In this Will speaks with Derek Daley, the incoming president of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP), about the transformative implications of the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act (SICAA) for outdoor behavioral health. This federal legislation focuses on increasing oversight, transparency, and accountability within youth treatment programs, aiming to establish national standards for ethical care and safety. Daley explains that the next two years will involve data collection and evaluation to guide future regulations, with NATSAP actively engaging policymakers to ensure the field's expertise and perspective shape these developments. He underscores the importance of trauma-informed care and community-based alternatives while advocating to preserve wilderness therapy as a vital option for families seeking outdoor behavioral healthcare. Daley also sheds light on the recent merger of the Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Council (OBH) Council with NATSAP, a decision driven by declining OBH membership and the closure of numeorus programs. This merger represents a strategic shift, enabling OBH's mission to thrive within NATSAP's broader organizational structure. Daley highlights OBH's legacy as a trailblazer in accreditation standards, safety data collection, and outcome tracking, which have influenced the entire field. With SICAA emphasizing data transparency and ethical practices, this partnership positions outdoor behavioral health programs to adapt and lead amid increasing federal oversight. Daley invites listeners to engage with these changes by attending the upcoming NATSAP conference and supporting initiatives that ensure the future of outdoor-based mental health care. Rob and Ryan DeLena are the co-authors of the Memoir Without Restraint: How Skiing Saved My Son's Life to be released in March of 2023. “As a child Ryan DeLena had difficulty controlling his emotional outbursts. This led to placement in therapeutic schools that relied on detrimental methods of behavior modification such as physical restraints. Nothing helped from a team of doctors to heavy medication. Then in 2010, Ryan was voluntarily committed to a mental hospital for further evaluation. His parents Rob and Mary Beth were counseled to place him in a group home. They refused… Written in two voices, Without Restraint is a joint father-son memoir told with both pain and levity, struggle and strength, adventure and heart. It is the story of a misunderstood boy, a father's growth, and a shared love of the outdoors that formed their unbreakable bond.” You'll hear both Ryan and Rob share their experiences with Therapeutic Schools in Massachusetts – getting both perspectives is powerful. Today's episode is all about understanding how the deepest experiences we had in our childhoods can manifest in our adult lives. Molly welcomes Dr. Brad Reedy and he explains that the “attachment wounds” that we have today really are the result of some traumas we may have had in the past when we were forming our identity and having first connections. These wounds may have been developed due to some kind of abandonment and/or negligence.    Dr. Brad also discusses the importance of expressing ourselves, showing up as who we are in all situations, and respecting our time to heal old traumas. You will also learn the concepts of gaslighting (a psychological term to refer to subtle manipulation) and narcissism (a characteristic of someone who has a wound of not being seen or recognized). Tune in!   Episode Quotes   “Once you're allowed to be who you are, you have access to all the energy, all the magic, all the love.” – Dr. Brad Reedy “If your children need you to be perfect, they're doomed. That's a fact. They just need you to be human and being human means making mistakes, apologizing, and working on it again.” – Dr. Brad Reedy     Key Highlights Dr. Brad talks about the importance of showing up authentically in life, expressing ourselves and knowing that people around will be ok with it; What's an attachment wound, how it affects us as adults, and how we can start to heal it in order to be better people; Often times when we were kids (and sometimes as adults) we were thought to sacrifice our inner peace to be accepted by parents/others; Dr. Brad explains how therapists, mentors, and coaches need to be a good fit because they're also humans and sometimes also need to work on themselves; The concept of gaslighting and how people can subtlety manipulate us into doubting ourselves; How to honor and respect our own time to properly heal the wounds from our traumas.   Related Links Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller Gaslight (1944)   About Dr. Brad Reedy Dr. Brad Reedy is a co-owner and Clinical Director of Evoke Therapy Programs, an experientially-based therapy program for adolescents, young-adults and families. In the wake of it all, more and more residential treatment centers and schools dealing with troubled teens are cropping up all over America. Many parents are perplexed as to which facilities are legitimate and which are not. Some folks even question the merits of the industry as a whole. Our guest today provides guidance for parents seeking therapeutic boarding schools like Shepherds Hill Academy. Our guest is Megan Stokes. Megan is currently the Director of Government and Public Relations for the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP). In February, 2017, she will reside as the Executive Director of NATSAP. In her role as Director of Government and Public Relations for NATSAP, Megan helped pave the way for some of the policies that govern our industry. Some of her family members have been through wilderness programs, giving her a personal connection with NATSAP. Select the Right Therapeutic Boarding School Our American citizenry has strayed so far off the rails morally that young people—and even many parents—have no solid place to land their feet when it comes to moral authority or what the parent/child relationship should actually look like. And, as Scripture alludes to, this is affecting the mental and spiritual health of everyone—not just our kids. I mean, look at who we had running for president. That's more indicative of the moral and mental health of the citizenry that voted them in than it is the actual candidates themselves. Concerning postmodern thought, I have been crying from the house-tops for over 30 years about what I've been seeing happening as the result of the cultural revolution of the 1960s. It became obvious to me how it was going to impact the parent-child relationship. But, to guys like James Dobson, and Francis Schaffer before him, they saw this coming over 50 years ago. This chaos and illogic bled over into the mental health field also. In fact, it bled over into every aspect of America's infrastructure—including education, government, entertainment, advertising, media—even the church—and of course, it's darn sure affected our families. Just the divorce rate alone is enough to negatively affect our kids. But, the logical progression of a postmodern worldview leads to chaos because it proposes that everyone does what's right in their own eyes (both parents and kids). So, from chaos the logical declension is insanity, destruction, and then death. And that's pretty much what we're seeing today. I think I heard that teen suicide has just become the second leading cause of death for kids ages 15-19, just behind accidental death. Discover in today's program: How parents should properly search for a therapeutic boarding school. What is NATSAP, and how can it help parents seeking placement. Why therapeutic boarding schools are necessary. What is the Miller Bill and how could it affect therapeutic boarding schools. Why parents choose to send their teen to a therapeutic boarding school. How NATSAP can help raise funds for the tuition of therapeutic boarding schools. Picture provided by: Unsplash
