ABOUT ALEX TREWHITT Alexandria Trewhitt is an American actress living in Los Angeles. A small-town native of Tennessee, she began her career at 16 years of age while juggling dance lessons and a full schedule of homeschooling. Her love of writing and storytelling stems from an intense interest in the exploration of people's motivations and emotions. Alex can often be found boxing, hiking with her dog, and backpacking through far-flung locales on the opposite side of the globe. Prior to Cherry, Alex had never roller-skated but jumped at the challenge and worked with a coach six weeks prior to filming. To hear more, visit yasha.substack.comWe recently went to the local theater to watch Ithaca, a new documentary about Julian Assange that focuses on his dad's efforts to get him out of London's Belmarsh Prison, where he's been held in solitary since 2019 while fighting extradition to United States on espionage charges — initially under Trump but now under Biden. Oh how things change!To add some context to the film, we watched and discuss two other Julian Assange docs: Laura Poitras' Risk and Alex Gibney's We Steal Secrets. They amount to a decade's worth of documentaries about Wikileaks — chronicling the increasing repression and marginalization and hopelessness of Julian and his project to change the world by freeing information.—Yasha and EvgeniaA couple of notes on our discussion.The three films are all very different. Of the three, Risk is probably the most interesting to watch but also the most deceptive and least informative. It gives viewers a false sense of intimacy and reality, while on the backend being very manipulative.As we discus in the ep, most viewers probably won't know that after Risk premiered at Cannes — and after Laura Poitras appeared and hugged on the red carpet with Wikileaks sidekick Jacob Appelbaum — Poitras re-edited the film, changing the narrative to show Julian Assange and Jacob Appelbaum not as heroes but as predators. Yasha first found out about this sneaky re-edit from Julian back in 2017 when Julian was still holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy. Julian felt betrayed and explained the re-editing of the film as Laura's attempt to protect her reputation from a couple of things that happened not long after the film had its premier in France. One was that Jacob Appelbaum — the Tor Project frontman with whom Laura was intimately involved with — was accused of being a sexual predator and was then cancelled by the privacy community. The second was that Julian became fully toxic in liberal circles during the 2016 presidential election: he was seen as a Russian asset who backed Trump over Hillary and released all those damaging emails.So as Julian explained: because of all of this Poitras had to betray her two friends — one of whom was in captivity, the other who used to be her lover — to make sure she came out of these scandals clean, even though she had no problem with any of this until it became public and a problem for her career. It was a tangled, gross situation.“I think it's mostly defensive. She's the daughter of a billionaire, and has an apartment in Tribecca, Manhattan,” Julian wrote to Yasha back then. “But she's pretty simple. She aspires to maximise her status among the Tribecca/Greenwich Village, etc. set.”

Kevin VanHentenryck was born May 28th 1953 in Ferndale Michigan. Throughout High School, VanHentenryck also raced motorcycles off the road in both Enduros, and Observed Field Trials.  While attending the Academy of Dramatic Arts at Oakland University in Michigan, he suffered a crash while practicing, breaking both ankles and his jaw, resulting in a thirteen-month recuperation.   When mostly recovered, he moved to NYC to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Art.  While there, he saw The Savage Messiah, a film by Ken Russell, at the Little Carnegie Cinema.  Of that life-changing experience, he says:“During the course of the film they showed a close-up of a real sculptors hands working a block of marble with a hammer and chisel.  I was so turned on to, and by the idea of a rock as a plastic medium. I started haunting The Sculpture House, a sculpture supply place literally around the corner from the Academy.   When I had worked up my nerve sufficiently and saved up what I hoped was enough money, I went in and pestered some poor sales girl with every question about stone carving I could think of and walked out with a small square hammer, and three basic chisels.  I went and found a rock on the street in the East Village, and I set up a work bench underneath what is now known as the Highline, an elevated railroad line at eleventh Ave. and thirtieth street.  In those days, it was an abandoned area on the weekends.  The first moment I touched steel-to- stone the most amazing thing happened.  You could call it an epiphany, or a revelation… an absolute understanding that THIS was what I was meant to do; that there were angles circling around my head guiding my hands.  That moment has powered my whole life to this day.”  Within a short time, VanHentenryck switched his primary focus from acting to sculpture in natural stone.  Even taking a job in the book dept. of the Met so he could spend every lunch break studying sculpture.  Also around this time (1978), he rented a loft in the then abandoned neighborhood of Tribecca, at 151 Hudson Street, across from the Holland tunnel exit, which became his studio.  Then in an interesting reversal, Ilze, whom he had met at the Academy, introduced him to Frank Henenlotter, an independent film maker, who offered VanHentenryck the starring role in his film, Basket Case.  Low budget and campy, Basket Case won the Best Picture Award at the International Drive-In Movie Awards, and has over the years become a cult classic, and in 2018 was restored by and included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in NYC.  VanHentenryck has appeared at horror movie conventions and film festivals world-wide for fans of the film.    After four years in Tribecca, the writing was on the wall. SoHo, the next neighborhood north of Tribecca had been discovered.  Loft-living was becoming trendy. Robert De Niro moved into a loft a few blocks south of VanHentenryck's studio.  The lawyers and yuppies were moving in, rents were going up, and in spite of winning a major lawsuit against his loft lord, he realized his days in Tribecca were drawing to a close. Lauren Hadaway is a director based in Los Angeles and Paris whose debut feature, The Novice, premiered this year at Tribecca to great reviews and several awards; it's since been released theatrically and has been nominated for 5 Independent Spirit Awards. However even before this phenomenal film, she was achieving remarkable success in post-production sound, having worked in ADR and sound editing for directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Zach Snyder and Damien Chazelle. In this interview we chatted about how she wrote this feature whilst recording ADR on Zach Snyder's Justice League, what she learned from other directors through working in sound, the challenges of indie filmmaking and the appeal in a niche story such as The Novice.
