Liz and Sarah continue to embrace this year’s team theme — Flower & Fly 2025 — by thinking of themselves as busy bees. Their organized buzzing has put them in a state of flow. In Take A Hike, Sarah shares why “art yarn” is a great metaphor for fighting perfectionism. In Take Two, they revisit the topic of muses and decide they’re going to start asking themselves, “What is your creative priority?” This week’s Hollywood Hack will make you smell good: Morton Essentials stick deodorant. Finally, Liz has two reality competition show recommendations for people who are missing Traitors — Million Dollar Secret on Netflix and Got To Get Out on Hulu. Liz and Sarah have entered an era of completion. They’ve had so many open projects, but now some are wrapping up — or at least moving to the next phase. It feels good! In Take A Hike, Sarah shares her list of things to do instead of doom scrolling. Some ideas? Meditate, bake something gluten-free, or “organize a small space.” Next, they revisit an L v. S (Liz versus Sarah) about planners. Liz has come around to Sarah’s planner love! This week’s Hollywood Hack will help you end meetings smoothly: Announce when there are two (or five or twenty) minutes left. Finally, Sarah recommends the book On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King. Sign up for Liz and Sarah’s Substack Newsletter at happierinhollywoodpod@substack.com. “The man in black fled across the desert, and the podcaster followed…” Welcome to the start of what is sure to be an epic journey. Step by step, over more than a dozen episodes, Talking Scared will be following the beam all the way to the Dark Tower – that mad edifice at the heart of Stephen King's opus. Maybe it's the heart of every story ever told… time will tell. Unlike Roland Deschain, I don't go alone. I'm joined by author and fellow King-nut, Nat Cassidy (Mary, Nestlings, When the Wolf Comes Home) and absolute newbie, Chris Panatier (The Phlebotomist, The Redemption of Morgan Bright) and in this first ever episode we tussle with the tricky, dusty, thorny opening that is Book One: The Gunslinger. What follows dives deep into the book, but is 100% spoiler free about anything beyond it. So if you've only read The Gunslinger, you're good to go. I hope you enjoy our wanderings. I hope you tinct. I hope you darkle. Summary:Some of the most notable authors in history have also been the most prolific - Stephen King, Michael Lewis, Agatha Christie. They have made a name for themselves by producing dozens, if not hundreds, of notable works. But what does it really mean to be prolific? How is it measured? And to what extent does being prolific equal success? In episode #117 of The Author's Corner, Robin is joined by Brock Swinson, whose mission is to uncover the secret to being a prolific writer. In their conversation, Brock divulges all kinds of insights and advice for writers who want to be prolific. They touch on topics such as research, writer's block, and accountability, and discuss what each of them has to do with being prolific. Brock also dispels many myths about the writing process and reveals the key to becoming a prolific writer: falling in love with the craft. Kaut gan. Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft begins by telling the story of his passion for writing. The core of the book, however, is a high-level how-to guide on what makes good fiction. He touches on writers' tools—vocabulary, grammar, and the elements of style—and offers guidance on the writing process, from story ideation to character development to the rewriting process. Seit Spider-Man: Far From Home lag das MCU im Kino still. (Weil das Kino still lag.) „The key word in back story is back“ schreibt Stephen King in On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft und das mag für Filme vielleicht sogar noch mehr gelten als für Romane.

Writers write, as they say. And no matter what form it comes in - warm letter, sales page, Facebook post, your first book - if you write, you're a writer. So there is great value in improving your craft. Today I'm changing things up. I'm sharing my 5 favorite books on writing, but not as a direct recommendation (they're not for everybody). Instead, I'm sharing what lessons they offer about navigating perfectionism, distractedness, and other mental gymnastics of the writing process.I recently hosted a charity breakfast for the Carolina Resource Center for Eating Disorders. After the event, a woman told me she wanted to write her first book. Ever the coach, I quickly shared a few books that helped me most, and it surprised me when she hadn't heard of them… mostly because they've been so ubiquitous in my life.Afterwards, I was inspired to record this episode and pass on some of the lessons these books handed to me. First, because they've taught me so much about writing, and also because they offer so much insight into life in general. Each book had a tremendous impact on me as a writer (two of them in particular, as you'll hear on the show), and helped me develop a greater understanding of myself and allow my first book The Soul-Sourced™ Entrepreneur book to come to life. Soak in the wisdom from these incredible titles, discover some common truths about the writing process, and I'll even share some tips on how to step out of the perfectionist left-brain world, and go deeper into the flow of your creativity, and the perception of yourself as a writer. In this talking shop episode, we discuss two of the writing tools that have been helpful to us in our writing. This month, Ashley's choice was Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative by Austin Kleon, and Sarah attempted to unravel some of the many benefits of reading On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King. For their leisure reading this month, Sarah has been catching up with Robert Galbraith's Cormoran Strike novels, finishing the fourth in the series, Lethal White, and beginning the fifth, Troubled Blood. Ashley got a great recommendation from a friend and has started a book called Fifty Fifty by Steve Cavanagh.
How many of us dream of meeting a glamorous Frenchman, finding a tumbledown house by the sea and restoring it together, whiling away our afternoons in the sparkling pool between writing sessions and heavy manual labour on crumbling walls? Well, anyway, I do. The first of Carol's Olive Farm book makes it clear that money was very tight, and while I was reading it I wanted to know how she felt when she took the risk of writing it. After all, she couldn't be sure it would earn the money she so desperately needed. I had thought that perhaps Carol's acting life and writing life would be two separate things, but she is enlightening about the ways in which she brings her training as an actress into the way she writes.Links:An Act of Love: http://www.caroldrinkwater.com The Olive Farm: http://www.caroldrinkwater.com/books/theolivefarm On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King: https://stephenking.com/works/nonfiction/on-writing-a-memoir-of-the-craft.htmlOn Writers and Writing by Margaret Atwood: https://www.virago.co.uk/titles/margaret-atwood/on-writers-and-writing/9780349006246/

Rejection comes with the territory when you're an aspiring writer. You can't let yourself get dejected and stop writing altogether, but we're only human and so it can be a tough thing to deal with. We think about rejection, and the tiny crumbs of encouragement you need in order to keep going. #PodcastersForJustice Internationally bestselling author, Matt Haig, spoke with me about how the novelist became an accidental "mental health expert," why writers need resilience, and the process behind The Midnight Library. One of the most successful writers of all time also happens to have written one of the most helpful writing craft books of all time. His name is Stephen King, and the book I'm talking about is of course On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. We recently discussed this book in our Daily Writer Community. Each month, we focus on a book that helps us with marketing, writing, or creativity. We had a great time discussing and applying this book. On this episode, I review seven lessons about writing we can learn from this amazing book. Use your writing to support your life. Have a dedicated writing space. Create a production schedule. Believe that you can be a good writer. Encourage someone to write. Write with an ideal reader in mind. Excavate stories instead of creating them. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? welcome to coffee date #2 with Amanda and Isela! During this literary blend we tackle the ever mystifying Stephen King. Brew a cup of coffee (or snap open a can of Vanilla Coke with coffee??) and join us while we discuss The Mist and On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft.
Magician’s Gambit, Chapter 24 Garion helps Aunt Pol shield the group from grolim mind-searching and is an accidental partner in the madding of a grolim’s mind when his aunt attacks. Sondra is walking into inspiration and feeling alive. Her artistic senses are waking up with the seasonal thaw. Ray Bradbury said, “Just write every day of your life. Read intensely. Then see what happens. Most of my friends who are put on that diet have very pleasant careers.” Most of the time, we writers are focused on output. We spend most of our time focused on the content we are creating, whether it's blog posts, podcasts, books, articles, or client work. But the basis for that content has to come from somewhere. There has to be an input. Our work as writers can't be focused just on the output. That's why reading is such a critical part of what we do. In fact, last year I released a podcast episode called "10 Ways to Read More in Less Time," and I encourage you to go back and listen to it. In this episode, I share five books that I believe every writer should read this year, and why you should read them. The books are: On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King Perennial Seller: The Art of Making & Marketing Working That Lasts by Ryan Holiday You Must Write a Book: Boost Your Brand, Get More Business, and Become the Go-To Expert by Honoree Corder Save the Cat! Writes a Novel: The Last Book on Novel Writing You'll Ever Need by Jessica Brody Do the Work: Overcome Resistance and Get Out of Your Own Way by Steven Pressfield Reading books by yourself is obviously helpful, but reading them with a group helps you apply what you are learning. Our Daily Writer Community features a monthly book discussion, in addition to weekly writing sprints, expert calls, courses, a private Facebook group, and so much more. If you want to run toward success instead of just walking, this group is definitely for you. *** If you enjoyed this episode, we would be grateful if you leave a review on Apple Podcasts. For episode 97, we feature another pre-pandemic conversation. Host, Aaron Nabus chats with writer Tony Fabro, the mastermind behind Three Panel Crimes on Instagram. Not only do they talk about Three Panel Crimes, but they discuss some of his book recommendations like Stephen King's, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft and Ed Brubaker's comic book, Criminal, which I have been reading the last few days. It's now become one of Aaron's favorites! Tony also shares some great resources like Khan Academy's “Pixar in a Box” an online class, that has lessons on the art of storytelling, animation, lighting and more. It's also free! If this is the first that you've heard of Three Panel Crimes, you are in for a treat! Each strip in this series is a crime that takes place in three panels, with no dialogue. Enjoy!

In today's episode, I talk about writing... Writing is an essential skill that deserves its own podcast episode because it's an important skill for digital marketers and business professionals in general. I discuss where to find side-gigs to get started as a copywriter, how to become a better writer, blogs and experts to follow, and more. The book I mentioned this episode is On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King, which I highly recommend that you read if you want to take your writing more seriously! This Stephen King inspired tale will make you think twice about going for a stroll along the roadside. Some years ago, I joined the Melbourne Writers Social Group, partly because writing can be lonely and also to spy on other writers, maybe even even collaborate on something. Mat Clarke, writer and performer in this podcast, is the organiser of the group. Each year MWSG produce an online anthology, I thought it might be fun to record ROADSIDE a piece from the anthology as a short podcast. Both Mat and I are fans of horror writer Stephen King, often quoting from King’s book On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. There’s more than a nod to King in this collaboration. I hope you enjoy listening to ROADSIDE: The Podcast, it’s sure to send a shiver up and down your spine! Cheers Noel Anderson ROADSIDE: The Podcast – Written and Performed by Mat Clarke – Edited and Directed by Noel Anderson – adapted from a short story in Melbourne Writers Social Anthology – Running time 4.46 minutes.
Since we've recently gained so many new listeners, we wanted to throw it back to one of our favorite episodes! I love this conversation with Pye! It was such a raw and in-depth conversation about the illusion of stability, the origin of most people’s fears, and the importance of developing a learning mindset. What is so fascinating about Pye’s journey is not just that he jumped from being a CPA to becoming a founder of an award-winning, multi-million dollar photography studio, it’s that he did that without having a passion for or knowing the first thing about photography. Like most of us, Pye started going down the traditional path. He became a CPA and worked for Ernst & Young before realizing that he did not like what he was doing. He quit, along with his two best friends Justin and Chris, in order to start a tech startup. When the funding for their startup fell through, the friends took on web development clients. One of their clients needed photographs taken and Pye assured them that they had a photography department that could take care of it! What I love about his story is that most people would not only shirk at taking on a task that they don’t know how to do but also avoid a “creative” profession that they are not skilled in. Pye, realizing that photography was a skill that could be acquired, looked at entering the wedding photography industry as a business and not a passion. That eye towards business has led Pye, and his partners, to create Lin and Jirsa Photography, a boutique Southern California wedding and portrait photography studio composed of an incredible creative team of 50 people that shoots over 300 weddings each year, with nearly 1,000 yearly client commissions. He is also a founder and partner in SLR Lounge, a premium educational community geared towards providing photographers with real-world shoot education with nearly a million monthly readers. What You’ll Learn in this Episode: My experience with launching this podcast! Specifically, how taking a risk in my own life led me to realize the opportunity in doing so. The breaking point that led Pye to quit his job and take a risk on himself How failed attempts at funding projects and business ventures became opportunities for exploration, self-discovery, and ultimately, success How he created a multi-million dollar business in photography with a positive “learning mindset” Why Pye has a “passionate dislike” of the word “stable” and the illusion it creates Where Pye believes most fear comes from and why it limits your opportunities and potential How developing a “Learning Mindset” allowed Pye to turn quitting and “failing” into growth, opportunity, and success Upcoming Events: LFAQ Live Event Sign Up Masterclass Sign Up Resources from the Show: Visit Lin and Jirsa Photography and explore his phenomenal photo blog On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King, ebook Listen to more inspiring quitters on my webpage! This week, Jake and his bodaciously beautiful bride, Ciara, review 1408. This Stephen King adaptation is somewhat unique, given that the story originated as an example in On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. He later revisited the characters and finished the story, collecting it with two others in an audiobook series, Blood and Smoke. The story surrounds Mike Enslin, played by John Cusack (Gross Point Blank, Say Anything, High Fidelity). This jaded, cynical writer lives something of a vagabond lifestyle, going to various allegedly haunted hotel rooms, reporting on his experiences in trite paperback novels. That is, until he receives an anonymous postcard advising him of the Dolphin Hotel. The manager, Gerald Olin, is played by the magnanimous Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Avengers, Cell). Olin tries somewhat desperately to talk Mike out of it, but our wry writer won’t be dissuaded and enters the room where no one has lasted more than 60 minutes anyway. This week’s “Hidden Track” is from Spirit Healer. The song is A Memory of the Ritual on their new record, Hollowform. Be sure to check them out on Spotify and read the accompanying short story. So, one of the big debates in the world of writing advice is the Write Every Day Debate. I know! I know. Sexy name. High stakes. But, honestly, it gets people so riled up. There are the Write Every Day Camp. They carry lit Twitter Torches and follow Stephen King who famously said: "Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.” Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft And then there are the Anti Burn Out Crew who say that you can't possibly write every day because your fingertips will fall off. People have Twitter wars about this. But to be fair, people also create character sheets and become hyper-focused on knowing their character's favorite color and think that's more important than what it is that the character wants with all her heart, or what the character is terrified of happening. WRITING Hint: Your character's motivations, her wants, the thing she's longing for and living to get? That's more important than her love of teal. WRITING TIP OF THE POD There is no one way to be a writer. If you can write every day, write every day. If you can't, don't, but make sure you still actually write. You can't really be a writer if you only talk about writing and don't actually do it. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Nobody cares what Lassie's favorite color might have been. They cared that he wanted to save his family. Don't stress the meaningless details. Not in your story and especially not in your life. Focus on what matters. SHOUT OUT! Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.” Cool beans, Billy, really nice line. But, like, really how hard is it to write some quippy lines and rhyme a few of them? I can do that. Yeah. I’ll just sit down right now and pound out a sonnet or something …Yup, just gonna write it right now … riiight now ... Anytime … Ah c’mon, why isn’t anything being written? This sucks. Is writing hard? Have I devalued the arts having never attempted them? Me? A businessman or something? No. You know what? Screw this, I’m going to go defund the humanities. The breaking point that led Pye to quit his job and take a risk on himself How failed attempts at funding projects and business ventures became opportunities for exploration, self-discovery, and ultimately, success How he created a multi-million dollar business in photography with a positive “learning mindset” Why Pye has a “passionate dislike” of the word “stable” and the illusion it creates Where Pye believes most fear comes from and why it limits your opportunities and potential How developing a “Learning Mindset” allowed Pye to turn quitting and “failing” into growth, opportunity, and success Resources from the Show: Visit Lin and Jirsa Photography and explore his phenomenal photo blog. It won't be the idea that causes you to quit... it's fear. It's the big idea that stops us-the idea of being a Google or a Facebook, a New York Times best-selling author, a guru, a YouTube sensation, a Mark Cuban or Kevin O'Leary. Sometimes, it seems easier to forget you even had the idea to begin with. The idea of success. But if you give in, you'll end up quitting before you start. It's a trap. Think about how many people are on Earth. There are millions of attractive people I have never met because I didn't give myself the chance. I always thought, "She'd never have sex with me."I didn't even look. So I quit before I could start. But staring at a girl is easy. And who knows what that leads to? If you want to achieve something, you need to make moves. In today's podcast, you'll learn the steps you need to take to achieve anything. My guest, Mary Karr, is an award-winning poet and best-selling memoirist with praise from Stephen King, among many other highly-esteemed writers. In the interview, Mary shares some easy techniques you can use to get started. Number one, start with things that are easy or convenient, and build from there. Identifying your interests is important, too. Mary started with reading. "Something about reading other people's life stories made me less lonely," she says. Mary explains that it's often "the thing that happened to you that was very dramatic that maybe nobody else would find dramatic," that make the best stories. These little moments give you insight. That's what makes you capable of doing whatever you put your mind to. No one has your experiences, the order of those experiences, your relationships, your perspective, your talents, and your drive. These pieces make you capable of doing something nobody else can. You have to work with what you have. "I start with very convenient ideas and convenient memories in which I always appear to be doing beautiful and nimble things," she says, "and then it turns out I was the one making a lot of the trouble." When it's your story, who knows what will turn out? Your experiences shape what you're capable of. And they shape what you're on your way to becoming. "No one can tell me what the shape of my mind is like better than me," Mary says. In addition to her literary success, Mary taught creative writing in jail. Why? "All of us who write are ultimately trying to make the world less lonely," she says. If there's an impact you'd like to make, make it. Even if you're scared. "I'm never not scared," Mary says. When I asked what she's scared of, I realized I've heard her list before. From myself. Scared of sounding like an idiot, being boring, "losing what little stature I've gained for myself." If what you have is so little, then what is there to lose? That's how I picked myself up. I improved 1% a day. You can too. Listen today for techniques to get overcome fear of failure. You'll learn to look around you and discover opportunities. You'll let yourself stare. Site: http://www.audiobooks.com/podcast | Email: podcast@audiobooks.com This week on the Audiobooks.com Podcast, Addy and the Real Brian sit down to chat with Pat Flynn, author of the book Let Go, which was released in April of 2013 and narrated by the author, that shares the journey he took from architect to entrepreneur extraordinaire. What we love about this interview with Pat is the inspiration he is to countless people who find themselves in the same situation he was as depicted in his book. Now we have the special opportunity to ask him about his process, about his craft, and about what he is currently working on so that we get to share with you why his book is worth your credit. THE WORK An author, a podcaster, a business owner, a father, a husband, a friend. Pat Flynn wears many hats, but he's making it work in a way he never could have imagined. Let Go is Pat's very vulnerable, very authentic account of how he took his future by the horns and decided to either succeed or fail by his own merit. Doing so brought him through many trials, but ones that were necessary in order to get him to where he is now. Where Let Go was a memoir, of sorts, Pat's new project is more intentional about providing actionable value to his readers. There are a lot of books on finding inspiration for ideas in all aspects of creative or entrepreneurial endeavors, and then there are a lot of books on how to build that idea. But Pat saw a gaping hole between those two popular points of assistance, and that is in how to determine whether the idea you've come up will work out for you. Pat says his superpower is being able to walk people through really complicated things in a simple way. By providing a series of thought experiments and metrics, he wants to enable his readers to analyze their current situation and walk away with a definitive plan of how to move forward. Whether that is giving yourself permission to pursue that idea, or to understand how the idea needs to evolve in order to move forward, he wants it to help people take action. We're huge fans of Pat's first book and cannot wait for the second! THE CRAFT In addition to talking about his next project, Pat also goes into his own process for writing and concept development. Whether you're an aspiring writer or just like to hear about writers behind the scenes, it's a treat to hear how Pat utilizes post-it notes in order to outline and develop his book. As we interview more authors and narraters it'll become more and more evident that everyone finds a process that works for them and it'll often be drastically different from anything we've heard previously. And yet there is always a process. Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft was hugely successful largely because of the popularity that King has seen with his fiction novels, but also because it is part memoir part exposé into his process of writing. Like Pat, King had to overcome obstacles in order to achieve his aspirations, and through it all he acquired knowledge, experience, and confidence which he chose to share in the form of this book. Passion drives us to act, and it is authors like Pat Flynn who want to help us act. We are very grateful to Pat for taking the time to discuss his process, share what he's working on, and talk a bit about his journey to where he is today. PAT'S RECOMMENDATIONS Because he spends so much time writing non-fiction, Pat uses audiobooks in order to escape reality. He's recently listened to The Martian by Andy Weir and Ready Player One, which we've talked about many times on this podcast and will be reviewing in the upcoming weeks. However, Pat's recommendation for spending a single credit actually lands on Dale Carnegie's How To Win Friends and Influence People. Go listen, and show Pat some love! Show us some love!
