to the captives,” but He also binds up the brokenhearted, comforts those who mourn, and brings about their restoration (Isa.61:1–11). Furthermore, in addition to “the year of the Lord’s favor,” Heproclaims “the day of vengeance of our God” (Isa. 61:2, NRSV).When was Isaiah’s prophecy fulfilled? (Luke 4:16–21.) How didJesus’ ministry accomplish this? Also, ask yourself this impor-tant question: we, of course, are not Jesus. But we are to rep-resent Him to the world. What are the things the Messiah does,as expressed in Isaiah 61:1–3, that we, in our limited capacities, should be doing, as well? And what are some of the practical waysin which we can do these things?
Further Thought: Read Ellen G. White’s description of Jesus’ heal-ing and teaching ministry in “At Capernaum,” The Desire of Ages, pp.252–261.“In the work of soul winning, great tact and wisdom are needed. The Savior never suppressed the truth, but He uttered it always in love.In His [dealings] with others, He exercised the greatest tact, and Hewas always kind and thoughtful. He was never rude, never needlesslyspoke a severe word, never gave unnecessary pain to a sensitive soul.He did not censure human weakness. He fearlessly denounced hypoc-risy, unbelief, and iniquity, but tears were in His voice as He utteredHis scathing rebukes. He never made truth cruel, but ever manifesteda deep tenderness for humanity. Every soul was precious in His sight. He bore Himself with divine dignity; yet He bowed with the tender-est compassion and regard to every member of the family of God. Hesaw in all, souls whom it was His mission to save.”—Ellen G. White,Gospel Workers, p. 117.Discussion Questions: As a class, read over what Ellen G. White wrote above abouthow Christ ministered to others. Discuss the principles there, andthen as a class discuss how well your own church reflects thoseprinciples corporately. Do you know a “bruised reed” or “dimly burning wick” (Isa.42:3, NRSV)? How can you help this person without “breaking” or“quenching” him or her? In what ways can you point such peopleto the Lord? In a practical sense, what would you tell them to doin order to get healing and help? The argument for different authors of Isaiah originated fromthe premise that people cannot tell the future the way Isaiah did. What is the fundamental problem with this argument, and whymust we, as Christians, reject that premise outright?Summary: Deliverance requires a Deliverer. God’s servant nation wouldbe delivered by two deliverers: Cyrus, who would set the captives freefrom Babylonian exile, and an unnamed Servant, whose identity as theMessiah is progressively revealed. This Servant would restore justice andbring the community of survivors back to God.
Persian “Messiah”(Isa. 44:26–45:6)What stunning prediction appears in Isaiah 44:26–45:6?Isaiah’s ministry lasted from about 745 b.c. to about 685 b.c. After men-tioning a conqueror from the east and from the north (Isa. 41:2, 3, 25) andimplying that this was to be good news for Jerusalem (Isa. 41:27), Isaiahaccurately predicted Cyrus by name and described his activities. He didcome from north and east of Babylon and conquer it in 539 b.c.; he didserve God by releasing the Jews from their Babylonian exile; and he didauthorize the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem (see Ezra 1).Put this prediction into perspective. Since there are about onehundred forty-six years from the time of Isaiah’s death to the fall ofBabylon, his prophecy was a century and a half ahead of its time. Itwould be like George Washington predicting that a man named GeneralDwight Eisenhower would help liberate Europe in 1945!Because the actions of Cyrus are well attested from a variety ofancient sources, including Babylonian chronicles, his own report in the“Cyrus Cylinder,” and the Bible (2 Chron. 36:22, 23; Ezra 1; Daniel5; Dan. 6:28; Dan. 10:1), the accuracy of Isaiah’s prophecy is beyonddispute. This confirms the faith of people who believe that true proph-ets receive accurate predictions from God, who knows the future far inadvance. Why does God call Cyrus “His anointed”? (Isa. 45:1)The Hebrew word for “anointed” here is the word from which weget the word Messiah. Elsewhere in the Old Testament, this word couldrefer to an anointed high priest (Lev. 4:3, 5, 16; Lev. 6:22), an anointedIsraelite king (1 Sam. 16:6; 1 Sam. 24:6, 10; 2 Sam. 22:51), or theMessiah, a future ideal Davidic king and deliverer (Ps. 2:2; Dan. 9:25,26). From Isaiah’s perspective, Cyrus was a future king, sent by Godto deliver His people. But he was an unusual messiah, because he wasnon-Israelite. He would do some things the Messiah would do, such asdefeat God’s enemies and release His captive people, but he could notbe the same as the Messiah, because he was not descended from David.By predicting Cyrus, God proved His unique divinity by demonstrat-ing that He alone knows the future (Isa. 41:4, 21–23, 26–28; Isa. 44:26).He also reached out to Cyrus: “I will give you the treasures of darknessand riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, theLord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name” (Isa. 45:3, NRSV).Think about some other Bible prophecies that have come to passas predicted (such as all the kingdoms of Daniel 2 except the last,Daniel 7, or regarding the time of Christ in Daniel 9:24–27). Whatkind of hope do these prophecies offer us as individuals?

IntroductionJohn 1:35-42 “35Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.36And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do youseek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher),“where are You staying?”39He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).40One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, SimonPeter’s brother.41He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found theMessiah” (which is translated, the Christ).42And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You areSimon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, AStone).”The encounter of these two disciples of John the Baptist with Jesus led from aquestion, to an invitation, then to a decision and finally to an occupation. The Setting for Palm Sunday Various Passages April 14, 2019I. Introduction:A. The setting for any story is a crucial element of the story.1. Just think if you missed the first 15 minutes of the Wizard of Oz and all yousaw was the rest of the story without being introduced to key characters, thetornado that knocked Dorothy out and not know why she was trying so hardto get back to Kansas!2. That setting helped us better understand the events, characters and theconclusion to the story of the Wizard of Oz!B. The setting is also important to the story of the triumphal entry of Jesus intoJerusalem. It helps us get some context as to what was really going on, helps ussee the importance of that event, we learn more about Jesus from it, and finallythe theme of that event that we celebrate today on Palm Sunday.C. My goal this morning is to show “what is the big deal” with this event that kickedoff …1. The most important week in the history of this whole world which resulted inthe death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.2. And it kicked off a series of events that eventually led to Jesus’ departurefrom this world, His ascension when He went back to heaven.• To accomplish this goal let’s look at …II. The setting to the Triumphal EntryA. Turn to Luke 9:29-31.1. This passage was the time that Jesus was transfigured on the mountain whileHe was praying. It goes on to tell us that two men appeared at that time andwere talking with Jesus, those two men were Moses and Elijah.2. Wouldn’t you have loved to be in on that conversation and listen to what theywere talking about?3. Read 29-31.4. They were talking about His departure, His departure from this world afterHe died, rose and ascended to heaven. And it was going to take place inJerusalem.5. I would say since that was their discussion during the transfiguration of JesusChrist then it would put that topic right at the top of importance list!B. Look at Luke 9:51 and read1. We see here that the days were approaching regarding His ascension whichHe talked about with Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration.2. In light of that, Jesus was determined to go to Jerusalem. It literally meansHe “set His face” to go to Jerusalem. That means Jesus had a strong, firmand unchanging commitment to go to JerusalemC. Then in Chapters 13 and 17 it makes a point of telling us about Jesus teaching anddoing miracles while He was on his way to Jerusalem.D. Turn to Luke 18:31-34 where Jesus told the twelve disciples why He was going toJerusalem. Read v31-34E. Turn to Luke 19:11 as they now were getting real close to Jerusalem. And thetwelve disciples had a whole different idea as to why they thought they wereheading to Jerusalem.1. Read 19:112. They thought it was time for the kingdom of God to appear3. But in the next verse Jesus starts to tell them a parable that indicates He isgoing to be going on a long trip, receive a kingdom, then return back again.Read v124. No, that earthly kingdom of God is not going to start now but after a longperiod of time when I return!F. Look down at 19:28 where we see that they were so close that Jesus sends two ofHis disciples ahead to get a donkey, actually a colt – a young male donkey, tobring to Jesus.1. Read v28-352. And now we are ready for the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.• So it is clear that this entry is important. But to understand why this is thesignificance and Jesus had to do this we need to seeIII. The setting behind the settingA. We find this by looking at three key Old Testament passages that actually refer to“this” event of Jesus coming into Jerusalem. And these will help us understandwhy this is so important, exactly what was going on that day.B. Turn to Psalm 118:22-26. This is what is known as Messianic Psalm – simply aPsalm that speaks of the Messiah, the Christ, the coming Savior and King, notonly of Israel but of the whole world.1. As I read watch fora) The rejection of the Messiah, the stone, by the builders but God takingthat rejected stone and making it the chief corner stone for His building,His church, His kingdom.b) Also note that the psalmist calls upon Him to save them, and they givetheir blessing upon this one, this corner stone who comes in the name ofthe Lord2. Read3. Note in Acts 4 that Peter told the rulers and elders of Israel, their leaders, their builders, that they had crucified Jesus the Christ whom God raised –then he said this. Read Acts 4:11-124. So we learn in this passage that there is going to be a rejection by the leadersof God’s Messiah, His Christ, His King and a praise of Him by the people!C. Turn to Daniel 9:25-261. And it is important to realize this book was written 600 years before Jesuscame!2. Here we see what I believe is the most amazing prophecy in Scripture whereGod tells Israel the exact date the Messiah will come to them. I did a sermonon this 16 years ago where I broke down the whole passage phrase by phrase(April 13, 2003) – I am sure you all remember it. But if you forgot it will beattached along with these notes on our church web page. Also CDsavailable!3. Actually from this verse if you do the calculations you will see the exact datethe Messiah, God’s anointed King will come to Israel.a) When the calculations are done you will see the date is April 6, 32 AD –the exact date of the Triumphal Entry we are looking at today in Luke19. The day that Jesus officially presented Himself as the Messiah!4. Then the next verse tells us what will happen after this date. Read v26a) The Messiah will be cut off – the Hebrew word used to indicate a violentdeath. – An obvious reference to the Cross of Christb) Then after this violent death the city of Jerusalem and the Temple will bedestroyed by enemies. –(1) We know from history that the city of Jerusalem and the Templewere destroyed in 70 AD by the Roman army under the leadershipof General Titus.D. Final prep verses I want you to see is in Zechariah 9:9-10. A book that waswritten 500 years before Jesus came! Read and point out1. Their king was going to come to Jerusalem bringing salvation and riding on adonkey, specifically a colt a young male donkey. v92. And note that He is coming to bring peace v10a) He is going to cut off the chariot, horse and bow – all instruments of war.b) He will speak peace to the nations3. His reign will be over the entire world!• Now let’s go back to Luke 19 and read the account with all this setting now in ourminds.IV. Triumphal EntryA. We already saw in the setting to this that Jesus was coming into Jerusalem and Heis going to be on the colt of a donkey, just like Zechariah 9 says and He is alsocoming in on the exact date Daniel 9:25 told us that the Messiah would come toJerusalem. April 6, 32 ADB. So let’s read this – Read Luke 191. Read 35-37a2. Remember we learned in Psalm 118 that the people will praise him but theleaders will reject Him.a) Listen to 37b-39b) They actually quoted the very words of Psalm 118 but changed it fromone who comes to the King who comes. Because of the miracles theysaw they knew He was the Messiahc) The religious leaders told Jesus to stop the people from calling Him theKing. They rejected Jesus as the King.3. Note Jesus’ response to what just happened as he was approaching Jerusalem.Reada) V41-42(1) “This” day – this specific day – April 6 32 AD the date that Danielhad told you about.(2) This day with a proper response would have brought the peace thatv10 of Zechariah 9 spoke of, cut off war weapons and bring peace.4. Now in the next few verses we see the enemies and destruction that Daniel9:26 told us would happen after the Messiah came to Jerusalem and would beviolently killed. Read 43-44b.5. The reason for all of this is found at the end of v44. Read 44ca) They did not recognize that they just got a visit from God, from theMessiah who would bring them peace and salvation.b) Rather than accepting and worshipping the Messiah the leaders of thenation rejected Him and actually sought to put Him to death – Read v47a fulfillment of Daniel 9:26 the violent death of the Messiah.C. Palm Sunday was the official presentation of God’s King to Israel, who came tobring peace and salvation and while the people recognized who He was theofficial leaders of the nation rejected Him.• There are two possible responses to this major event in Jesus life. First….V. ApplicationA. The religious leaders rejected Jesus because they did not recognize who Jesus wasor what was going on1. Read v44.2. Do you recognize that King Jesus is actually here at MVC this very morning? You can’t see Him but the Bible teaches very clearly He is with us when wegather in Jesus’ name3. And do you recognize what is going on here today is you just heard clearlywho Jesus is as proven by this very special event, the Triumphal Entry? AndHe is here today to bring you salvation and peace!4. John 1:9-13B. Is your response like the common people who recognized and praised Jesus astheir King?1. Read v37c-382. Read v40 – If they did not praise Him the stones on the street would havebecause this event was so big and important. This entry demands praise!!!!
REFLECTION QUOTES “To be always relevant, you have to say things which are eternal.” ~Simone Weil (1909–1943), French philosopher and activist “We're in a time where we exclude one major component out of this whole thing called life: God.” ~Kendrick Lamar, rapper, songwriter and producer “The Church's central Fact is a person, not a proposition, Truth made flesh, a man in history, thereby transforming both humanity and history's trajectory.” ~Ken Myers, social commentator “If the only thing human beings needed were a little external tweaking of their life circumstances, then the coming of Jesus to earth wouldn't make any sense. But if the greatest danger to all of us lives inside us and not outside us, then the radical intervention of the incarnation of Jesus is our only hope.” ~Paul Tripp, author and speaker “Marketing and consuming infiltrate every aspect of our lives and behavior. They filter all experience we have of ourselves. They become the standard of our final worth. Marketing and consuming ultimately reveal us to ourselves as things.” ~John F. Kavanaugh, priest and writer “The Bible is God's anthropology rather than man's theology.” ~Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972), leading Jewish theologian-philosopher of the 20th century “God had one son on earth without sin, but never one without suffering.” ~St. Augustine (354-430), bishop in North Africa “The dignity of human nature, fashioned in the divine image, is such that God can take it for himself—and keep it.” ~Dr. Nigel Cameron, bioethicist and writer SERMON PASSAGE Matthew 2:1-11 (ESV) 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, 2 “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where theMessiah was to be born. 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: 6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; For out of you shall come forth a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.'” 7 Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.” 9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Dedication of JesusLuke 2:21-38 December 2 2018I. Introduction:A. This Christmas season we want to look at the story of Jesus’ birth in light of one ofthe key people in this story, in fact outside of Jesus this person played the biggestrole in the Christmas Story that is His mother Mary.1. We are going to see how Mary was a woman of faith, praise and depth evenat a very young age.2. Then we will come back on Christmas Eve and take a quick look at how thisstory of Mary fits into the larger story of what God was doing as Hisfingerprints and His purposes are all over these stories.B. We are going to do this by looking at the account of the story of Jesus’ birth in thebook of Luke. He wrote this book so an official named Theophilus and we, as well, could know the exact truth of what happened with Jesus as he wrote an orderlyaccount of the events of Jesus life.C. This morning, since it is child dedication Sunday, we are going to be looking at thededication of Jesus about 40 days after His birth.1. While it is chronologically out of order in Jesus’ story, it does fit thematicallywith our dedications this morning. We are actually beginning with the endof the birth account rather than the beginning.a) There is an advantage to that because the conclusion of the story reallyhelps us understand a bit more of why Jesus was born, which had beenbecomes a bit clearer with every story.2. So as we come to this story this morning remember that already a few thingshave happened – the angel appeared to Mary to announce to her that shewould be the mother of Jesus, Mary responded with a strong statement ofpraise that revealed her heart and God’s purposes for all that fear Him andfinally the actual birth of Jesus and what Mary had heard from the shepherdswho had a visit from an angel announcing the birth of Jesus to them.• So here is the story onII. Dedication Day for JesusA. Setting –1. It was forty days after the birth of Jesus. Mary and Joseph went fromBethlehem to Jerusalem, about six miles, to the temple to do two things thatthe Mosaic Law had required – dedicate Jesus to God and also to offer thesacrifices for the purification of Mary that was required of mothers who gavebirth.2. The same day that Joseph and Mary were heading to the temple so was a manfrom Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. As the story continues, we will seethat it was no coincidence that they both showed up on the same day, at thesame time. But rather a divine appointment from God.a) Turn to Luke 2 and read v25-27b) There are four things we learn about Simeon here(1) Righteous and devout man(2) Looking for the consolation of Israel – consolation means comfort, that time when Israel would be comforted, especially by theMessiah, the Christ. Listen to these OT passages (Is 49:13; 51:3;52:9; 66:13)(3) He was anointed by the Holy Spirit(4) God had revealed to him that he would not die until he saw theMessiahB. Listen to what happened next as Simeon takes Jesus in his arms and blesses God!1. Read v28-322. He basically says – God I can die now because I have seen the Messiah, theone who will be Savior of all peoples – Jew and GentilesC. Listen to the response of Joseph and Mary. Read v331. Were amazed – they marveled and wondered at what they just heard2. Not only about what Simeon said but I also believe everything they haveheard over the last ten months from the angels, shepherds and now fromSimeon. Read the second half of v33D. Then Simeon directly addressed Mary, listen – read v34-351. He told her that Jesus had a special assignment from God that would result inthe rising and falling of many in Israel – the rising to salvation of those whoaccept Him as Messiah and the downfall of those who reject Him2. Also, that she herself will bear deep pain in her soul because of Jesus.3. Maybe a little more information than the typical mom wants to hear at theirchild’s dedication but of course, Jesus was not the typical child with a typicalcalling on His life.E. It appears that at the very moment that God sent another affirmation for Mary andJoseph regarding everything they had been hearing.1. Listen read v36-382. Anna gave thanks to God and began to speak about this baby Jesus to all ofthose who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem!• So what does this story mean for you and me? I think there areIII. Two Main TakeawaysA. The first has to do with the whole meaning of Christmas, or even more so theultimate purpose for Jesus coming to earth!1. We see in this story that Jesus is the Messiah and as the Messiah He hascome to bring comfort to Israel and salvation to the entire world, both theJews and the Gentiles!2. Jesus’ presence, the Messiah they have been waiting for, was not going to bean easy ride either for Israel or for Mary as His mother. Many in Israel weregoing to fall because of Him and Mary was going to experience deep painherself.3. Bottom line we learn from this that the story of Jesus coming to earth wasabout redemption, redemption for all mankind, both Jew and Gentile and theredemption of the city Jerusalem – its waste places, wilderness and desert.B. The second takeaway has to do with you and me! Simply we should all have thesame attitude of Simeon.1. First, he spent his life looking forward to the comfort of Israel and Godblessed him by allowing to see the one who was going to do that – theMessiah, the Christ – Jesus Christa) But what he did not see was the actual fulfilment of that time of comfortas that is yet to come both in the kingdom here on earth for 1000 yearsand in eternity!b) But the attitude of looking forward to the return of the Messiah Jesus tofulfill this consolation is something that God is seeking to work in eachone of us by His grace. Read Titus 2:11-132. Secondly, the response that naturally flowed out of Simeon was blessing Godand from Anna it was to thank God. That is what we are going to do now aswe start this Christmas Season.
Hymns of Advent-Good Christian Men, Rejoice Luke 2:1-12, December 2, 2018 Reverend Chris Harper I. Who the message came to first (8) II. How they responded (9) III. What the message was (10-11) 1. Fear not, for behold… 2. Behold what? (A) The Messiah has arrived (11, 1st verse) (B) The Messiah brings good news for God’s people (10-11, 2nd verse) (C) The Messiah is the Savior and Lord (11, 3rd verse)
