Have you ever gotten to the end of, say, a jar of peanut butter and wondered if it should go in trash or recycling? If it's worth rinsing out? And where will it actually end up?Journalist Alexander Clapp had those same questions, and went to great lengths to answer them—visiting five continents to chronicle how our trash travels. Along the way, he discovered a multibillion-dollar trash trade run by shady waste brokers, and a global industry powered by slimy spoons, crinkled plastic bags, and all the other stuff we throw away. It's a putrid business that we're a part of, and many of us know little about. In a conversation from February, Host Flora Lichtman speaks with Clapp about the garbage business and his new book Waste Wars: The Wild Afterlife Of Your Trash.Guest: Alexander Clapp is a journalist and author of Waste Wars: The Wild Afterlife Of Your Trash. The Twa Teams trio are back as George Cran returns from his break and there is plenty to get through. Dundee United's victory over St Mirren was impressive in a new sort of way while Stephen Robinson was not happy with the referee at Tannadice. Dundee had victory in their hands but threw it away – what happened in that second half? What happened with Scott Bain? And why is Bear so angry?! Talking everything dark blue and tangerine are Courier Sport writers George Cran and Alan Temple alongside ex-Tele Sport editor Graeme Finnan. Big Ange's first game in charge of Nottingham Forest didn't go to plan as a brace from Martin Zubimendi helped Arsenal to an easy 3-0 win at the Emirates. Elsewhere in London, Chelsea threw away three points thanks to Alejandro Garnacho falling asleep at a long throw, allowing Fabio Carvalho to equalise at the death for Brentford. In recent years, volunteer-led groups like Urban Compassion Project have struggled to deal with illegal dumping in Oakland. Despite removing more than half a million pounds of trash this year, piles of garbage continue to plague our streets. How did this problem get so bad and why is it so hard to fix? As usual, I turned to history for answers. Before Waste Management took over in 1986, trash collection was handled by the worker-owned Oakland Scavenger Company, a business founded by Italian immigrants more than a century ago. For this episode, I spoke with several retired third-generation garbage men: Robert Biasotti and the Muzio brothers – Tony, Dino, and Mike. I also unearthed a 1981 interview with Ed Lavagetto, whose father was one of the original Oakland Scavenger partners. These conversations revealed not only a totally different system of trash collection, but a story that illuminates so many changes in American culture. It's a story of poor immigrants grinding their way into the middle class. It's the story of why Temescal, now one of Oakland's trendiest neighborhoods, used to be called Little Italy. It's a story of an old world mentality clashing with new values ushered in by the Civil Rights era… and it's also a story of what's been lost as mega-corporations have risen to dominance. Ah, bananas…They're delicious, nutritious, and potentially malicious! Wait, what was that last part? How could one little banana do any harm whatsoever?! Well, what if I told you that these days some of them can easily send you to the hospital? Yeah, you'll definitely wanna know about this, so please watch our new video! TIMESTAMPS: The first case of danger 0:58 The very recent case of danger 3:40 The case with grape 4:34 How to pick apples 6:42 How to pick pears 7:33 How to pick oranges 8:27 How to pick grapes 9:12 How to pick peaches 10:07 #spotbanana #fruitspider Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... SUMMARY: - The first huge eye-opening case of this potassium-packed fruit's potential danger happened back in 2013. A 29-year-old U.K. woman just bought a couple of bananas. She noticed white fuzzy spots on one of them but figured it was just mold on the peel. - In May 2017, a 30-year-old English woman also became victim of this horrendous experience when she was about to peel her banana and noticed a white egg sac on it. This sac suddenly broke open, releasing hundreds of spiders that started crawling on her hands and arms. - n July 2018, a Connecticut woman found the infamous and extremely deadly Black Widow in some pre-packaged grapes she'd bought at the store. - And if just one of your apples has mold, it won't be long till this mold spreads to other perfectly fine ones. So, it goes without saying, don't buy or eat moldy apples! - If the pears you're about to buy are soft anywhere else, that's a bad sign of overripe fruit that shouldn't be consumed. - Again, oranges are pretty safe from any unpleasant eight-legged surprises. But as far as consuming them goes, you wanna stay away from too soft and moldy oranges. - The sweetest green grapes are yellow-green, and the best red ones are predominantly red. As for black grapes, it's better to choose richly black ones. - Peaches are delicious and all, but it can be hard to pick the best ones. The first clue of a good peach is a vibrant color. The only red flag here is lighter parts with green tones, which mean that the peach was picked way too early and won't taste as good as a ripe one. Question: What would jazz music sound like if it had been born in a country without patriarchy; taught without bias and performed on a stage with radical inclusivity? That's what jazz titan Terri Lyne Carrington says is the foundation behind Berklee College of Music's Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. Terri Lyne is the founder and artistic director of the Institute and a professor at Berklee, her alma mater. In this episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds, I spend time with Terri Lyne Carrington, getting deep into this question along with how to lift women and nonbinary individuals in this historically male dominated industry, creating a new bandscape that reveals the multitude of different voices in jazz. Terri Lyne is a drum major for women and nonbinary individuals in the jazz ecosystem. She's also a highly successful drummer/percussionist, a bandleader, composer and producer, an artistic director of a couple of organizations, a writer with two books, and an educator. On Terri Lyne's website, she displays many photos of the extraordinary talent that she met through her musician father's friends. You see her standing between drummers Roy Haynes and Tony Williams; Art Blakey is sitting on the floor next to Terri Lyne while she plays the drums; another has Buddy Rich next to her while she's on the drums. Not your typical teenager's hangout of friends nor upbringing experiences. She readily acknowledges her home environment was one of privilege and enriching for a young prodigy. Terri Lyne dedicates her life to reaching back to today's young women and nonbinary individuals bent on changing the faces of jazz, on and behind the bandstand. We most certainly spend time on her 2023 Grammy winning album New Standards Vol. 1 on the CANDID label and the related book “New Standards Vol. 1: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers,” published by Berklee Press. Two tracks of music from the album are included in this episode. The personnel for the album: Terri Lyne Carrington-drums/percussion; Kris Davis-piano; Linda May Han Oh-bass; Nicholas Payton-trumpet; and Matthew Stevens, guitar. Uplifted Hearts by Shamie Royston; featuring Ravi Coltrane-tenor sax; Val Jeanty-electronics; Elena Pinderhuges-flute; Negah Santos-percussion; and Shadrack Oppong-spoken word. Throw It Away by Abbey Lincoln; featuring: Somi-vocal; Melanie Charles-vocal; and Negah Santos-percussion. Terri Lyne Carrington's portfolio is extensive, bold, and rich. If you are unfamiliar with it, I encourage you to check it out and listen to her music in her discography. The next episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds will be in early 2024. I'm taking some medical time off until then. This is the first year of this podcast. Thanks so much to all my guests and to you for making this a great year for me. If you have not subscribed, do so. You'll be one of the first to know when a new episode is released. Support live jazz wherever you are. Be safe. Steve Braunginn Thanks to CANDID Records for the music. “Everyone in the entertainment business works hard. Except agents, obviously.” So says Rob this week, as he describes the differences between writing and directing, with a few nods to actors (and their overacting): Being a writer teaches you how to be alone. But being a director teaches you how to be with people. So maybe, actually, being a director is the harder job? Also, what's the best way for an actor to play a drunk person? We won't spoil it here, but it hinges on on not being yourself.Follow us (and like us!) wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts, and on Twitter.
