I could hear those motorcycles coming my direction.  They had to be going fast!  Echoing down through the canyon on that steep dirt road.  There's no guard rails up there!  Slide off the road and you're a goner.  Coming my way.  Coming really fast!  Those engines screaming.  Two KTM's roared up and parked near my bike, right next to the outdoor table where I was having breakfast up there in that mountain village.  2 matching KTM 500 Enduros.  The riders, also in matching KTM off-road racing gear.  Klim adventure helmets as I recall, neck braces, KTM jerseys, enduro pants and boots.  Oh yes, these two were pros.  They knew how to ride. And the shock that ran threw me when they pulled their helmets off….?  Wow, you've got to be kidding me!!!    Ha ha, I'll tell ya about it.

Deluxe Edition: Yet Another Pop Culture Podcast

Kevin VanHentenryck was born May 28th 1953 in Ferndale Michigan. Throughout High School, VanHentenryck also raced motorcycles off the road in both Enduros, and Observed Field Trials.  While attending the Academy of Dramatic Arts at Oakland University in Michigan, he suffered a crash while practicing, breaking both ankles and his jaw, resulting in a thirteen-month recuperation.   When mostly recovered, he moved to NYC to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Art.  While there, he saw The Savage Messiah, a film by Ken Russell, at the Little Carnegie Cinema.  Of that life-changing experience, he says:“During the course of the film they showed a close-up of a real sculptors hands working a block of marble with a hammer and chisel.  I was so turned on to, and by the idea of a rock as a plastic medium. I started haunting The Sculpture House, a sculpture supply place literally around the corner from the Academy.   When I had worked up my nerve sufficiently and saved up what I hoped was enough money, I went in and pestered some poor sales girl with every question about stone carving I could think of and walked out with a small square hammer, and three basic chisels.  I went and found a rock on the street in the East Village, and I set up a work bench underneath what is now known as the Highline, an elevated railroad line at eleventh Ave. and thirtieth street.  In those days, it was an abandoned area on the weekends.  The first moment I touched steel-to- stone the most amazing thing happened.  You could call it an epiphany, or a revelation… an absolute understanding that THIS was what I was meant to do; that there were angles circling around my head guiding my hands.  That moment has powered my whole life to this day.”  Within a short time, VanHentenryck switched his primary focus from acting to sculpture in natural stone.  Even taking a job in the book dept. of the Met so he could spend every lunch break studying sculpture.  Also around this time (1978), he rented a loft in the then abandoned neighborhood of Tribecca, at 151 Hudson Street, across from the Holland tunnel exit, which became his studio.  Then in an interesting reversal, Ilze, whom he had met at the Academy, introduced him to Frank Henenlotter, an independent film maker, who offered VanHentenryck the starring role in his film, Basket Case.  Low budget and campy, Basket Case won the Best Picture Award at the International Drive-In Movie Awards, and has over the years become a cult classic, and in 2018 was restored by and included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in NYC.  VanHentenryck has appeared at horror movie conventions and film festivals world-wide for fans of the film.    After four years in Tribecca, the writing was on the wall. SoHo, the next neighborhood north of Tribecca had been discovered.  Loft-living was becoming trendy. Robert De Niro moved into a loft a few blocks south of VanHentenryck's studio.  The lawyers and yuppies were moving in, rents were going up, and in spite of winning a major lawsuit against his loft lord, he realized his days in Tribecca were drawing to a close. In 1984 he relocated his studio to the mountain top region of the Catskill mountains where he remains to this day producing the finest sculpture and hand-carved signs in the region.Todays Episode is brought to you by Get Slicks -head over to https://www.getslicks.com and check it out!https://www.freehscs.comhttps://www.kevinvanh.comhttps://www.deluxeedition.showhttps://www.twitter.com/deluxediSupport the showCheck out all of our previous shows at https://www.deluxeedition.show

We are continuing our chat with Mike Rapley on this episode. Mike has been a servant of our sport even before he was a rider; observing trials as a young lad before making the progression to his first trial in 1963. Since then, Mike has always been on either two or three wheels.   In Part 1 we discussed Mike's background where he's been a long time servant of his club helping run local & national events; He's spent years as a journalist, most notably working for Trials & Motocross News in the UK which afforded him the opportunity to be regularly working in the sport he was most passionate about. He spent some time riding Sidecars and Enduros but he has come back to the sport of trials and is still regularly competing to this day.   In part two we go on to discuss some of Mike's thoughts on the changes in our sport over the 58 years he's been involved. We discuss the current state of grass-roots trials vs the top flight of our sport at Trial GP. We also discuss the changes modern machines has delivered and although and if they are helping your everyday rider with the basics and throttle control?   This part of our catchup was much more of a conversation than an interview which was really refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Mike and I hope you do as well.   I give you Part 2 of my chat with Rapers!   Contact the Podcast: Email: podcast@trials.com.au Facebook Group: Trials Australia Podcast Community Instagram: _davidgrice TikTok: @trials_aus_podcast

Trek and Trail 5: Enduro Mountain Biking Get lost in the endurance sport of Enduro Mountain Biking by learning what gear you need, what skills you have to develop, and where to get your lobotomy. What the heck is Enduro Mountain Biking? The Enduro (short for Endurance) is a Gravity competition that combines all the best parts of Downhill racing into a multi-day event. An Enduro is by far the most exciting event in mountain biking right now considering how it does not require riders to exhaust themselves with climbing hills. Most Enduro events include 5 to 8 downhill races, where the uphill parts are used as a prelude. Racers can get a drink, take a nap, or even walk to the summit of their next downhill stage of the race. Because that made Enduro riders seem lazy, some race promoters decided to have an Enduro that made the Uphill (UH) parts a race right alongside the downhill parts. For every world championship format of Enduro is four other formats that mix it up to include just about anything. Since formats for Enduros vary, most national competitions replace the need to grind up hills in favor of a gentle ski lift ride to the top. However, not having to ride uphill does not make it any less daunting. What Enduro lacks in hill climbs it makes up for in multiple downhill rides, usually over a weekend where riders ride downhill trails over and over again. Some events even require riders to remove their chain in a “chainless” ride down the hill, with only pure gravity and skill to get them to the bottom. Most Enduros take all the rider’s best times over the multiple events, rank them, and add the time differences up. When the final numbers are tallied, they make the final race a pursuit-style cross country or Super-D race. This is where each rider gets a head-start based on their times in the previous stages and makes the competition a “winner take all” race to the final finish line. The end result of this format is an event that forces riders into a level the playing field. While Enduros try to combine all the skills of mountain biking into one event by requiring riders to be more well-rounded, the international competition is still centered mostly around downhill riding.
